Due to the constantly increasing use of wireless networks in domestic, business and industrial environments, new challenges have emerged. The prototyping of new protocols in these environments is typically restricted to simulation environments, where there is the need of double implementation, one in the simulation environment where an initial proof of concept is performed and the other one in a real environment. Also, if real environments are used, it is not trivial to create a testbed for high density wireless networks given the need to use various real equipment as well as attenuators and power reducers to try to reduce the physical space required to create these laboratories. In this context, LVWNet (Linux Virtual Wireless Network) project was originally designed to create completely virtual testbeds for IEEE 802.11 networks on the Linux operating system. This paper aims to extend the current project LVWNet, adding to it the features like the ability to interact with real wireless hardware, provides a initial mobility ability using the positioning of the nodes in a space coordinates environment based on meters, with loss calculations due to attenuation in free space, enables some scalability increase by creating an own protocol that allows the communication between nodes without an intermediate host and dynamic registration of nodes, allowing new nodes to be inserted into in already in operation network

Link adaptation (LA) plays an important role in adapting an IEEE 802.11 network to wireless link conditions and maximizing its capacity. However, there is a lack of theoretic analysis of IEEE 802.11 LA algorithms. In this article, we propose a Markov chain model for an 802.11 LA algorithm (ONOE algorithm), aiming to identify the problems and finding the space of improvement for LA algorithms. We systematically model the impacts of frame corruption and collision on IEEE 802.11 network performance. The proposed analytic model was verified by computer simulations. With the analytic model, it can be observed that ONOE algorithm performance is highly dependent on the initial bit rate and parameter configurations. The algorithm may perform badly even under light channel congestion, and thus, ONOE algorithm parameters should be configured carefully to ensure a satisfactory system performance. Gegenstand der hier vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der Auswirkung der MAC-Zugriffsverfahren CSMA/CA auf das Transportschicht-Protokoll in WLAN-Netzen. Zum Erreichen des Ziels dieser Arbeit wurde es zuerst nachgewiesen, dass CSMA/CA zum TCP-Retransmission führen könnte. Dann die kumulative Verteilung der OWDs auf jedem Szena-rio analysiert. Am Ende wurde die kumulative Verteilung der Abstände zwischen den Spitzenwerten der OWD nach der Datenverarbeitung auf jedem Szenario analysiert.

Estudi realitzat a partir d’una estada al laboratori LSR (Logiciels, Systèmes, Réseaux) – IMAG a Grenoble, França, entre els mesos de setembre del 2005 i febrer del 2006. El grup de recerca Drakkar d’aquest laboratori va desenvolupar un nou mecanisme d’accés al medi per a xarxes d’àrea local sense fils (WLAN) anomenat Idle Sense. S’ha avaluat aquest mecanisme en entorns cel·lulars i s’ha comparat del seu comportament amb l’estàndard IEEE 802.11 DCF mitjançant la implementació en un simulador. En els entorns cel·lulars es troben condicions de transmissió molt allunyades de les ideals, i de les analitzades fins al moment, que consisteixen en escenaris formats per una única cel·la aïllada. Per aquest motiu, primer s’ha estudiat els mecanismes d’accés al medi d’Idle Sense en una cel·la i en condicions de transmissió adverses. Després, s’ha estudiat en entorns multicel·lulars, on les comunicacions entre estacions es veuen influenciades pel problema de solapament de cel·les i per les interferències provocades per les transmissions d’estacions d’altres cel·les. També s’ha comparat els resultats obtinguts amb el comportament d’IEEE 802.11 DCF i d’altres propostes de millora: Asymptotically Optimal Backoff (AOB) i Slow Decrease. Finalment, s’ha realitzat una modificació sobre Idle Sense, que s’ha anomenat Weighted Idle Sense, que resulta més adecuat per a treballar en xarxes d’àrea local sense fils en mode infraestructura.

