Gemcitabine and paclitaxel associated pneumonitis in non-small cell lung cancer : report of a phase I/II dose-escalating study

The aim of this phase I/II dose escalating study was to establish the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of gemcitabine and paclitaxel given in combination in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). 12 patients with stage IIIB and IV NSCLC received paclitaxel administered intravenously over 1 h followed by gemcitabine given over 30 min on days 1, 8 and 15 every 28 days. Pneumonitis was the principal side-effect observed with 4 patients affected. Of these, 1 experienced grade 3 toxicity after one cycle of treatment and the others had grade 2 toxicity. All 4 cases responded to prednisolone. No other significant toxicities were observed. Of the 8 evaluable patients, 3 had a partial response and 2 had minor responses. The study was discontinued due to this dose-limiting toxicity. The combination of paclitaxel and gemcitabine shows promising antitumour activity in NSCLC, however, this treatment schedule may predispose to pneumonitis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

New Dawn (Parts I & II)

New Dawn is a cross-media visual art project that comprises a multi–channel video work (Boxcopy ARI, Brisbane) and a series of sculptural works (MetroArts, Brisbane) both of which conflate the online spectacle of real events with virtual gaming. The purpose of this project is to question this new phenomenon and what are the political, social and economic repercussions for these new technological developments on our bodies and subjectivities. By doing this my work asks us to reflect on how we function as a society in response to these new spaces of interaction, how we might respond to the political dimensions of these expanded sites of inhabitation, and how they might also represent a more troubling scenario for the possibility of dissent or opposition in our media saturated culture. The work was shown at multiple venues simultaneously. One of the components of the work won the 2013 Sunshine Coast Art Prize for sculpture.

Beta-Ketoacyl-ACP Synthase I/II from Plasmodium falciparum (PfFabB/F)-Is it B or F?

Condensing enzymes play an important and decisive role in terms of fatty acid composition of any organism. They can be classified as condensing enzymes involved in initiating the cycle and enzymes involved in elongating the initiated fatty acyl chain. In E. coli, two isoforms for the elongation condensing enzymes (FabB and FabF) exists whereas Plasmodium genome contains only one isoform. By in vitro complementation studies in E. coli CY244 cells, we show that PfFabB/ functions like E. coli FabF as the growth of the mutant cells could rescued only in the presence of oleic acid. But unlike bacterial enzyme, PfFabB/F does not increase the cis-vaccenic acid content in the mutant cells upon lowering the growth temperature. This study thus highlights the distinct properties of P. falciparum FabF which sets it apart from E. coli and most other enzymes of this family, described so far.

Synthesis, X-ray structure and in vitro cytotoxicity studies of Cu(I/II) complexes of thiosemicarbazone: special emphasis on their interactions with DNA

4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazone of napthaldehyde {where X = Cl (HL1) and X = Br (HL2)}, thiosemicarbazone of quinoline-2-carbaldehyde (HL3) and 4-(p-fluorophenyl) thiosemicarbazone of salicylaldehyde (H2L4) and their copper(I) {Cu(HL1)(PPh3)(2)Br]center dot CH3CN (1) and Cu(HL2)(PPh3)(2)Cl]center dot DMSO (2)} and copper(II) {((Cu2L2Cl)-Cl-3)(2)(mu-Cl)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (3) and Cu(L-4)(Py)] (4)} complexes are reported herein. The synthesized ligands and their copper complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry, NMR, ESI-MS, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Molecular structures of all the Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the complexes (1-4) were tested for their ability to exhibit DNA-binding and - cleavage activity. The complexes effectively interact with CT-DNA possibly by groove binding mode, with binding constants ranging from 10(4) to 10(5) M-1. Among the complexes, 3 shows the highest chemical (60%) as well as photo-induced (80%) DNA cleavage activity against pUC19 DNA. Finally, the in vitro antiproliferative activity of all the complexes was assayed against the HeLa cell line. Some of the complexes have proved to be as active as the clinical referred drugs, and the greater potency of 3 may be correlated with its aqueous solubility and the presence of the quinonoidal group in the thiosemicarbazone ligand coordinated to the metal.

