Water soluble conducting polyaniline with electrical conductivity of 10(-1)-10(-2) S/cm was prepared employing dopant induced water solubility technology. The water resistance of the conducting film was significantly improved employing,sol-gel hybrids method, especially when the conductive polyaniline loading was below 30 wt%. The reason for the improvement is that the conducting polyaniline chains are confined in a stable inorganic network.

It is shown that highly conducting films of polyaniline protonated with di-esters of sulfosuccinic and sulfophthalic acids which contain alkyl- or alkoxy-type substituents exhibit highly anisotropic structural, electrical and magnetic properties. The layered-like structure of these films can be described as consisting of polyaniline chains which are mainly oriented parallel to the plane of the film and form regular out-of-plane stacks. These stacks are separated by bilayers of the dopant anions. Accordingly, the main anisotropy observed for solution cast films implies in-plane and out-of-plane measurements. An electrical anisotropy of about 80 is found for the in-plane and out-of-plane electronic conductivities at 5 K. The temperature dependences of the in-plane and out-of-plane conductivities are qualitatively similar and have been fitted as a series combination of variable-range-hopping-type and power law contributions. A maximum is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical anisotropy at low temperature. The films also show a clear anisotropy of magnetization whose temperature and field characteristics depend on the chemical structure of the dopant anion. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Poly(vinyl butyral)-polyaniline-sodium montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared via polymerization of aniline between clay mineral platelets at two different pH levels (2.0 and 5.0), followed by dispersion of the polyaniline-sodium montmorillonite nanocomposite in a poly(vinyl butyral) solution. A comparison was made of the effect of the pH levels and the polyaniline-sodium montmorillonite nanocomposite precursor on the final structures of the poly(vinyl butyral) nanocomposites and their electrical conductivities. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of nanocomposites at both pH levels. UV-Vis spectra indicated that the polyaniline formed at both pH levels was conductive, with the UV-Vis spectra presenting a band at 420 nm corresponding to the polaronic form and the beginning of a new band at 600 nm indicating the presence of polaronic segments. FTIR spectra revealed the peaks of the groups present in polyaniline and poly(vinyl butyral) nanocomposites. The electrical conductivities of the polyaniline and poly(vinyl butyral) nanocomposites prepared at pH 2.0 were lower than those of the same nanocomposites prepared at pH 5.0, probably due to the lower formation of polyaniline chains in a more acidic dispersion and to the final configuration of polyaniline in the nanocomposites.

High molecular weight polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by a combined procedure incorporating various synthesis methods. Temperature and open circuit potential of the reaction mixture were collected to monitor the reaction progress. The polymer is characterized by various techniques including gel permeation chromatography, dynamic light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry for elucidating the molecular architecture obtained by this method. As-synthesized PANI was found to possess high molecular weight, reduced branching, reduced cross-linking, and to predominantly consist of linear polymer chains. This polymer was also found to be more stable in solution form. JV characteristics of as-synthesized PANI films indicate a high current density which is due to increased free pathways and less traps for the charge transport to occur in PANI films. POLYM. ENG. Aqueous conducting polyaniline dispersion was prepared employing acidic phosphate ester bearing hydrophilic ethylene glycol segment as dopant, and conducting film with electrical conductivity of 25 S/cm was obtained from the dispersion. Ordered self-assembly lamellar structure with interlamellar distance of 1.2 nm was observed in the film, which consisted of alternating layers of rigid polyaniline chain and flexible phosphate ester side chains, where the phosphate side chain layer was separated by two rigid polyaniline layers. The lamellar structure leading to high conducting film was formed due to the confinement of polyaniline chain by crystallizable phosphate side chain, since the electrical conductivity decreased by four orders of magnitude once the dopant side chain crystalline was destroyed. The crystallizable side chain forced lamellar structure is expected to be a new chance for highly conducting polyaniline.

The macroscopic mechanical properties of polyaniline (PANI) lie mainly on two factors, the structure of molecular aggregations of polymers and the mechanical properties of a single polymer chain. The former factor is swell revealed; however, the latter is rarely studied. In this article, we have employed atomic force microscopy-based single-molecule force spectroscopy to investigate the mechanical properties of a kind of water-soluble PANI at a single-molecular level. We have carried out the study comparatively on single-chain-stretching experiments of oxidized, reduced, and doped PANI and obtained a full view of the single-chain elasticity of PANI in all these states. It is found that oxidized and reduced PANI chains are rigid, and the oxidized PANI is more rigid than the reduced PANI. Such a difference in single-chain elasticity can be rationalized by the molecular structures that are composed of benzenoid diamine and quinoid diimine its different proportions. The doped PANI has been found to be more flexible than the oxidized and reduced PANI, and the modified freely jointed chain parameters of doped PANI are similar with those of a common flexible-chain polymer.

