In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), pigs are raised almost exclusively by smallholders either in periurban areas of major cities such as Kinshasa or in rural villages. Unfortunately, little information is available regarding pig production in the Western part of the DRC, wherefore a survey was carried out to characterize and compare 319 pig production systems in their management and feeding strategies, along a periurban - rural gradient inWestern provinces of the DRC. Pig breeding was the main source of income (43%) and half of respondents were active in mixed pig and crop production, mainly vegetable garden. Depending on the location, smallholders owned on average 18 pigs, including four sows. Piglet mortality rate varied from 9.5 to 21.8% while average weaned age ranged between 2.2 and 2.8 months. The major causes of mortality reported by the farmers were African swine fever 98 %, swine erysipelas (60 %), erysipelas trypanosomiasis (31 %), swine worm infection (17 %), and diarrhoea (12 %). The majority of the pigs were reared in pens without free roaming and fed essentially with locally available by-products and forage plants whose nature varied according with the location of the farm. The pig production systems depended on the local environment; particularly in terms of workforces, herd structure and characteristics, production parameters, pig building materials, selling price and in feed resources. It can be concluded that an improvement of Congolese pig production systems should consider (1) a reduction of inbreeding, (2) an improvement in biosafety to reduce the incidence of African swine fever and the spread of other diseases, and (3) an improvement in feeding practices.

The number of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases has increased over the past 10 years in Brazil, especially in the North and Northeast regions of the country. The aim of this study was to evaluate the urbanisation of VL vectors in Barcarena, Pará, an area in northern Brazil where VL is endemic. Sandflies were captured using Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps along an urban-rural gradient. The CDC traps were installed inside hen houses at a height of 150 cm. A total of 5,089 sandflies were collected and 11 species were identified. The predominant species was Lutzomyia longipalpis (rate of 95.15%), which suggests its participation in the transmission of VL. A total of 1,451 Lu. longipalpis females were dissected and no Leishmania infections were detected. Most of the sandflies were captured at the border of a forest (88.25%) and no flies were captured in the urban area, which suggests that transmission is still restricted to rural sites. However, the fact that a specimen was collected in an intermediate area indicates that urbanisation is a real possibility and that vector monitoring is important.

According to UN provisions in the period from 2007 to 2050 world population will grow up to 9200 million people. In fact, for the first time in history, in the year 2008 world urban population became higher than rural population. The increase of urban areas and their transport infrastructures has influenced agricultural land use due to their irreversible change, especially when they remain as periurban vacant land, losing their character and identity. In the Europe of the nineties, the traditional urban-rural gradient, characterized by a neat contact between both land types, has become so complex that it has change to a gradient in which it is difficult to separate urban and rural land uses. [Antrop 2004]. A literature review has been made on methodologies used for the urban-rural gradient analysis. One of these methodologies was selected that integrates ecological characterization based on the use of spatial metrics and geographical characterization based on spatial components. Cartographical sources used were Corine Land Cover at 1: 100000 scale and the Spanish Land Use Information System at 1:25000 scale. Urban-rural gradient paradigm is an analysis methodology, coming from landscape ecology, which enables to investigate how urbanization provokes changes in ecological patterns and processes into landscape. [Hahs and McDonnell 2006].The present research adapt this methodology to study the urban-rural gradient in the outskirts of Madrid, Toledo and Guadalajara. Both scales (1:25000 and 1:100000) were simultaneously used to reach the next objectives: 1) Analysis of landscape pattern dynamics in relation to distance to the town centre and major infrastructures. 2) Analysis of landscape pattern dynamics in the fringe of protected areas. The paper presents a new approach to the urban-rural relationship which allows better planning and management of urban áreas.

