Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) thin films and powders with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor solution. The effect of lanthanum on the structure of BIT powders was investigated by Rietveld Method. The increase of lanthanum content does not lead to any secondary phases. Orthorhombicity of the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice decreased with the increase of lanthanum content due the reduction of a/b ratio. The BLT films show piezoelectric coefficients of 45, 19, 16 and 10 pm/V for x = 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75, respectively. The piezoelectric response is strongly reduced by the amount of lanthanum added to the system. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

BaTiO(3) powders were prepared through mechanical activation chemistry and analyzed by Rietveld refinement with X-ray diffraction data. Raw BaCO(3) and TiO(2) powders were dry milled for 5 and 20 h and then calcinated for 2 and 4 h at 800 degrees C. The milling process was found to have broken up the BaCO(3) and TiO(2) crystals into smaller crystals and formed only small amounts ( 1.5 wt%) of BaTiO(3). Subsequence calcinations for 2 and 4 h at 800 degrees C successfully produced large amounts (>97.7 wt%) of BaTiO(3) crystals. The calcination process also generated microstrains and crystallite-size anisotropy in BaTiO(3). An increase in the calcination time from 2 to 4 h increased the BaTiO(3) weight percentage and the crystal lite-shape anisotropy, but decreased the tetragonal distortion anisotropic microstrains in BaTiO(3) crystals. The structural and vibrational properties of nanocrystalline Ga1-xMnxN films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering were analyzed in a wide composition range (0 < x < 0.18). The films were structurally characterized using x-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement. The corresponding vibrational properties were investigated using micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The films present a high crystallized fraction, crystallites having wurtzite structure, and high orientation texture with the c axis oriented perpendicular to the substrate surface. Rietveld analysis indicates that Mn atoms are incorporated substitutionally into Ga positions and show that the ionic character of cation-N bonds along the c axis is favored by the Mn incorporation. No evidence for Mn segregation or Mn rich phases was found in the composition range analyzed. Micro-Raman scattering spectra and infrared absorption experiments showed progressive changes with the increase of x and monotonic shifts of the GaN TO and LO peaks to lower frequencies. The structural and vibrational analyses are compared and the influence of Mn on the static and dynamic properties of the lattice is analyzed. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Bi 4Ti 3- xNbxO 12 (BITNb) samples, with × ranging from 0 to 0.40 were obtained using a polymeric precursor solution. Rietveld analyses confirmed that the powders crystallize in an orthorhombic structure free of secondary phases with space group Fmmm. Raman analysis evidenced a sharp increase in the bands intensity located at 129 cm -1 and 190 cm -1 due the lattice distortion in BIT02Nb and BIT04Nb compositions. UV-vis spectra indicated that addition of niobium causes a reduction of defects in the BIT lattice due the suppression of oxygen vacancies located at BO-6 octahedral. Size and morphology of particles as well as electrical behavior of BIT ceramics were affected by addition of donor dopant. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning and was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). PFM measurements revealed a decrease in piezoelectric response with increasing Nb concentration originating from a reduced polarizability along the a-axis. High spontaneous polarization is noted for the less doped sample due the reduction of strain energy and pin charged defects after niobium addition. Copyright © 2010 American Scientific Publishers.

Effects of titanium carbide (TiC) addition on structural and magnetic properties of isotropic (Pr,Nd)-Fe-B nanocrystalline magnetic materials have been investigated. In this work, we investigate the effect of TiC addition on a (Pr,Nd)-poor and B-rich composition, as well as on a B-poor and (Nd, Pr)-rich composition. Rapidly solidified (Pr, Nd)-Fe-B alloys were prepared by melt-spinning. The compositions studied were (Pr(1-x)Nd(x))(4)Fe(78)B(18) (x = 0, 0.5, and 1) with addition of 3 at% TiC. Unlike the (Pr(x)Nd(1-x))(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6) materials that present excellent values for coercive. field and energy product, the (Pr,Nd)-poor and B-rich composition alloys with TiC addition present lower values. Rietveld analysis of X-ray data and Mossbauer spectroscopy revealed that samples are predominantly composed of Fe(3)B and alpha-Fe. For the RE-rich compositions (Pr(x)Nd(1-x))(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6) (x = 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) with the addition of 3 at% TiC, the highest coercive field and energy product (8.4 kOe and 14.4 MGOe, respectively) were obtained for the composition Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6). The impact of fluorine in copper flotation was relatively unknown until the introduction of skarn ores in the Ok Tedi concentrator. Fluorine in the copper concentrates reports to the gas phase during the smelting stage and forms a corrosive H2SO4-HCl-HF acid brine mixture which must be neutralised. This work was aimed at studying the mineralogy of the fluorosilicate minerals contained in the various oretypes present in the Ok Tedi porphyry copper deposit. The electron microprobe was used to analyse for fluorine and hence identify the fluorosilicate minerals in each oretype. This study revealed talc, phlogopite, biotite, clays, amphiboles, fluoroapatite and titanite to be the sources of fluorine in the orebody. Laboratory and plant investigations were conducted to study the flotation response of these minerals. Chemical assaying of the products of these tests was done to determine the bulk assay of fluorine, Using Rietveld analysis, quantitative estimates of the fluorosilicate minerals in these products were generated. Marrying of the bulk assay with the respective mineralogical assay enabled the understanding of the flotation behavior of fluorine and it's associated mineralogy. Talc and phlogopite were found to be the causes of the fluorine problem at Ok Tedi. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The structure of gold cyanide, AuCN, has been determined at 10 and 300 K using total neutron diffraction. The structure consists of infinite -Au-(CN)-Au-(CN)-Au-(CN)- linear chains, hexagonally packed, with the gold atoms in sheets. The Au-C and Au-N bond lengths are found to be identical, with d(Au-C/N) = 1.9703(5) Angstrom at 300 K. This work supersedes a previous study, by others, which used Rietveld analysis of neutron Bragg diffraction in isolation, and found these bonds to have significantly different lengths (Deltad = 0.24 Angstrom) at 300 K. The total correlation function, T(r), at 10 and 300 K, has been modeled using information derived from total diffraction. The broadening of inter- and intrachain correlations differs markedly due to random displacements of the chains in the direction of the chain axes. This is a consequence of the relatively weak bonding between the chains. An explanation for the negative thermal expansion in the c-direction, which occurs between 10 and 300 K, is presented.

