The effects of chromium or nickel oxide additions on the composition of Portland clinker were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction associated with pattern analysis by the Rietveld method. The co-processing of industrial waste in Portland cement plants is an alternative solution to the problem of final disposal of hazardous waste. Industrial waste containing chromium or nickel is hazardous and is difficult to dispose of. It was observed that in concentrations up to 1% in mass, the chromium or nickel oxide additions do not cause significant alterations in Portland clinker composition. New additions to the cement are needed to achieve a more sustainable construction material. Within this context, bottom ashes produced in coal-fired power stations are currently wastes which are dumped provoking an environmental problem. Only in few cases are being used in minor applications. However, the present PhD Thesis shows how this material can be used as a main constituent of Portland cement when it is mixed in an optimised proportion with fly ashes or added to the Portland clinker alone. Therefore, this study may also be considered as a pre-standardization work which covers both the environmental and economic demands of society. Chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics of pulverized coal combustion bottom ash used as a potential constituent of Portland cements (with additions) are studied in comparison to Portland cements with fly ashes. Therefore, the aim of this experimental PhD Thesis is the analysis of the performance of mortars made of clinker of Portland cement and bottom and/or fly ashes in similar proportions to those of CEM II/A-V, CEM II/B-V and CEM IV/A (V) according to EN 197-1:2011. Characterisation of bottom and fly ashes has been done by XRF, ICP, chemical analyses, XRD, density, laser granulometry, Blaine, ATD, TG, pozzolanity, SEM and EDS. Characterisation of bottom and fly ashes mixes has been perform by chemical analyses, XRF, ICP, XRD, MIP, laser granulometry, pozzolanity, SEM, EDS, setting time, soundness, colorimetric test, heat of hydration, ATD, TG, compressive strength, and durability tests (natural carbonation, frost-thaw resistance, sulphate resistance and silica-alkali resistance). In conclusion, it can be established that partial or complete replacement of fly ash by bottom ash has neither significant effect on mechanical nor durability properties. Even, they are improved in several aspects. Therefore, it is recommended to standardise the bottom ash as a main cement constituent of the European standard EN 197-1:2011. Nowadays, most bottom ashes are considered as waste without any potential re-use. Only a few papers deal with the study of this material and its use mixed with fly ashes to be employed as a main constituent of Portland cement. Therefore, the execution of an integrated study considering together aspects from the initial characterization of the ashes and blinder mixes to the hydration steps, strength achievement, leading behaviour and durability (natural carbonation, sulphate attack, aggregate-alcali reaction and freeze-thaw resistance) is totally new. As result, it is proposed to include this new addition for particular applications in the appropriate cement standard. The results have shown that with regard to the compressive strength at 1, 3, 7, 28 and 90 days, partial or complete replacement of fly ash by bottom ash in CEM II/A-V, CEM II/B-V and CEM IV/A has no more significant effects. Partially, this can be explained because the bottom ash contains a similar amount of most of the elements, Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, SrO2, and so on, instead of ZnO. Therefore, slight hydration differences are expected. The presence of such oxides might have a significant effect on pore solution concentration and so will be leachable constituents. They will also play an important role in the cement properties such as setting times and durability.

To evaluate the biocompatibility and the setting time of Portland cement clinker with or without 2% or 5% calcium sulfate and MTA-CPM. Twenty-four mice (Rattus norvegicus) received subcutaneously polyethylene tubes filled with Portland cement clinker with or without 2% or 5% calcium sulfate and MTA. After 15, 30 and 60 days of implantation, the animals were killed and specimens were prepared for microscopic analysis. For evaluation of the setting time, each material was analyzed using Gilmore needles weighing 113.5 g and 456.5 g, according to the ASTM specification Number C266-08 guideline. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test for setting time and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test for biocompatibility at 5% significance level. Histologic observation showed no statistically significant difference of biocompatibility (p>0.05) among the materials in the subcutaneous tissues. For the setting time, clinker without calcium sulfate showed the shortest initial and final setting times (6.18 s/21.48 s), followed by clinker with 2% calcium sulfate (9.22 s/25.33 s), clinker with 5% calcium sulfate (10.06 s/42.46 s) and MTA (15.01 s/42.46 s). All the tested materials showed biocompatibility and the calcium sulfate absence shortened the initial and final setting times of the white Portland cement clinker

