Phylogenetic relationships of rock-wallabies, Petrogale (Marsupialia: Macropodidae) and their biogeographic history within Australia

The rock-wallaby genus Petrogale comprises a group of habitat-specialist macropodids endemic to Australia. Their restriction to rocky outcrops, with infrequent interpopulation dispersal, has been suggested as the cause of their recent and rapid diversification. Molecular phylogenetic relationships within and among species of Petrogale were analysed using mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1, cytochrome b. NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2) and nuclear (omega-globin intron, breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility gene) sequence data with representatives that encompassed the morphological and chromosomal variation within the genus, including for the first time both Petrogale concinna and Petrogale purpureicollis. Four distinct lineages were identified, (1) the brachyotis group, (2) Petrogale persephone, (3) Petrogale xanthopus and (4) the lateralis-penicillata group. Three of these lineages include taxa with the ancestral karyotype (2n = 22). Paraphyletic relationships within the brachyotis group indicate the need for a focused phylogeographic study. There was support for P. purpureicollis being reinstated as a full species and P. concinna being placed within Petrogale rather than in the monotypic genus Peradorcas. Bayesian analyses of divergence times suggest that episodes of diversification commenced in the late Miocene-Pliocene and continued throughout the Pleistocene. Ancestral state reconstructions suggest that Petrogale originated in a mesic environment and dispersed into more arid environments, events that correlate with the timing of radiations in other arid zone vertebrate taxa across Australia. RESUMO - Quando, finalmente, entendemos a importância dos cuidados de saúde primários, procuramos construí-los à maneira das antigas catedrais góticas dos velhos burgos medievais: desenhadas por poucos, construídas por alguns, frequentadas obrigatoriamente por todos os demais. Através de todo este esforço, aprendemos. Os cuidados de saúde primários acontecem todos os dias: quando as pessoas comuns aprendem ou fazem alguma coisa de útil à sua saúde e à dos que lhes estão próximos; sempre que comunicam com alguém habilitado a ouvi-los e apoiá-los sobre as suas dúvidas, medos, fantasias, angústias, preferências ou necessidades de saúde. Para assegurar o reforço dos cuidados de saúde primários necessitamos de conhecimentos renovados, «teorias de acção» mais elaboradas, alguma sabedoria e muita imaginação.

Au travers d'une étude parallèle de deux femmes esclaves - l'une figure historique, l'autre personnage de fiction - et de la façon dont elles ont été inscrites dans, et surtout hors du récit historique et littéraire américain, cet essai vise d'une part à interroger les biais et les limitations de l'historiographie traditionnelle américaine dans sa représentation de l'esclave, et d'autre part à évaluer le rôle de la littérature dans la critique et la « re-vision » du discours historique. Le roman de Gloria Naylor Mama Day (1988) offre ainsi un détour intéressant pour mettre en lumière les processus discursifs, épistémologiques et idéologiques qui ont permis et perpétué l'absence de femmes comme Sally Hemings, esclave et maîtresse supposée de Thomas Jefferson, dans l'Histoire américaine.Through a parallel discussion of two slave women - the first a historical figure, the second a fiction character - and of the way they have been inscribed in, and indeed out of, the historical and fictional narrative of America's past, this essay aims both to interrogate the biases and limitations of traditional American historiography in its representation of slaves and to evaluate the role of literature in the critique and "re-vision" of historical discourse. Gloria Naylor's novel Mama Day (1988) thus provides an interesting detour to cast light on the discursive, epistemological and ideological processes that have permitted and perpetuated the absence from American History of women like Sally Hemings, Thomas Jefferson's slave and supposed mistress.

Prey identification in nests of the potter wasp Hypodynerus andeus (Packard) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) using DNA barcodes

Prey identification in nests of the potter wasp Hypodynerus andeus (Packard) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) using DNA barcodes. Geometrid larvae are the only prey known for larvae of the Neotropical potter wasp Hypodynerus andeus (Packard, 1869) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Eumeninae) in the coastal valleys of the northern Chilean Atacama Desert. A fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 was amplified from geometrid larvae collected from cells of H. andeus in the Azapa Valley, Arica Province, and used to provide taxonomic identifications. Two species, Iridopsis hausmanni Vargas, 2007 and Macaria mirthae Vargas, Parra & Hausmann, 2005 were identified, while three others could be identified only at higher taxonomic levels, because the barcode reference library of geometrid moths is still incomplete for northern Chile.
