Methods of diagnosis in Biomedical applications can be broadly divided into contact and non-contact based methods. So far, ultrasound based methods have been found to be most favorable for non-contact, non-invasive diagnosis, especially in the case of tissue stiffness analysis. We report here, the fabrication and characterization details of a new contact based transducer system for qualitative determination of the stiffnesses of non-piezoelectric substrates using the phenomenon of Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW). Preliminary trials to study the functionality of this system were carried out on various metallic and non-metallic substrates, and the results were found to be satisfactory. To confirm the suitability of this system for biomedical applications, similar trials have been conducted on tissue mimicking phantoms with varying degrees of stiffness.

AlN/diamond heterostructures are very promising for high frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. In their design, the thickness of the piezoelectric film is one of the key parameters. On the other hand, the film material quality and, hence, the device performance, also depend on that thickness. In this work, polished microcrystalline diamond substrates have been used to deposit AlN films by reactive sputtering, from 150 nm up to 3 μm thick. A high degree of the c-axis orientation has been obtained in all cases. SAW one port resonators at high frequency have been fabricated on these films with a proper combination of the film thickness and transducer size.

A review of the literature that frames coaching practice and specifically the formation and determination of expert coaching practice reveals a body of research that lacks continuity. It has recently been argued that much of the instability surrounding our professional interpretation of coaching practice stems from a penchant for subjective investigation. This analysis draws on a review of over 100 peer reviewed articles, chapters and books – all published within the last 35 years, that address the notion of coaching practice. The findings of this analysis suggests that much of the research used to establish conceptual clarity fails to distinguish between highly organised or efficient coaching practice and expert coaching practice. This paper concludes with some recommendations from alternate paradigms which suggest that expertise in interceptive sports coaching may be better theorised and suitably identified through a lens of the growing ideas surrounding ‘emergence’.

A nine level modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) based on four full bridge cells is shown driving a piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer at 71 and 39 kHz, in simulation and experimentally. The modular cells are small stackable PCBs, each with two fully integrated surface mount 22 V, 40 A MOSFET half-bridge converters, and include all control signal and power isolation. In this work, the bridges operate at 12 V and 384 kHz, to deliver a 96 Vpp 9 level waveform with an effective switching frequency of 3 MHz. A 9 pH air cored inductor forms a low pass filter in conjunction with the 3000 pF capacitance of the transducer load. Eight equally phase-displaced naturally sampled pulse width modulation (PWM) drive signals, along with the modulating sinusoid, are generated using phase accumulation techniques in a dedicated FPGA. Experimental time domain and FFT plots of the multilevel and transducer output waveforms are presented and discussed.

Piezoelectric ultrasound transducers are commonly used to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vice versa. The transducer performance is highly affected by the frequency at which it is excited. If excitation frequency and main resonant frequency match, transducers can deliver maximum power. However, the problem is that main resonant frequency changes in real time operation resulting in low power conversion. To achieve the maximum possible power conversion, the transducer should be excited at its resonant frequency estimated in real time. This paper proposes a method to first estimate the resonant frequency of the transducer and then tunes the excitation frequency accordingly in real time. The measurement showed a significant difference between the offline and real time resonant frequencies. Also, it was shown that the maximum power was achieved at the resonant frequency estimated in real time compare to the one measured offline.

Analogue and digital techniques for linearization of non-linear input-output relationship of transducers are briefly reviewed. The condition required for linearizing a non-linear function y = f(x) using a non-linear analogue-to-digital converter, is explained. A simple technique to construct a non-linear digital-to-analogue converter, based on ' segments of equal digital interval ' is described. The technique was used to build an N-DAC which can be employed in a successive approximation or counter-ramp type ADC to linearize the non-linear transfer function of a thermistor-resistor combination. The possibility of achieving an order of magnitude higher accuracy in the measurement of temperature is shown.

