A crescente necessidade de reduzir a dependência energética e a emissão de gases de efeito de estufa levou à adoção de uma série de políticas a nível europeu com vista a aumentar a eficiência energética e nível de controlo de equipamentos, reduzir o consumo e aumentar a percentagem de energia produzida a partir de fontes renováveis. Estas medidas levaram ao desenvolvimento de duas situações críticas para o setor elétrico: a substituição das cargas lineares tradicionais, pouco eficientes, por cargas não-lineares mais eficientes e o aparecimento da produção distribuída de energia a partir de fontes renováveis. Embora apresentem vantagens bem documentadas, ambas as situações podem afetar negativamente a qualidade de energia elétrica na rede de distribuição, principalmente na rede de baixa tensão onde é feita a ligação com a maior parte dos clientes e onde se encontram as cargas não-lineares e a ligação às fontes de energia descentralizadas. Isto significa que a monitorização da qualidade de energia tem, atualmente, uma importância acrescida devido aos custos relacionados com perdas inerentes à falta de qualidade de energia elétrica na rede e à necessidade de verificar que determinados parâmetros relacionados com a qualidade de energia elétrica se encontram dentro dos limites previstos nas normas e nos contratos com clientes de forma a evitar disputas ou reclamações. Neste sentido, a rede de distribuição tem vindo a sofrer alterações a nível das subestações e dos postos de transformação que visam aumentar a visibilidade da qualidade de energia na rede em tempo real. No entanto, estas medidas só permitem monitorizar a qualidade de energia até aos postos de transformação de média para baixa tensão, não revelando o estado real da qualidade de energia nos pontos de entrega ao cliente. A monitorização nestes pontos é feita periodicamente e não em tempo real, ficando aquém do necessário para assegurar a deteção correta de problemas de qualidade de energia no lado do consumidor. De facto, a metodologia de monitorização utilizada atualmente envolve o envio de técnicos ao local onde surgiu uma reclamação ou a um ponto de medição previsto para instalar um analisador de energia que permanece na instalação durante um determinado período de tempo. Este tipo de monitorização à posteriori impossibilita desde logo a deteção do problema de qualidade de energia que levou à reclamação, caso não se trate de um problema contínuo. Na melhor situação, o aparelho poderá detetar uma réplica do evento, mas a larga percentagem anomalias ficam fora deste processo por serem extemporâneas. De facto, para detetar o evento que deu origem ao problema é necessário monitorizar permanentemente a qualidade de energia. No entanto este método de monitorização implica a instalação permanente de equipamentos e não é viável do ponto de vista das empresas de distribuição de energia já que os equipamentos têm custos demasiado elevados e implicam a necessidade de espaços maiores nos pontos de entrega para conter os equipamentos e o contador elétrico. Uma alternativa possível que pode tornar viável a monitorização permanente da qualidade de energia consiste na introdução de uma funcionalidade de monitorização nos contadores de energia de determinados pontos da rede de distribuição. Os contadores são obrigatórios em todas as instalações ligadas à rede, para efeitos de faturação. Tradicionalmente estes contadores são eletromecânicos e recentemente começaram a ser substituídos por contadores inteligentes (smart meters), de natureza eletrónica, que para além de fazer a contagem de energia permitem a recolha de informação sobre outros parâmetros e aplicação de uma serie de funcionalidades pelo operador de rede de distribuição devido às suas capacidades de comunicação. A reutilização deste equipamento com finalidade de analisar a qualidade da energia junto dos pontos de entrega surge assim como uma forma privilegiada dado que se trata essencialmente de explorar algumas das suas características adicionais. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a possibilidade descrita de monitorizar a qualidade de energia elétrica de forma permanente no ponto de entrega ao cliente através da utilização do contador elétrico do mesmo e elaborar um conjunto de requisitos para o contador tendo em conta a normalização aplicável, as características dos equipamentos utilizados atualmente pelo operador de rede e as necessidades do sistema elétrico relativamente à monitorização de qualidade de energia.

