Under great pressure, a diamond is being formed: The SBS over time

This article observes a paradox in the recent history of the Special Broadcasting Service. It is argued that, in contrast to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the role and general direction of SBS were not extensively debated as part of the ‘culture wars’ that occurred during the years of the Howard government. While that made SBS a less fraught space during that period, it may now be a factor in the comparative lack of support being given by the Rudd Labor government to SBS in comparison with the ABC, as some of the ‘special’ status of SBS has been blunted by its drift towards more mainstream programming and a mixed economy of commercial advertising, as well as government funding.

Rethinking public service media and citizenship : digital strategies for news and current affairs at Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service (SBS)

This article considers the concept of media citizenship in relation to the digital strategies of the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS). At SBS, Australia’s multicultural public broadcaster, there is a critical appraisal of its strategies to harness user-created content (UCC) and social media to promote greater audience participation through its news and current affairs Web sites. The article looks at the opportunities and challenges that user-related content presents for public service media organizations as they consolidate multiplatform service delivery. Also analyzed are the implications of radio and television broadcasters’ moves to develop online services. It is proposed that case study methodologies enable an understanding of media citizenship to be developed that maintains a focus on the interaction between delivery technologies, organizational structures and cultures, and program content that is essential for understanding the changing focus of 21st-century public service media.

Why merit may not be best for new ABC, SBS boards

In a bid to increase public confidence,the previous Labor government introduced a supposedly fairer merit-based process for ABC and SBS board appointments. Despite the present government criticising the wasteful spending involved, the upcoming appointments will follow the same process.

With budget cuts coming, ABC and SBS stand divided

Did SBS chief executive Michael Ebeid score a well-timed free kick or an own goal in his attack on the ABC this week? The ABC recently secured the free-to-air television rights for the Asian Cup football tournament to be held in Australia early next year, together with tonight’s match between the Socceroos and Japan. A lower bid by SBS – still in some circles fondly known as the “Soccer Broadcasting Service” – was rejected, dealing a significant blow to the smaller public broadcaster. The ABC was reportedly asked to make a bid by Football Federation Australia. The FFA presumably believes the ABC’s coverage will attract larger audiences to the game. This is despite SBS’s long-term success with the sport. It should not be forgotten, however, that while SBS has largely been defined by its long connection with the world game, ABC was the home of football from the late 1950s until the 1980s. But the stoush is only partly about football. It was surely no coincidence that it comes on the eve of the government’s formal announcement of the size of the cuts to public broadcasting...

Repetition rate stabilization of the SBS Q-switched fiber laser by external injection

Repetition rate fluctuation is one of the main drawbacks of the low-threshold stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) Q-switched fiber laser. A method to stabilize the repetition rate is proposed in this paper by injecting a square-wave modulated light. It is measured experimentally that variance of the repetition rate can be improved from similar to 20% to similar to 1% of the period. It is also found that effectiveness of the method depends on modulation frequency and duty cycle of the injection. Its working mechanism is analyzed qualitatively. Zero-broadening SBS slow light propagation in an optical fiber using two broadband pump beams

A new method of tailoring stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) gain spectrum for slow light propagation is proposed by use of two Gaussian-shaped broadband pump beams with different powers and spectral widths. The central frequency interval between the two pump beams are carefully set to be two inherent Brillouin frequency shift, ensuring that the gain spectrum of one pump has the same central frequency with the loss spectrum of the other one. Different gain profiles are obtained and analyzed. Among them a special gain profile is found that ensures a zero-broadening of the signal pulse independent of the Brillouin gain. This is owing to the compensation between the positive gain-dependent broadening and the negative GVD (group velocity dispersion) dependent broadening. The relationship of two pump beams is also found for constructing such a gain profile. It provides us a new idea of managing the broadening of SBS-based slow pulse by artificially constructing and optimizing the profile of gain spectrum. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

SBS as template to synthesize 3D siliceous mesostructured cellular foams

A mesostructured cellular foam (MCF) with three-dimensional (313) disordered strutlike structure is prepared by using triblock copolymer (poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene), SBS, M-W = 140K) as template under strong acid conditions. It is the first report to use triblock copolymer with both hydrophobic head and tail groups instead of hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail copolymers to synthesize siliceous mesostructured cellular foams. The resulted materials have high pore volume (0.92 cm(3)/g) and relatively narrow pore size distributions with a large pore size of 7.9 nm, which will allow for the fixation of large active complexes, reduce diffusional restriction of reactants and enable reactions involving bulky molecules to take place, especially.

Effects of SBS addition and temperature on 3D siliceous mesostructured cellular foam

Siliceous mesostructured cellular foam with three-dimensional (3D) wormhole structure (MSU-type) is prepared by using triblock copolymer (poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b- styrene), SBS) with both hydrophobic head and tail group as template in strong acid condition via microemulsion method. The effects of SBS addition and temperature on the morphology and physicochemical properties, such as pore diameters, surface areas and pore volumes of the materials have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. The results show that the pore volumes, pore sizes and specific surface areas depend strongly on the SBS amount and forming micelles temperature. Moreover, the materials obtained with high wall thickness exhibit a relatively good thermal stability.
