The GMO Risk Assessment and Communication of Evidence (GRACE; www.grace-fp7.eu) project is funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme. A key objective of GRACE is to conduct 90-day animal feeding trials, animal studies with an extended time frame as well as analytical, in vitro and in silico studies on genetically modified (GM) maize in order to comparatively evaluate their use in GM plant risk assessment. In the present study, the results of two 90-day feeding trials with two different GM maize MON810 varieties, their near-isogenic non-GM varieties and four additional conventional maize varieties are presented. The feeding trials were performed by taking into account the guidance for such studies published by the EFSA Scientific Committee in 2011 and the OECD Test Guideline 408. The results obtained show that the MON810 maize at a level of up to 33 % in the diet did not induce adverse effects in male and female Wistar Han RCC rats after subchronic exposure, independently of the two different genetic backgrounds of the event

Se describen las variaciones de temperaturas y de tensiones durante la construcción de presas de hormigón compactado. The curing of concrete is an exothermic process. The heat of hydration generated induces temperature increases in the concrete, which will disappear in the long term by heat conduction in the concrete mass and thermal exchanges with the environment. The problem is of particularly interest for large concrete masses, as is the case of dams, because the time involved in the heat diffusion process grows with the square of the dimensions and a hotter dam interior implies the possibility of cracking the exposed surfaces of the dam. The Cuira dam, currently being built in Venezuela using roller compacted concrete, is a 134 m high, arch-gravity dam. In support of the design, different strategies were analysed, including various combinations of cooling of the water and the aggregate in order to achieve acceptable results. The calculations were conducted with Abaqus, taking into account all the necessary mechanical and thermal characteristics, as well as the relevant non-linearities. The analyses led to the conclusion that no cooling was required, even taking into account the stress state imposed by an early and rapid filling of the reservoir.

O presente trabalho visa interpretar as representações religiosas do fiel carismático pertencente ao grupo de oração da Renovação Carismática Católica de Maringá, Paraná, quando o mesmo se encontra diante de um processo de enfermidade. Tendo por base a concepção antropológica da saúde e a concepção antropológica interpretativa, o texto abre uma discussão entre essas áreas do conhecimento para interpretar a busca da religião, como sistema de significado e motivação para a recuperação de enfermidades na vida do fiel carismático. O processo saúde/doença, pela visão antropológica, é visto enquanto fenômeno social, preocupando-se com as pessoas, em diferentes culturas e grupos sociais, uma vez que saúde e doença não estão presentes, de forma igual, nas culturas. Compreendendo que a saúde é algo que ultrapassa os conceitos de ser considerada apenas quando um corpo não tem doença, a antropologia propõe um modelo de estudo que inter-relacione cultura/sociedade/natureza, que nos permita refletir, e não reproduzir, o modelo positivista da medicina que fragmenta o corpo, lançando a responsabilidade da doença sobre o enfermo, não considerando sua história, suas crenças, valores e o contexto social em que vive. O estudo revelou, pelas narrativas dos fiéis entrevistados: a busca do grupo de oração da RCC, como lugar de valorização, cuidado humano, e espaço de aproximação com o sagrado; a religião, como algo que lhe confere significado por meio de símbolos religiosos que atuam de forma terapêutica para a recuperação de sua enfermidade; e, por fim, a religião como recurso e sistema de motivação e ânimo no processo de enfrentamento do mal-estar do corpo e da mente, ou seja, a doença propriamente dita.(AU)

The physiological performance of two coccolithophore species,Emiliania huxleyi and Coccolithus braarudii, was investigated during long-term exposure to elevated pCO2 levels. Mono-specific cultures were grown over 152 (E. huxleyi) and 65 (C. braarudii) generations while pCO2 was gradually increased to maximum levels of 1150 ?atm (E. huxleyi) and 930 ?atm (C. braarudii) and kept constant thereafter. Rates of cell growth and cell quotas of particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) and total particulate nitrogen (TPN) were determined repeatedly throughout the incubation period. Increasing pCO2 caused a decrease in cell growth rate of 9% and 29% in E. huxleyi and C. braarudii, respectively. In both species cellular PIC:TPN and PIC:POC ratios decreased in response to rising pCO2, whereas no change was observed in the POC:TPN ratios of E. huxleyi and C. braarudii. These results are consistent with those obtained in shorter-term high CO2exposure experiments following abrupt pertubations of the seawater carbonate system and indicate that for the strains tested here a gradual CO2 increase does not alleviate CO2/pH sensitivity.