Langattomat lähiverkot ovat yleistyneet ja monin paikoin niillä pyritään täysin korvaamaan perinteiset kaapeloidut verkot. Samalla verkoissa välitettävät palvelut monipuolistuvat. Etenkin interaktiivisten sisältöjen ja viiveriippuvaisten palvelujen välittämisessä korostuvat verkolle asettavat vaatimukset suorituskyvystä ja palveluntasosta. Radiotaajuuksilla tapahtuva tiedonsiirto on ongelmallista siirtomedian jaetun luonteen vuoksi. Käytettäessä ympärisäteileviä antenneja jokainen kantomatkan päässä oleva asema kuulee lähetyksen, vaikkei se olisi sille suunnattu. Tämä luo turvallisuusongelman, mutta lisäksi heikentää tehokkuutta, koska nykyisellä antenniteknologialla vain yksi asema kerrallaan voi lähettää häiriöttä kantoalueellaan. Täsmälähetykset yhden lähteen ja useiden kohteiden välillä luovat erillisiä siirtolinkkejä. Olisi luontevampaa luoda yksi lähetysvirta, johon useat vastaanottajat voivat kytkeytyä. Kaistan säästön vastapainona on tarve luoda ja ylläpitää näitä yhteyksiä. Käyttäjien liikkuvuuden ja siirtotien vaihtelevien ominaisuuksien vuoksi langattoman verkon rakenne ja rajat ovat epäselviä. Näihin haasteisiin on vastattava sekä protokolla- että sovellustasolla. Tässä tutkielmassa käydään ensin läpi IEEE 802.11 -standardin mukaisen langattoman verkon perusteet ja sen ominaisuuksiin liittyvät tyypilliset ongelmakohdat. Yleis- ja ryhmälähetyksiä tarkastellaan ensin perinteisessä IEEE 802.3 standardin mukaisessa langallisessa lähiverkossa ja selvitetään, miten vastaavat ominaisuudet toteutuvat IEEE 802.11 standardien mukaisissa langattomissa verkoissa. Käyttötapaustutkimuksissa keskitytään rajatussa ympäristössä tapahtuviin ryhmälähetyksiin. Erityisesti tutkitaan langattomien ryhmälähetysten käyttökelpoisuutta sekä langattoman ympäristön asettamia erityisvaatimuksia.

This thesis proposes the specification and performance analysis of a real-time communication mechanism for IEEE 802.11/11e standard. This approach is called Group Sequential Communication (GSC). The GSC has a better performance for dealing with small data packets when compared to the HCCA mechanism by adopting a decentralized medium access control using a publish/subscribe communication scheme. The main objective of the thesis is the HCCA overhead reduction of the Polling, ACK and QoS Null frames exchanged between the Hybrid Coordinator and the polled stations. The GSC eliminates the polling scheme used by HCCA scheduling algorithm by using a Virtual Token Passing procedure among members of the real-time group to whom a high-priority and sequential access to communication medium is granted. In order to improve the reliability of the mechanism proposed into a noisy channel, it is presented an error recovery scheme called second chance algorithm. This scheme is based on block acknowledgment strategy where there is a possibility of retransmitting when missing real-time messages. Thus, the GSC mechanism maintains the real-time traffic across many IEEE 802.11/11e devices, optimized bandwidth usage and minimal delay variation for data packets in the wireless network. For validation purpose of the communication scheme, the GSC and HCCA mechanisms have been implemented in network simulation software developed in C/C++ and their performance results were compared. The experiments show the efficiency of the GSC mechanism, especially in industrial communication scenarios.