The aim of the thesis was both to study wooden packaging waste reuse and refining generated in the forestry machine factory environment, and to find alternative wooden packaging waste utilization options in order to create a new operating model which would decrease the overall amount of waste produced. As environmental and waste legislation has become more rigid and companies' own environmental management systems’ requirements and control have increased, companies have had to consider their environmental aspects more carefully. Companies have to take into account alternative ways of reducing waste through an increase in reuse and recycling. A part of this waste is from different forms of packaging. In the metal industry the most heavily used packaging material is wooden packaging, as such material is heavy and the packaging has to be able to bear heavy stress. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the requirements of packaging and packaging waste legislation, as well as environmental management systems governing companies’ processing of their packaging waste, are studied. The theoretical part includes a process study of systems, which direct packaging waste and wooden packaging waste refining. In addition, methods related to the continuous improvement of these processes are introduced. This thesis concentrates on designing and creating a new operating model in relation to wooden packaging waste processing. The main target was to find an efficient model in order to decrease the total amount of wooden packaging waste and to increase refining. The empirical part introduces methods for approaches to wooden packaging waste re-utilization, as well as a description of a new operating model and its impact.

The biology and productivity of Myschocytarus drewseni were studied in semi urban conditions at Rio Claro, S P - Brazil. We observed 51 nest foundations, of which 24 (47%) were destroyed or predated, 13 (25.5 %) were abandoned and 14 (27.5%) completed the cycle. The life-span of colonies ranged from 44-427 days with a mean of 216.7 ± 140.6 days, producing 8-390 cells with a mean of 125.7 ± 137.9 cells, and 2-303 adults with a mean of 89.4 ± 110.36 adults. We observed a maximum of 3 utilizations/cell. This showed that the species presents asynchronous foundation and abandoningoccurs throughout the year. Also, the chance of a colony utilizing the same cells two or three times for adult production is highly dependent on the colony size/age, and the relation between them is positive, meaning that there is a greater chance of cell re-utilization in larger/older colonies.

The present study describes the incorporation of a complexing agent, dithiooxamide, into microcrystalline cellulose for use in the pre-concentration of Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous samples. The FTIR spectrum of the adsorbent exhibited an absorption band in the region of 800 cm-1, which confirmed the binding of the silylating agent to the matrix. Elemental analysis indicated the amount of 0.150 mmol g-1 of the complexing agent. The adsorption data were fit to the modified Langmuir equation, and the maximum amount of metal species extracted from the solution, Ns, was determined to be 0.058 and 0.072 mmol g-1 for Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The covering fraction φ, which was 0.39 and 0.48 for Cu(II) and Cd(II), respectively, was used to estimate a 1:2 (metal:ligand) ratio in the formed complex, and a binding model was proposed based on this information. The adsorbent was applied in the pre-concentration of natural water samples and exhibited an enrichment factor of approximately 50-fold for the species studied, which enabled its use in the analysis of trace metals in aqueous samples. The system was validated by the analysis of certified standard (1643e), and the adsorbent was stable for more than 20 cycles, thus enabling its safe reutilization. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. In this work, a silica surface chemically modified with [3-(2,2′-dipyridylamine)propyl] groups, named [3-(2,2′- dipyridylamine)propyl]silica (Si-Pr-DPA) was prepared, characterized, and evaluated for its heavy metal adsorption characteristics from aqueous solution. To our knowledge, we are the first authors who have reported the present modification. The material was characterized using infrared spectroscopy, SEM, and NMR 29Si and 13C solid state. Batch and column experiments were conducted to investigate for heavy metal removal from dilute aqueous solution by sorption onto Si-Pr-DPA. From a number of studies the affinity of various metal ions for the Si-Pr-DPA sorbent was determined to follow the order Fe(III) > Cr(III) >> Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Ni(II). Two standard reference materials were used for checking the accuracy and precision of the method. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of environmental samples. This ligand material has great advantage for adsorption of transition-metal ions from aqueous medium due to its high degree of organofunctionalization associated with the large adsorption capacity, reutilization possibility, and rapidity in reaching the equilibrium. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The use of stones to crack open encapsulated fruit is widespread among wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Cebus libidinosus) inhabiting savanna-like environments. Some populations in Serra da Capivara National Park (Piaui, Brazil), though, exhibit a seemingly broader toolkit, using wooden sticks as probes, and employing stone tools for a variety of purposes. Over the course of 701.5 hr of visual contact of two wild capuchin groups we recorded 677 tool use episodes. Five hundred and seventeen of these involved the use of stones, and 160 involved the use of sticks (or other plant parts) as probes to access water, arthropods, or the contents of insects` nests. Stones were mostly used as ""hammers""-not only to open fruit or seeds, or smash other food items, but also to break dead wood, conglomerate rock, or cement in search of arthropods, to dislodge bigger stones, and to pulverize embedded quartz pebbles (licking, sniffing, or rubbing the body with the powder produced). Stones also were used in a ""hammer-like"" fashion to loosen the soil for digging out roots and arthropods, and sometimes as ""hoes"" to pull the loosened soil. In a few cases, we observed the re-utilization of stone tools for different purposes (N = 3), or the combined use of two tools-stones and sticks (N = 4) or two stones (N = 5), as sequential or associative tools. On three occasions, the monkeys used smaller stones to loosen bigger quartz pebbles embedded in conglomerate rock, which were subsequently used as tools. Este proyecto tiene por objeto el aprovechamiento de calor residual de corrientes de refinería, con bajo nivel térmico y su transformación en energía eléctrica, mediante el ciclo orgánico de Rankine (ORC). Este proceso es similar al ciclo básico de Rankine pero en vez de agua utiliza un fluido orgánico de elevado peso molecular. Este tipo de ciclos se puede utilizar para recuperar calor de fuentes de baja temperatura. Este calor se convierte en trabajo útil que se transforma en electricidad. El principio de trabajo del ciclo orgánico de Rankine es un fluido de trabajo en fase líquida que se bombea a una caldera, donde se evapora y tras pasar a través de una turbina, se condensa de nuevo para iniciar el ciclo. Para la elección de las tecnologías ORC se realizó un estudio de las disponibles en el mercado y se llevó a cabo un análisis de las corrientes con calor residual disponibles en la refinería. Seleccionadas las tecnologías, se realizó un análisis de viabilidad del uso de ciclos ORC para el aprovechamiento de la energía residual en la refinería. Los resultados confirmaron que la aplicación de estos ciclos ORC es rentable, desde el punto de vista económico, técnico y medioambiental. ABSTRACT The objective of the project is the utilization of waste heat from low thermal refinery streams and its subsequent transformation into electrical energy through the application of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). This process is similar to Rankine’s basic cycle but instead of water it uses a heavier molecular organic fluid. This type of cycles can be put into use to recover heat from low temperature sources. The heat transforms into useful energy that is converted into electricity. The working principle of the Organic Rankine Cycle is an active fluid in liquid phase which is pumped into a boiler where it evaporates and, after passing through a turbine, it condenses once more restarting the whole cycle over again. Before choosing the ORC technologies, a study was conducted on those products available in the market and an analysis of the waste streams in the refinery was also carried out. Having chosen the technologies, a feasibility study was performed on the use of ORC cycles for the re-utilization of waste energy in the refinery. The results confirmed that the use of ORC cycles is profitable, making it attractive from an economical, technical and environmental point of view.

In this paper the authors intend to demonstrate the utilization of remote experimentation (RE) using mobile computational devices in the Science areas of the elementary school, with the purpose to develop practices that will help in the assimilation process of the subjects taught in classroom seeking to interlink them with the daily students? activities. Allying mobility with RE we intend to minimize the space-temporal barrier giving more availability and speed in the information access. The implemented architecture utilizes technologies and freely distributed softwares with open code resources besides remote experiments developed in the Laboratory of Remote Experimentation (RExLab) of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Brazil, through the physical computation platform of the ?open hardware of construction of our own. The utilization of open code computational tools and the integration of hardware to the 3D virtual worlds, accessible through mobile devices, give to the project an innovative face with a high potential for reproducibility and reusability.

We previously reported that pancreatic islet beta-cells from GLUT2-null mice lost the first phase but preserved the second phase of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Furthermore, we showed that the remaining secretory activity required glucose uptake and metabolism because it can be blocked by inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. Here, we extend these previous studies by analyzing, in GLUT2-null islets, glucose transporter isoforms and glucokinase expression and by measuring glucose usage, GSIS, and glucose-stimulated insulin mRNA biosynthesis. We show that in the absence of GLUT2, no compensatory expression of either GLUT1 or GLUT3 is observed and that glucokinase is expressed at normal levels. Glucose usage by isolated islets was increased between 1 and 6 mmol/l glucose but was not further increased between 6 and 20 mmol/l glucose. Parallel GSIS measurements showed that insulin secretion was not stimulated between 2.8 and 6 mmol/l glucose but was increased by >4-fold between 6 and 20 mmol/l glucose. Stimulation by glucose of total protein and insulin biosynthesis was also markedly impaired in the absence of GLUT2. Finally, we re-expressed GLUT2 in GLUT2-null beta-cells using recombinant lentiviruses and demonstrated a restoration of normal GSIS. Together, these data show that in the absence of GLUT2, glucose can still be taken up by beta-cells, albeit at a low rate, and that this transport activity is unlikely to be attributed to GLUT1 or GLUT3. This uptake activity, however, is limiting for normal glucose utilization and signaling to secretion and translation. These data further demonstrate the key role of GLUT2 in murine beta-cells for glucose signaling to insulin secretion and biosynthesis.