El objetivo de esta tesis es proponer una metodología capaz de cuantificar la dinámica paisajística a lo largo del gradiente urbano – rural perteneciente al sur de la Región Metropolitana de Madrid y su entorno. Esta tesis se estructura en ocho capítulos, planos y anejos. El primero se refiere a los antecedentes tanto conceptuales como metodológicos. Los primeros se centran en los diversos enfoques existentes en relación al estudio de la dinámica paisajística, con el objetivo de encontrar los puntos en común existentes entre el enfoque del metabolismo social, el de la ecología del paisaje y el humanista, para obtener un diagnóstico que permita entender la complejidad de la realidad a la que esta Tesis se enfrenta. Los segundos se centran en los antecedentes de carácter metodológico que también desde diversos enfoques han abordado el análisis de la dinámica paisajística. El segundo capítulo se centra en los objetivos concretos derivados del objetivo general ya expresado, la tesis considera que para comprender y cuantificar la dinámica hay que identificar en primer lugar los procesos de transformación, como manifestación espacial de los factores socioeconómicos y naturales responsables en última instancia de la variación de los patrones paisajísticos existentes. En segundo lugar se identifican los patrones paisajísticos con el objetivo de analizar sus características espaciales y su evolución en el período analizado. Por último se identifican los procesos paisajísticos, es decir qué tipos de variaciones espaciales se producen en los patrones paisajísticos como consecuencia de los procesos de transformación identificados así como su pauta de distribución a lo largo del gradiente urbano ‐ rural. El tercer capítulo se dedica a la caracterización del ámbito de estudio, ésta se extiende al sur del límite del suelo urbano de la capital madrileña en el año 1990, comprende la totalidad de los municipios madrileños que contactan con los municipios castellano – manchegos que se encuentran en el área de influencia de la capital, abarcando el área 9.968 km2. El cuarto capítulo se centra en la metodología. Como material de partida se ha utilizado en la cartografía del Corine Land Cover y como herramienta de análisis se ha utilizado los Sistemas de Información Geográfica. En primer lugar se identifican los procesos de transformación, acaecidos en los períodos 1990 – 2000 y 2000 – 2006, mediante la aplicación de matrices de transición. Se han identificado cuatro tipos de procesos dinámicos: Urbanización, abandono, renaturalización y agrarización. Se ha realizado un análisis de indicadores compuestos lo que ha permitido identificar los tipos de patrones paisajísticos existentes a lo largo del gradiente urbano – rural. Del mismo modo se ha calculado la variación de los indicadores individuales para identificar los procesos paisajísticos mediante el análisis de indicadores compuestos que se produjeron en el período 1990 – 2000 y 2000 – 2006. En el quinto capítulo se aportan los resultados tanto de carácter cuantitativo como gráfico de los tres componentes analizados tanto de forma independiente como integrada. En el sexto capítulo se describen las conclusiones producto de la investigación realizada. En el séptimo capítulo se identifican qué líneas de investigación podrían desarrollarse en el futuro para continuar la línea de investigación iniciada con esta tesis. It´s structured in eight chapters, planes and annexes: the first one describes previous research. Firstly to make a diagnosis of the effects of landscape dynamic we have performed an integrated analysis from social metabolism, landscape ecology and the humanistic point of view. Secondly we have focused on previous methodological research mainly developped by landscape ecology. The second chapter focuses on specific objectives derived from the general objective. The thesis considers that to understand and quantify landscape dynamics must first identify the transformation processes: spatial manifestation of natural and socioeconomics factors that induce the change of landscape patterns. Secondly landscape patterns have been identified in order to analyze their spatial characteristics and evolution. Finally the landscape processes have been identified, i.e. what kind of spatial variations cause changes in landscape patterns along urban – rural gradient. The third chapter describes the study area. The study area occupies 9968 km2. It covers the area to the south of Madrid’s 1990 urban land area, and takes in the southeast of the Madrid Autonomous Region plus all the municipal areas of the Castilla–La Mancha Autonomous Region directly influenced by the expansion of Madrid. The fourth chapter contains the methodology. To identify the changes in the landscape of the study area, the land cover data for the area held in the CORINE LandCover Project Database was examined. To characterize the transformations processes in the period 1990 ‐ 2000 and 2000 – 2006, transition matrices were constructed. We have identified four clear changes: Urbanization, renaturalization, abandonment and agrarianization. We have characterized landscape patterns using composite indicators by integrating individual spatial metrics. Similarly we have characterized landscape processes using composite indicators by integrating the variation of individual spatial metrics. Chapter fifth includes the results, both for each component and its final integration. The conclusions of this research have been described in the sixth chapter. The seventh chapter describes what kind of investigations could be done in the future.

