La mayoría de los ferrocarriles latinoamericanos fueron construidos por empresas privadas, muchas veces extranjeras. Luego, por una combinación de factores relacionados con la competencia carretera y el nacionalismo, casi todos llegaron a formar parte del sector gubernmanental, para el cual la administración de los ferrocarriles llegó a constituir un infortunio cada vez mayor, a raíz de los crecientes subsidios que consumieron, el papel progresivamente más reducido que cumplieron en las economías nacionales y una apreciación de que no corresponde a los gobiernos la gestión de actividades productivas. Por lo tanto, a partir de fines del decenio 1980, se inicia un proceso de desestatización ferroviaria, y los ferrocarriles se devuelven a las manos de empresas privadas, muchas veces extranjeras. En ese sentido, el viaje ferroviario latinoamericano, que comenzó hace más de 150 años, está regresando a su punto de partida.No se ha hecho todavía una evaluación de la reciente privatización ferroviaria latinoamericana. Si fuera hecha, probablemente se concluiría: (i) que ha sido bastante exitosa, y; (ii) que sus resultados podrían haber sido aun más positivos si se hubiera modificado algunos detalles de la manera en que se llevara a cabo. Uno de los problemas se relaciona con la no incorporación en los procesos de licitaciones de un reconocimiento de los beneficios por externalidades de los ferrocarriles, por su contribución a la reducción de los costos del mantenimiento de las carreteras y al daño medioambiental asociado con el transporte caminero. Otra materia no resuelta trata de la licitación de un ferrocarril en su totalidad, o de la infraestructura y los servicios de forma separada.La operación de los ferrocarriles está sujeta a la influencia de las economías de escala, que favorecen la integración de diferentes empresas ferroviarias. En el pasado, hubo vínculos a nivel de directorio entre ferrocarrileción de los ferrocarriles. Ahora que la época estatal también se retrocede hacia el pasado, se puede prever la formación de sistemas ferroviarios integrados, uno de los cuales podría extenderse desde Quijarro, en la frontera entre Bolivia y Brasil, hasta la surchilena ciudad de Puerto Montt.

Most railways in Latin America were built by private firms, often foreign owned. Over time, owing to a combination of nationalizations and competition from road transport, virtually all railways passed into government hands; the railroad industry became more and more of a white elephant for the Government because of the ever-increasing subsidies it swallowed up, its dwindling role in national economies, and a conviction that Governments should not be involved in productive activities. Consequently, the late 1980s saw the start of a trend towards denationalization of railways, with the latter being turned over to private, often foreign, interests. In this way, the railway industry in Latin America has come full circle in the space of 150 years. So far, there has not been any assessment of the recent privatization of railways in Latin America. However, the conclusion would probably be that: (i) privatization has on the whole been successful, and (ii) the results achieved would have been more positive still, had some things been done slightly differently. One problem is that the bidding process has failed to take into account the positive externalities associated with railways, such as the contribution they make to reducing road maintenance costs and environmental damage caused by road transport. Another unresolved issue is whether to put the entire railway system up for tender, or to invite separate bids for infrastructure and services. Economies of scale operate in the railway industry, favouring the existence of a number of rail companies. In the past, the railway companies of neighbouring countries such as Argentina and Paraguay, and Bolivia and Chile, enjoyed ties at director level, but these came to an end with the nationalization of railways. Now that the era of State involvement is itself drawing to a close, we can expect to see the formation of integrated railway systems, one of which might extend from Quijarro, on the border between Bolivia and Brazil, to Puerto Montt in the south of Chile.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides biodiversity context to all samples from the Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013), including various diversity indexes calculated for the sampling location using satellite and model climatologies (Darwin project, Physat) and results from the sequencing of Tara Oceans samples.

This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Plano topografico y geologico de la Republica de Chile levantado por orden del gobierno, baja la direccion de A. Pissis ; grabado por N. Desmadryl. Sheet 13. It was published by Ch. Chardon in 1873. Scale [ca. 1:250,000]. This layer is image 14 of 14 total images of the fourteen sheet source map. Covers a portion of Región de Los Lagos, Chile. Map in Spanish. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the 'World Mercator' projection. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as drainage, roads, railroads, cities and other human settlements, territorial boundaries, selected buildings and built-up areas, mines and mineral locations, geological features, and more. Relief shown by hachures and shading. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection and the Harvard University Library as part of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University project: Organizing Our World: Sponsored Exploration and Scientific Discovery in the Modern Age. The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set includes properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter from physical, optical and imaging sensors mounted on a vertical sampling system (Rosette) used during the 2009-2013 tara Oceans Expedition. It comprised 2 pairs of conductivity and temperature sensors (SEABIRD components), and a complete set of WEtLabs optical sensors, including chrorophyll and CDOM fluorometers, a 25 cm transmissiometer, and a one-wavelength backscatter meter. In addition, a SATLANTIC ISUS nitrate sensor and a Hydroptic Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) were mounted on the rosette. In the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013), a second oxygen sensor (SBE43) and a four frequency Aquascat acoustic profiler were added. The system was powered on specific Li-Ion batteries and data were self-recorded at 24HZ. Sensors have all been factory calibrated before, during and after the four year program. Oxygen was validated using climatologies (WOA09). Nitrate and Fluorescence data were adjusted with discrete measurements from Niskin bottles mounted on the Rosette, and optical darks were performed monthly on board. A total of 839 quality checked vertical profiles were made during the tara Oceans expedition 2009-2013.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) was a global survey of ocean ecosystems aboard the Sailing Vessel Tara. It carried out extensive measurements of evironmental conditions and collected plankton (viruses, bacteria, protists and metazoans) for later analysis using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set includes properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter that were measured from discrete water samples collected with Niskin bottles during the 2009-2013 Tara Oceans expedition. Properties include pigment concentrations from HPLC analysis (10 depths per vertical profile, 25 pigments per depth), the carbonate system (Surface and 400m; pH (total scale), CO2, pCO2, fCO2, HCO3, CO3, Total alkalinity, Total carbon, OmegaAragonite, OmegaCalcite, and dosage Flags), nutrients (10 depths per vertical profile; NO2, PO4, N02/NO3, SI, quality Flags), DOC, CDOM, and dissolved oxygen isotopes. The Service National d'Analyse des Paramètres Océaniques du CO2, at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, determined CT and AT potentiometrically. More than 200 vertical profiles of these properties were made across the world ocean. DOC, CDOM and dissolved oxygen isotopes are available only for the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013).

System maintenance (instrument cleaning, flushing) was done approximately once a week and in port between successive legs. All data were stamped with a GPS.
