Amine Terminated Liquid Natural Rubber (ATNR) was used as a plasticiser in filled NR and NBR compounds replacing oil/DOP. The scorch time and cure time were found to be lowered when ATNR was used as the plasticiser. ATNR was found to improve the mechanical properties like tensile strength, tear strength and modulus of the vulcanizates . The ageing resistance of the vulcanizates containing ATNR was superior compared to the vulcanizates containing oil/DOP.

Carboxy Terminated Liquid Natural Rubber (CTNR) was prepared by photochemical reaction using maleic anhydride and masticated natural rubber (NR). The use of CTNR as an adhesive in bonding rubber to rubber and rubber to metal was studied. The peel strengths and lap shear strengths of the adherends which were bonded using CTNR were determined. The effect of using a tri isocyanate with CTNR in rubber to metal bonding was also studied. It is found that CTNR can effectively be used in bonding rubber to rubber and rubber to mild steel.

In the present study, the photochemical depolymerisation of NR in toluene, in presence of H202 and a homogenizing solvent (Methanol/Tetrahydro— furan) so as to get hydroxyl terminated liquid natural rubber (HTNR) has been carried out. The copolymeri— sation of this product with butane 1,4 diol and toluene 2,4 diisocyanate in presence of a catalyst, dibutyl tin dilaurate, to produce polyurethanes with HTNR soft segments is also reported. The preparation of block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) with varying molecular weights and HTNR are also discussed along with a detailed study on their thermal and mechanical properties

A novel method of blending natural rubber with polyvinylchloride in the latex stage was developed, Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and Amine terminated natural rubber (ATNR) were used as plasticisers, for improving the mechanical properties of these blends. Properties of the latex stage blends were compared with those of dry blends. Latex stage blends showed superior mechanical properties compared to the blends prepared in the dry state. The ageing resistance, oil resistance and processability were found to be improved by latex stage blending.

The aim of this work is to study the replacement of currently used thermoplastics by composites reinforced with vegetable fibers with several advantages, mainly better mechanical properties, low weight and competitive cost compared to its counterparts. Extrusion and injection molding processes were studied using polypropylene (PP) matrix. The raw materials used were sugar cane bagasse, elephant grass, wood, milk cartons and recycled polypropylene. The composites were tested for bending, tension, hardness and impact resistance, following ASTM standards. The results obtained were extremely positive since they proved that natural fibers as reinforcement can be an important alternative to replace talc and other fillers.

Superconductor mixed oxides were often used as catalysts at higher temperature in gas phase oxidations, and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of YBa2Cu3O7+/-x and Y2BaCuO5+/-x in the phenol hydroxylation at lower temperature with H2O2 as oxygen donor was studied, and found that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7+/-x, has no catalytic activity for phenol hydroxylation, but Y2BaCuO5+/-x does, even has better catalytic activity and stability than most previously reported ones. With the studies of catalysis of other simple metal oxides and perovskite-like mixed oxides, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and the experimental facts are explained clearly, and draw a conclusion that the perovskite-like mixed oxides with (AO)(ABO(3)) and (AO)2(ABO(3)) structure have better catalytic activity than the simple perovskite oxides with (ABO(3))(3) structure alone, and (AO) structure unit is the key for the mixed oxides to have the phenol hydroxylation activity. No pollution of this process is very important for its further industrial application.

Silicone elastomer systems have previously been shown to offer potential for the sustained release of protein therapeutics. However, the general requirement for the incorporation of large amounts of release enhancing solid excipients to achieve therapeutically effective release rates from these otherwise hydrophobic polymer systems can detrimentally affect the viscosity of the precure silicone elastomer mixture and its curing characteristics. The increase in viscosity necessitates the use of higher operating pressures in manufacture, resulting in higher shear stresses that are often detrimental to the structural integrity of the incorporated protein. The addition of liquid silicones increases the initial tan delta value and the tan delta values in the early stages of curing by increasing the liquid character (G '') of the silicone elastomer system and reducing its elastic character (G'), thereby reducing the shear stress placed on the formulation during manufacture and minimizing the potential for protein degradation. However, SEM analysis has demonstrated that if the liquid character of the silicone elastomer is too high, the formulation will be unable to fill the mold during manufacture. This study demonstrates that incorporation of liquid hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes into addition-cure silicone elastomer-covered rod formulations can both effectively lower the viscosity of the precured silicone elastomer and enhance the release rate of the model therapeutic protein bovine serum albumin. Polymers exhibit low electron density and they are radiolucent. Polymers can be made radiopaque by different techniques. We report a method for the preparation of radiopaque material from natural rubber (NR). NR in its latex form was iodinated. Iodinated natural rubber (INR) was characterized by using UV, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray images. INR was compounded at high and low temperatures and its physical properties were measured. The low temperature cured samples show good radiopacity and conductivity. The optical density of low temperature cured samples was measured.

Condoms are widely accepted as a contraceptive for family planning and population control. It is also accepted as the most effective barrier against sexually transmitted diseases, especially AIDS, the incurable disease. But presence of pinholes and low film strength of condoms make it unsuitable for the purpose. Quality improvement of condoms by reducing the pinhole formation and increasing the film strength is thus an essential requirement for population control as well as for preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Strict implementation of WHO specification of condoms further increases the rejection percentage. This causes higher rejection loss to condom manufacturers because the defects could be identified only at the final stage of processing. If the influence of various factors which cause these defects is known, manufacturers can take remedial measures to reduce the defectives so that rejection loss can be decreased and quality of condoms increased. In the present study, it was proposed to conduct experiments to improve the quality of condoms by reducing the pinhole rejection percentage and increasing the tensile properties, burst volume, and burst pressure. Ageing property improvement also was an important target among other parameters. Until a cure for AIDS is found, a high quality latex condom is the only effective device in the prevention of the spread of HIV, AIDS and STD's. Hence it is all the more necessary to have high quality condoms.

This work describes the preparation and characterization of composite materials obtained by the combination of natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) in different percentages, aiming to improve their mechanical properties, processability, and electrical conductivity, aiming future applications as transducer in pressure sensors. The composites NR/CB were characterized through optical microscopy (OM), DC conductivity, thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), thermogravimetry (TGA), and stress-strain test. The electrical conductivity varied between 10(-9) and 10 S m(-1), depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. Furthermore, a linear (and reversible) dependence of the conductivity on the applied pressure between 0 and 1.6 MPa was observed for the sample with containing 80 wt % of NR and 20% of CB. Hevea latex is a natural biological liquid of very complex composition .Besides rubber hydrocarbons,it contains many proteinous and resinous substances, carbohydrates, inorganic matter, water, and others. The Dry Rubber Content (DRC) of latex varies according to season, tapping system, weather, soil conditions ,clone, age of the tree etc. The true DRC of the latex must be determined to ensure fair prices for the latex during commercial exchange. The DRC of Hevea latex is a very familiar term to all in the rubber industry. It has been the basis for incentive payments to tappers who bring in more than the daily agreed poundage of latex. It is an important parameter for rubber and latex processing industries for automation and verious decesion making processes. This thesis embodies the efforts made by me to determine the DRC of rubber latex following different analytical tools such as MIR absorption, thermal analysis.dielectric spectroscopy and NIR reflectance. The rubber industry is still Looking for a compact instrument that is accurate economical, easy to use and environment friendly.I hope the results presented in this thesis will help to realise this goal in the near future.
