Morality and Gender in Jeff Lindsay's Dexter Novels

Tutkimuksessa analysoin neljää Jeff Lindsayn Dexter -dekkaria kahdesta eri näkökulmasta. Ensimmäinen osa keskittyy päähenkilön sosiopaattisen persoonan aiheuttamiin moraalisiin ristiriitoihin, sillä hän on sekä sarjamurhaaja että työskentelee poliisin laboratoriossa silti noudattaen erittäin tiukkaa moraalista ohjenuoraa, joka määrittää kenet hän saa tappaa. Tutkimuksen toinen osa tarkastelee kirjojen naishahmoja ja heidän ongelmiaan. Käsittelen lyhyesti myös kirjasarjan ja niiden pohjalta tehdyn televisiosarjan eroja. Metodeina käytän lähiluentaa, eettistä analyysiä sekä rikoskirjallisuuden alalajien vertailua. Vaikkei rikoskirjallisuudessa olekaan yleistä, että poliisi tai tutkija olisi siviilissä rikollinen, on Dexter hyvin tyypillinen fiktiivinen sosiopaatti ja sarjamurhaaja. Lindsayn kirjojen juonet ja Dexter päähenkilönä noudattavat paikoin lähes kirjaimellisesti Thomas Harrisin Hannibal Lecterille luomaa kaavaa. Kirjojen moraaliset ristiriidat taas aiheutuvat sekä Dexterin roolista lainvartijana ja -rikkojana että hänen noudattamastaan tiukasta moraalisesta ohjenuorasta, joka määrittää kenet saa tappaa. Sosiopaattina hänen pitäisi olla kaikkien yhteiskunnan asettamien lakien ja rajoitusten tavoittamattomissa, mutta silti hänen päätöksentekonsa perustuu täysin kasvatti-isänsä laatimiin ohjeisiin. Tämä on yksi Dexterin hahmon suurimmista ristiriitaisuuksista, joka vahvistaa Heta Pyrhösen esittämän ajatuksen siitä, ettei rikoskirjallisuus tule toimeen ilman vahvaa moraalista selkärankaa. Edes Dexterin sisko Deborah ei pysty säilyttämään osaansa kirjojen naispäähenkilönä, sillä hänen ammattitaitoaan poliisina ja olemustaan naisena kuvataan jatkuvan ristiriitaisesti. Kaksi seuraavaksi tärkeintä naishahmoa ovat Dexterin tyttöystävä Rita, joka toimii äitiyden ruumiillistumana, sekä hänen tyttärensä Astor, joka on veljensä ohella samanlainen sosiopaatti kuin Dexter. Naissarjamurhaajien puute ja naishahmojen epäjohdonmukainen kuvaus ovat yksi Lindsayn kirjojen suurimmista ongelmista. The discussion provides a microeconomic perspective on some of the key issues relating to recent research on competitiveness, productivity, clusters, US economic leadership, economic growth and development.

Competitive advantage revisited: Michael Porter on strategy and competitiveness.

Strategic management is constantly evolving as both an academic discipline and as a reflection of management practice. This article, based on a recent interview with Michael Porter, assesses his contribution to the development of the discipline in the context of the advances that have taken place since the publication of his seminal work Competitive Strategy in 1980. The authors conclude that Porter has made major lasting contributions to strategy, increasing both its academic rigor and its accessibility to managers. The article and interview place Porter's work at the center of the development of strategic management in terms of the provision of practical analytical frameworks, transforming it into a recognized and recognizable field of academic study and management practice. This feat of transformation has not been equaled before or since, so that 25 years after his first seminal contribution, Porter's work continues to provide remarkable insights into the nature of competition and strategy.

Super-villains of the "real world": the political use of the characterization of villains in Chistopher Nolan's "Dark Knight Trilogy"

It is almost a tradition that celluloid (or digital) villains are represented with some characteristics that remind us the real political enemies of the producer country of the film, or even enemies within the country according to the particular ideology that sustains the film. The case of Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight trilogy, analyzed here, is representative of this trend for two reasons. First, because it gets marked by political radicalization conducted by the US government after the attack of September 11, 2001. Secondly, because it offers a profuse gallery of villains who are outside the circle of friends as the new doctrine “either with us or against us” opened by George Bush for the XXI century. This gallery includes from the very terrorists who justify the War on Terror (Ra's al Ghul, the Joker), to the “radical left” (Bane, Talia al Ghul) including liberal politicians (Harvey Dent), and corrupt that take advantage of the softness of the law to commit crimes with impunity (Dr. Crane, the Scarecrow).

Re-Envisioning the Artist Hero Through Two Cole Porter Biopics

Songwriter Cole Porter is unusual in having had two biopics based on his life: Night and Day (1946) starring Cary Grant, and De-Lovely (2004), starring Kevin Kline. The differences in the treatment of the character of Cole Porter between the films are striking, and indicate a change in the way that society envisions its artists, and the very act of creativity. Night and Day was conceived partly as a showcase of Porter's songs, but also as a means of providing inspiration to soldiers returning wounded from World War II, based on Porter's recovery from a traumatic riding accident. It depicts Porter as an everyman following a trajectory of achievement, from having little to great success, which was positioned as easy to emulate. De-Lovely, on the other hand, is about the relationship between Porter and his wife Linda, and the way that his creativity was influenced by his changing relationships with various people. Drawing on the work on biopics of scholars such as G.F.Custen, together with research into the shifting ideas of how creativity operates and is popularly understood, this article uses these biopics as case studies to examine the representation of changing concepts of the artist and the act of creativity through Hollywood film. It also considers how these changing conceptions and representations connect to shifts in American society.