In situ fusion on the boat-type graphite platform has been used as a sample pretreatment for the direct determination of Co, Cr and Mn in Portland cement by solid sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-GF AAS). The 3-field Zeeman technique was adopted for background correction to decrease the sensitivity during measurements. This strategy allowed working with up to 200 mu g of sample. The in situ fusion was accomplished using 10 mu L of a flux mixture 4.0% m/v Na(2)CO(3) + 4.0% m/v ZnO + 0.1% m/v Triton (R) X-100 added over the cement sample and heated at 800 degrees C for 20 s. The resulting mould was completely dissolved with 10 mu L of 0.1% m/v HNO(3). Limits of detection were 0.11 mu g g(-1) for Co, 1.1 mu g g(-1) for Cr and 1.9 mu g g(-1) for Mn. The accuracy of the proposed method has been evaluated by the analysis of certified reference materials. The values found presented no statistically significant differences compared to the certified values (Student`s t-test, p<0.05). In general, the relative standard deviation was lower than 12% (n = 5). (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is an environmentally contentious material, as for every ton of OPC produced, on average, 0.97 tons of CO2 are released. Ye'elimite-rich cements are considered as eco-cements because their manufacturing process releases less CO2 into the atmosphere than OPC; this is due to the low calcite demand. Belite-Alite-Ye’elimite (BAY) cements are promising eco-friendly building materials as OPC substitutes at a large scale. The reaction of alite and ye´elimite with water should develop cements with high mechanical strengths at early ages, while belite will contribute to later curing times. However, they develop lower mechanical strengths at early-medium ages than OPC. It is known that the presence of different polymorphs of ye'elimite and belite affects the hydration due to the different reactivity of those phases. Thus, a solution to this problem may be well the activation of BAY clinkers by preparing them with 'H-belite and pseudo-cubic-ye'elimite, jointly with alite. The aim of this work is the preparation and characterization of active-BAY clinkers which contain high percentages of coexisting 'H-belite and pseudo-cubic-ye'elimite, jointly with alite to develop, in a future step, comparable mechanical strengths to OPC. The parameters evolved in the preparation of the clinker have been optimized, including the selection of raw materials (mineralizers and activators) and clinkering conditions. Finally, the clinker was characterized through laboratory X-ray powder diffraction, in combination with the Rietveld methodology, and scanning electron microscopy.

Rice husk, employed as an energy source at milling industries in Brazil generates, after burning, a dark ash. This residue is not yet conveniently disposed, being currently dumped on large areas, causing environmental problems. This research intended to evaluate the applications of residual rice husk ashes (RHA) as a partial replacement of cement for mortar production. Rice husk ash was chemically characterized through X-ray fluorescence, determination of carbon content, X-ray diffraction, and laser granulometric analysis. Mortar specimens were submitted to two different exposure conditions: internal and external environments at a maximum period of five months. Physical-mechanical testing were compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). Although presenting good mechanical performance, the mortar based on ash (RHA) did not present pozolanicity but it can be employed in cement matrices as inert material (filler).