The steel industry produces, besides steel, also solid mineral by-products or slags, while it emits large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2). Slags consist of various silicates and oxides which are formed in chemical reactions between the iron ore and the fluxing agents during the high temperature processing at the steel plant. Currently, these materials are recycled in the ironmaking processes, used as aggregates in construction, or landfilled as waste. The utilization rate of the steel slags can be increased by selectively extracting components from the mineral matrix. As an example, aqueous solutions of ammonium salts such as ammonium acetate, chloride and nitrate extract calcium quite selectively already at ambient temperature and pressure conditions. After the residual solids have been separated from the solution, calcium carbonate can be precipitated by feeding a CO2 flow through the solution. Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is used in different applications as a filler material. Its largest consumer is the papermaking industry, which utilizes PCC because it enhances the optical properties of paper at a relatively low cost. Traditionally, PCC is manufactured from limestone, which is first calcined to calcium oxide, then slaked with water to calcium hydroxide and finally carbonated to PCC. This process emits large amounts of CO2, mainly because of the energy-intensive calcination step. This thesis presents research work on the scale-up of the above-mentioned ammonium salt based calcium extraction and carbonation method, named Slag2PCC. Extending the scope of the earlier studies, it is now shown that the parameters which mainly affect the calcium utilization efficiency are the solid-to-liquid ratio of steel slag and the ammonium salt solvent solution during extraction, the mean diameter of the slag particles, and the slag composition, especially the fractions of total calcium, silicon, vanadium and iron as well as the fraction of free calcium oxide. Regarding extraction kinetics, slag particle size, solid-to-liquid ratio and molar concentration of the solvent solution have the largest effect on the reaction rate. Solvent solution concentrations above 1 mol/L NH4Cl cause leaching of other elements besides calcium. Some of these such as iron and manganese result in solution coloring, which can be disadvantageous for the quality of the PCC product. Based on chemical composition analysis of the produced PCC samples, however, the product quality is mainly similar as in commercial products. Increasing the novelty of the work, other important parameters related to assessment of the PCC quality, such as particle size distribution and crystal morphology are studied as well. As in traditional PCC precipitation process, the ratio of calcium and carbonate ions controls the particle shape; a higher value for [Ca2+]/[CO32-] prefers precipitation of calcite polymorph, while vaterite forms when carbon species are present in excess. The third main polymorph, aragonite, is only formed at elevated temperatures, above 40-50 °C. In general, longer precipitation times cause transformation of vaterite to calcite or aragonite, but also result in particle agglomeration. The chemical equilibrium of ammonium and calcium ions and dissolved ammonia controlling the solution pH affects the particle sizes, too. Initial pH of 12-13 during the carbonation favors nonagglomerated particles with a diameter of 1 μm and smaller, while pH values of 9-10 generate more agglomerates of 10-20 μm. As a part of the research work, these findings are implemented in demonstrationscale experimental process setups. For the first time, the Slag2PCC technology is tested in scale of ~70 liters instead of laboratory scale only. Additionally, design of a setup of several hundreds of liters is discussed. For these purposes various process units such as inclined settlers and filters for solids separation, pumps and stirrers for material transfer and mixing as well as gas feeding equipment are dimensioned and developed. Overall emissions reduction of the current industrial processes and good product quality as the main targets, based on the performed partial life cycle assessment (LCA), it is most beneficial to utilize low concentration ammonium salt solutions for the Slag2PCC process. In this manner the post-treatment of the products does not require extensive use of washing and drying equipment, otherwise increasing the CO2 emissions of the process. The low solvent concentration Slag2PCC process causes negative CO2 emissions; thus, it can be seen as a carbon capture and utilization (CCU) method, which actually reduces the anthropogenic CO2 emissions compared to the alternative of not using the technology. Even if the amount of steel slag is too small for any substantial mitigation of global warming, the process can have both financial and environmental significance for individual steel manufacturers as a means to reduce the amounts of emitted CO2 and landfilled steel slag. Alternatively, it is possible to introduce the carbon dioxide directly into the mixture of steel slag and ammonium salt solution. The process would generate a 60-75% pure calcium carbonate mixture, the remaining 25-40% consisting of the residual steel slag. This calcium-rich material could be re-used in ironmaking as a fluxing agent instead of natural limestone. Even though this process option would require less process equipment compared to the Slag2PCC process, it still needs further studies regarding the practical usefulness of the products. Nevertheless, compared to several other CO2 emission reduction methods studied around the world, the within this thesis developed and studied processes have the advantage of existing markets for the produced materials, thus giving also a financial incentive for applying the technology in practice.

