While cochlear implants (CIs) usually provide high levels of speech recognition in quiet, speech recognition in noise remains challenging. To overcome these difficulties, it is important to understand how implanted listeners separate a target signal from interferers. Stream segregation has been studied extensively in both normal and electric hearing, as a function of place of stimulation. However, the effects of pulse rate, independent of place, on the perceptual grouping of sequential sounds in electric hearing have not yet been investigated. A rhythm detection task was used to measure stream segregation. The results of this study suggest that while CI listeners can segregate streams based on differences in pulse rate alone, the amount of stream segregation observed decreases as the base pulse rate increases. Further investigation of the perceptual dimensions encoded by the pulse rate and the effect of sequential presentation of different stimulation rates on perception could be beneficial for the future development of speech processing strategies for CIs.

The affective impact of music arises from a variety of factors, including intensity, tempo, rhythm, and tonal relationships. The emotional coloring evoked by intensity, tempo, and rhythm appears to arise from association with the characteristics of human behavior in the corresponding condition; however, how and why particular tonal relationships in music convey distinct emotional effects are not clear. The hypothesis examined here is that major and minor tone collections elicit different affective reactions because their spectra are similar to the spectra of voiced speech uttered in different emotional states. To evaluate this possibility the spectra of the intervals that distinguish major and minor music were compared to the spectra of voiced segments in excited and subdued speech using fundamental frequency and frequency ratios as measures. Consistent with the hypothesis, the spectra of major intervals are more similar to spectra found in excited speech, whereas the spectra of particular minor intervals are more similar to the spectra of subdued speech. These results suggest that the characteristic affective impact of major and minor tone collections arises from associations routinely made between particular musical intervals and voiced speech.

While the origins of consonance and dissonance in terms of acoustics, psychoacoustics and physiology have been debated for centuries, their plausible effects on movement synchronization have largely been ignored. The present study aims to address this by investigating whether, and if so how, consonant/dissonant pitch intervals affect the spatiotemporal properties of regular reciprocal aiming movements. We compared movements synchronized either to consonant or to dissonant sounds, and showed that they were differently influenced by the degree of consonance of the sound presented. Interestingly, the difference was present after the sound stimulus was removed. In this case, the performance measured after consonant sound exposure was found to be more stable and accurate, with a higher percentage of information/movement coupling (tau-coupling) and a higher degree of movement circularity when compared to performance measured after the exposure to dissonant sounds. We infer that the neural resonance representing consonant tones leads to finer perception/action coupling which in turn may help explain the prevailing preference for these types of tones.

This is a study of the opportunities currently provided by interactive science and technology centres for visitors' engagement in the field of acoustics. E-mails, requesting a description of exhibits on acoustics (sound and hearing) in use, were sent to members of staff of interactive science and technology centres around the world as well as to companies that design and sell exhibits. Eighty-seven descriptions of distinctive interactive exhibits were received and analysed. Results show that: there are few analogy-based exhibits concerning the more complex aspects of acoustics; narratives involving visitors' everyday lives, that might provide continuity between and beyond the situations presented by exhibits, are not generally provided; science is emphasised at the expense of technology; the risks, benefits and ethical implications of relevant technological artefacts are rarely mentioned; the majority of the exhibits are concerned with the fields of fundamental acoustics, hearing, and psychoacoustics. It is suggested that interactive science and technology centres need to rethink the design of exhibits about acoustics if their mission includes some appreciation of this important branch of science and technology.

Human auditory localisation reversals are explored using mixture distribution analysis techniques. This is validated for front/back reversals and subsequently shown to provide evidence for up/down reversals as distinct classes of mis-localisation. Torso-related localisation cues are identified and also shown to provide a source for resolving these reversals in some listeners.

Audio coding is used to compress digital audio signals, thereby reducing the amount of bits needed to transmit or to store an audio signal. This is useful when network bandwidth or storage capacity is very limited. Audio compression algorithms are based on an encoding and decoding process. In the encoding step, the uncompressed audio signal is transformed into a coded representation, thereby compressing the audio signal. Thereafter, the coded audio signal eventually needs to be restored (e.g. for playing back) through decoding of the coded audio signal. The decoder receives the bitstream and reconverts it into an uncompressed signal. ISO-MPEG is a standard for high-quality, low bit-rate video and audio coding. The audio part of the standard is composed by algorithms for high-quality low-bit-rate audio coding, i.e. algorithms that reduce the original bit-rate, while guaranteeing high quality of the audio signal. The audio coding algorithms consists of MPEG-1 (with three different layers), MPEG-2, MPEG-2 AAC, and MPEG-4. This work presents a study of the MPEG-4 AAC audio coding algorithm. Besides, it presents the implementation of the AAC algorithm on different platforms, and comparisons among implementations. The implementations are in C language, in Assembly of Intel Pentium, in C-language using DSP processor, and in HDL. Since each implementation has its own application niche, each one is valid as a final solution. Moreover, another purpose of this work is the comparison among these implementations, considering estimated costs, execution time, and advantages and disadvantages of each one.

