This paper examines how the introduction and use of a new information system affects and is affected by the values of a diverse professional workforce. It uses the example of lecture capture systems in a university. Its contribution is to combine two concepts taken from actor-network theory, namely accumulation and inscription, and combine them with an integrated framework of diversity management. A model is developed of accumulation cycles in lecture capture usage, involving multiple interacting actants, including the broader environment, management commitment to diversity, work group characteristics, individual practices and the affordances of technology. Using this model, alternative future inscriptions can be identified - an optimal one, which enhances professional values, as a result of a virtuous accumulation cycle, or a sub-optimal one, as a result of a vicious cycle. It identifies diversity management as an important influence on how professional values are enhanced, modified or destroyed.

The UK Professional Standards Framework (UK PSF) for teaching and supporting learning, launched in February 2006, is a flexible framework which uses a descriptor-based approach to professional standards. There are three standard descriptors each of which is applicable to a number of staff roles and to different career stages of those engaged in teaching and supporting learning. The standard descriptors are underpinned by areas of professional activity, core knowledge and professional values. The framework provides a reference point for institutions and individuals as well as supporting ongoing development within any one standard descriptor.

Although rational models of formal planning have been seriously criticized by strategy literature, they not only remain a widely used organizational practice in private firms, but they have increasingly been entering public, professional organizations too, as part of public sector managerial reforms. This research addresses this apparent paradox, exploring the meaning of formal planning in public sector professional work. Curiously, this is an issue that remains under-investigated in the literature: the long debate on formal planning in strategy research devoted scant attention to its diffusion in the public sector, and public sector studies have scrutinized the introduction of other management tools in professional work, but very limitedly formal planning itself. In fact, little is known on the actual meaning of formal planning in public, professional services. This research is based upon a case of adoption of formal planning tools in a public hospital. Embracing a discourse analytical lens, it examines which formal planning discourse entered professional work, to what extent, and how professionals interpret it and engage with it in their practice. The analysis uncovers dynamics of social construction of meaning where, eventually, a formal planning discourse both shapes and is shaped by professional practice. In particular, it is found that formal planning rationality largely penetrated professional work, but not to the detriment of professional values. Morevover, formal planning ‘fails’ as a tool for rational decision making, but it takes up a knowledge work and a social value in professional work, as a tool for explicitation of action courses and for dialogue between otherwise more disconnected parts of the organization.

INTRODUCTION: The shortage of nurses willing to work in rural Australian healthcare settings continues to worsen. Australian rural areas have a lower retention rate of nurses than metropolitan counterparts, with more remote communities experiencing an even higher turnover of nursing staff. When retention rates are lower, patient outcomes are known to be poorer. This article reports a study that sought to explore the reasons why registered nurses resign from rural hospitals in the state of New South Wales, Australia. METHODS: Using grounded theory methods, this study explored the reasons why registered nurses resigned from New South Wales rural hospitals. Data were collected from 12 participants using semi-structured interviews; each participant was a registered nurse who had resigned from a rural hospital. Nurses who had resigned due to retirement, relocation or maternity leave were excluded. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and imported into NVivo software. The constant comparative method of data collection and analysis was followed until a core category emerged. RESULTS: Nurses resigned from rural hospitals when their personal value of how nursing should occur conflicted with the hospital's organisational values driving the practice of nursing. These conflicting values led to a change in the degree of value alignment between the nurse and hospital. The degree of value alignment occurred in three dynamic stages that nurses moved through prior to resigning. The first stage, sharing values, was a time when a nurse and a hospital shared similar values. The second stage was conceding values where, due to perceived changes in a hospital's values, a nurse felt that patient care became compromised and this led to a divergence of values. The final stage was resigning, a stage where a nurse 'gave up' as they felt that their professional integrity was severely compromised. The findings revealed that when a nurse and organisational values were not aligned, conflict was created for a nurse about how they could perform nursing that aligned with their internalised professional values and integrity. Resignation occurred when nurses were unable to realign their personal values to changed organisational values - the organisational values changed due to rural area health service restructures, centralisation of budgets and resources, cumbersome hierarchies and management structures that inhibited communication and decision making, out-dated and ineffective operating systems, insufficient and inexperienced staff, bullying, and a lack of connectedness and shared vision. CONCLUSIONS: To fully comprehend rural nurse resignations, this study identified three stages that nurses move through prior to resignation. Effective retention strategies for the nursing workforce should address contributors to a decrease in value alignment and work towards encouraging the coalescence of nurses' and hospitals' values. It is imperative that strategies enable nurses to provide high quality patient care and promote a sense of connectedness and a shared vision between nurse and hospital. Senior managers need to have clear ways to articulate and imbue organisational values and be explicit in how these values accommodate nurses' values. Ward-level nurse managers have a significant responsibility to ensure that a hospital's values (both explicit and implicit) are incorporated into ward culture.

