En el Taller Provincial de Educación Ambiental (octubre 1996), organizado por el Ministerio de Ambiente del Gobierno de Mendoza, financiado por BID y Secretaría de Recursos Naturales y Ambiente Humano, Presidencia de la Nación Argentina surge la idea, iniciativa del Dr. Thomas, de realizar un poster educativo ambiental de Mendoza, a ser distribuido entre todas las escuelas y niveles. Titulado Mendoza es tu naturaleza, se Tu Como El Cuyum es considerado herramienta para superar dificultades de docentes que enseñan temas ambientales. El objetivo es guiar al observador, adulto, docente o niño, hacia diferentes problemas ambientales del territorio provincial. Señalar costumbres perjudiciales como quemar hojas de árboles, malgastar agua potable, ensuciar acequias. También hacia temas como residuos, tránsito urbano, deshechos industriales, remediación minera, contaminación de aire y agua, deportes en conflicto con el ambiente, destrucción de flora y fauna nativa, sitios protegidos. Los costos de 40.000 ejemplares impresos en Alemania son asumidos por UFZ/Liepzig. Las tareas locales se realizaron entre Ministerio de Ambiente; diseñadores gráficos y CIFOT, para la posterior distribución en escuelas.

Communication security for wireless sensor networks (WSN) is a challenge due to the limited computation and energy resources available at nodes. We describe the design and implementation of a public-key (PK) platform based on a standard Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip that extends the capability of a standard node. The result facilitates message security services such as confidentiality, authenticity and integrity. We present results including computation time, energy consumption and cost.

We present the design and deployment results for PosNet - a large-scale, long-duration sensor network that gathers summary position and status information from mobile nodes. The mobile nodes have a fixed-sized memory buffer to which position data is added at a constant rate, and from which data is downloaded at a non-constant rate. We have developed a novel algorithm that performs online summarization of position data within the buffer, where the algorithm naturally accommodates data input and output rate mismatch, and also provides a delay-tolerant approach to data transport. The algorithm has been extensively tested in a large-scale long-duration cattle monitoring and control application.

This paper introduces an energy-efficient Rate Adaptive MAC (RA-MAC) protocol for long-lived Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Previous research shows that the dynamic and lossy nature of wireless communication is one of the major challenges to reliable data delivery in a WSN. RA-MAC achieves high link reliability in such situations by dynamically trading off radio bit rate for signal processing gain. This extra gain reduces the packet loss rate which results in lower energy expenditure by reducing the number of retransmissions. RA-MAC selects the optimal data rate based on channel conditions with the aim of minimizing energy consumption. We have implemented RA-MAC in TinyOS on an off-the-shelf sensor platform (TinyNode), and evaluated its performance by comparing RA-MAC with state-ofthe- art WSN MAC protocol (SCP-MAC) by experiments.

Virtual fencing has the potential to control grazing livestock. Understanding and refi ning the cues that can alter behaviour is an integral part of autonomous animal control. A series of tests have been completed to explore the relationship between temperament and control. Prior to exposure to virtual fencing control the animals were scored for temperament using fl ight speed and a sociability index using contact logging devices. The behavioural response of 30, Belmont Red steers were observed for behavioural changes when presented with cues prior to receiving an electrical stimulation. A control and four treatments designed to interrupt the animal’s movement down an alley were tested. The treatments consisted of sound plus electrical stimulation, vibration plus electrical stimulation, a visual cue plus electrical stimulation and electrical stimulation by itself. The treatments were randomly applied to each animal over fi ve consecutive trials. A control treatment in which no cues were applied was used to establish a basal behavioural pattern. A trial was considered completed after each animal had been retained behind the cue barrier for at least 60 sec. All cues and electrical stimulation were manually applied from a laptop located on a portable 3.5 m tower located immediately outside the alley. The electric stimulation consisted of 1.0 Kv of electricity. Electric stimulation, sound and vibration along with the Global Position System (GPS) hardware to autonomously record the animal’s path within the alley were recorded every second.