Evaluacion de regencia en farmacias veterinarias de distritos I, II y III de Managua

En vista que en Nicaragua y principalmente en la capital Managua, existe una problemática en los establecimientos que se dedican a la venta de productos veterinarios y que brindan servicios directos a la ciudadanía para sus animales se propuso este estudio de tesis; que lleva por título: Evaluación de regencia en farmacias veterinarias de distritos I, II y III de Managua. Para lo cual se procedió a establecer objetivos tales como: Evaluar los tipos de farmacias veterinarias (Agroveterinarias, Farmacias Veterinarias, Farmacias Veterinarias con clínica Integrada y Farmacias Veterinarias Puras) de los distritos I, II, y III de Managua, para esto se efectuó dicho estudio en un periodo de 3 meses mediante visitas y recopilación de la información del 100% de los establecimientos encontrados en la guía telefónica del año 2007, por medio de información obtenida del Ministerio Agropecuario y Forestal (MAGFOR) y finalmente se tomaron en cuenta los establecimientos populares comprobados in situ, en total se evaluaron 20 establecimientos, en los cuales se aplicó una misma encuesta para la recolección de datos.. Los resultados obtenidos, demuestran que el alto porcentaje de las empresas que brindan servicio relacionado con la salud animal no esta siendo atendida por personal especializado, así el 80% de las Agroveterinarias equivalente a 4 establecimientos, actualmente son administradas 3 por comerciantes y una está a cargo de un Zootecnista. El 50% de las farmacias veterinarias son atendidas por Médicos Veterinarios y otro 50% por Comerciantes y Zootecnistas, no obstante aun en las farmacias veterinarias con clínica se encuentran regenciadas por Zootecnistas (9%) y el 91%(9), por Médicos Veterinarios. Se encontró que los 5 establecimientos agroveterinarios no están legalizados por las autoridades competentes del Ministerio Agropecuario y Forestal, 3 de las farmacias veterinarias (75%), laboran ilegalmente y 4 farmacias veterinarias con clínica (36%), brindan servicios a la población ilícitamente. Única y exclusivamente presentan permiso de la alcaldía de Managua. Concluyendo que la mayoría de los establecimientos son atendidos por no profesionales y /o profesionales que no son Médicos Veterinarios, no obstante se encontraron establecimientos atendidos por Médicos Veterinarios, por lo cual se recomienda que todo establecimiento de servicio Veterinario deben ser regenciados por un Médico Veterinario titulado, según citan los incisos 6.1.1 y 6.5.1 de la Norma Técnica Obligatoria Nicaragüense (NTON-20001-03.MAGFOR,2003).

Después de un siglo en el que los estudios petrarquescos han experimentado un florecimiento espectacular, con varias revistas y colecciones dedicadas exclusivamente a Petrarca y con una deslumbrante nómina de especialistas, han visto la luz siete de los veinte volúmenes previstos inicialmente.

Variation saisonniere des structures hydrologique et dynamique du plateau continental ivoirien (VASPI I, II, III)

This data report contains all the meteorological, hydrological and dynamic data gathered during the VASPI cruises (I : from December 8th to December 13th 1982, II : from March 5th to March 9th 1983, and III : from October 6th to October 10th 1983) carried out along the continental shelf of Ivory Coast by the oceanographic ship "Andre NIZERY". These cruises, which represent a part of a coastal programme, are included in the more general scientific program FOCAL, whose main scientific objective is the study of the thermal context of the intertropical atlantic area.

第一部分： 通过生理测定和化学染色分析了冬小麦品种小堰54和京411的叶片和非叶片组织的碳酸酐 酶活性。叶片碳酸酐酶活性(CA)在挑旗时期达到最大值，之后减少到最小，而在饱粒期又呈 增加趋势。从灌浆期到饱粒期，颖片和内稃的CA活性均减少，而外稃和种皮的CA活性均增加。在饱粒期，小堰54的叶片、颖片、外稃和种皮CA活性均高于京411。组织化学染色表明，CA主要分布在旗叶的叶肉细胞叶绿体中，也分布在非叶片组织颖片、外稃和内稃的叶肉和维管束鞘细胞的胞质中。这些结果表明，小麦非叶组织叶肉和维管束鞘细胞的胞质中的CA可能对饱粒期冬小麦的C4光合途径起作用。饱粒期小堰54的C02传递到Rubisco酶速率和抗旱性较京411高。 第二部分： 以继代培养的芦苇胚性细胞为材料，利用台盼兰拒染法检测了悬浮细胞死亡过程，并利用石蜡切片法及苏木精染色法观察了不同浓度镉对芦苇细胞的毒害作用。1000μM的CdCl2迅速导致芦苇悬浮细胞死亡，200μM的CdClz在接种后第5天引起悬浮细胞死亡，100μM的CdCl2在接种后第7天引起悬浮细胞死亡，≤50μM的CdClz在接种后7天不引起悬浮细胞死亡。同时对不同浓度镉处理的芦苇胚性细胞的内源植物激素和可溶性蛋白质进行分析，≤50μM的镉浓度显著地降低胚性细胞内IAA、ZR、GA3和GA4的含量，却提高ABA的含量，抑制可溶性蛋白质的合成：≥100μM的镉浓度显著地提高IAA、ZR、GA3和GA4的含量，却降低ABA的含量，促进可溶性蛋白质的合成。这些结果表明，镉的毒害至少包括镉浓度决定的两种细胞死亡机制，高浓度的镉(1000μM)引起的细胞死亡应当为坏死，而100μM的镉引起植物悬浮细胞发生程序性死亡。在较高浓度(≥100μM)的镉处理下，芦苇细胞内内源IAA、ZR、GA3和GA4的浓度较高，可能调控可溶性蛋白质的合成而促进细胞发生程序化死亡。

