It is by now a banal observation that published collections of conference papers tend to add up to a whole that is considerably less than the sum of the parts. Nineteenth-Century Geographies, a book that grew out of an interdisciplinary conference held at Rice University in 1998 falls into this category. While assuring my readers that each individual contribution is independently worth a read is likewise a predictable cliché, it is in fact the case that every one of the 17 articles collected here—notwithstanding the rather convoluted Introduction—has much to offer the study, broadly speaking, of ‘cultural spaces’ of British and American imperialisms in the nineteenth century. . . . All of my complaints aside, this turns out to be a much more enjoyable book to read than to review, and I would recommend skimming and dipping at length. I cannot quite imagine when a read-through of this book might be called for, except perhaps in graduate seminars on related topics.

Each year high numbers of employees voluntarily terminate their employment with restaurant organizations. The author reports the results of an exploratory determination of the reasons why a group of employees who left during a three-month period did terminate with the organizations. The subjects were examined as a total group and as subgroups identified by position. It was found that 47.8 percent of the time the manager is able to influence the factors which may lead to voluntary separation from the organization.

The unit manager in the hospitality organization is presented as a caretaker and a change agent in the organization, a caretaker in maintaining and nurturing the culture of the organization and a change agent in assisting the employees in the acceptance and demonstration of the desired image of the organization. The author reviews the traditional role of the manager and presents a reconceptualization of the position.

Photoacoustic spectrum of samarium phthalocyanine powder is recorded and compared with previously reported UV–vis absorption spectra of the same dissolved in different liquid and solid host media. The Davidov splitting of Q band is observed in the PA spectrum but the two bands are overlapped considerably and the shorter wavelength band is more intense and dominating one in the powder spectrum.

The overall focus of the thesis involves the synthesis and characterization of CdSe QDs overcoated with shell materials for various biological and chemical sensing applications. Second chapter deals with the synthesis and characterization of CdSe and CdSe/ZnS core shell QDs. The primary attention of this work is to develop a simple method based on photoinduced charge transfer to optimize the shell thickness. Synthesis of water soluble CdSe QDs, their cytotoxicity analysis and investigation of nonlinear optical properties form the subject of third chapter. Final chapter deals with development of QD based sensor systems for the selective detection of biologically and environmentally important analytes from aqueous media.
