In an attempt to effectively integrate catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) and steam reforming (SR) reactions on the same catalyst, autothermal reforming (ATR) of n-octane was addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and carried out on a non-pyrophoric catalyst 0.3 wt.% Ru/K2O-CeO2/gamma-Al2O3. The ATR of n-octane was more efficient at the molar ratio Of O-2/C 0.35-0.45 and H2O/C 1.6-2.2 (independent parameters), respectively, and reforming temperature of 750-800 degrees C (dependent parameter). Among the sophisticated reaction network, the main reaction thread was deducted as: long-chain hydrocarbon -> CH4, short-chain hydrocarbon -> CO2, CO and H-2 formation by steam reforming, although the parallel CPO, decomposition and reverse water gas shift reaction took place on the same catalyst. Low temperature and high steam partial pressure had more positive effect on CH4 SR to produce CO2 other than CO. This was verified by the tendency of the outlet reformate to the equilibrium at different operation conditions. Furthermore, the loss of active components and the formation of stable but less active components in the catalyst in the harsh ATR atmosphere firstly make the CO inhibition capability suffer, then eventually aggravated the ATR performance, which was verified by the characterizations of X-ray fluorescence, BET specific surface areas and temperature programmed reduction. Polynorbornadiene and polynorbornene were synthesized via ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with [RuCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)(amine)] as catalyst precursors, amine = piperidine (1) or perhydroazepine (2) in the presence of 5 mu L of ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) ([monomer]/[Ru] = 5000; 40 degrees C with 1; 25 degrees C with 2). The effects of the solvent volume (2-8 mL of CHCl(3)) reaction time (5-120 min) and atmosphere type (argon and air) on the yields were investigated to observe the behavior of the two different precursors. Quantitative yields were obtained for 60 or 120 min regardless of the starting volumes, either in argon or air, with both Ru species. However, low yields were obtained for short times (5-30 min) when the reactions are performed with large volumes (6-8 mL). In argon, the yields were larger with 2, associated to a faster propagation reaction controlled by the Ru active species. In air, the yields were larger with 1, associated to a higher resistance to O(2) of the starting and propagating Ru species. The different activities between 1 and 2 are discussed considering the steric hindrance and electronic characteristics of the amines such as ancillary ligands and their arrangements with PPh(3) and Cl(-) ions in the metal centers. A number of different, characterised, supported and unsupported oxides of Ru(IV) and Ir(IV) have been tested for activity as a chlorine catalyst in the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions. All the different materials tested gave yields of chlorine of > 90% and first-order kinetics for the reduction of the Ce(IV) ions. The samples prepared by the Adams method were the most active of the materials tested and are typified by high surface areas and appreciable activities per unit area. The kinetics of the catalysed reduction of Ce(IV) ions by brine were studied in detail using an Ru(IV) oxide prepared by the Adams method and supported on TiO2 and the results were rationalised in terms of an electrochemical model in which the rate-determining step is the diffusion-controlled reduction of Ce(IV) ions. In support of this model the measured activation energies for the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions, catalysed by either a supported or unsupported Adams catalyst, were both close (18-21 kJ mol-1) to that expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction (ca. 15 kJ mol-1).

Using density functional theory, we have investigated the catalytic properties of bimetallic complex catalysts PtlAum(CO)n (l + m = 2, n = 1–3) in the reduction of SO2 by CO. Due to the strong coupling between the C-2p and metal 5d orbitals, pre-adsorption of CO molecules on the PtlAum is found to be very effective in not only reducing the activation energy, but also preventing poisoning by sulfur. As result of the coupling, the metal 5d band is broadened and down-shifted, and charge is transferred from the CO molecules to the PtlAum. As SO2 is adsorbed on the catalyst, partial charge moves to the anti-σ bonding orbitals between S and O in SO2, weakening the S–O bond strength. This effect is enhanced by pre-adsorbing up to three CO molecules, therefore the S–O bonds become vulnerable. Our results revealed the mechanism of the excellent catalytic properties of the bimetallic complex catalysts.

Depolymerization of purified organosolv eucalyptus wood lignin by the heterogeneous catalysts, cobalt polyphosphate (CoP2O6) and calcium phosphate (β-CaP2O6) was investigated. A total syringol yield of 16.7% was achieved with β-CaP2O6 in a methanol/water (50/50, wt/wt) solvent system after depolymerization at 300 ºC for 1 h, showing selectivity of the catalyst.
