Isokinetic dynamometry of knee flexors and extensors: comparative study among non-athletes, jumper athletes and runner athletes

Participation in intensive sports activities leads to muscular specializations that may generate alterations in involved articular forces and cause static (posture) and dynamic changes (alterations of articular stability, coordination, etc.). Prevention of injury requires specific functional muscular evaluation in all athletes and for any kind of sport. OBJECTIVE: To dynamically evaluate, through isokinetic tests, the peak torque, total work, and average power of the knee flexor and extensor muscles of jumper and runner athletes and compare them to those of a non-athletic population, evaluating dominance and balance between agonistic and antagonistic muscle groups. RESULTS: In the non-athlete group, we noted a higher asymmetry between the dominant and nondominant members. The jumpers had the highest values of the evaluated parameters of all groups, whereas parameters for the runners were intermediate between non-athletes and jumpers.

Couch Potato to Runner Bean

To coincide with the start of National Obesity Awareness Week, the Public Health Agency is today urging people to take up the challenge 'From Couch Potato to Runner Bean in 10 weeks'.The PHA, in partnership with five local councils in the western area, will roll out a number of community obesity challenges and programmes between now and March.The challenges and programmes focus on building up physical activity in a gradual and healthy way. At the end of the ten week programme, participants will be encouraged to take part in a five kilometre or 10 kilometre walk, jog or run.Colette Brolly, the PHA Lead on Physical Activity, said: "It is hoped the programmes will influence behaviour changes in those who don't currently take part in physical activity. The beginning of a new year is a great time for a new start and a new challenge, and the resolution to get fit and healthy is a fantastic way to start 2014."She added: "Being physically active helps maintain a healthy weight and can reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and colon cancer. Being active is also good for your mental health and can lift mood, reduce anxiety and help to protect against depression. If you introduce changes in your life to increase physical activity, you will see big differences to your health and wellbeing."'Couch Potato to Runner Bean in Ten Weeks' supports the work of the PHA's Choose to Live Better campaign which aims to tackle obesity. Closed soilless growing system for producing strawberry bare root transplants and runner tips

The objective of this work was to test a closed soilless growing system for producing bare root transplants and runner tips of two strawberry clones, using two categories of substrates. The system used corrugated roofing panels of fiber-cement, over which a substrate layer was used as a growing bed. The nutrient solution was pumped from a reservoir toward the upper end of the roofing panels and drained back to a reservoir. Plant growth and development were determined for two advanced strawberry clones, grown in sand or in Plantmax organic substrate. Growth of the stock plants and the number and dry mass of bare root transplants were similar in the substrates, but bare roots differed in their crown diameters by substrate. For number of runner tips, no significant differences were found in total, small, and medium categories in the substrates. A mean production of about 590 runner tips per square meter and 145 bare root transplants per square meter was obtained. For both clones, a large number of bare root transplants and runner tips of adequate size were produced in the closed soilless growing system using sand or organic substrate.

Stability and adaptability of runner peanut genotypes based on nonlinear regression and AMMI analysis

The objective of this work was to estimate the stability and adaptability of pod and seed yield in runner peanut genotypes based on the nonlinear regression and AMMI analysis. Yield data from 11 trials, distributed in six environments and three harvests, carried out in the Northeast region of Brazil during the rainy season were used. Significant effects of genotypes (G), environments (E), and GE interactions were detected in the analysis, indicating different behaviors among genotypes in favorable and unfavorable environmental conditions. The genotypes BRS Pérola Branca and LViPE‑06 are more stable and adapted to the semiarid environment, whereas LGoPE‑06 is a promising material for pod production, despite being highly dependent on favorable environments.

Defoliation of strawberry mother plants for the production of runner tips

The objective of this work was to determine the sink-source relationships and their effects on the number and growth of runner tips of 'Camino Real' strawberry stock plants. Three types of sources were evaluated: one defoliation at 96 days after planting (DAP), two defoliations at 50 and 96 DAP, and mother plants without defoliation. Four types of sink were accessed: runner tips collected weekly and monthly, four stolons with rooted runner tips in pots, and four freely-grown stolons. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. The source types were placed in the plots, and sink types in the subplots. The number of runner tips, the crown diameter, and the dry matter mass were determined. Number and growth of tips were higher on plants without defoliation, and decreased 44.7% on twice-defoliated mother plants. The two-defoliation management did not reduce runner tip dry matter mass only on plants with rooted stolons, which produced runner tips 50% heavier. Defoliation of mother plants bearing rooting stolons can be used to reduce their growth, without reducing the emission and growth of runner tips.

A narrativa mitológica de Joseph Campbell no filme Blade Runner

Esta pesquisa busca determinar se a película cinematográfica Blade Runner pode ser entendida como mito segundo a concepção de Joseph Campbell, bem como procura desvendar qual o significado do filme enquanto mito. Para o primeiro tópico, foi usado o método de análise textual, amparado no paradigma indiciário. Para o segundo tópico, foi feita uma comparação do Teste de Turing e do programa de conversação ELIZA, de Joseph Weizenbaum com Blade Runner. Nossa conclusão final remete à idéia da máquina como espelho simbólico do ser humano.

SweetRunner : juego de plataforma estilo runner para Android

[ES] El primordial objetivo del presente Trabajo de Final de Título (TFT) es realizar un juego de plataforma estilo runner para dispositivos móviles con sistema Android, y por medio de este, realizar un análisis de las diferentes herramientas que se pueden emplear para el desarrollo juegos para móvil estilo runner.  El resultado que se obtuvo fue SweetRuner, una aplicación móvil que permite jugar en dispositivos móviles que posean sistema Android en una versión igual o superior a Honeycomb. Las características que posee SweetRunner son: creación aleatoria de los elementos del juego; obstáculos y bonificaciones; aumento de dificultad conforme aumenta la puntuación; cálculo de puntuación y puntuación máxima; finalmente, comunicación con la red social Facebook. El desarrollo de SweetRunner se realizó en el motor de videojuegos Unity3D, ya que es considerado la mejor opción para este tipo de juegos, por las facilidades que brinda y por su sencillez y amigabilidad. La mayoría de las herramientas empleadas en el desarrollo de la app son de software libre, pero también se ha trabajado con software privativo. Es por esta razón que el presente trabajo se distribuye bajo la licencia GNU LGPL versión3, ya que con esta licencia se pueden enlazar a un programa no GPL, que puede ser software libre o no. El presente trabajo tiene el potencial necesario para convertirse en una guía para desarrollar juegos para móviles estilo runner. Esta guía facilitará el proceso de desarrollo y optimización, además de ayudar a entender el funcionamiento y la potencialidad de las diferentes herramientas y componentes que se usaron.

La elaboración de un Plan de Marketing es fundamental para cualquier empresa del mercado. El presente trabajo analiza la situación de una empresa especializada en running, la cual comenzó su actividad hace un año. El motivo principal del trabajo es la incertidumbre de los propietarios, ya que éstos no realizaron ningún tipo de estudio antes de comenzar la actividad. El análisis es realizado a través de un plan de marketing estructurado en varias partes. Primero se presenta la empresa y se establece la misión y visión. Luego, se analiza la empresa externa e internamente, obteniendo la matriz DAFO1. A continuación, se establecen los objetivos a alcanzar por la empresa, así como las estrategias para alcanzarlos. Finalmente, se determinan las acciones a seguir para las cuatro variables del marketing mix y se realiza un análisis del presupuesto de la empresa, así como la previsión de beneficios mediante tres escenarios distintos, con el fin de obtener las conclusiones oportunas acerca del futuro de la empresa.
