The following paper presents an overview of the Ph.D Thesis1 presented in [1], which compiles all the research done during the period of time between 2004-2007. In that dissertation the relay-assisted transmission with half-duplex relays is analyzed from different points of view. This study is motivated by the necessity of finding innovative solutions to cope with the requirements of next generation wireless services, and with current radio technology. The use of relayed communications represents a change of paradigm of conventional communications, and requires the definition and evaluation of protocols to be applied to single or multiple-user relay communication. With the two fold goal of enhancing spectral efficiency and homogenize service in cellular communications, system design is investigated at physical (type of transmissions of the relay, decoding mode, ..) and upper layers (resource allocation, dynamic link control).

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), esimerkkinä kolmannen sukupolven matkapuhelinjärjestelmästä pyrkii toistamaan GSM:n (Global System for Mobile Communications) menestyksen. UMTS:n kaupallinen toiminta on parhaillaan alkamassa ja ensimmäinen kaupallinen verkko on jo aloittanut toimintansa Japanissa. Tämä diplomityö antaa yleiskuvan UMTS:stä keskittyen radioverkkojärjestelmän (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network,UTRAN) radioresurssien hallintaan (Radio Resource Management, RRM). Työssä kuvataan radiorajapintojen toimintaa, mutta diplomityön pääaiheena on kuitenkin radioresurssien hallinta UMTS radioaliverkkojärjestelmien ylitse. Radioresurssien hallinta pitää sisällään joukon proseduureja, jotka vaikuttavat koko UTRAN:in rakenteen lävitse. On hyvin tärkeää saavuttaa oikea toiminnallisuus hajautettujen radioresurssien hallintaan jotta voitaisiin saavuttaa paras yhteyden laatu loppukäyttäjälle. Työssä käydään yksityiskohtaisesti lävitse radioresurssien hallinnan perusperiaatteet ja joukko proseduureja. RNSAP (Radio Network Subsystem Application Part) protokollaa tarkastellaan työssä esimerkkinä protokollasta joka osallistuu radioresurssien hallintaprosessiin.

In the last decade mobile wireless communications have witnessed an explosive growth in the user’s penetration rate and their widespread deployment around the globe. It is expected that this tendency will continue to increase with the convergence of fixed Internet wired networks with mobile ones and with the evolution to the full IP architecture paradigm. Therefore mobile wireless communications will be of paramount importance on the development of the information society of the near future. In particular a research topic of particular relevance in telecommunications nowadays is related to the design and implementation of mobile communication systems of 4th generation. 4G networks will be characterized by the support of multiple radio access technologies in a core network fully compliant with the Internet Protocol (all IP paradigm). Such networks will sustain the stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements and the expected high data rates from the type of multimedia applications to be available in the near future. The approach followed in the design and implementation of the mobile wireless networks of current generation (2G and 3G) has been the stratification of the architecture into a communication protocol model composed by a set of layers, in which each one encompasses some set of functionalities. In such protocol layered model, communications is only allowed between adjacent layers and through specific interface service points. This modular concept eases the implementation of new functionalities as the behaviour of each layer in the protocol stack is not affected by the others. However, the fact that lower layers in the protocol stack model do not utilize information available from upper layers, and vice versa, downgrades the performance achieved. This is particularly relevant if multiple antenna systems, in a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) configuration, are implemented. MIMO schemes introduce another degree of freedom for radio resource allocation: the space domain. Contrary to the time and frequency domains, radio resources mapped into the spatial domain cannot be assumed as completely orthogonal, due to the amount of interference resulting from users transmitting in the same frequency sub-channel and/or time slots but in different spatial beams. Therefore, the availability of information regarding the state of radio resources, from lower to upper layers, is of fundamental importance in the prosecution of the levels of QoS expected from those multimedia applications. In order to match applications requirements and the constraints of the mobile radio channel, in the last few years researches have proposed a new paradigm for the layered architecture for communications: the cross-layer design framework. In a general way, the cross-layer design paradigm refers to a protocol design in which the dependence between protocol layers is actively exploited, by breaking out the stringent rules which restrict the communication only between adjacent layers in the original reference model, and allowing direct interaction among different layers of the stack. An efficient management of the set of available radio resources demand for the implementation of efficient and low complexity packet schedulers which prioritize user’s transmissions according to inputs provided from lower as well as upper layers in the protocol stack, fully compliant with the cross-layer design paradigm. Specifically, efficiently designed packet schedulers for 4G networks should result in the maximization of the capacity available, through the consideration of the limitations imposed by the mobile radio channel and comply with the set of QoS requirements from the application layer. IEEE 802.16e standard, also named as Mobile WiMAX, seems to comply with the specifications of 4G mobile networks. The scalable architecture, low cost implementation and high data throughput, enable efficient data multiplexing and low data latency, which are attributes essential to enable broadband data services. Also, the connection oriented approach of Its medium access layer is fully compliant with the quality of service demands from such applications. Therefore, Mobile WiMAX seems to be a promising 4G mobile wireless networks candidate. In this thesis it is proposed the investigation, design and implementation of packet scheduling algorithms for the efficient management of the set of available radio resources, in time, frequency and spatial domains of the Mobile WiMAX networks. The proposed algorithms combine input metrics from physical layer and QoS requirements from upper layers, according to the crosslayer design paradigm. Proposed schedulers are evaluated by means of system level simulations, conducted in a system level simulation platform implementing the physical and medium access control layers of the IEEE802.16e standard.

