46,XX Male - Testicular Disorder of Sexual Differentiation (DSD): hormonal, molecular and cytogenetic studies

The XX male syndrome - Testicular Disorder of Sexual Differentiation (DSD) is a rare condition characterized by a spectrum of clinical presentations, ranging from ambiguous to normal male genitalia. We report hormonal, molecular and cytogenetic evaluations of a boy presenting with this syndrome. Examination of the genitalia at age of 16 months, showed: penis of 3.5 cm, proximal hypospadia and scrotal testes. Pelvic ultrasound did not demonstrate Mullerian duct structures. Karyotype was 46,XX. Gonadotrophin stimulation test yielded insufficient testosterone production. Gonadal biopsy showed seminiferous tubules without evidence of Leydig cells. Molecular studies revealed that SRY and TSPY genes and also DYZ3 sequences were absent. In addition, the lack of deletions or duplications of SOX9, NR5A1, WNT4 and NROB1 regions was verified. The infant was heterozygous for all microsatellites at the 9p region, including DMRT1 gene, investigated. Only 10% of the patients are SRY-negative and usually they have ambiguous genitalia, as the aforementioned patient. The incomplete masculinization suggests gain of function mutation in one or more genes downstream to SRY gene.

46,XX DSD and Antley-Bixler syndrome due to novel mutations in the cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase gene

Deficiency of the enzyme P450 oxidoreductase is a rare form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia with characteristics of combined and partial impairments in steroidogenic enzyme activities, as P450 oxidoreductase transfers electrons to CYP21A2, CYP17A1, and CYP19A1. It results in disorders of sex development and skeletal malformations similar to Antley-Bixley syndrome. We report the case of a 9-year-old girl who was born with virilized genitalia (Prader stage V), absence of palpable gonads, 46,XX karyotype, and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. During the first year of life, ovarian cyst, partial adrenal insufficiency, and osteoarticular changes, such as mild craniosynostosis, carpal and tarsal synostosis, and limited forearm pronosupination were observed. Her mother presented severe virilization during pregnancy. The molecular analysis of P450 oxidoreductase gene revealed compound heterozygosis for the nonsense p.Arg223*, and the novel missense p.Met408Lys, inherited from the father and the mother, respectively. Altazor, de Vicente Huidobro: o gesto político numa das epopeias de XX

This article aims at presenting a reading of Vicente Huidobro's poem Altazor (1931,) assuming the epic genre postulations and the conditions of its development in the first half of the twentieth century. Important works were produced in that period, setting in motion a deployment of the epic genre as refashioned by the avant-garde movements and contesting the metaphysical formulations that had considered it impossible as a discursive space in modern times. Altazor is situated in this movement as a self-conscience of issues of language and its objective capacities. The work deals with the possible modes of enunciation of a great poet, Altazor, who lacks his former serenity of old and looks for a language able to transcend his mother tongue, because he does not accept its origin. His political revolution is performed on language, the artifice through which history is told.

Many-Body Effects on the rho(xx) Ringlike Structures in Two-Subband Wells

The longitudinal resistivity rho(xx) of two-dimensional electron gases formed in wells with two subbands displays ringlike structures when plotted in a density-magnetic-field diagram, due to the crossings of spin-split Landau levels (LLs) from distinct subbands. Using spin density functional theory and linear response, we investigate the shape and spin polarization of these structures as a function of temperature and magnetic-field tilt angle. We find that (i) some of the rings ""break'' at sufficiently low temperatures due to a quantum Hall ferromagnetic phase transition, thus exhibiting a high degree of spin polarization (similar to 50%) within, consistent with the NMR data of Zhang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 246802 (2007)], and (ii) for increasing tilting angles the interplay between the anticrossings due to inter-LL couplings and the exchange-correlation effects leads to a collapse of the rings at some critical angle theta(c), in agreement with the data of Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. B 78, 233305 (2008)].

O recurso da propaganda na valorização do produto imobiliário nos municípios de Vitória e Serra a partir da segunda metade do século XX

Este trabalho analisa a importância da propaganda no setor da construção imobiliária nos municípios de Vitória e Serra no Espírito Santo, localizados na Região Metropolitana da Grande Vitória (RMGV). Esse setor tem produzido uma série de transformações no espaço urbano da RMGV, onde a propaganda situa-se como parte destas estratégias, constituindo-se numa importante ferramenta. A partir de informações oriundas de entrevistas e de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, investigamos por que a propaganda vai modificando-se com as formas diferenciadas de produção imobiliária e ganhando importância nos lançamentos de empreendimentos entre as décadas de 1950 a 2010, nos municípios de Vitória e Serra. Ao longo da pesquisa foi possível constatar que os mecanismos institucionais criados pelo Estado trouxeram modificações ao referido setor, o que acarretou na elaboração de estratégias de produção e criação de novos produtos. Tais modificações manifestaram-se na propaganda imobiliária, que atualmente ocupa um lugar de destaque na gestão de marketing implantada nas construtoras e incorporadoras capixabas. Os resultados mostram que ao longo das décadas o setor da construção imobiliária vem elaborando estratégias para criação de novas formas de distinção de seus produtos com intuito de apropriação do espaço urbano nos municípios estudados.

A economia internacional no século XX: um ensaio de síntese

Ensaio sobre as grandes tendências da economia mundial no século XX, com ênfase nas transformações estruturais e institucionais de sua primeira metade, na expansão e crise da economia internacional no pós-Segunda Guerra e nas características do processo de globalização capitalista do final do século XX e princípios do XXI (discussão sobre as desigualdades estruturais entre países e sociedades). Seções específicas do trabalho são dedicadas ao comércio (do liberalismo ao protecionismo e do multilateralismo ao neoprotecionismo), às finanças internacionais e ao câmbio (do padrão ouro ao padrão ouro-dólar e à flutuação generalizada de moedas) e à estrutura institucional da economia internacional no século XX.