A method is developed to estimate the coverage of an electropolymerizable aniline-analogue monolayer (mixture of 2- and 3-aminophenols, 2/3-ATP) by measuring the charge capacitance of the electrode (theta = 81%). The technique of filling the uncovered area (defect sites) of the aniline-analogue monolayer with alkanethiols with long alkane chains (1-decanethiol, 1-DT) has been used to determine the coverage. The dielectric constant (permittivity) of the PANI-analogue monolayer was determined to 8.4. Adsorption kinetics of 1-DT was also studied, and the value of the rate constant of the secondary adsorption was measured to 0.9 mol(-1) dm(3) s(-1).

Free-standing conductive films of organic-inorganic hybrids were prepared employing the sol-gel process of (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and water-borne conductive polyaniline (cPANI) in water/ethanol solution. The hybrids displayed a percolation threshold for electrical conductivity at a volume fraction of 2.1% polyaniline (PANI); the maximum conductivity of the hybrids reached 0.6 S/cm. GPTMS showed good compatibility with water-borne cPANI during the sol-gel process, and freestanding conductive films were obtained at room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy images of the hybrids indicated that the cPANI was dispersed in the inorganic phase in nanoscale. Because of good confinement of cPANI chains in the inorganic network, water resistance of the hybrid films was significantly improved compared with that of pure cPANI; the electrical conductivity of the films kept stable for 6-7 days soaking in water, whereas it decreased sharply for 1 day soaking for the pure cPANI.

A versatile process employing anionic surfactants has been developed for the preparation of processible nanocomposite films with electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. Maghemite (g-Fe2O3) nanoclusters (similar to 10 nm in size) are coated with 4-dodecyl- benzenesulfonic acid, and polyaniline (PAn) chains are doped with 10-camphorsulfonic acid. The coated nanoclusters and doped polymers are soluble in common solvents, and casting the solutions readily gives free-standing nanocomposite films with nanocluster contents as high as similar to 50 wt %. The g-Fe2O3/PAn nanocomposites show high conductivity (82-337 S cm(-1)) and magnetizability (up to similar to 35 emu/g g-Fe2O3).

We here present a versatile process for the preparation of maghemite/polyaniline (gamma-Fe2O3/ PAn) nanocomposite films with macroscopic processibility, electrical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility. The gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are coated and the PAn chains are doped by anionic surfactants of omega-methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) phosphate (PEOPA), 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), and 10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA). Both the coated gamma-Fe2O3 and the doped PAn are soluble in common organic solvents, and casting of the homogeneous solutions gives free-standing nanocomposite films with gamma-Fe2O3 contents up to similar to 50 wt %. The morphology of the gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The gamma-Fe2O3/PAn films prepared from chloroform/m-cresol solutions of DBSA-coated gamma-Fe2O3 and CSA-doped PAn are conductive (sigma = 82-237 S/cm) and superpapamagnetic, exhibiting no hysteresis at room temperature. The zero-field-cooled magnetization experiment reveals that the nanocomposite containing 20.8 wt % gamma-Fe2O3 has a blocking temperature (T-b) in the temperature region of 63-83 K.

This paper presents our work on the rheological properties of the solution of polyaniline (PAn) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). The results indicate that the solution's non-Newtonian property becomes more prominent with the increase in solution concentrations exhibiting the behavior of pseudo-plastic fluid. Besides, there is a critical concentration C-v (around 0.06 g/ml), beyond which the viscosity of the PAn/NMP solution takes a sudden increase. with temperature rising, both the viscosity and the thixotropy of the solution decrease, implying that there exist physical cross-linking interactions between the molecular chains in the solution.