The design and implementation of a complete gas sensor system for liquified petroleum gas (LPG) gas sensing are presented. The system consists of a SnO2 transducer, a lowcost heater, an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with front-end interface circuitry, and a microcontroller interface for data logging. The ASIC includes a relaxation-oscillator-based heater driver circuit that is capable of controlling the sensor operating temperature from 100degC to 425degC. The sensor readout circuit in the ASIC, which is based on the resistance to time conversion technique, has been designed to measure the gas sensor response over three orders of resistance change during its interaction with gases.

Noncontact method of sensing accurately the magnitude and direction of displacements is essential in systems such as the numerically controlled machines. A displacement transducer, using Moiré transmission gratings is described. The notable feature of this instrument is that it requires only gratings of small lengths, even for measurement of large displacements.

Biosensors have gained immense acceptance in the field of medical diagnostics, besides environmental, food safety and biodefence applications due to its attributes of real-time and rapid response. This synergistic combination of biotechnology and microelectronics comprises a biological recognition element coupled with a compatible transducer device. Diabetes is a disease of major concern since the ratio of world population suffering from it is increasing at an alarming rate and therefore the need for development of accurate and stable glucose biosensors is evident. There are many commercial glucose biosensors available yet some limitations need attention. This review presents a detailed account of the polypyrrole based amperometric glucose biosensors. The polymer polypyrrole is used extensively as a matrix for immobilization of glucose oxidase enzyme owing to its favourable features such as stability under ambient conditions, conductivity that allows it to be used as an electron relay, ability to be polymerized under neutral and aqueous mild conditions, and more. The simple one-step electrodeposition on the electrode surface allows easy entrapment of the enzyme. The review is structured into three categories (a) the first-stage biosensors: which report the studies from the inception of use of polypyrrole in glucose biosensors during which time the role of the polymer and the use of mediators was established. This period saw extensive work by two separate groups of Schuhmann and Koopal who contributed a great deal in understanding the electron transfer pathways in polypyrrole based glucose biosensors, (b) the second-stage biosensors: which highlight the shift of polypyrrole from a conventional matrix to composite matrices with extensive use of mediators focused at improving the selectivity of response, and (c) third-stage biosensors: the remarkable properties of nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes and their outstanding ability to mediate electrontransfers have seen their indispensable use in conjugation with polypyrrole for development of glucose biosensors with improved sensitivity and stability characteristics which is accounted in the review, which thus traces the evolution of polypyrrole from a conventional matrix, to composites and thence to the form of nanotube arrays, with the objective of addressing the vital issue of diabetes management through the development of stable and reliable glucose biosensors.

The performance of a pressure transducer with meandering-path thin film strain gauges has been studied. Details of the procedure followed to prepare the thin film strain gauge system on the pressure transducer diaphragm are given. The effect of post-deposition heat treatment on the resistance of the sensing films of the strain gauges and the insulating base layers are discussed. The output of the pressure transducer was studied with various input pressures and excitation voltages. It was found that up to a maximum of 10 V bridge excitation the output was stable and repetitive. The maximum non-linearity and hysteresis observed are ±0.15%, ±0.16% and ±0.14% FSO (full-scale output) for 5, 7.5 and 10 V excitation respectively. Information on the output behaviour of the pressure transducer with temperature is also included.

A diaphragm-type pressure transducer with a sputtered platinum film strain gauge (sensing film) has been designed and fabricated. The various steps followed to prepare thin film strain gauges on the diaphragm are described. M-bond 450 adhesive (Measurements Group, USA) has been employed as the insulating layer. A detailed procedure to cure this layer is given. A d.c. sputtering method is employed to prepare the platinum films. This paper also includes details of the strain gauge pattern and its location on the diaphragm. A description of the output characteristics and overall behaviour of the platinum thin film pressure transducer is reported.

This paper describes the work related to characterisation of an ultrasonic transducer fabricated in the laboratory. The response of the medium to the ultrasonic wave was obtained by converting the time domain signal to frequency domain, using the FFT algorithm. Cross-correlation technique was adopted to increase the S/N ratio in the raw time domain signal and subsequently, to determine the ultrasonic velocity in the medium.