O Núcleo de Apoio Psicopedagógico ao Residente (NAPPRE) em parceria com a Coordenadoria de Desenvolvimento Acadêmico (CDA) do Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto (HUPE) da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), desenvolve desde 2010 o Curso de Formação Pedagógica para a Prática da Preceptoria (CFPPP) curso de extensão na modalidade aperfeiçoamento, tendo como eixos estruturantes cuidado, educação e gestão. Sustentado nos princípios e diretrizes do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) e orientado pelas Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais de Graduação em Saúde (DCNs), o curso apresenta-se como uma estratégia de Educação Permanente em Saúde (EPS) desta instituição utilizando, tanto nas atividades presenciais como na educação à distância, metodologias ativas para o desenvolvimento da competência pedagógica do preceptor. O projeto político pedagógico do curso valoriza a integração dos profissionais de diferentes categorias para o trabalho em equipe. O alcance dos objetivos educacionais e a construção de projetos de intervenção a serem desenvolvidos nas instituições de origem durante o curso exige interação constante dos participantes e desenvolvimento de espaços colaborativos facilitados por estratégias mistas de educação em atividades presenciais e à distância. Considerando que, aproximadamente, 57% da carga horária do curso corresponde à atividades no ambiente virtual de aprendizagem é fundamental compreender a relevância e funcionalidade deste modelo pedagógico para promover a aprendizagem e induzir práticas colaborativas interdisciplinares compreendidas como um caminho para o desenvolvimento da capacidade criativa, da solidariedade e da inteligência coletiva favorecendo a autonomia crescente, individual e coletiva, a autoria e a produção de cuidado e educação. Estes são elementos constitutivos de práticas educacionais coerentes com as necessidades de formação dos profissionais para qualificar o cuidado em saúde no nosso País. Este projeto de pesquisa tem como objetivo principal avaliar como a Educação à Distância (EaD) favorece a construção de ambientes colaborativos na formação pedagógica de preceptores. Trata-se de um estudo de caso único, retrospectivo, com duas unidades de análise, explanatório, intrínseco e educacional. São integrantes dessa pesquisa, como participantes, todos os preceptores da 1 e 2 turmas (anos 2010 e 2011 respectivamente). O planejamento educacional do curso foi contextualizado considerando as competências pedagógicas que são objetivos de aprendizagem. Foram analisados documentos produzidos de forma individual e coletiva durante as etapas do curso. Os dados quantitativos foram analisados através de estatística descritiva e a análise dos dados coletados no material documental foi por análise de conteúdo segundo as proposições de Bardin com identificação de núcleos e/ou validação destes núcleos através das nuvens de palavras construídas através do wordle.

This article examines the work and roles of HR managers in the Irish recession. It tests the validity of three competing views about the future of HR: that the profession needs to become a business partner; that it is knee-deep in a legitimacy crisis; and that it is fragmenting by being unable to cope with the complexity of modern organizational life. Three key findings emerge from the research. First, HR managers have gained greater influence in business decision-making, but much of this influence arises from short-run retrenchment measures. Second, many HR managers remain committed to long established professional values and ideas of good practice. Third, modern HR managers are developing a professional identity that allows them to perform multiple, competing roles. These findings challenge existing arguments about the effects of the current recession. They also speak to ongoing debates about changing HR roles by showing how HR managers remain adept at making pragmatic adaptations to secure their role in organizational life. © The Author(s) 2012.

