The commercially available Jacobsen catalyst, Mn(salen), was occluded in hybrid polymeric membranes based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The obtained systems were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and SEM techniques. The membranes were used as a catalytic barrier between two different phases: an organic substrate phase (cyclooctene or styrene) in the absence of solvent, and an aqueous solution of either t-BuOOH or H(2)O(2). Membranes containing different percentages of PVA were prepared, in order to modulate their hydrophilic/hydrophobic swelling properties. The occluded complex proved to be an efficient catalyst for the oxidation of alkenes. The new triphasic system containing a cheap and easily available catalyst allowed substrate oxidation and easy product separation using ""green"" oxidants. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. PVC supported liquid membrane and carbon paste potentiometric sensors incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin complex as a neutral host molecule were developed for the determination of paracetamol. The measurements were carried out in solution at pH 5.5. Under such conditions paracetamol exists as a neutral molecule. The mechanism of molecular recognition between the Mn(III)-porphyrin and paracetamol, leading to potentiometric signal generation, is discussed. The sensitivity and selectivity toward paracetamol of carbon paste and polymeric liquid membrane electrodes incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin host were compared. The applicability of these sensors to the direct determination of paracetamol was checked by performing a recovery test in human plasma.

Pure hydrogen production from methane is a multi-step process run on a large scale for economic reasons. However, hydrogen can be produced in a one-pot continuous process for small scale applications, namely Low Temperature Steam Reforming. Here, Steam Reforming is carried out in a reactor whose walls are composed by a membrane selective toward hydrogen. Pd is the most used membrane material due to its high permeability and selectivity. However, Pd deteriorates at temperatures higher than 500°C, thus the operative temperature of the reaction has to be lowered. However, the employment of a membrane reactor may allow to give high yields thanks to hydrogen removal, which shifts the reaction toward the products. Moreover, pure hydrogen is produced. This work is concentrated on the synthesis of a catalytic system and the investigation of its performances in different processes, namely oxy-reforming, steam reforming and water gas shift, to find appropriate conditions for hydrogen production in a catalytic membrane reactor. The catalyst supports were CeZr and Zr oxides synthesized by microemulsion, impregnated with different noble metals. Pt, Rh and PtRh based catalysts were tested in the oxy reforming process at 500°C, where Rh on CeZr gave the most interesting results. On the opposite, the best performances in low temperature steam reforming were obtained with Rh impregnated on Zr oxide. This catalyst was selected to perform low temperature steam reforming in a Pd membrane reactor. The hydrogen removal given by the membrane allowed to increase the methane conversion over the equilibrium of a classical fixed bed reactor thanks to an equilibrium shift effect. High hydrogen production and recoveries were also obtained, and no other compound permeated through the membrane which proved to be hydrogen selective.

An aneurysm is a localized blood-filled dilatation of an artery whose consequences can be deadly. One of its current treatments is endovascular aneurysm repair, a minimally invasive procedure in which an endoprosthesis, called a stent-graft, is placed transluminally to prevent wall rupture. Early stent-grafts were custom designed for the patient through the assembling of off-the-shelf components by the operating surgeon. However, nowadays, stent-grafts have become a commercial product. The existing endoprostheses differ in several aspects, such as shape design and materials, but they have in common a metallic scaffold with a polymeric covering membrane. This article aims to gather relevant information for those who wish to understand the principles of stent-grafts and even to develop new devices. Hence, a stent-graft classification based on different characteristics is presented and the desired features for an ideal device are pointed out. Additionally, the materials currently in use to fabricate this type of endoprosthesis are reviewed and new materials are suggested.

Nowadays microfluidic is becoming an important technology in many chemical and biological processes and analysis applications. The potential to replace large-scale conventional laboratory instrumentation with miniaturized and self-contained systems, (called lab-on-a-chip (LOC) or point-of-care-testing (POCT)), offers a variety of advantages such as low reagent consumption, faster analysis speeds, and the capability of operating in a massively parallel scale in order to achieve high-throughput. Micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) technologies enable both the fabrication of miniaturized system and the possibility of developing compact and portable systems. The work described in this dissertation is towards the development of micromachined separation devices for both high-speed gas chromatography (HSGC) and gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) using MEMS technologies. Concerning the HSGC, a complete platform of three MEMS-based GC core components (injector, separation column and detector) is designed, fabricated and characterized. The microinjector consists of a set of pneumatically driven microvalves, based on a polymeric actuating membrane. Experimental results demonstrate that the microinjector is able to guarantee low dead volumes, fast actuation time, a wide operating temperature range and high chemical inertness. The microcolumn consists of an all-silicon microcolumn having a nearly circular cross-section channel. The extensive characterization has produced separation performances very close to the theoretical ideal expectations. A thermal conductivity detector (TCD) is chosen as most proper detector to be miniaturized since the volume reduction of the detector chamber results in increased mass and reduced dead volumes. The microTDC shows a good sensitivity and a very wide dynamic range. Finally a feasibility study for miniaturizing a channel suited for GrFFF is performed. The proposed GrFFF microchannel is at early stage of development, but represents a first step for the realization of a highly portable and potentially low-cost POCT device for biomedical applications.

Lääkeaineiden poistaminen jätevedestä on tärkeää lääkeainejäämien ympäristöön pääsyn ehkäisemiseksi.

