A new 2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS)-radical scavenging and antiproliferative agents of pyrrolo1,2-a]quinoline derivatives have been synthesized. An efficient method for the synthesis of 14 novel diversified pyrrolo1,2-a]quinoline derivatives has been described using 4-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)quinoline and different phenacyl bromides in acetone and followed by reacting with different acetylenes in dimethylformamide/K2CO3. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds was determined by infrared, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The in vitro antioxidant activity revealed that among all the tested compounds 5n exhibited maximum scavenging activity with ABTS. Compound 5b has showed good antiproliferative activity as an inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase.

Two quinoline derivatives, 8-aminoquinoline (8-AQ) and 8-nitroquinoline (8-NQ), have been used as inhibitors to examine their corrosion protection effect on AA5052 aluminium alloy in 3% NaCl solution. The weight-loss and electrochemical measurement have indicated that 8-AQ and 8-NQ play as anodic inhibitor to retard the anodic electrochemical process. SEM/EDS analysis clearly shows that 8-AQ and 8-NQ form a protective film on the AA5052 alloy surface. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed the formation of strong hybridization between the p-orbital of reactive sites in the inhibitor molecules and the sp-orbital of the Al atom. 8-aminoquinoline and 8-nitroquinoline may be useful as effective corrosion inhibitors for aluminium alloys.

Three new series of 4-hydroxy-8-trifluoromethyl-quinoline derivatives were synthesized through multi step reactions. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral and elemental analyses. The structure of 5j was evidenced by X-ray crystallographic study. The newly synthesized title compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities including antimycobacterial activity. Amongst the tested compounds, 5b, 5e, 5h, 5j, 6c and 7c displayed promising antimicrobial activity. The mode of action of these active compounds was carried out by docking of receptor enoyl-ACP reductase with newly synthesized candidate ligands, 5b, 5e, 5h, 5j and 6c. (C) 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. A series of new PPV oligomers containing 8-substituted quinoline, 2,2'-(arylenedivinylene) bis-8-quinoline derivatives, were designed and synthesized via a Knoevenagel condensation reaction of quinaldine, 8-hydroxy-or 8-methoxy-quinaldine with aromatic dialdehydes. These PPV oligomers were characterized by H-1 and C-13-NMR, X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies. The X-ray diffraction investigation showed that there are intermolecular pi...pi interactions in the solid state in 1 and 3. The optical and photoluminescent properties study demonstrated that the emission color of the resulting materials varies from blue to yellow and is dependent on the substituents (pi-donor and pi-acceptor groups) on both sides of the conjugated molecules and the aromatic core in the middle of the conjugated backbones. The electroluminescent devices using compounds 1-4 as the emitters and electron-transporting layers were fabricated with the structure ITO/NPB/emitter/LiF/Al. The best device performance with the maximum brightness of 5530 cd m(-2) and the luminous efficiency of 2.4 cd A(-1) is achieved by using compound 4, with intramolecular charge transfer character, as the emitter; these values represent a more than 5-fold improvement in brightness and efficiency compared to compound 3 without methoxy groups on the phenyl rings.

Quinoline derivatives are known to possess a range of bioactive and medicinal activities, which have been exploited in the design of antibacterial, antifungal and antimalarial compounds. In this study, we report on the microbiological toxicity of a series of 1-alkylquinolinium bromides against a range of clinically relevant microorganisms, in both planktonic and sessile (biofilm) cultures. A comparison of antimicrobial activity against planktonic bacteria and established biofilms is presented. In general, 1-alkylquinolinium ionic liquids possess excellent, broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against microorganisms grown in both the planktonic and sessile, or biofilm, mode of growth. Importantly, these compounds are potent against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, as well as fungi, with a clear dependency on length of the alkyl substituent for activity, with compounds containing twelve and fourteen carbons in the alkyl group exhibiting highest antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

the thesis entitled “STUDIES ON DEVELOPING A FACILE ROUTE FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF HIGHLY SUBSTITUTED QUINOLINE AND INDOLE DERIVATIVES” portrays our attempt to revisit the mechanism of 1,3- dipolar additions with a view to establishing whether it follows a concerted pathway or a stepwise reaction sequence through the formation of a zwitterionic intermediate, which will definitely contribute to the better use of this technique. Furthermore, we propose to develop novel routes for the synthesis of quinoline and indole derivatives with predefined substitution pattern. The thesis is devided into four chapters

FT-IR spectrum of quinoline-2-carbaldehyde benzoyl hydrazone (HQb H2O) was recorded and analyzed. The synthesis and crystal structure data are also described. The vibrational wavenumbers were examined theoretically using the Gaussian03 package of programs using HF/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/6-31G(d) levels of theory. The data obtained from vibrational wavenumber calculations are used to assign vibrational bands obtained in infrared spectroscopy of the studied molecule. The first hyperpolarizability, infrared intensities and Raman activities are reported. The calculated first hyperpolarizability is comparable with the reported values of similar derivatives and is an attractive object for future studies of non-linear optics. The geometrical parameters of the title compound obtained from XRD studies are in agreement with the calculated values. The changes in the CAN bond lengths suggest an extended p-electron delocalization over quinoline and hydrazone moieties which is responsible for the non-linearity of the molecule

The fabrication of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of synthetic polymers allows the control of molecular architecture in order to optimize physical properties. In this paper, the surface chemistry of a quinoline-fluorene based copolymer spread on the air-water interface is investigated. Surface pressure-area isotherms as well as Polarization-Modulation Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) were employed to characterize the films, which could be transferred to solid supports by the LB technique. Atomic force microscopy as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies have shown a regular deposition of the polymers, and the luminescence properties could be controlled with the number of layers deposited on the solid support. As a result, the photoluminescence of the LB films was considerably higher than that observed for the spin coated film, and the maximum emission peak was shifted to higher energies, which is attributed to the molecular-level interactions within the layer-ordered structure of the LB film. The luminescence response would possibly be tuned to approach the highest level, which allows the films to be employed in future applications in efficient optical devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Trifluoroacetic acid has been discovered to be a highly effective and efficient reagent for the tandem Claisen rearrangement and cyclisation reaction to yield 3-arylmethylene-3,4-dihydro-1H-quinolin-2-ones from compounds obtained from the SN2 reaction between anilines and acetyl derivatives of Baylis-Hillman adducts of acrylates in the presence of DABCO. In contrast similar compounds obtained from the acetyl derivatives of Baylis-Hillman adduct of acrylonitrile on treatment with trifluoroacetic acid directly furnish 3-arylmethyl-2-amino-quinoline via tandem Claisen rearrangement, cylisation and isomerisation.

An alternate approach to densely substituted quinolines from the products of SN2 nucleophilic substitution reaction between the acetyl derivatives of the Baylis-Hillman adducts obtained from 2-nitrobenzaldehydes and the carbonyl group containing carbon nucleophiles is described. Treatment of these compounds with SnCl2, trigger a tandem reaction wherein reduction of the nitro group is followed by a remarkably regioselective intramolecular cyclization and subsequent dehydrogenation to afford 4-(substituted vinyl)-quinolines.