Two clinical cases in which Portland cement (PC) was applied as a medicament after pulpotomy of mandibular primary molars in children are presented. Pulpotomy using PC was carried out in two mandibular first molars and one mandibular second molar, which were further followed-up. At the 3, 6 and 12-month follow-up appointments, clinical and radiographic examinations of the pulpotomized teeth and their periradicular area revealed that the treatments were successful in maintaining the teeth asymptomatic and preserving pulpal vitality. Additionally, the formation of a dentin bridge immediately below the PC could be observed in the three molars treated. PC may be considered as an effective alternative for primary molar pulpotomies, at least in a short-term period. Randomized clinical trials with human teeth are required in order to determine the suitability of PC before unlimited clinical use can be recommended.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hydrogenionic potential and electrical conductivity of Portland cements and MTA, as well as the amount of arsenic and calcium released from these materials. In Teflon molds, samples of each material were agitated and added to plastic flasks containing distilled water for 3, 24, 72 and 168 h. The results were analyzed with a Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test for global comparisons and a Dunn-Tukey test for pairwise comparisons. The results revealed no significant differences in the pH of the materials (p > 0.05). The electrical conductivity of the cements were not statistically different (p > 0.05). White non-structural cement and MTA BIO released the largest amount of calcium ions into solution (p < 0.05), while arsenic release was insignificant in all of the materials (p > 0.05). The results indicated that the physico-chemical properties of Portland cements and MTA were similar. Furthermore, all materials produced an alkaline environment and can be considered safe for clinical use because arsenic was not released. The electrical conductivity and the amount of calcium ions released into solution increased over time.

Urban rainfall-runoff residuals contain metals such as Cr, Zn, Cu, As, Pb and Cd and are thus reasonable candidates for treatment using Portland cement-based solidification-stabilization (S/S). This research is a study of S/S of urban storm water runoff solid residuals in Portland cement with quicklime and sodium bentonite additives. The solidified residuals were analyzed after 28 days of hydration time using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and solid-state Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the main cement hydration products are ettringite, calcium hydroxide and hydrated calcium silicates. Zinc hydroxide and lead and zinc silicates are also present due to the reactions of the waste compounds with the cement and its hydration products. Si-29 NMR analysis shows that the coarse fraction of the waste apparently does not interfere with cement hydration, but the fine fraction retards silica polymerization.

This study focuses on the technical feasibility of the utilization of waste from the cutting of granite to adjust the chemical composition of slag from steelworks LD, targeting the addition of clinker Portland cement. For this, chemical characterization of the waste, its mixture and fusion was performed, obtaining a CaO/SiO(2) relationship of around 0.9 to 1.2 for the steelworks slag. We selected samples of the waste, mixed, melted and cooled in water and in the oven. Samples cooled in water, after examining with X-ray difractrograms, had been predominantly amorphous. For samples cooled in the furnace, which had vitreous, there was the presence of mineralogical phases Akermanita and Gehlenita, which is considered as the ideal stage for the mineral water activity of the slag. The adjustment of the chemical composition of the slag from steel works by the addition of waste granite was efficient, transforming the waste into a product that is the same as blast furnace slag and can be used in the manufacture of cement.

The aim of this work is to study the reaction rate and the morphology of intermediate reaction products during iron ore reduction when iron ore and carbonaceous materials are agglomerated together with or without Portland cement. The reaction was performed at high temperatures, and used small size samples in order to minimise heat transfer constraints. Coke breeze and pure graphite were the carbonaceous materials employed. Portland cement was applied as a binder, and pellet diameters were in the range 5.6-6.5 mm. The experimental technique involved the measurement of the pellet weight loss, as well as the interruption of the reaction at different stages, in order to submit the partially reduced pellet to scanning electron microscopy. The experimental temperature was in the range 1423-1623 K, and the total reaction time varied from 240 to 1200 s. It was observed that above 1523 K the formation of liquid slag occurred inside the pellets, which partially dissolved iron oxides. The apparent activation energies obtained were 255 kJ mol(-1) for coke breeze containing pellets, and 230 kJ mol(-1) for those pellets containing graphite. It was possible to avoid heat transfer control of the reaction rate up to 1523 K by employing small composite pellets.

