Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were prepared using reactive radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of a pure metallic zinc target onto glass substrates. The evolution of the surface morphology and the optical properties of the films were studied as a function of the substrate temperature, which was varied from 50 to 250 C. The surface topography of the samples was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and their optical properties were studied via transmittance measurements in the UV-Vis-NIR region. DRX and AFM analyses showed that the surface morphology undergoes a structural transition at substrate temperatures of around 150 C. Actually, at 50 C the formation of small grains was observed while at 250 C the grains observed were larger and had more irregular shapes. The optical gap remained constant at ∼3.3 eV for all films. In the visible region, the average optical transmittance was 80 %. From these results, one can conclude that the morphological properties of the ZnO thin films were more greatly affected by the substrate temperature, due to mis-orientation of polycrystalline grains, than were the optical properties. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Alumina ceramics with high in-line transmittance at 0.5-1.0 mm-thickness were prepared with different doping additives by sintering at 1850 degrees C in vacuum for 1-8 h. Depending on the additive contents and sintering variables bi-dimensionally large surface grains, caused by surface evaporation of MgO, had grown parallel to the surface with similar to 100 mu m thickness and lateral sizes up to the millimeter range. The abnormal grain-growth process also resulted in the formation of pores entrapped inside the large surface grains within a narrow zone at 10-20 mu m distance from the surface. The fraction of these pores is thickness-invariant. Scattering factors associated to the pores entrapped inside the bi-dimensionally large surface grains, second-phase particles, grain-boundaries, and microstructural surface defects are derived from the results of in-line transmission (at 600 nm) and are used together with microstructural characteristics to explain the light transmittance in these materials. We investigate the excitation and propagation of acoustic waves in polycrystalline aluminum nitride films along the directions parallel and normal to the c-axis. Longitudinal and transverse propagations are assessed through the frequency response of surface acoustic wave and bulk acoustic wave devices fabricated on films of different crystal qualities. The crystalline properties significantly affect the electromechanical coupling factors and acoustic properties of the piezoelectric layers. The presence of misoriented grains produces an overall decrease of the piezoelectric activity, degrading more severely the excitation and propagation of waves traveling transversally to the c-axis. It is suggested that the presence of such crystalline defects in c-axis-oriented films reduces the mechanical coherence between grains and hinders the transverse deformation of the film when the electric field is applied parallel to the surface.

Computational homogenization by means of the finite element analysis of a representative volume element of the microstructure is used to simulate the deformation of nanostructured Ti. The behavior of each grain is taken into account using a single crystal elasto-viscoplastic model which includes the microscopic mechanisms of plastic deformation by slip along basal, prismatic and pyramidal systems. Two different representations of the polycrystal were used. Each grain was modeled with one cubic finite element in the first one while many cubic elements were used to represent each grain in the second one, leading to a model which includes the effect of grain shape and size in a limited number of grains due to the computational cost. Both representations were used to simulate the tensile deformation of nanostructured Ti processed by ECAP-C as well as the drawing process of nanostructured Ti billets. It was found that the first representation based in one finite element per grain led to a stiffer response in tension and was not able to predict the texture evolution during drawing because the strain gradient within each grain could not be captured. On the contrary, the second representation of the polycrystal microstructure with many finite elements per grain was able to predict accurately the deformation of nanostructured Ti.

Detrital modes determined on 68 sandstone samples from CRP-3 drillcore indicate a continuation of the dynamic history of uplift-related erosion and unroofing previously documented in CRP-1 and CRP-2/2A. The source area is identified very strongly with the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) Dry Valleys block in southern Victoria Land. Initial unroofing of the TAM comprised removal of much of a former capping sequence of Jurassic Kirkpatrick basalts, which preceded the formation of the Victoria Land Basin. Erosion of Beacon Supergroup outcrops took place during progressive uplift of the TAM in the Oligocene. Earliest CRP-3 Oligocene samples above 788 metres below the sea floor (mbsf) were sourced overwhelmingly in Beacon Supergroup strata, including a recognisable contribution from Triassic volcanogenic Lashly Formation sandstones (uppermost Victoria Group). Moving up-section, by 500 mbsf, the CRP-3 samples are depauperate quartz arenites dominantly derived from the quartzose Devonian Taylor Group. Between c. 500 and 450 mbsf, the modal parameters show a distinctive change indicating that small outcrops of basement granitoids and metamorphic rocks were also being eroded along with the remaining Beacon (mainly Taylor Group) sequence. Apart from enigmatic fluctuations in modal indices above 450 mbsf, similar to those displayed by samples in CRP-2/2A, the CRP-3 modes are essentially constant (within a broad data scatter) to the top of CRP-3. The proportion of exposed basement outcrop remained at < 20 %, indicating negligible uplift (i.e. relative stability) throughout that period.