The monitoring of patients performed in hospitals is usually done either in a manual or semiautomated way, where the members of the healthcare team must constantly visit the patients to ascertain the health condition in which they are. The adoption of this procedure, however, compromises the quality of the monitoring conducted since the shortage of physical and human resources in hospitals tends to overwhelm members of the healthcare team, preventing them from moving to patients with adequate frequency. Given this, many existing works in the literature specify alternatives aimed at improving this monitoring through the use of wireless networks. In these works, the network is only intended for data traffic generated by medical sensors and there is no possibility of it being allocated for the transmission of data from applications present in existing user stations in the hospital. However, in the case of hospital automation environments, this aspect is a negative point, considering that the data generated in such applications can be directly related to the patient monitoring conducted. Thus, this thesis defines Wi-Bio as a communication protocol aimed at the establishment of IEEE 802.11 networks for patient monitoring, capable of enabling the harmonious coexistence among the traffic generated by medical sensors and user stations. The formal specification and verification of Wi-Bio were made through the design and analysis of Petri net models. Its validation was performed through simulations with the Network Simulator 2 (NS2) tool. The simulations of NS2 were designed to portray a real patient monitoring environment corresponding to a floor of the nursing wards sector of the University Hospital Onofre Lopes (HUOL), located at Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Moreover, in order to verify the feasibility of Wi-Bio in terms of wireless networks standards prevailing in the market, the testing scenario was also simulated under a perspective in which the network elements used the HCCA access mechanism described in the IEEE 802.11e amendment. The results confirmed the validity of the designed Petri nets and showed that Wi-Bio, in addition to presenting a superior performance compared to HCCA on most items analyzed, was also able to promote efficient integration between the data generated by medical sensors and user applications on the same wireless network

Internet access by wireless networks has grown considerably in recent years. However, these networks are vulnerable to security problems, especially those related to denial of service attacks. Intrusion Detection Systems(IDS)are widely used to improve network security, but comparison among the several existing approaches is not a trivial task. This paper proposes building a datasetfor evaluating IDS in wireless environments. The data were captured in a real, operating network. We conducted tests using traditional IDS and achieved great results, which showed the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Wireless networks are widely deployed and have many uses, for example in critical embedded systems. The applications of this kind of network meets the common needs of most embedded systems and addressing the particularities of each scenario, such as limitations of computing resources and energy supply. Problems such as denial of service attacks are common place and cause great inconvenience. Thus, this study presents simulations of denial of service attacks on 802.11 wireless networks using the network simulator OMNeT++. Furthermore, we present an approach to mitigate such attack, obtaining significant results for improving wireless networks.

This paper proposes the Optimized Power save Algorithm for continuous Media Applications (OPAMA) to improve end-user device energy efficiency. OPAMA enhances the standard legacy Power Save Mode (PSM) of IEEE 802.11 by taking into consideration application specific requirements combined with data aggregation techniques. By establishing a balanced cost/benefit tradeoff between performance and energy consumption, OPAMA is able to improve energy efficiency, while keeping the end-user experience at a desired level. OPAMA was assessed in the OMNeT++ simulator using real traces of variable bitrate video streaming applications. The results showed the capability to enhance energy efficiency, achieving savings up to 44% when compared with the IEEE 802.11 legacy PSM.

The widespread deployment of wireless mobile communications enables an almost permanent usage of portable devices, which imposes high demands on the battery of these devices. Indeed, battery lifetime is becoming one the most critical factors on the end-users satisfaction when using wireless communications. In this work, the optimized power save algorithm for continuous media applications (OPAMA) is proposed, aiming at enhancing the energy efficiency on end-users devices. By combining the application specific requirements with data aggregation techniques, {OPAMA} improves the standard {IEEE} 802.11 legacy Power Save Mode (PSM) performance. The algorithm uses the feedback on the end-user expected quality to establish a proper tradeoff between energy consumption and application performance. {OPAMA} was assessed in the OMNeT++ simulator, using real traces of variable bitrate video streaming applications, and in a real testbed employing a novel methodology intended to perform an accurate evaluation concerning video Quality of Experience (QoE) perceived by the end-users. The results revealed the {OPAMA} capability to enhance energy efficiency without degrading the end-user observed QoE, achieving savings up to 44 when compared with the {IEEE} 802.11 legacy PSM.