The mechanical properties of Portland cement are closely related to the chemical composition of the clinker and particularly to the concentration of tricalcium silicate, C3S. In the industrial production process, the clinker must be rapidly quenched, to avoid its decomposition into dicalcium silicate and lime and also to avoid the transformation from higher temperature phases to lower temperature phases. This study investigated the kinetics of thermal decomposition of the C3S. Samples of laboratory-made C3S were thermally treated under specific conditions to determine the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram of the material. The CCT diagram of the C3S showed decomposition rates with values that were much higher than the values traditionally accepted in the literature.

Ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer. as latex or redispersable powder, is added to mortars and concrete to improve the fracture toughness, impermeability and bond strength to various substrates. The physical and chemical interactions were already proved after one day of hydration but during the first hour just the physical interaction was identified and some evidences of a chemical interaction. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the chemical interaction between EVA and Portland cement during the first hours of hydration in the thermogravimetric analysis. The results confirmed that the EVA hydrolyses in pH alkaline and consumes calcium ions from the solution, forming an organic salt (calcium acetate). reducing the calcium hydroxide content. And, its interaction occurred in the first 15 min of hydration. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the radiopacity of 5 root end filling materials (white MTA Angelus, MTA Bio, light-cured MTA, Sealepox RP, and Portland cement clinker with bismuth oxide and calcium sulfate). Method. Five specimens, 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness according to specification ISO 6876: 2001 were fabricated from each material and radiographed using Insigth occlusal films close to a graduated aluminum step-wedge (2 to 16 mm in thickness). Radiographs were digitized and compared to the aluminum step-wedge. The radiographic density data were converted into millimeters of aluminum (mm Al), using the Digora 1.51 software. Results were evaluated statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey test. The level of significance was set at 5% (P<.05%). Results. Radiopacity values ranged from 1.21 mm Al (light-cured MTA) to 6.45 mm Al (MTA Angelus). Comparison between materials showed significant difference (P<.05) between MTA Angelus and all other materials, between Sealepox RP and MTA Bio, and between light-cured MTA and Portland cement clinker. Light-cured MTA was significantly less radiopaque than all other materials. No significant difference (P>.05) was found between MTA Bio and Portland cement clinker. Conclusions. All retrograde filling materials evaluated showed greater radiopacity than dentin. All the materials, except light-cured MTA met the minimum radiopacity standards of 3 mm Al recognized by the ISO 6876: 2001 and ADA n.57. This study evaluated the radiopacity of Portland cement associated with the following radiopacifying agents: bismuth oxide, zinc oxide, lead oxide, bismuth subnitrate, bismuth carbonate, barium sulfate, iodoform, calcium tungstate, and zirconium oxide. A ratio of 20% radiopacifier and 80% white Portland cement by weight was used for analysis. Pure Portland cement and dentin served as controls. Cement/radiopacifier and dentin disc-shaped specimens were fabricated, and radiopacity testing was performed according to the ISO 6876/2001 standard for dental root sealing materials. Using Insight occlusal films, the specimens were radiographed near to a graduated aluminum stepwedge varying from 2 to 16 mm in thickness. The radiographs were digitized and radiopacity compared with the aluminum stepwedge using Digora software (Orion Corporation Soredex, Helsinki, Finland). The radiographic density data were converted into mmAl and analyzed statistically by analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer test (alpha = 0.05). The radiopacity of pure Portland cement was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than that of dentin, whereas all cement/radiopacifier mixtures were significantly more radiopaque than dentin and Portland cement alone (p < 0.05). Portland cement/bismuth oxide and Portland cement/lead oxide presented the highest radiopacity values and differed significantly from the other materials (p < 0.05), whereas Portland cement/zinc oxide presented the lowest radiopacity values of all mixtures (p < 0.05). All tested substances presented higher radiopacity than that of dentin and may potentially be added to the Portland cement as radiopacifying agents. However, the possible interference of the radiopacifiers with the setting chemistry, biocompatibility, and physical properties of the Portland cement should be further investigated before any clinical recommendation can be done.