The effects of ocean acidification on the life-cycle stages of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi and their by light were examined. Calcifying diploid and noncalcifying haploid cells (Roscoff culture collection 1216 and 1217) were acclimated to present-day and elevated CO2 partial pressures (PCO2; 38.5 vs. 101.3 Pa, ., 380 vs. 1000 matm) under low and high light (50 vs. 300 mmol photons m-2 s-1). Growth rates as well as quotas and production rates of C and N were measured. Sources of inorganic C for biomass buildup were using a 14C disequilibrium assay. Photosynthetic O2 evolution was measured as a function of dissolved inorganic C and light by means of membrane-inlet mass spectrometry. The diploid stage responded to elevated PCO2 by shunting resources from the production of particulate inorganic C toward organic C yet keeping the production of total particulate C constant. As the effect of ocean acidification was stronger under low light, the diploid stage might be less affected by increased acidity when energy availability is high. The haploid stage maintained elemental composition and production rates under elevated PCO2. Although both life-cycle stages involve different ways of dealing with elevated PCO2, the responses were generally modulated by energy availability, being typically most pronounced under low light. Additionally, PCO2 responses resembled those induced by high irradiances, indicating that ocean acidification affects the interplay between energy-generating processes (photosynthetic light reactions) and processes competing for energy (biomass buildup and calcification). A conceptual model is put forward explaining why the magnitude of single responses is determined by energy availability.

O objetivo deste estudo foi validar e confirmar a reprodutibilidade de uma escala de silhueta para adolescentes. Para tanto, pesquisou-se 386 jovens de uma Escola Particular de Ensino. Desenvolveram-se análises de validação de construto e reprodutibilidade. O instrumento foi capaz de discriminar os quatro grupos segundo estado nutricional (α2=30,5, p<0,001; α2=19,3, p<0,001), correlacionou-se com as três medidas (IMC, RCQ e CC) pesquisadas (r=-0,61, p<0,001, r=-0,49, p<0,001, r=-0,54, p<0,001; r=-0,52, p<0,001, r=-0,23, p=0,001, r=-0,42, p<0,001) e confirmou a reprodutibilidade por meio da correlação intra-classe (r icc=0,86, p<0,001; r icc=0,80, p<0,001) para meninos e meninas, respectivamente. Na comparação das médias dos escores da escala (teste-reteste) confirmou-se a reprodutibilidade somente para o grupo dos meninos (p=0,86). O instrumento apresentou boa compreensão verbal e bom tempo de conclusão. Conclui-se que a escala de silhueta demonstrou bons resultados nas análises de validação e de reprodutibilidade.

Over two-thirds of renal masses noted incidentally on abdominal CT scans performed for nonurological indications are most likely renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The prognosis in these instances is often quite favorable, as early diagnosis offers the best hope of a complete cure. We report the identification of a RCC incidentally at endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) while an earlier CT scan of abdomen was negative. The mass was biopsied resulting in a histological confirmation of RCC and successful surgical resection.

The development of cancer is a complex, multistage process during which a normal cell undergoes genetic changes that result in phenotypic alterations and in the acquisition of the ability to invade other sites. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy was used to estimate the contents of Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Pb, and Zn in healthy kidney and renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and significant differences were found for all elements. Along with the progression of the malignant disease, a progressive decrease of Cd and K was observed. In fact, for Cd, the concentration in stage T4 was 263.9 times lower than in stage T1, and for K, the concentration in stage T4 was 1.73 times lower than in stage T1. Progressive accumulation was detected for P, Pb, and Zn in stage T4. For P, the concentration in stage T4 was 11.1 times higher than in stage T1; for Pb, the concentration in stage T4 was 232.7 times higher than in T1; and for Zn, the concentration in T4 was 8.452 times higher than in T1. This study highlights the marked differences in the concentrations of selected trace metals in different malignant tumor stages. These findings indicate that some trace metals may play important roles in the pathogenesis of RCC.

