We experimentally demonstrate an on-chip compact and simple to fabricate silicon Schottky photodetector for telecom wavelengths operating on the basis of internal photoemission process. The device is realized using CMOS compatible approach of local-oxidation of silicon, which enables the realization of the photodetector and low-loss bus photonic waveguide at the same fabrication step. The photodetector demonstrates enhanced internal responsivity of 12.5mA/W for operation wavelength of 1.55µm corresponding to an internal quantum efficiency of 1%, about two orders of magnitude higher than our previously demonstrated results [22]. We attribute this improved detection efficiency to the presence of surface roughness at the boundary between the materials forming the Schottky contact. The combination of enhanced quantum efficiency together with a simple fabrication process provides a promising platform for the realization of all silicon photodetectors and their integration with other nanophotonic and nanoplasmonic structures towards the construction of monolithic silicon opto-electronic circuitry on-chip.

The unexpected decrease in measured responsivity observed in a specific GaN Schottky barrier photodetector (PD) at high reverse bias voltage was investigated and explained. Device equivalent transforms and small signal analysis were performed to analyse the test circuit. On this basis, a model was built which explained the responsivity decrease quantitatively. After being revised by this model, responsivity curves varying with bias voltage turned out to be reasonable. It is proved that the decrease is related to the dynamic parallel resistance of the photodiode. The results indicate that with a GaN Schottky PD, the choice of load resistance is restricted according to the dynamic parallel resistance of the device to avoid responsivity decay at high bias voltage.

The characteristics of a resonant cavity-enhanced InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot n-i-n photodiode with only a bottom distributed Bragg reflector used as the cavity mirror, are reported. To suppress the dark current, an AlAs layer is inserted into the device structure as the blocking layer. It turns out that the structure still possesses the resonant coupling nature, and makes Rabi splitting discernible in the photoluminescence spectra. The measured responsivity spectrum of the photocurrent shows a peak at lambda = 1030 nm, and increases rapidly as the bias voltage increases. A peak responsivity of 0.75 A/W, or equivalently an external quantum efficiency of 90.3%, is obtained at V-bias = -1.4 V.

An ultrathin fiber Bragg grating pressure sensor with enhanced sensitivity is demonstrated. A novel piston-like diaphragm with a hard core in the center is used as the sensing element to enhance the responsivity. Both the theoretical analysis and the experimental results show that the Young's modulus of the diaphragm and the radius of the hard core have significant effect on the pressure responsivity. By optimizing these two parameters, a pressure responsivity of 7 nm/MPa has been achieved.

The influence of defects on the responsivity of GaN Schottky barrier ultraviolet photodetectors with n(-)-GaN/n(+)-GaN layer structures is investigated. It is found that employing undoped GaN instead of Si-doped GaN as the n(-)-GaN layer brings about a higher responsivity due to a lower Ga vacancy concentration. On the other hand, the dislocations may increase the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enhance the surface recombination in the photodetectors. Employing undoped GaN and reducing the dislocation density in the n(-)-GaN layer are necessary to improve the responsivity of Schottky barrier photodetectors. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

A Schottky-based metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector is fabricated on 1 mu m-thick, crack-free GaN on Si (I 11) substrate using an optimized AlxGal-xN/AlN complex buffer layer. It exhibits a high responsivity of 4600A/W at 366nm which may be due to both a crack-free sample and high internal gain. The relationship between responsivity and bias voltage is also investigated. The experiment results indicate that the responsivity increases with the bias voltage and shows a tendency to saturate. (c) 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH &Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The cue-responsivity phenomenon to alcohol-associated stimuli in dependent drinkers was examined. In accordance with previous research, significant differences on both physiological and subjective cue-responsivity variables, between dependent and non-dependent drinkers were found. The unique contribution of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, evidence is presented which suggests that the Eysenckian personality traits of introversion and neuroticism are more predictive of cue-responsivity variance in the dependent drinkers than either severity of dependence or number of years' drinking. Secondly, within this dependent group, the relationship between cue-responsivity and 'craving' was seen to be less straightforward than traditionally thought. Specifically, it suggested that it was the extent to which autonomic cue-responsivity elicited increases in self-reported anxiety, which predicted most of the variance on the 'craving' variable. Taken together, these results raise the interesting possibility that a personality disposition akin to trait anxiety, and the degree to which cue exposure elicits state anxiety, mediated the relationship between cue-responsivity and 'craving' in dependent drinkers.