In general, modern networks are analysed by taking several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) into account, their proper balance being required in order to guarantee a desired Quality of Service (QoS), particularly, cellular wireless heterogeneous networks. A model to integrate a set of KPIs into a single one is presented, by using a Cost Function that includes these KPIs, providing for each network node a single evaluation parameter as output, and reflecting network conditions and common radio resource management strategies performance. The proposed model enables the implementation of different network management policies, by manipulating KPIs according to users' or operators' perspectives, allowing for a better QoS. Results show that different policies can in fact be established, with a different impact on the network, e.g., with median values ranging by a factor higher than two.

In a heterogeneous cellular networks environment, users behaviour and network deployment configuration parameters have an impact on the overall Quality of Service. This paper proposes a new and simple model that, on the one hand, explores the users behaviour impact on the network by having mobility, multi-service usage and traffic generation profiles as inputs, and on the other, enables the network setup configuration evaluation impact on the Joint Radio Resource Management (JRRM), assessing some basic JRRM performance indicators, like Vertical Handover (VHO) probabilities, average bit rates, and number of active users, among others. VHO plays an important role in fulfilling seamless users sessions transfer when mobile terminals cross different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) boundaries. Results show that high bit rate RATs suffer and generate more influence from/on other RATs, by producing additional signalling traffic to a JRRM entity. Results also show that the VHOs probability can range from 5 up to 65%, depending on RATs cluster radius and users mobility profile.

Cooperative transmission can be seen as a "virtual" MIMO system, where themultiple transmit antennas are in fact implemented distributed by the antennas both at the source and the relay terminal. Depending on the system design, diversity/multiplexing gainsare achievable. This design involves the definition of the type of retransmission (incrementalredundancy, repetition coding), the design of the distributed space-time codes, the errorcorrecting scheme, the operation of the relay (decode&forward or amplify&forward) and thenumber of antennas at each terminal. Proposed schemes are evaluated in different conditionsin combination with forward error correcting codes (FEC), both for linear and near-optimum(sphere decoder) receivers, for its possible implementation in downlink high speed packetservices of cellular networks. Results show the benefits of coded cooperation over directtransmission in terms of increased throughput. It is shown that multiplexing gains areobserved even if the mobile station features a single antenna, provided that cell wide reuse of the relay radio resource is possible.

ABSTRACT In recent times, the traffic generated by users of mobile networks has grown very significantly, and this increase is expected to continue steadily over the next few years. Traffic carried by mobile networks has increased fivefold between 2010 and 2013, and forecasts indicate a tenfold increase between 2013 and 2019. Furthermore, a great part of this traffic is generated inside buildings. Currently, between 70% and 80% of mobile traffic occurs inside buildings, and this percentage is expected to increase to about 95% in the coming years. In this situation, with mobile traffic growing exponentially, especially indoors, the deployment of specific solutions for these environments can be essential to avoid a constant saturation of mobile networks. On the one hand, from the point of view of mobile operators, these solutions will help to reduce the problems of coverage, improve the efficiency of radio resource usage and reduce the cost of infrastructures. Also, from the point of view of users, these specific indoor deployments can both guarantee high data transfer rates and meet the high quality of service requirements associated with real-time services. The complexity of the actions required to carry out the deployment of specific solutions indoors varies considerably depending on the type of scenario they are conceived to. On the one hand, residential scenarios are characterized by massive deployments of base stations made by the user, so there is no possibility of any prior planning. In this case only self-configuration, selfoptimization and self-healing methods can be considered for performance optimization. On the other hand, specific in-building solutions in enterprise environments requires a previous design and planning phase, whose difficulty is closely associated with the size of the deployment scenario and the number of base stations required. The design and configuration of the elements included in the solution will determine its performance and the quality of service that can be guaranteed. The objective of the present Thesis is to address two of the main issues related to specific indoor solutions, such as the difficulty of assessing the capacity and the performance which can be guaranteed by means of self-deployments and the complexity of the design and configuration of deployments in enterprise environments requiring a large number of base stations. The main contribution of this thesis consists of the development of techniques and simple tools for design and performance analysis of indoor wireless networks deployments. The main results include the development of procedures for assessing the capacity and performance of self-deployments in residential scenarios, the performance analysis of real residential self-deployments using the proposed procedures and the development of techniques for the automatic design of wireless networks in enterprise environments. The results obtained have allowed the creation of specific software tools for both the performance analysis of self-deployments and the design and deployment of in-building solutions in enterprise scenarios. These software tools are conceived to systematize the practical application of the contributions of this Thesis.

