Austenitization with lower temperature and intercritical annealing were introduced in the treatment of a maraging steel with a composition of Fe–12.94Ni–1.61Al–1.01Mo–0.23Nb (wt.%). Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the microstructure after austenitization at 950 °C and intercritical annealing, followed by aging at 485 and 600 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied to evaluate the formation of retained or reverted austenite. Thermodynamic calculation was employed to calculate equilibrium phase mole fractions. Hardness and Charpy impact toughness of the steel were measured. Intercritical annealing treatments did not result in significant increase of hardness either before or after aging. The Charpy impact toughness of the alloy in aged condition was enhanced after austenitization at 950 °C. No austenite was observed in XRD. However, suspected reverted austenite was found after austenitization at 950 °C followed by aging at 600 °C for 4 h. Relationships among heat treatment, microstructure and mechanical properties are discussed.

Welding system has now been concentrated on the development of new process to achieve cost savings, higher productivity and better quality in manufacturing industry. Discrete alternate supply of shielding gas is a new technology that alternately supplies the different kinds of shielding gases in weld zone. As the newdevelopedmethods compared to the previous generalwelding with a mixing supply of shielding gas, it cannot only increase thewelding quality, but also reduce the energy by 20% and the emission rate of fume. As a result, under thesamewelding conditions,comparedwith thewelding by supplying pure argon, argon + 67% helium mixture by conventional method and thewelding by supplying alternately pure argon and pure helium by alternate method showed the increased welding speed. Also, the alternate method showed the same welding speed with argon + 67% helium mixture without largely deteriorating of weld penetration. The alternate method with argon and helium compared with the conventional methods of pure argon and argon + 67% helium mixture produced the lowest degree of welding distortion.

The austenite decomposition in C-Mn steel containing boron was studied by continuous cooling from 1100 and 845 degreesC using the Jominy test. The results indicate that the different cooling speeds and the presence of boron refine and change the percentage of ferrite microstructure, martensite, and fine pearlite. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Determination of the volume fraction of retained austenite in a 300m steel by heat tinting technique

Applying the Heat Tinting Technique the microestrutural characterization of a 300M steel (medium carbon steel) was accomplished. The steel was austenitized for 20 min to 900°C, followed by holding at 400°C (in the bainitic temperature), with maintenance time of the material in the temperature of 1min, 5min and 30min, aiming at the formation of a multiphase structure. Through the metallographic analysis it is verified that, with the use of this technique, it is possible the determination of the volume fraction of the present phases in the 300M steel, especially in the identification and quantification of the retained austenite. Duplex and superduplex stainless steels are class of materials of a high importance for engineering purposes, since they have good mechanical properties combination and also are very resistant to corrosion. It is known as well that the chemical composition of such steels is very important to maintain some desired properties. In the past years, some works have reported that γ 2 precipitation improves the toughness of such steels, and its quantification may reveals some important information about steel quality. Thus, we propose in this work the automatic segmentation of γ 2 precipitation using two pattern recognition techniques: Optimum-Path Forest (OPF) and a Bayesian classifier. To the best of our knowledge, this if the first time that machine learning techniques are applied into this area. The experimental results showed that both techniques achieved similar and good recognition rates. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group.