The addition of both Ti-C and Cr as grain refiners in Nd-Fe-B nanocomposites substantially increases the coercive field Hc. This motived our investigation of the effect of Ti-C and Cr on Pr-Fe-B nanocomposites. Melt-spun ribbons of composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0; 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1) and (Nd(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.97-x)Cr(x)(TiC)(0.03)(x = 0.5 and 1) were produced for study. For a Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr, Hc = 12.5 kOe. However, the energy product was limited to 13.6 MGOe by the remanence value. Rietveld analysis of X-ray spectra showed the ribbons to consist of predominantly hard (similar to 70 wt%) R(2)Fe(14)B, the soft phase being (similar to 30 wt%) alpha-Fe. Mossbauer measurements at 300 K are consistent with a reduced hyperfine field for the hard magnetic phase due to the Cr addition. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy images showed the Pr nanocomposite with 1% Cr to have an increased average grain size.

Composite solid electrolytes were prepared by thoroughly mixing ZrO2:8 mol% MgO (Z8Mg) and ZrO(2):3 mol% Y(2)O(3) (Z3Y) ceramic powders followed by pressing and sintering at 1500 degrees C/1 h. The properties of the sintered pellets were studied by X-ray diffraction for evaluation of the structural phases by the Rietveld method, by high-temperature dilatometry for analysis of the thermal shrinkage/expansion behavior, and by impedance spectroscopy for determination of the oxide ion conductivity. The x(Z8Mg)+(1-x)(Z3Y) specimens, x= 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, are partially stabilized (monoclinic, cubic and tetragonal phases) with density >94% of the theoretical density and show thermal shock resistance and electrical conductivity values suitable for high-temperature oxygen gas detection. One-end closed tube samples of the composite solid electrolytes were assembled in Pt/Z8Mg+Z3Y/Cr+Cr(2)O(3)/Pt electrochemical cells for exposure to different levels of oxygen in the 1-850 ppm range. The total electrical conductivity increases for increasing the relative Z3Y content. Addition of Z3Y to Z8Mg (80 wt.%-20 wt.%) suppresses the electronic contribution to the electrical conductivity at 620 degrees C. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Different compositions of Ni0,5-xCuxZn0,5Fe2O4 and Ni0,5-xCoxZn0,5Fe2O4 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3 were synthesized ferrite y the citrate precursor method. The stoichiometric compositions were calcined in air at 350°C and then pressed into pellets and toroids. The pressed samples were sintered at temperatures of 1000, 1050 and 1100°C/3h in air control at the speed of heating and cooling. The calcined powders were characterized by XRD, TGA / DTG, FTIR, SEM and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and the sintered samples by XRD, SEM, MAV, density and measurements of permeability and magnetic losses. There was pure phase formation ferrimagnetism applied at all temperatures except for A-I composition at all sintering temperatures and A-II only at a temperature of 1100°C. Crystallite sizes were obtained by Rietveld analysis, nanometer size from 11 to 20 nm for the calcined powders. For SEM, the sintered samples showed grain size between 1 and 10 micrometers. Bulk density (ρ) of sintered material presented to the Families almost linear behavior with increasing temperature and a tendency to decrease with increasing concentration of copper, different behavior of the B Family, where the increase in temperature decreased the density. The magnetic measurements revealed the powder characteristics of a soft ferrimagnetic material. Two processes of magnetization were considered, the superparamagnetism at low temperatures (350°C) and the formation of magnetic domains at higher temperatures. Obtaining the best parameters for P and B-II magnetic ferrites at high temperatures. The sintered material at 1000°C showed a relative permeability (μ) from 50 to 800 for the A Family and from 10 to 600 for the B Family. The samples sintered at 1100°C, B Family showed a variation from 10 to 1000 and the magnetic loss (tan δ) of A and B Families, around of 1. The frequency response of the toroidal core is in the range of 0.3 kHz. Several factors contribute to the behavior of microstructure considering the quantities μ and tan δ, such as the grain size, inter-and intragranular porosity, amount of grain boundary and the aspects of the dynamics of domain walls at high frequencies.
