This paper describes the fabrication of an ion-selective electrode in which a polymeric Schiff base complex of cobalt(II) is used as the ionophore. The main advantage of the electrode is that it is mechanically stable upto 3 months..The electrode shows a linear response in the range of 2.5 × 10-5-0.5 × 10-1 mol dm-3. The response time of the electrode is 30 s.The pH range at which the electrode works is 3.8 to 6.8. The electrode was found to be selective towards chloride ion in the presence of ions like Na+, Ca2+, Mn2+, ,Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, CH3COO-, NO3-, SO42- ,Br- and NO2-.

Salicylaldehyde Schiff base of amino-methylated polystyrene has been developed as a novel reagent for the removal of Fe(III) from solutions. The selectivity of the metal ion uptake over a wide range of different concentrations of metal ion, effect of pH, ligand concentration and the influence of other foreign ions were studied. A very good selectivity was achieved for the removal of the ion. It was found that 0.01 g of the ligand was sufficient to achieve about 96% removal of the metal ion in terms of concentration (ppm) from a 30 ppm solution in acidic pH.

This paper reports the synthesis of a series of six new polystyrene anchored metal complexes of Co(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and dioxouanium(VI) using the polystyrene anchored Schiff base of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde and the corresponding metal salts. The metal salts used were anhydrous FeCl3, CoCl2 Æ 6H2O, Ni(CH3COO)2 Æ 4H2O, Cu(CH3- COO)2 Æ H2O, Zn(CH3COO)2 Æ 2H2O, and UO2(CH3COO) Æ 2H2O. Physico chemical characterizations have been made from diffuse reflectance and vibrational spectra, elemental analysis, magnetic measurements, and TG studies. The elemental analysis suggest a 1:2 metal:ligand ratio when the complexation has carried out at 70 C for about 12 h reflux. The ligand is monodentate and coordinates through the azomethine nitrogen. The Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes are all paramagnetic whereas Zn(II) and U(VI) are diamagnetic. Zn(II) is assigned a tetrahedral structure, Cu(II) and Co(II) are assigned a square planar structure and Fe(III), Ni(II), and U(VI) are all assigned an octahedral structure. The polystyrene anchored ligand has been developed as an excellent reagent for the removal of Cu(II). Optimum conditions have been developed for the removal of metal ion from solutions by studying the effect of change of concentration of metal ion, ligand, effect of pH, time of reflux, and interference effect of other ions. It was found that within a span of 20 min it is possible to remove 90% of the metal ion from a 30 ppm metal ion solution in the pH range 4–5.5.

The polynuclear copper(II) complex [{Cu2L(O2CC5H4N)}. C2H5OH](x) (1), where H3L is a 1∶2 Schiff base derived from 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol and salicylaldehyde, has been prepared and structurally characterized. The structure consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain in which the binuclear [Cu2L](+) units are covalently linked by isonicotinate ligands to give a syndiotactic arrangement of the copper ions protruding outside the chain. In the basic unit, the copper(II) centres are bridged by an alkoxo and a carboxylato ligand, giving a Cu ... Cu distance of 3.492(3) Angstrom and a Cu-O-Cu angle of 130.9(2)degrees. While one copper centre has a square-planar geometry, the other copper is square-pyramidal with the pyridine nitrogen being the axial ligand. The visible electronic spectrum of 1 shows a broad d-d band at 615 nm. The complex shows a rhombic X-band EPR spectral pattern in the polycrystalline phase at 77 K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 22 to 295 K demonstrate the antiferromagnetic behaviour of 1. A theoretical fit to the magnetic data is based on a model assuming 1 as an equimolar mixture of copper atoms belonging to an antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with the other copper atoms outside the chain behaving like paramagnetic centres.

The mononuclear cobalt(II) complex [CoL2] H2O (where HL is quinoxaline-2-carboxalidine- 2-amino-5-methylphenol) has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurement, IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, TG-DTA, and X-ray structure determination. The crystallographic study shows that cobalt(II) is distorted octahedral with each tridentate NNO Schiff base in a cis arrangement. The crystal exhibits a 2-D polymeric structure parallel to [010] plane, formed by O-H...N and O-H... O intermolecular hydrogen bonds and pye stacking interactions, as a racemic mixture of optical enantiomers. The ligand is a Schiff base derived from quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde

The tridentate Schiff base ligand, 7-amino-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-one (HAMAH), prepared by the mono-condensation of 1,2diaminoethane and acetylacetone, reacts with Cu(BF4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to produce initially a dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [{Cu(AMAH)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipyJ](BF4)(2) (1) which undergoes hydrolysis in the reaction mixture and finally produces a linear polymeric chain compound, [Cu(acac)(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)](n) (2). The geometry around the copper atom in compound 1 is distorted square planar while that in compound 2 is essentially an elongated octahedron. On the other hand, the ligand HAMAH reacts with Cu(ClO4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to yield a polymeric zigzag chain, [{Cu(acac)(CH3OH)(mu-4,4'-bipy)}(ClO4)](n) (3). The geometry of the copper atom in 3 is square pyramidal with the two bipyridine molecules in the cis equatorial positions. All three complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A probable explanation for the different size and shape of the reported polynuclear complexes formed by copper(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine has been put forward by taking into account the denticity and crystal field strength of the blocking ligand as well as the Jahn-Teller effect in copper(II). Four new Cu(II)-azido complexes of formula [CuL(N-3)] (1), [CuL(N-3)](2) (2), [Cu7L2(N-3)(12)](n) (3), and [Cu2L(dmen)-(N-3)(3)](n) (4) (dmen = N,N-dimethylethylenediamine) have been synthesized using the same tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (2-[1-(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)ethyl]phenol, the condensation product of dmen and 2-hydroxyacetophenone). The four compounds have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex 1 is mononuclear, whereas 2 is a single mu-1,1 azido-bridged dinuclear compound. The polymeric compound 3 possesses a 2D structure in which the Cu(II) ions are linked by phenoxo oxygen atoms and two different azide bridges (mu-1,1 and mu-1,1,3). The structure of complex 4 is a double helix in which two mu-1,3-azido-bridged alternating one-dimensional helical chains of CuL(N-3) and Cu(dmen)(N-3)(2) are joined together by weak mu-1,1 azido bridges and H-bonds. The complexes interconvert in solution and can be obtained in pure form by carefully controlling the conditions. The magnetic properties of compounds 1 and 2 show the presence of very weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by a ligand pi overlap (J = -1.77) and by an asymmetric 1,1-N-3 bridge (J = -1.97 cm(-1)), respectively. Compound 3 presents, from the magnetic point of view, a decorated chain structure with both ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. Compound 4 is an alternating helicoidal chain with two weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions (J -1.35 and -2.64 cm(-1)).

Iron(III) complexes, (NHEt3)[Fe(III)(sal-met)(2)] and (NHEt3)[Fe(III)(sal-phe)(2)], of amino acid Schiffbase ligands, viz., N-salicylidene-L-methionine and N-salicylidene L-phenylalanine, have been prepared and their binding to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and photo-induced BSA cleavage activity have been investigated. The complexes are structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal Structures of the discrete mononuclear rnonoanionic complexes show FeN2O4 octahedral coordination geometry in which the tridentate dianionic amino acid Schiff base ligand binds through phenolate and carboxylate oxygen and imine nitrogen atoms. The imine nitrogen atoms are trans to each other. The Fe-O and Fe-N bond distances range between 1.9 and 2.1 angstrom. The sal-met complex has two pendant thiomethyl groups. The high-spin iron(III) complexes (mu(eff) similar to 5.9 mu(B)) exhibit quasi-reversible Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox process near -0.6 V vs. SCE in water. These complexes display a visible electronic hand near 480 nm in tris-HCl buffer assignable to the phenolate-to-iron(III) charge transfer transition. The water soluble complexes bind to BSA giving binding constant values of similar to 10(5) M-1. The Complexes show non-specific oxidative cleavage of BSA protein on photo-irradiation with UV-A light of 365 nm.

New lanthanide complexes of salicylaldehyde-Schiff bases with salicyloyl hydrazide and anthranilic acid, were synthesized by a novel method consisting of refluxing the mixtures of Schiff base ligands and lanthanide trichloroacetate in acetone. Solid complexes of formulae Ln(SHSASB)s*2Hz0 and Ln2(AASASB)s*2Hz0 where Ln = La-Yb and Y, were isolated. Proton NMR and IR spectra for the complexes reveal the bidentate binding of both the Schiff base ligands to the lanthanide ion. Electronic spectra along with the conductance data for the complexes indicate a coordination number of six for the lanthanide ion in the complexes of both the Schiff bases.

Schiff bases and their transition metal complexes are of significant current interest even though they have been prepared for decades. They have been used in various applications such as catalysis, corrosion protection, and molecular sensors. In this study, N-aryl Schiff base ketimine ligands as well as numerous new, differently substituted salen and salophen-type ligands and their cobalt(II), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), and nickel(II) complexes were synthesised. New solid state structures of the above compounds and the dioxygen coordination properties of cobalt(II) complexes and catalytic properties of three synthesised binuclear complexes were examined. The prepared complexes were applied in the formation of self-assembled layers on a polycrystalline gold surface and liquid-graphite interface. The effect of metal ion and ligand structure on the as-formed patterns was studied. When studying gold surfaces, a unique thiol-assisted dissolution of elemental gold was observed and a new thin gold foil preparation method was introduced. In the summary, synthesis, structures, and properties of Schiff base ligands and their transition metal complexes are described in detail and the applications of these reviewed. Assemblies of other complexes on a liquid-graphite interface and on a gold surface are also presented, and the surface characterisation methods and surfaces employed are described.