A lithographic method was used to produce polycrystalline diamond films having highly defined surface geometry, showing an array of diamond tips for possible application as a field emitter device. The films grown in this study used microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition (MACVD) on a silicon substrate; the substrate was then dissolved away to reveal the surface features on the diamond film. It is possible to align the crystallite direction and affect the electron emission properties using a voltage bias to enhance the nucleation process and influence the nuclei to a preferred orientation. This study focuses on the identification of the distribution of crystal directions in the film, using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) to identify the crystallographic character of the film surface. EBSD allows direct examination of the individual diamond grains, grains boundaries and the crystal orientation of each individual crystallite. The EBSD maps of the bottom (nucleation side) of the films, following which a layer of film is ion-milled away and the mapping process repeated. The method demonstrates experimentally that oriented nucleation occurs and the thin sections allow the crystal texture to be reconstructed in 3-D. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fifty seven short fatigue cracks in the Ni-base superalloy AP1 have been examined, to ascertain how the paths taken by growing fatigue cracks are determined. The observations were made on the surface of a smooth specimen, and on the exposed fracture surfaces. Three dimensional reconstructions of the vulnerable microstructures in the vicinity of the cracks were produced. Initiation occurred in mode II, with the lines of intersection of the initiation sites with the specimen top surface orientated at approximately 45° to the tensile axis. These initiation sites developed in slip bands which crossed a large grain and at least one other grain via a grain boundary with a low angle of misorientation. 'River markings' on one of the initiation facets, indicated that the crack first opened from the top centre of the initiation grain. Subsequent to initiation, the growth paths of these cracks are related to the misorientations of the grains and the progress of the crack front.

The evolution of internal stresses in oxide scales growing on polycrystalline Fe(3)Al alloy in atmospheric air at 700 degrees C was determined using in situ energy-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Ex situ texture analyses were performed after 5 h of oxidation at 700 degrees C. Under these conditions, the oxide-scale thickness, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, lies between 80 and 100 nm. The main phase present in the oxide scales is alpha-Al(2)O(3), with minor quantities of metastable theta-Al(2)O(3) detected in the first minutes of oxidation, as well as alpha-Fe(2)O(3). alpha-Al(2)O(3) grows with a weak (0001) fiber texture in the normal direction. During the initial stages of oxidation the scale develops, increasing levels of compressive stresses which later evolve to a steady state condition situated around -300 MPa. The health-relevant functionality of 10 thermally processed Peruvian Andean grains (five cereals, three pseudocereals, and two legumes) was evaluated for potential type 2 diabetes-relevant antihyperglycemia and antihypertension activity using in vitro enzyme assays. Inhibition of enzymes relevant for managing early stages of type 2 diabetes such as hyperglycemia-relevant alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase and hypertension-relevant angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) were assayed along with the total phenolic content, phenolic profiles, and antioxidant activity based on the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical assay. Purple corn (Zea mays L.) (cereal) exhibited high free radical scavenging-linked antioxidant activity (77%) and had the highest total phenolic content (8 +/- 1 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g of sample weight) and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity (51% at 5 mg of sample weight). The major phenolic compound in this cereal was protocatechuic acid (287 +/- 15 mu g/g of sample weight). Pseudocereals such as Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) and Kaniwa (Chenopodium pallidicaule Aellen) were rich in quercetin derivatives (1,131 +/- 56 and 943 +/- 35 mu g [expressed as quercetin aglycone]/g of sample weight, respectively) and had the highest antioxidant activity (86% and 75%, respectively). Andean legumes (Lupinus mutabilis cultivars SLP-1 and H-6) inhibited significantly the hypertension-relevant ACE (52% at 5 mg of sample weight). No alpha-amylase inhibitory activity was found in any of the evaluated Andean grains. This in vitro study indicates the potential of combination of Andean whole grain cereals, pseudocereals, and legumes to develop effective dietary strategies for managing type 2 diabetes and associated hypertension and provides the rationale for animal and clinical studies.

The longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction and microstructure of polycrystalline Fe(100-x)Ge(x) (x= 8, 12, 15, 20) alloys were investigated in order to correlate the magnetostriction with microstructure. In order to obtain different microstructures in the Fe(100-x)Ge(x) alloys, the samples were annealed at 600 degrees C during 2 h and at 1150 degrees C for half hour and then quenched in cold water. For Ge concentrations lower than 14 at.%, the longitudinal magnetostriction is positive and increases positively up to 22 ppm at 12 at.% Ge then decreases and vanishes at about 14 at.% Ge. For further Ge concentration increase the longitudinal magnetostriction is negative and reaches -30 ppm for Fe(80)Ge(20). This behavior, that is very similar to that reported for Fe-Si alloys, is explained by the structural changes caused by different thermal histories of the alloys. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B. V.