ABSTRACT There is almost no doubt that railways are one of the symbols of the technological and social progress of humanity. However, most of the time railways have been somewhat reluctant to embrace new technologies, gaining some reputation of being conservative. But in the last years, together with the massive boom of high speed lines, subways and trams all over the world, some technologies have broken through these conservative resistance. The one which concerns us now is one of the most value-added (both today and in the future): mobile communications. The state-of-the-art of these technologies in the railway field could be called as incipient, or (following the mobile communications’ notation) ‘second generation’. GSM-R, the best example of mobile communications in railways is a success story that shows perfectly the state-of-the-art of this field: it provided a noticeable mark-up but also required a great standardization effort; it also meant a huge step forward in the reliability of these systems but it also needs to face some scalability issues and some capacity problems. It looks more than feasible that in 2025 the alternative to GSM-R should be already available. Anyway, the vision here should be forgetting about expensive niche products, and embracing open standards like public mobile communications do. The main idea behind this Thesis is that LTE could be a technology that provides a lot of added value to the necessities of the railways of today and the future. And not only to highspeed lines, but also to the so-called conventional rail, subways and tramways. Due to the fact that even today, propagation in tunnels and influence of car bodies is far from being full-studied, we measured in a very exhaustive way the EM propagation in these two environments. Also, multiantenna systems are one of the basic foundations of the modern communications systems, so we experimentally verified the feasibility of using such a system in a train-towayside in a tunnel. Moreover, from the measurements carried out we proved the existence of some physical phenomena that could imply a decrease in the performance of these multiantenna systems. In third place, we have explored the influence of high-speed in the whole performance of the network, from the mobility management point-of-view. This high-speed movement is one of the most relevant challenges for the mobile communications networks. The emphasis was placed on the mobility aspects of the radio resource management. Finally, the Thesis closure is an identification of the future communication services that could provide a bigger addition of value to railways, and also the requirements that imply to mobile communications networks. For all the previous for scenarios depicted before (propagation, multiantenna systems, mobility and challenges) we provide some contributions already published (or submitted for revision or still in progress) on publications and international conferences.

With the advent of 5G, several novel network paradigms and technologies have been proposed to fulfil the key requirements imposed. Flexibility, efficiency and scalability, along with sustainability and convenience for expenditure have to be addressed in targeting these brand new needs. Among novel paradigms introduced in the scientific literature in recent years, a constant and increasing interest lies in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as network nodes supporting the legacy terrestrial network for service provision. Their inherent features of moving nodes make them able to be deployed on-demand in real-time. Which, in practical terms, means having them acting as a base station (BS) when and where there is the highest need. This thesis investigates then the potential role of UAV-aided mobile radio networks, in order to validate the concept of adding an aerial network component and assess the system performance, from early to later stages of its deployment. This study is intended for 5G and beyond systems, to allow time for the technology to mature. Since advantages can be manyfold, the aerial network component is considered at the network layer under several aspects, from connectivity to radio resource management. A particular emphasis is given to trajectory design, because of the efficiency and flexibility it potentially adds to the infrastructure. Two different frameworks have been proposed, to take into account both a re-adaptable heuristic and an optimal solution. Moreover, diverse use cases are taken under analysis, from mobile broadband to machine and vehicular communications. The thesis aim is thus to discuss the potential and advantages of UAV-aided systems from a broad perspective. Results demonstrate that the technology has good prospects for diverse scenarios with a few arrangements.

Nowadays, application domains such as smart cities, agriculture or intelligent transportation, require communication technologies that combine long transmission ranges and energy efficiency to fulfill a set of capabilities and constraints to rely on. In addition, in recent years, the interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) providing wireless connectivity in such scenarios is substantially increased thanks to their flexible deployment. The first chapters of this thesis deal with LoRaWAN and Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT), which recent trends identify as the most promising Low Power Wide Area Networks technologies. While LoRaWAN is an open protocol that has gained a lot of interest thanks to its simplicity and energy efficiency, NB-IoT has been introduced from 3GPP as a radio access technology for massive machine-type communications inheriting legacy LTE characteristics. This thesis offers an overview of the two, comparing them in terms of selected performance indicators. In particular, LoRaWAN technology is assessed both via simulations and experiments, considering different network architectures and solutions to improve its performance (e.g., a new Adaptive Data Rate algorithm). NB-IoT is then introduced to identify which technology is more suitable depending on the application considered. The second part of the thesis introduces the use of UAVs as flying Base Stations, denoted as Unmanned Aerial Base Stations, (UABSs), which are considered as one of the key pillars of 6G to offer service for a number of applications. To this end, the performance of an NB-IoT network are assessed considering a UABS following predefined trajectories. Then, machine learning algorithms based on reinforcement learning and meta-learning are considered to optimize the trajectory as well as the radio resource management techniques the UABS may rely on in order to provide service considering both static (IoT sensors) and dynamic (vehicles) users. Finally, some experimental projects based on the technologies mentioned so far are presented.