Information and communication technologies are the tools that underpin the emerging “Knowledge Society”. Exchange of information or knowledge between people and through networks of people has always taken place. But the ICT has radically changed the magnitude of this exchange, and thus factors such as timeliness of information and information dissemination patterns have become more important than ever.Since information and knowledge are so vital for the all round human development, libraries and institutions that manage these resources are indeed invaluable. So, the Library and Information Centres have a key role in the acquisition, processing, preservation and dissemination of information and knowledge. ln the modern context, library is providing service based on different types of documents such as manuscripts, printed, digital, etc. At the same time, acquisition, access, process, service etc. of these resources have become complicated now than ever before. The lCT made instrumental to extend libraries beyond the physical walls of a building and providing assistance in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of knowledge with a variety of digital tools. Thus, modern libraries are increasingly being re-defined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources.The research was conducted in the university libraries in Kerala State, India. lt was identified that even though the information resources are flooding world over and several technologies have emerged to manage the situation for providing effective services to its clientele, most of the university libraries in Kerala were unable to exploit these technologies at maximum level. Though the libraries have automated many of their functions, wide gap prevails between the possible services and provided services. There are many good examples world over in the application of lCTs in libraries for the maximization of services and many such libraries have adopted the principles of reengineering and re-defining as a management strategy. Hence this study was targeted to look into how effectively adopted the modern lCTs in our libraries for maximizing the efficiency of operations and services and whether the principles of re-engineering and- redefining can be applied towards this.Data‘ was collected from library users, viz; student as well as faculty users; library ,professionals and university librarians, using structured questionnaires. This has been .supplemented by-observation of working of the libraries, discussions and interviews with the different types of users and staff, review of literature, etc. Personal observation of the organization set up, management practices, functions, facilities, resources, utilization of information resources and facilities by the users, etc. of the university libraries in Kerala have been made. Statistical techniques like percentage, mean, weighted mean, standard deviation, correlation, trend analysis, etc. have been used to analyse data.All the libraries could exploit only a very few possibilities of modern lCTs and hence they could not achieve effective Universal Bibliographic Control and desired efficiency and effectiveness in services. Because of this, the users as well as professionals are dissatisfied. Functional effectiveness in acquisition, access and process of information resources in various formats, development and maintenance of OPAC and WebOPAC, digital document delivery to remote users, Web based clearing of library counter services and resources, development of full-text databases, digital libraries and institutional repositories, consortia based operations for e-journals and databases, user education and information literacy, professional development with stress on lCTs, network administration and website maintenance, marketing of information, etc. are major areas need special attention to improve the situation. Finance, knowledge level on ICTs among library staff, professional dynamism and leadership, vision and support of the administrators and policy makers, prevailing educational set up and social environment in the state, etc. are some of the major hurdles in reaping the maximum possibilities of lCTs by the university libraries in Kerala. The principles of Business Process Re-engineering are found suitable to effectively apply to re-structure and redefine the operations and service system of the libraries. Most of the conventional departments or divisions prevailing in the university libraries were functioning as watertight compartments and their existing management system was more rigid to adopt the principles of change management. Hence, a thorough re-structuring of the divisions was indicated. Consortia based activities and pooling and sharing of information resources was advocated to meet the varied needs of the users in the main campuses and off campuses of the universities, affiliated colleges and remote stations. A uniform staff policy similar to that prevailing in CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, etc. has been proposed by the study not only in the university libraries in kerala but for the entire country.Restructuring of Lis education,integrated and Planned development of school,college,research and public library systems,etc.were also justified for reaping maximum benefits of the modern ICTs.
