Redescription of Oncophora melanocephala (Rudolphi, 1819) Baudin-Laurencin, 1971 (Nematoda, Camallanidae)

Oncophora melanocephala, a camallanid nematode from the small intestine of Priacanthus arenatus Cuvier, 1829 is redescribed from the Coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil and this occurrence represents a new host record for the species

Revalidação de Cathorops arenatus e Cathorops agassizii (Siluriformes, Ariidae), bagres marinhos das regiões norte e nordeste da América do Sul

As espécies nominais das regiões norte e nordeste da América do Sul, reconhecidas na literatura como sinônimos júnior de Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) têm seu status específico revisto. Os tipos de Arius arenatus Valenciennes, 1840, Arius fissus Valenciennes, 1840, Tachisurus agassizii Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888 e Arius pleurops Boulenger, 1897 foram examinados. Cathorops arenatus e Cathorops agassizii são espécies válidas, Cathorops fissus é sinônimo júnior de Cathorops arenatus e Cathorops pleurops sinônimo júnior de Cathorops agassizii. Os caracteres morfométricos tradicionalmente usados em descrições e chaves de identificação para espécies da família Ariidae são redefinidos e novos caracteres são utilizados.

Review of the Genus Cathorops (Siluriformes: Ariidae) from the Caribbean and Atlantic South America, with Description of a New Species

The New World genus Cathorops in the family Ariidae (Sea Catfishes) includes species that inhabit estuarine and coastal waters as well as freshwaters, playing an important role in Neotropical coastal and estuarine fisheries. The relatively conserved external morphology coupled with the marked sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic variation makes it difficult to recognize and diagnose the species. One of the major problems concerns the nomenclatural and geographical limits, of C. spixii, described from tropical Brazil and often treated as the only coastal marine species in the genus from the Western Atlantic. Examination of types of nominal species as well as comprehensive collections of non-types from Caribbean and Atlantic South America, lead us to conclude that C. spixii is restricted to Brazil and that C. nuchalis is a valid species, ranging from Venezuela to Guyana. The nominal species Arius laticeps, Arius nigricans, and Arius variolosus are synonyms of C. nuchalis, C. spixii, and C. arenatus, respectively. We also describe a new species in the Cathorops mapale species group from Colombia and Venezuela.

Two new hemiurine species (Digenea : Hemiuridae) from Spratelloides robustus Ogilby (Clupeiformes : Clupeidae) off south-western Australia and records of Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) from Australian and New Caledonian waters

Two new species of hemiurine hemiurid are described from Spratelloides robustus off Woodman Point in southern Western Australia. Hemiurus lignator n. sp. differs from its congeners by a combination of similar-sized suckers, long sinus-sac, tandem testes, relatively elongate shape and unthickened seminal vesicle wall. Parahemiurus xylokopos n. sp. differs from its congeners in a combination of its squat form, its distinctly lobed vitellarium and the proximity of the gonads to the ventral sucker. P. merus (Linton, 1910) is reported from Acanthopagrus australis, Pomatomus saltatrix and Trachinotus coppingeri off northern New South Wales, Caranx sexfasciatus, Scorpis lineolata, Siganus nebulosus, Thunnus tonggol and T. coppingeri off southern Queensland, Cephalopholis boenak and Euthynnus affinis off Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef, P. saltatrix off southern Western Australia and Priacanthus hamrur off New Caledonia.