Light emitting polymers (LEP) have drawn considerable attention because of their numerous potential applications in the field of optoelectronic devices. Till date, a large number of organic molecules and polymers have been designed and devices fabricated based on these materials. Optoelectronic devices like polymer light emitting diodes (PLED) have attracted wide-spread research attention owing to their superior properties like flexibility, lower operational power, colour tunability and possibility of obtaining large area coatings. PLEDs can be utilized for the fabrication of flat panel displays and as replacements for incandescent lamps. The internal efficiency of the LEDs mainly depends on the electroluminescent efficiency of the emissive polymer such as quantum efficiency, luminance-voltage profile of LED and the balanced injection of electrons and holes. Poly (p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and regio-regular polythiophenes are interesting electro-active polymers which exhibit good electrical conductivity, electroluminescent activity and high film-forming properties. A combination of Red, Green and Blue emitting polymers is necessary for the generation of white light which can replace the high energy consuming incandescent lamps. Most of these polymers show very low solubility, stability and poor mechanical properties. Many of these light emitting polymers are based on conjugated extended chains of alternating phenyl and vinyl units. The intra-chain or inter-chain interactions within these polymer chains can change the emitted colour. Therefore an effective way of synthesizing polymers with reduced π-stacking, high solubility, high thermal stability and high light-emitting efficiency is still a challenge for chemists. New copolymers have to be effectively designed so as to solve these issues. Hence, in the present work, the suitability of a few novel copolymers with very high thermal stability, excellent solubility, intense light emission (blue, cyan and green) and high glass transition temperatures have been investigated to be used as emissive layers for polymer light emitting diodes.
Spectroscopic investigation of the interactions between emeraldine base polyaniline and Eu(III) ions
Resumo:
The interactions of emeraldine base form of polyaniline (EB-PANI) and Eu(III) ions in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solution and in films have been investigated by UV-vis-NIR, resonance Raman. luminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. These spectroscopic techniques allowed to characterize quinone and semiquinone segments in the polymeric chains. and the oxidation state of europium ions in Eu-PANI samples. For high values of Eu(III)/N molar ratio (24/1) the presence of a weak polaronic absorption band at 980 nm in UV-vis-NIR spectrum and the observation of bands at 1330 and 1378 (nu(center dot)(C-N+)) cm(-1) due to emeraldine salt in the Raman spectrum at 1064 nm indicate a low doping degree. Oxidation of EB-PANI to pernigraniline base (PB-PANI) occurs in diluted solutions. The experimental data showed that the solvent plays an important role on the nature of formed species. The narrow EPR signal at g = 2.006 (line width 8G) confirms the presence of PANI radical cations in Eu-PANI film. The absence of broad signal characteristic of Eu(II) in EPR spectrum suggested that europium ions are primarily at Eu(III) oxidation state. The luminescence spectra of Eu-PANI film presented emission bands at 405 and 418 nm assigned to PANI moieties and bands at 594,615 and 701 nm assigned to (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 1, 2 and 4, respectively) transitions of Eu(III). EPR and photoluminescence data confirm that europium ions are mainly in Eu(III) oxidation state in Eu(III)/PANI films. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, the electronic and structural characterization of polyaniline (PANI) formed in cavities of zeolites Y (ZY) and Mordenite (MOR) and montmorillonite (MMT) clay having Cu(II) as oxidant agent are presented. The formation of PANI and its structure is analyzed by Resonance Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, FT-IR and N K XANES techniques. In all cases the structure of PANT formed is different from the ""free"" polymer. The presence of azo bonds linked to phenazine-like rings are observed only for PANI-MMT composites, independent of the kind of oxidant agent employed in the synthesis. The presence of Cu(II) ions leads to the formation of Phenosafranine-like rings. The presence of these phenazine-like rings in the structure of confined PANT chains can also contribute to the enhancement of the thermal stability observed for all composites. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. In the present work, nanocomposites of polyaniline (PANI) and layered alpha-Zr(HPO4)(2).H2O (alpha-ZrP) were prepared using two different approaches: (i) the in situ aniline polymerization in the presence of the layered inorganic material and (ii) the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly using an aqueous solution of the polycation emeraldine salt (ES-PANI) and a dispersion of exfoliated negative slabs of alpha-ZrP. These materials were characterized spectroscopically using mainly resonance Raman scattering at four exciting radiations and electronic absorption in the UV-VIS-NIR region. Structural and textural characterizations were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The polymer obtained by the in situ aniline polymerization is located primarily in the external surface of the inorganic material although aniline monomers were intercalated between alpha-ZrP interlayer regions before oxidative polymerization. Through resonance Raman spectroscopy, it was observed that the formed polymer has semiquinone units (ES-PANI) and also azo bonds (-N = N-), showing that this method results in a polymer with a different structure from the usual ""head-to-tail"" ES-PANI. The LBL assembly of pre-formed ES-PANI and exfoliated alpha-ZrP particles produces homogeneous films with reproducible deposition from layer to layer, up to 20 bilayers. Resonance Raman (lambda(0) = 632.8 nm) spectrum of PANI/ZrP LBL film shows an enhancement in the intensity of the polaronic band at 1333 cm(-1) (nu C-N center dot+) and the decrease of the band intensity at 1485 cm(-1) compared to bulk ES-PANI. Its UV-VIS-NIR spectrum presents an absorption tail in the NIR region assigned to delocalized free charge carrier. These spectroscopic features are characteristic of highly conductive secondary doped PANI suggesting that polymeric chains in PANI/ZrP LBL film have a more extended conformation than in bulk ES-PANI.