ABSTRACT This project aims to get a detailed view of recording and reproducing systems and technologies used to 3D audio applications and virtual reality environments, analyzing the different alternatives available, their functioning, features, technical details and their different scopes of applications. As a starting point, will be studied the psychoacoustic theory and the localization of sound sources in space, basis for the 3D audio study. Will be studied both the spacialization of sound sources in real space as virtual spatialization of sound sources (simulation by information processing of localization of sound sources), in which involves some acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena like ITD (or the Interaural time difference), the ILD, (or the Interaural Level Difference) and spatial localization by another set of binaural mechanisms. After a general overview of the psychoacoustics theory and the sound spatialization, will be analyzed in detail existing methods of recording and reproducing for 3D audio. Specifically, during the project will analyze the characteristics of the stereo systems, characterized by sound positioning using two channels; the binaural systems, characterized by reconstructing sound fields by using the HRTF; the multichannel systems, detailing many of the existing alternatives and configurations; the Ambiophonics system, which is characterized by implementing crosstalk elimination techniques; the Ambiosonics system, and its various formats and encoding and decoding techniques; and the Wavefield Synthesis system, characterized by recreate soundscapes in large spaces.

ABSTRACT. This final project is about the ambiophonic recording and playback system, note that this system and the technology it uses is of public domain. Ambiophonics is based on an amalgam of recent research and to the well known and binaural psychoacoustic principles. These advances have expanded new frontiers with regard to the audio recording and playback, as well as to present the listener a sound field at the entrance of their ears as close as possible to the sound field that would the listener be exposed to at the time and place of the mucial interpretation, so we can say that ambiophonics reconstructs a binaural sound field . This system has been developed, in a fairly satisfactory way, thanks to all the studies and previous texts on psychoacoustics and human listening mechanism. Another factor by which it is possible and affordable, both the development and the enjoyment of this technology, is the fact that in our days is inexpensive to usres to own computers that are powerful and fast enough to perform the signal processing that is required in a short time. The developers of this technology have published several documents and downloadable files on the network with applications for ambiophonics system implementation for free. Ambiophonics is based on a combination of factors ignored or underestimated psychoacousticly and what is already known about the acoustic properties of rooms, including rooms where musical performances take place (auditoriums, theaters, concert halls...), and listening rooms (concet halls, studios controls...). In the practical part of the project will be making a series of musical recordings using both traditional stereo recording techniques and recording techiniques compatible with ambiophonics in order to describe and compare both recording techniques. It will also examine to what extent is subjectively favorable for the listener the fact of considering the playback system properties of ambiophonics during the recording stage. This comparison will give us an idea of how far can we get, in terms of sense of reality to the listener, keeping in mind during the recording process the effects introduced by the response of the ear of the listener, which is unique, and that the subsequently interaural crosstalk will be canceled by a digital signal processing.

ABSTRACT The interest in the study of the problem of noise in schools and its impact on students at university level is a topic that has not been properly studied. Unfortunately, there are no specific regulations for determining preventive parameters or noise assessment procedures in university facilities. Due to the importance of the effects that noise has on health and on the quality of life of university students, and consequently on academic performance; is very important to develop mechanisms to evaluate and design solutions that help ensure an improvement in the quality of life of the student population. This thesis has presented an extensive work, which includes the study of the state of the art on the problem of noise in the sound environments to which university students are exposed every day, and the effects on students mainly on attention aspects. On one hand, a general study of the common noise environments of life of university students was carried out, where a methodological proposal is included and that helps in the correct characterization of the sound environments in which university students grow. This proposal includes the assessment of noise exposure, noise dose and a recording of the characteristic sound levels during their daily activities in and out spaces dedicated to their education. Also, a survey was conducted to know the perception that students have on noise conditions in university environments. Also, a method for evaluation of the noise annoyance is proposed, this is through the correlation of two known methods of evaluation. The first method is based on psychoacoustic parameters that allow the evaluation of the sound quality. These parameters were related, obtaining as a result the parameter known as psychoacoustics annoyance. The second method is based on a questionnaire in conjunction with listening tests in specific sound environments. Derived from the correlation of these two methods, a series of indicators of noise annoyance are proposed, which entails the design of a noise annoyance indicator. Furthermore, the effects of this pollutant on psychological health and therefore in the intellectual development of students has been shown. First, an evaluation of attention and memory using standardized psychometric tests were performed and others designed for this particular study. Because it has been evidenced that the use of these psychometric tests are not very reliable, we sought to obtain another objective and reliable data to show the relationship between the negative influence of background noise on basic cognitive processes such as attention and memory. This was achieved by carrying out a study of the brain activity. To carry out this evaluation the electroencephalogram (EEG) was used as the main tool, focusing on the changes produced with and without exposure to background noise, specifically in the frequency bands related to basic cognitive processes such as attention and are memory. In this case the band theta (4-7 Hz) and beta band (13-30 Hz) were studied. The purpose of this thesis is to establish the bases for future studies that allow go deep in the study of the sound conditions in school environments, and enable the design of strategies and measures against noise and the correct evaluation of the effects of noise on aspects for improving the psychological quality of life and academic performance of students.