Ascorbic acid is found in many food samples. Its clinical and technological importance demands an easyto- use, rapid, robust and inexpensive method of analysis. For this purpose, this work proposes a new flow procedure based on the oxidation of ascorbic acid by periodate. A new potentiometric periodate sensor was constructed to monitor this reaction. The selective membranes were of PVC with porphyrin-based sensing systems and a lipophilic cation as additive. The sensor displayed a near-Nernstian response for periodate over 1.0x10-2–6.0x10-6 M, with an anionic slope of 73.9 ± 0.9 mV decade-1. It was pH independent in acidic media and presented good selectivity features towards several inorganic anions. The flow set-up operated in double-channel, carrying a 5.0x10-4 M IO- 4 solution and a suitable buffer; these were mixed in a 50-cm reaction coil. The overall flow rate was 7 ml min-1 and the injection volume 70 µl. Under these conditions, a linear behaviour against concentration was observed for 17.7–194.0 µg ml-1, presenting slopes of 0.169 mV (mg/l)-1, a reproducibility of ±1.1 mV (n = 5), and a sampling rate of ~96 samples h-1. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of beverages and pharmaceuticals.

Polyphosphate (polyP) occurs ubiquitously in cells, but its functions are poorly understood and its synthesis has only been characterized in bacteria. Using x-ray crystallography, we identified a eukaryotic polyphosphate polymerase within the membrane-integral vacuolar transporter chaperone (VTC) complex. A 2.6 angstrom crystal structure of the catalytic domain grown in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) reveals polyP winding through a tunnel-shaped pocket. Nucleotide- and phosphate-bound structures suggest that the enzyme functions by metal-assisted cleavage of the ATP gamma-phosphate, which is then in-line transferred to an acceptor phosphate to form polyP chains. Mutational analysis of the transmembrane domain indicates that VTC may integrate cytoplasmic polymer synthesis with polyP membrane translocation. Identification of the polyP-synthesizing enzyme opens the way to determine the functions of polyP in lower eukaryotes.

The two air-stable manganese(II) salicylate complexes [Mn2(Hsal)4(H2O)4]1 and polymeric [{Mn2(sal)2(Hsal)(H2O)(H3O)(py)4·2py}n]2(H2sal = salicylic acid and py = pyridine) have been synthesised easily, and their crystal structures determined. Both contain unsymmetrically bridging salicylate ligands. In the presence of added pyridine 1 and 2 vigorously catalyse the disproportionation of H2O2.

This research paper deals with the evolution of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced in the mixed liquor of two 25 L bench-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs), with micro (MF-MBR) and ultrafiltration (UF-MBR) submerged membranes. The conclusion focuses on the relationship between the operation and how EPS respond, demonstrating that significant changes in EPS concentration were commonly observed when abrupt changes in the operational conditions took place. Bound EPS (EPSb) showed moderate positive statistical correlations with sludge age and MLSS for the two MBRs. Soluble EPS (EPSs), on the other hand, showed a moderate negative statistical correlation between EPSs with the two parameters analyzed for MF-MBR and no correlation with the UF-MBR was found. With respect to the composition of EPS, EPSb were mostly made up of proteins (44–46%) whereas in EPSs, the three components (proteins, carbohydrates, and humic substances) appeared in approximately the same proportion. The statistical analysis exhibited strong positive correlations between EPSb and their constituents, however for EPSs, the correlation was strong only with carbohydrates and moderate with humic substances.

The objective of this study is to graft the Surface of carbon black, by chemically introducing polymeric chains (Nafion (R) like) with proton-conducting properties. This procedure aims for a better interaction of the proton-conducting phase with the metallic catalyst particles, as well as hinders posterior support particle agglomeration. Also loss of active surface call be prevented. The proton conduction between the active electrocatalyst site and the Nafion (R) ionomer membrane should be enhanced, thus diminishing the ohmic drop ill the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). PtRu nanoparticles were supported on different carbon materials by the impregnation method and direct reduction with ethylene glycol and characterized using amongst others FTIR, XRD and TEM. The screen printing technique was used to produce membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) for single cell tests in H(2)/air(PEMFC) and methanol operation (DMFC). In the PEMFC experiments, PtRu supported on grafted carbon shows 550 mW cm(-2) gmetal(-1) power density, which represents at least 78% improvement in performance, compared to the power density of commercial PtRu/C ETEK. The DMFC results of the grafted electrocatalyst achieve around 100% improvement. The polarization Curves results clearly show that the main Cause of the observed effect is the reduction in ohmic drop, caused by the grafted polymer. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrocatalytic activity of Pt and RuO(2) mixed electrodes of different compositions towards methanol oxidation was investigated. The catalysts were prepared by thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray, scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. This preparation method allowed obtaining uniform films with controlled stoichiometry and high surface area. Cyclic voltammetry experiments in the presence of methanol showed that mixed electrodes decreased the potential peak of methanol oxidation by approximately 100 mV (RHE) when compared to the electrode containing only Pt. In addition, voltammetric experiments indicated that the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode led to higher oxidation current densities at lower potentials. Chronoamperometry experiments confirmed the contribution of RuO(2) to the catalytic activity as well as the better performance of the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode composition. Formic acid and CO(2) were identified as being the reaction products formed in the electrolysis performed at 400 and 600 mV. The relative formation of CO(2) was favored in the electrolysis performed at 400 mV (RHE) with the Pt(0.6)Ru(0.4)O(y) electrode. The presence of RuO(2) in Pt-Ru-based electrodes is important for improving the catalytic activity towards methanol electrooxidation. Moreover, the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors seems to be a promising route for the production of catalysts applicable to DMFC. (C) 2009 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.