Background / context: The ALTC WIL Scoping Study identified a need to develop innovative assessment methods for work integrated learning (WIL) that encourage reflection and integration of theory and practice within the constraints that result from the level of engagement of workplace supervisors and the ability of academic supervisors to become involved in the workplace. Aims: The aim of this paper is to examine how poster presentations can be used to authentically assess student learning during WIL. Method / Approach: The paper uses a case study approach to evaluate the use of poster presentations for assessment in two internship units at the Queensland University of Technology. The first is a unit in the Faculty of Business where students majoring in advertising, marketing and public relations are placed in a variety of organisations. The second unit is a law unit where students complete placements in government legal offices. Results / Discussion: While poster presentations are commonly used for assessment in the sciences, they are an innovative approach to assessment in the humanities. This paper argues that posters are one way that universities can overcome the substantial challenges of assessing work integrated learning. The two units involved in the case study adopt different approaches to the poster assessment; the Business unit is non-graded and the poster assessment task requires students to reflect on their learning during the internship. The Law unit is graded and requires students to present on a research topic that relates to their internship. In both units the posters were presented during a poster showcase which was attended by students, workplace supervisors and members of faculty. The paper evaluates the benefits of poster presentations for students, workplace supervisors and faculty and proposes some criteria for poster assessment in WIL. Conclusions / Implications: The paper concludes that posters can effectively and authentically assess various learning outcomes in WIL in different disciplines while at the same time offering a means to engage workplace supervisors with academic staff and other students and supervisors participating in the unit. Posters have the ability to demonstrate reflection in learning and are an excellent demonstration of experiential learning and assessing authentically. We present some improved analytical results as part of the ongoing work on the analysis of Fugue-256 hash function, a second round candidate in the NIST’s SHA3 competition. First we improve Aumasson and Phans’ integral distinguisher on the 5.5 rounds of the final transformation of Fugue-256 to 16.5 rounds. Next we improve the designers’ meet-in-the-middle preimage attack on Fugue-256 from 2480 time and memory to 2416. Finally, we comment on possible methods to obtain free-start distinguishers and free-start collisions for Fugue-256.

This paper explores novel driving experiences that make use of gamification and augmented reality in the car. We discuss our design considerations, which are grounded in road safety psychology and video game design theory. We aim to address the tension between safe driving practices and player engagement. Specifically, we propose a holistic, iterative thinking process inspired by game design cognition and share our insights generated through the application of this process. We present preliminary game concepts that blend digital components with physical elements from the driving environment. We further highlight how this design process helped us to iteratively evolve these concepts towards being safer while maintaining fun. These insights and game design cognition itself will be useful to the AutomotiveUI community investigating similar novel driving experiences.

Computational grids with multiple batch systems (batch grids) can be powerful infrastructures for executing long-running multicomponent parallel applications. In this paper, we have constructed a middleware framework for executing such long-running applications spanning multiple submissions to the queues on multiple batch systems. We have used our framework for execution of a foremost long-running multi-component application for climate modeling, the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). Our framework coordinates the distribution, execution, migration and restart of the components of CCSM on the multiple queues where the component jobs of the different queues can have different queue waiting and startup times.

[Es] El autoconcepto físico juega un papel decisivo en el bienestar personal y la prevención de trastornos y dificultades de conducta. De ahí la importancia de ayudar educativamente al desarrollo de adecuadas autopercepciones físicas. En este artículo se ofrece un análisis comparativo de dos formatos (papel y on line) de un mismo programa de intervención educativa para la mejora del autoconcepto implementado con estudiantes universitarios. Los datos obtenidos en la medida del autoconcepto físico no confirman una mejora significativa, lo cual no necesariamente desacredita el programa ya que puede atribuirse en parte a determinadas limitaciones observadas en la aplicación del mismo. Por otra parte, la valoración del programa que realizan los sujetos participantes es notablemente positiva, en particular, la de quienes han utilizado la versión on line.

[Es] En este trabajo se parte de la hipótesis de que los propios contenidos televisivos son fuente de aprendizaje a través de las narraciones televisivas. En concreto, defendemos la idea de que es posible enseñar y aprender valores a través de dichas narraciones. Se sistematizan algunas de las investigaciones que han abordado la relación entre televisión y valores desde una triple dimensión: los propios contenidos; el medio en sí mismo y el lenguaje. Esta revisión nos permite defender que las condenas reiteradas a la televisión, responsabilizándola de la mayoría de los males que sufre la juventud, no pueden apoyarse en los estudios que la psicología ha realizado en las últimas décadas. Entendemos que el telespectador incorpora la información televisiva desde distintos contextos y que la enculturación no es unidireccional. Existe una interacción entre contextos de desarrollo y mensajes. Concretamente nos interesa analizar los valores implícitos y explícitos que subyacen a los contenidos televisivos. Para ello basándonos en el modelo elaborado por Schwartz y Bilsky hemos creado un cuestionario (Val-TV 01) con el fin de clasificar los valores e interpretar las conductas visualizadas en los textos televisivos y relacionarlos con los propios valores de los adolescentes.