The teaching and cultivation of professionalism is an integral part of medical education as professionalism is central to maintaining the public’s trust in the medical profession. Traditionally professional values would have been acquired through an informal process of socialisation and observation of role models. Recently, however, medical educators have accepted the responsibility to explicitly teach and effectively evaluate professionalism. A comprehensive working definition of the term professionalism and a universally agreed list of the constituent elements of professionalism are currently debated. The School of Medicine and Dentistry of The Queen’s University of Belfast uses an approach of self-directed learning for teaching anatomy, and students are given the opportunity to learn anatomy from human dissection. Self-directed learning teams have been found to be underutilised as educational strategies and presented an opportunity to utilise the first year dissection room teaching environment to nurture the development of the attributes of professionalism. An educational strategy based on role-playing was developed to engage all students around the dissection table. Students received comprehensive background reviews on professionalism, its attributes and the identification of such attributes in the context of the dissection room. Roles, with specific duties attached, were allocated to each team member. Circulating academic staff members directly observed student participation and gave formative feedback. Students were given the opportunity to reflect on their ability to identify the attributes and reflect on their own and their peer’s ability to develop and practise these attributes. This strategy indicated that small group learning teams in the dissection room utilise widely accepted principles of adult learning and offer an opportunity to create learning activities that will instil in students the knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviours that characterise medical professionalism. Anatomy faculty have a responsibility to nurture and exemplify professionalism and play a significant role in the early promotion and inculcation of professionalism. It remains imperative not only to assess this strategy but also to create opportunities for critical reflection and evaluation within the strategy. La réflexion sur l’intégration au travail des nouvelles enseignantes touche de plus en plus la communauté des chercheurs en éducation. Avec la valorisation de la pratique réflexive, l’enseignante se voit plus que par le passé autorisé à exercer une grande liberté d’action dans son travail, ainsi qu’une grande autonomie en ce qui à trait à l’exécution de sa tâche. Cette liberté peut être lourde à porter, surtout lorsqu’on entre dans le métier. Aussi, pour soutenir cette liberté et la diriger, la référence aux valeurs demeure fondamentale. Dans le présent mémoire, nous tentons d’en savoir plus sur les valeurs qui animent ces nouvelles venues, et comment celles-ci les aident à vivre leur intégration et à concevoir leur place dans le métier. La cueillette des données effectuée à partir de leurs réflexions, souvent profondes, sur les valeurs personnelles, les valeurs au travail et le rapport au métier, permet une analyse du discours basée sur le ressenti et l’expérience. C’est en puisant dans les thèses de la modernité et de la postmodernité, toutes deux parlantes quant à l’époque actuelle, que nous tentons de mieux cerner et induire les valeurs propres aux enseignantes ayant participé à notre étude phénoménologique de type exploratoire. Grâce à l’analyse de contenu, nous sommes à même de constater que malgré une ligne de partage présente entre certaines valeurs dites modernes et postmodernes, il n’en demeure pas moins qu’une tendance se dessine : nos nouvelles enseignantes désirent être fidèles d’abord et avant tout à elles-mêmes, même si cela implique l’abandon du métier qu’elles envisagent toutes comme une possibilité, sans exception. Cela en dit long sur leurs priorités et leurs valeurs au travail. Il est clair qu’elles travaillent de manière à se sentir authentiques, toujours avec le souci de savoir s’adapter aux nouvelles situations. Cependant, même si certaines d’entre elles trouvent plus ardu de s’adapter à une demande en matière de flexibilité professionnelle à la hausse, il n’en demeure pas moins que la flexibilité au travail est un élément désormais bien intégré à l’habitus professionnel des enseignantes pratiquant depuis dix ans et moins. Si postmodernes que ça nos nouvelles enseignantes? Oui.

La présente recherche vise à explorer et à décrire l’accommodation des valeurs professionnelles au sein du système de valeurs culturelles par les bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalais. Elle répond aux questions de recherche suivantes : (1) Quel est le système de valeurs culturelles dominant chez les bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalais ? (2) Comment les bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalais priorisent-ils leurs valeurs professionnelles ? (3) Comment les bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalais accommodent-ils leurs valeurs professionnelles à leurs valeurs culturelles ?cette recherche confirme la théorie de la prédominance dans les sociétés africaines en général d’un système de valeurs s’inscrivant dans l’axe « Continuité – Dépassement de soi » du modèle théorique de Schwartz (2006, 1992). Dans ce système, les valeurs dominantes sont des valeurs de types universalisme, bienveillance, tradition, conformité et sécurité. Ces valeurs favorisent l’intégration de l’individu au groupe, la solidarité et la sécurité familiale et le refus des actions de nature à porter atteinte à l’harmonie du groupe. Au plan pratique, la recherche démontre la nécessité de renforcer la socialisation professionnelle en intégrant l’éthique et les valeurs dans la formation des bibliothécaires universitaires sénégalais.

The auditor and the insitutionalization of distrust: the professionalization of external auditing in Sweden This paper addresses professionalization with a focus on trust, rather than on issues of power and competition. It contains a conceptual analysis of trust/confidence, as well as a case study of the professionalization of external auditing in Sweden. The conceptual analysis discusses the “time-binding” aspect of trust/confidence, and the significance of social control mechanisms related to “persons”, “roles”, “values” and “programs” for creating and sustaining trust/confidence. The case study focuses on the role of trust/confidence for the organization and professionalization of external auditing in Sweden, and in particular on the ways in which trust in auditors and auditing have been stabilized. The latter issue is dealt with through a discussion attempting to capture a historic displacement in three dimensions: from reliance on the auditor’spersonal reliability, to trust in the professional role; from trust in the individual discretion of certain persons to trust in the regulation of auditing as a standardized program; and finally, from trust in the values represented by individual auditors to trust in the institutionalized professional values.

Do you know what choices you would make if faced with an ethical dilemma? This fact-based case includes situations and issues that a real citizen considered when faced with the knowledge that his employer may have been overbilling the state of North Carolina for health care. Professionals, especially those in accounting and finance positions, are likely to face serious dilemmas in the course of their careers. These situations may require them to choose between honoring a confidentiality clause in an employment contract and acting according to ethical and professional values. This case provides facts gathered from an actual case in which an individual faced this particular challenge. By working through the case, students should develop an appreciation of the pressures and personal ethical challenges they are likely to face in the workplace. By engaging in discussion and role play, students will be more likely to recognize these issues when they occur, and will have already developed critical thinking skills to help them develop a plan of action.