I：端羟基液体聚丁二烯的氯化 II：氯化端羟基液体聚丁二烯的固化

合成了一系列氯含量不同的氯化丁羟（氯含量为5％～68％）。利用红外光谱、核磁共振观察了氯含量不同的氯化丁羟的双键变化。通过氯含量－5反应时间的关系及上述观察结果表明；丁羟在四氯化碳中进行氯化，首先进行加成反应，待双键饱和后，进行取代反应。用红外光谱观察了丁羟在氯化反应中三种微观结构的变化，观察了氯化高顺式聚丁二烯的双键变化，对氯化丁羟的赤苏异构体的碳－氯键红外光密度比值，进行了分析。这些观察和分析说明；丁羟在四氯化碳中氯化，存在着顺－反异构化反应。较详细地研究了影响交联反应的主要因素，利用低聚物的特点，通过数均分子量和粘度表征了交联反应程度。从而观察到，交联反应伴随着氯化反应之中，交联程度随着反应液中羟浓度的提高，随着反应时间的延长而增大。在一定反应液浓度下交联程度可以减小到很低程度，得到完全可溶的氯化丁羟。反应温度对交联反应在20～76℃范围无显著影响。提出了以氯乙醇为调节剂合成液体氯化丁羟的方法。实验结果说明，氯乙醇比文献中得到的乙醇在抑制交联反应，提高氯含量方面效果更好。氯化丁羟的羟值分析结果表明，丁羟的羟值在氯化反应中没有损失。这对氯化丁羟作为遥瓜型低聚物应用，在进行固化反应时，是非常重要的。随着溶剂介电常数的提高，出现凝胶的极限浓度也提高。根据这一实验和上述各项实验结果，基于烯类化合物氯化反应的一些基础研究工作。我们认为，在丁羟的氯化反应中，存在着两种反应机理；离子机理的加成，导致可溶氯化产物，自由基机理除加成外，导致交联，顺－反异构化反应。II 氯化丁羟与TDI的反应为二级反应。DBTDL（二月桂酸二丁基锡）对本固化反应有明显的催化效果。在100 ℃，以DBTDL为催化剂的固化反应中，氯化丁羟与TDI的反应速度常数为11.9 * 10~(-3)（升／克分子·秒），这个反应活化能为5.5千卡／克分子。合成了一系列的氯化丁羟聚氨酯。红外光谱测试结果表明，NH基分为两个红外吸收峰；3440 cm~(-1), 3310 cm~(-1)。高波频峰的为游离的NH基，低波频峰为缔合的NH基，其缔合度为88％。同时，表征了氯化丁羟聚氨酯的主要红外光谱吸收峰。研究了氯化丁羟聚氨酯的形态结构。透射电子微显镜示出氯化丁羟聚氨酯的微相分离区域结构，其硬段区域结构的尺寸大约趋于在0.7～1.6μ范围内（硬段含量30％）。差热分析和示差扫描量热分析结果一致表明，氯化丁羟聚氨酯在60 ℃-90 ℃范围内有一宽而弱的吸热转变区，在115 ℃左右有一吸热峰，它们归因于硬段区域结构的热转变。宽角X光衍射实验没有观察到明显的结晶吸收峰的存在。这个实验结果主要与氯化丁羟聚氨酯的无规、侧基及不对称的结构特点有关。初步实验结果显示出，氯化丁羟聚氨酯具有优异的粘结性能，其抗剪强度约是丁羟聚氨酯的六倍。通过氧化锌的作用，可以提高氯化丁羟聚氨酯的抗张强度。因为粘结强度是水轮机耐磨耐汽蚀涂层研制中比较关键的因素，所以，这个实验结果是很有意义的。