Landscape is shaped by natural environment and increasingly by human activity. In landscape ecology, the concept of landscape can be defined as a kilometre-scale mosaic formed by different land-use types. In Helsinki Metropolitan Region, the landscape change caused by urbanization has accelerated after the 1950s. Prior to that, the landscape of the region was mainly only shaped by agriculture. The goal of this study was in addition to describing the landscape change to discuss the factors impacting the landscape change and evaluate thelandscape ecological impacts of the change. Three study areas at different distances from Helsinki city centre were chosen in order to look at the landscape change. Study areas were Malmi, Espoo and Mäntsälä regions representing different parts of the urban-to-rural gradient in 1955, 1975, 1990 and 2009. Land-use of the maps was then digitized into five classes: agricultural lands, semi-natural grasslands, built areas, waters and others using GIS methods. First, landscape change was studied using landscape ecological indices. Indices used were PLAND i.e. the proportions of the different land-use types in the landscape; MPS, SHEI and SHDI which describe fragmentation and heterogeneity of the landscape; and MSI and ED which are measures of patch shape. Second, landscape change was studied statistically in relation to topography, soil and urban structure of the study areas. Indicators used concerning urban structure were number of residents, car ownership and travel-related zones of urban form which indicate the degree of urban sprawl within the study areas. For the statistical analyses, each of the 9.25 x 9.25 km sized study areas was further divided into grids with resolution of 0.25 x 0.25 kilometres. Third, the changes in the green structure of the study areas were evaluated. The landscape change reflected by the proportions of the land-use types was the most notable in Malmi area where a large amount of agricultural land was developed from 1955 to 2009. The proportion of semi-natural grasslands also showed an interesting pattern in relation to urbanization. When urbanization started, a great number of agricultural lands were abandoned and turned into semi-natural grasslands but as the urbanization accelerated, the number of semi-natural grasslands started to decline because of urban densification. Landscape fragmentation and heterogeneity were the most widespread in Espoo study area which is not only because of the great differences in relative heights within the region but also its location in the rural-urban fringe. According to the results, urbanization induced agricultural lands to be more regular in shape both spatially and temporally whereas for built areas and semi-natural grasslands the impact of urbanization was reverse. Changes in landscape were the most insignificant in the most rural study area Mäntsälä. In Mäntsälä, built area per resident showed the greatest values indicating a widespread urban sprawl. The values were the smallest in highly urbanized Malmi study area. Unlike other study areas, in Mäntsälä the proportion of developing land in the ecologically disadvantageous cardependent zone was on the increase. On the other hand, the green structure of the Mäntsälä study area was the most advantageous whereas Malmi study area showed the most ecologically disadvantageous structure. Considering all the landscape ecological criteria used, the landscape structure of Espoo study area proved to be the best not least because of the great heterogeneity of its landscape. Thus the study confirmed the previous results according to which landscape heterogeneity is the most significant in areas exposed to a moderate human impact.

城市化及其生态效应是当前国际上主要研究热点之一。本文通过在沈阳南部沿城乡梯度采集0~10 cm、10~20 cm和20~30 cm三个层次土壤样品,研究城市化效应对土壤重金属和土壤线虫群落时空分布的影响,探讨了土壤线虫对重金属污染的指示作用。 研究发现,沿城乡梯度土壤重金属Cu、Zn、Pb和Cd全量及有效态含量呈现明显的梯度效应,说明城区比农村重金属污染严重。土壤线虫总数在不同采样时期、不同采样点和不同土层表现出显著差异,沿城乡梯度显著增加,并且随土壤深度的增加而显著减少。土壤线虫属的丰富度、香农-威纳多样性、优势度和均匀度指数也表现出显著的时空差异性。不同取样季节线虫各营养类群表现出极其显著的时间差异。城市土壤处理植物寄生线虫相对多度明显低于郊区和农村土壤处理,而食细菌线虫的相对多度显著高于郊区和农村处理。通过线虫区系分析可以看出,土壤食物网和环境状态沿城乡梯度呈现明显不同的分布格局。 通过对土壤线虫群落分布与有效态重金属分布的相关性研究可知,城市化所造成的土壤重金属污染主要对线虫总数、植物寄生线虫数量以及线虫群落多样性指数产生了显著影响,而对土壤线虫食物网相关指数的影响不显著。以上结果也表明,土壤线虫对城市化带来的重金属污染具有一定的指示作用。

To determine if urban residence is associated with an increased risk of anxiety/depression independent of psychosocial stressors, concentrated disadvantage or selective migration between urban and rural areas, this population wide record-linkage study utilised data on receipt of prescription medication linked to area level indicators of conurbation and disadvantage. An urban/rural gradient in anxiolytic and antidepressant use was evident that was independent of variation in population composition. This gradient was most pronounced amongst disadvantaged areas. Migration into increasingly urban areas increased the likelihood of medication. These results suggest increasing conurbation is deleterious to mental health, especially amongst residents of deprived areas