A procedure for partial digestion of bovine tissue is proposed using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microvessels inside a baby-bottle sterilizer under microwave radiation for multi-element determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Samples were directly weighed in laboratory-made polytetrafluoroethylene vessels. Nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide were added to the uncovered vessels, which were positioned inside the baby-bottle sterilizer, containing 500 mL of water. The hydrogen peroxide volume was fixed at 100 mu L The system was placed in a domestic microwave oven and partial digestion was carried out for the determination of Ca, Cu, Fe. Mg, Mn and Zn by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The single-vessel approach was used in the entire procedure, to minimize contamination in trace analysis. Better recoveries and lower residual carbon content (RCC) levels were obtained under the conditions established through a 2(4-1) fractional factorial design: 650 W microwave power, 7 min digestion time, 50 mu L nitric acid and 50 mg sample mass. The digestion efficiency was ascertained according to the residual carbon content determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Durante las últimas tres décadas el interés y diversidad en el uso de canales escalonados han aumentado debido al desarrollo de nuevas técnicas y materiales que permiten su construcción de manera rápida y económica (Concreto compactado con rodillo CCR, Gaviones, etc.). Actualmente, los canales escalonados se usan como vertedores y/o canales para peces en presas y diques, como disipadores de energía en canales y ríos, o como aireadores en plantas de tratamiento y torrentes contaminados. Diversos investigadores han estudiado el flujo en vertedores escalonados, enfocándose en estructuras de gran pendiente ( 45o) por lo que a la fecha, el comportamiento del flujo sobre vertedores con pendientes moderadas ( 15 a 30o) no ha sido totalmente comprendido. El presente artículo comprende un estudio experimental de las propiedades físicas del flujo aire-agua sobre canales escalonados con pendientes moderadas, típicas en presas de materiales sueltos. Un extenso rango de gastos en condiciones de flujo rasante se investigó en dos modelos experimentales a gran escala (Le = 3 a 6): Un canal con pendiente 3.5H:1V ( 16o) y dos alturas de escalón distintas (h = 0.1 y 0.05 m) y un canal con pendiente 2.5H:1V ( 22o) y una altura de escalón de h = 0.1 m. Los resultados incluyen un análisis detallado de las propiedades del flujo en vertedores escalonados con pendientes moderadas y un nuevo criterio de diseño hidráulico, el cual está basado en los resultados experimentales obtenidos. English abstract: Stepped chutes have been used as hydraulic structures since antiquity, they can be found acting as spillways and fish ladders in dams and weirs, as energy dissipators in artificial channels, gutters and rivers, and as aeration enhancers in water treatment plants and polluted streams. In recent years, new construction techniques and materials (Roller Compacted Concrete RCC, rip-rap gabions, etc.) together with the development of the abovementioned new applications have allowed cheaper construction methods, increasing the interest in stepped chute design. During the last three decades, research in stepped spillways has been very active. However, studies prior to 1993 neglected the effect of free-surface aeration. A number of studies have focused since on steep stepped chutes ( 45o) but the hydraulic performance of moderate-slope stepped channels is not yet totally understood. This study details an experimental investigation of physical air-water flow properties down moderate slope stepped spillways conducted in two laboratory models: the first model was a 3.15 m long stepped chute with a 15.9o slope comprising two interchangeable step heights (h = 0.1 m and h = 0.05 m); the second model was a 3.3 m long, stepped channel with a 21.8o slope (h = 0.1 m). A broad range of discharges within transition and skimming flow regimes was investigated. Measurements were conducted using a double tip conductivity probe. The study provides new, original insights into air-water stepped chute flows not foreseen in prior studies and presents a new design criterion for chutes with moderate slopes based on the experimental results.

Background Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) is one of the most treatment-resistant malignancies. Despite all new therapeutic advances, almost all patients develop resistance to treatment and cure is rarely seen. In the present study, we evaluated the antitumor effect of a bicistronic retrovirus vector encoding both endostatin (ES) and interleukin (IL)-2 using an orthotopic metastatic RCC mouse model. Methods Balb/C-bearing Renca cells were treated with NIH/3T3-LendIRES-IL-2-SN cells. In the survival studies, mice were monitored daily until they died. At the end of the in vivo experiment, serum levels of IL-2 and ES were measured, the lung was weighed, and the number of metastatic nodules, nodule area, tumor vessels and proliferation of tumor-infiltrating Renca cells were determined. Results Inoculation of NIH/3T3-LendIRES-IL-2-SN cells resulted in an increase in ES and IL-2 levels in the treated group (p < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in lung wet weight, lung nodule area and tumor vessels in the treated group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The proliferation of Renca cells in the bicistronic-treated group was significantly reduced compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that the probability of survival was significantly higher for mice submitted to bicistronic therapy (log-rank test, p = 0.0016). Bicistronic therapy caused an increase in the infiltration of CD4, CD4 interferon (IFN)gamma-producing, CD8, CD8 IFN gamma-producing and natural killer (CD49b) cells.