This thesis has been produced to meet the requirements of Brock University's Masters of Education program. It is the result of many peoples' reflections on and beliefs about the act of teaching in today's world. This manuscript is intended to provide the reader with an engaged interpretation of the dynamic field of teaching. In recognizing the ever-changing demands of the profession, this paper serves to provide the reader with a gathering of strategies or paradigm of action which an educator may employ to respond to the demands of his/her complex vocation. This gathering of strategies represents the phenomenon I have examined throughout this study: responsivity. What is it? Is it important for a practitioner to develop? If so, how can it be developed? In no way is this an "answer book" for teachers to adhere to. It is a collection of thoughts and ideas from an array of "insiders" who have experienced the phenomenon of responsivity. It will not provide the reader with immediate answers. What it will offer the reader is a deeper understanding of the related issues and concerns surrounding responsivity.

We recently demonstrated a functional relationship between fMRI responses within the amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex based upon whether subjects interpreted surprised facial expressions positively or negatively. In the present fMRI study, we sought to assess amygdala-medial prefrontal cortex responsivity when the interpretations of surprised faces were determined by contextual experimental stimuli, rather than subjective judgment. Subjects passively viewed individual presentations of surprised faces preceded by either a negatively or positively valenced contextual sentence (e. g., She just found $500 vs. She just lost $500). Negative and positive sentences were carefully matched in terms of length, situations described, and arousal level. Negatively cued surprised faces produced greater ventral amygdala activation compared to positively cued surprised faces. Responses to negative versus positive sentences were greater within the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, whereas responses to positive versus negative sentences were greater within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. The present study demonstrates that amygdala response to surprised facial expressions can be modulated by negatively versus positively valenced verbal contextual information. Connectivity analyses identified candidate cortical-subcortical systems subserving this modulation.

Offender rehabilitation has developed a stronghold on correctional practice in the past two decades. Further strengthening this grip have been three main  principles for effective practice; risk, needs and responsivity. This paper will focus on the responsivity principle, which dictates that effective rehabilitation involves consideration of an offender's cognitive behavioural characteristics and appropriate program delivery. In particular, this paper will analyse how this task has been approached by the Victorian Department of Justice in relation to  Indigenous offenders. Drawing on recent interviews with Justice staff, it will be  shown that Justice's approach to being responsive to the needs of Victorian Indigenous offenders is more complex than addressing cognitive behavioural characteristics and program delivery. It involves meaningful interactions that extend beyond the Department of Justice and Indigenous offenders to include Indigenous communities.

Composites polymer-ceramic using castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) as non-ferroelectric matrix and Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) as ceramic powder have been prepared at thin films form by spin coating. The samples are poled by appropriated electric field to show piezo and pyroelectric activity. The pyroelectric coefficient p(T) at 343 K is obtained to be equal 5.8 X 10(-5) C m(-2) K-1 for a composite with 32 vol.% of ceramic. The figure of merit of this composite is six times higher than of PZT ceramic. The voltage responsivity of the pyroelectric is reduced when the thickness of the sample increases. It was used modulated white light as radiation source to excite the sensor film. The electric signal of the sensor decreases with the light modulation frequency by 1/f. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. S.A. Seebeck nanoantennas, which are based on the thermoelectric effect, have been proposed for electromagnetic energy harvesting and infrared detection. The responsivity and frequency dependence of three types of Seebeck nanoantennas is obtained by electromagnetic simulation for different materials. Results show that the square spiral antenna has the widest bandwidth and the highest induced current of the three analyzed geometries. However, the geometry that presented the highest temperature gradient was the bowtie antenna, which favors the thermoelectric effect in a Seebeck nanoantenna. The results also show that these types of devices can present a voltage responsivity as high as 36  μV/W36  μV/W for titanium–nickel dipoles resonant at far-infrared wavelengths.