Although studies often report that densities of many forest birds are negatively related to urbanization, the mechanisms guiding this pattern are poorly understood. Our objective was to use a population simulation to examine the relative influence of six demographic and behavioral processes on patterns of avian abundance in urbanizing landscapes. We constructed an individual-based population simulation model representing the annual cycle of a Neotropical migratory songbird. Each simulation was performed under two landscape scenarios. The first scenario had similar proportions of high- and low-quality habitat across the urban to rural gradient. Under the first scenario, avian density was negatively related to urbanization only when rural habitats were perceived to be of higher quality than they actually were. The second landscape scenario had declining proportions of high-quality habitat as urbanization increased. Under the second scenario, each mechanism generated a negative relationship between density and urbanization. The strongest effect on density resulted when birds preferentially selected habitats in landscapes from which they fledged or were constrained from dispersing. The next strongest patterns occurred when birds directly evaluated habitat quality and accurately selected the highest-quality available territories. When birds selected habitats based on the presence of conspecifics, the density–urbanization relationship was only one-third the strength of other habitat selection mechanisms and only occurred under certain levels of population survival. Although differences in adult or nest survival in the face of random habitat selection still elicited reduced densities in urban landscapes, the relationships between urbanization and density were weaker than those produced by the conspecific attraction mechanism. Results from our study identify key predictions and areas for future research, including assessing habitat quality in urban and rural areas in order to determine if habitats in urban areas are underutilized.

Knowledge of how biota can be used to monitor ecosystem health and assess impacts by human alterations such as land use and management measures taken at different spatial scales is critical for improving the ecological quality of aquatic ecosystems. This knowledge in Uganda is very limited or unavailable yet it is needed to better understand the relationship between environmental factors at different spatial scales, assemblage structure and taxon richness of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, benthic invertebrate community patterns were sampled between June 2001 and April 2002 and analysed in relation to water quality and catchment land use patterns from three shallow near-shore bays characterized by three major land uses patterns: urban (Murchison Bay); semi-urban (Fielding Bay); rural (Hannington Bay). Variations in density and guild composition of benthic macro-invertebrates communities were evaluated using GIS techniques along an urban-rural gradient of land use and differences in community composition were related to dissolved oxygen and conductivity variation. Based on numerical abundance and tolerance values, Hilsenhoff's Biotic Index ofthe invertebrates was determined in order to evaluate the relative importance of water quality in the three bays. Murchison Bay supported a relatively taxa-poor invertebrate assemblage mainly comprising stenotopic and eurytopic populations of pollution-tolerant groups such as worms and Chironomus sp. with an overall depression in species diversity. On the contrary, the communities in Fielding and Hannington bays were quite similar and supported distinct and diverse assemblages including pollution-intolerant forms such as Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Odonata (dragonflies). The Hilsenhoff Biotic Index in Murchison Bay was 6.53. (indicating poor water quality) compared to 6.34 for Fielding Bay and 5.78 for Hannington Bay (both indicating fair water quality). The characterization of maximum taxa richness balanced among taxa groups with good representation of intolerant individuals in Hannington Bay relative to Fielding and Murchison bays concludes that the bay is the cleanest in terms of water quality. Contrary, the dominance of few taxa with many tolerant iqdividuals present in Murchison Bay indicates that the bay is degraded in terms of water quality. These result are ofimportance when planning conservation and management measures, implementing large-scale biomonitoring programs, and predicting how human alterations (e.g nutrient loading) affect water ecosystems. Therefore, analysis of water quality in relation to macro-invertebrate community composition patterns as bio-indicators can lead to further understanding of their responses to environmental manipulations and perturbations.

Rural livelihoods in developing countries can be enhanced by improving access to natural resources, services, and markets. In remote rural areas of the humid or semihumid tropics, forests represent an important resource for livelihoods. In countries like Laos, where most primary forest has been converted to secondary forest, and where an intricate and interlinked mosaic of forest and farmland prevails, people depend on secondary forests as a prime source of goods and services. The linkages between local livelihoods and secondary forest resources are subject to changes caused by improving accessibility. This article studies how accessibility affects the condition of forests and local livelihoods by comparing three villages along a gradient of accessibility in Phonxay district, Luang Prabang province, northern Laos. The results of this research show that accessibility strengthens the influence of the government and of markets, and that local livelihoods improve with increasing accessibility, while forest condition deteriorates.
