Stable monolayer of the polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid at the air-water interface has been obtained, of which multilayers have been successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto CaF2 substrate. The limiting mean molecular area and collapse pressure are found to be 0.294 nm(2) and 41 mN/m, respectively. The multilayers were characterized by IR and W-Vis-NIR spectroscopies. X-ray small-angle diffraction data show that the multilayer was periodic layer structure with the layer spacing of 1.60 nm. The comparisons are also made with characterization of the casting film. Photopyroelectric spectroscopy (PPES), in the 400 < lambda < 900 nm wavelength range, was used to study thermal properties of differently doped polyaniline (PAN) films. The photopyroelectric intensity signal V-n(lambda) and its phase F-n(lambda) were independently measured, as well as the intensity V-n(f) and the phase F-n(f) (f being the chopping frequency) for a given A of the saturation part of the PPES spectrum. Equations of both the intensity and the phase of the PPES signal, taking into account the thermal and the optical characteristics of the PAN films and the pyroelectric detector, were used to fit the experimental results. From the fittings we obtained, with great accuracy, the values of thermal conductivity k and thermal diffusivity coefficient a of PAN films of different doping degrees. It was observed that, in contrast with the strong doping-dependence of the electrical conductivity, the thermal parameters of PAN films remained practically unchanged under doping. This apparent discrepancy is explained by the granular metal model of doped PAN. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to investigate emeraldine base polyaniline films. The magnetic susceptibility presented a Curie (localized spins)-Pauli (delocalized spins) transition at 240 K, when we also observed a transition in the dependence of the g factor with temperature (T). Peak-to-peak linewidth decreases with increasing temperature, reflecting that motional narrowing limits the hyperfine and dipolar broadening in this polymer. EDMR spectra could only be observed above 250 K in accordance to EPR results. Surface and bulk transport could be separated and their analysis reflected the effect of magnetic interaction with oxygen. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. The electroactivity of polyaniline was extended to pH = 14 alkaline media by preparation of a novel electrostatic interaction conductive hybrid from water-borne conductive polyaniline and silica network containing carboxyl groups via sol-gel process. In addition, the obtained conductive polyaniline hybrid film displayed very low conductivity threshold percolation and demonstrated excellent stability upon cycling.

Light emitting polymers (LEP) have drawn considerable attention because of their numerous potential applications in the field of optoelectronic devices. Till date, a large number of organic molecules and polymers have been designed and devices fabricated based on these materials. Optoelectronic devices like polymer light emitting diodes (PLED) have attracted wide-spread research attention owing to their superior properties like flexibility, lower operational power, colour tunability and possibility of obtaining large area coatings. PLEDs can be utilized for the fabrication of flat panel displays and as replacements for incandescent lamps. The internal efficiency of the LEDs mainly depends on the electroluminescent efficiency of the emissive polymer such as quantum efficiency, luminance-voltage profile of LED and the balanced injection of electrons and holes. Poly (p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and regio-regular polythiophenes are interesting electro-active polymers which exhibit good electrical conductivity, electroluminescent activity and high film-forming properties. A combination of Red, Green and Blue emitting polymers is necessary for the generation of white light which can replace the high energy consuming incandescent lamps. Most of these polymers show very low solubility, stability and poor mechanical properties. Many of these light emitting polymers are based on conjugated extended chains of alternating phenyl and vinyl units. The intra-chain or inter-chain interactions within these polymer chains can change the emitted colour. Therefore an effective way of synthesizing polymers with reduced π-stacking, high solubility, high thermal stability and high light-emitting efficiency is still a challenge for chemists. New copolymers have to be effectively designed so as to solve these issues. Hence, in the present work, the suitability of a few novel copolymers with very high thermal stability, excellent solubility, intense light emission (blue, cyan and green) and high glass transition temperatures have been investigated to be used as emissive layers for polymer light emitting diodes.

The existence of conducting islands in polyaniline films has long been proposed in the literature, which would be consistent with conducting mechanisms based on hopping. Obtaining direct evidence of conducting islands, however, is not straightforward. In this paper, conducting islands were visualized in poly(o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA) films prepared at low pH, using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and atomic force spectroscopy (AFS). The size of the islands varied between 67 and 470 angstrom for a pH=3.0, with a larger average being obtained with AFS, probably due to the finite size effect of the atomic force microscopy tip. In AFS, the conducting islands were denoted by regions with repulsive forces due to the double-layer forces. On the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for POEA in the powder form, we infer that the conducting islands are crystalline, and therefore a POEA film is believed to consist of conducting islands dispersed in an insulating, amorphous matrix. From conductivity measurements we inferred the charge transport to be governed by a typical quasi-one dimensional variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism.

Photopyroelectric (PPE) spectroscopy, in the 350-1,075 nm wavelength range, was used to study the optical properties of electropolymerized melanin films on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. The PPE intensity signal as a function of the wavelength lambda, V (n)(lambda) and its phase F (n)(lambda) were independently measured. Using the PPE signal intensity and the thermal and optical properties of the pyroelectric detector, we were able to calculate the optical absorption coefficient beta of melanin in the solid-state. We believe this to be the first such measurement of its kind on this material. Additionally, we found an optical gap in these melanin films at 1.70 eV.

A phosphopolyoxomolybdate (P2Mo18) doped polypyrrole (PPy) modified electrode was prepared in aqueous solution by a one-step method. During the polymerization of PPy, P2Mo18 acted as both catalyst and dopant. The electrochemical behavior of the PPy/P2Mo18 modified electrode before and after the overoxidation of PPy was investigated. Both of these showed a catalytic effect toward bromate. The PPy/P2Mo18 composite film was characterized by chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, the rotating disk electrode technique, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Polyaniline (PANI) was cathodically synthesized at an evaporated gold electrode using an in situ electrogenerated intermediate as oxidant during reduction of the dissolved oxygen. The obtained PANI layer showed an electrochemical response similar to that synthesized by the conventionally anodic polymerization, and the average rate for the growth of PANI layer at polycrystalline gold electrode was 1.59 nm h(-1), while that at the Au (111) electrode was 4.93 nm h(-1). Based on these results, the thickness of the resulted layer can be easily controlled at molecular level for potential nanodevice applications. The obtained PANI layer showed morphology from an island-like nanostructure to an ultrathin film, depending on the crystal orientation of the electrode used.

The combination of electrochemistry with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been used to characterize the growth of polyaniline (PAn) on a gold electrode surface during potential cycling. Potential-modulated SPR characteristics of the PAn film were also revealed. The potential switch between the oxidized and reduced states of PAn can lead to a large change of SPR response due to the variation in the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of PAn film resulting from the transition of the film in conductivity. The redox transition of the PAn film during potential cycling is very profitable to the SPR measurements. Two modes of SPR measurement, SPR angular scan (R-theta) and the time evolution of the reflectivity change at a fixed angle (R-t), were displayed to study the growth process of the PAn film. The angle shift of the resonance minimum recorded at each cathodic limit of cyclic potential scanning allows for the unambiguous measurement of the film growth. During cyclic potential scanning, the R-t curve was repeatedly modulated with the direction of the potential ramp as a result of the redox switch of the PAn film, and the amplitude of potential-modulated reflectivity change was well correlated with the cyclic number. The time differential of the R-t curve permits continuous monitoring of the film growth process. These results illustrate that the combined technique is suitable for studying the electropolymerization process of a conducting polymer.

In this paper, the structures and properties of the neutral and doped blends of poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structures and morphologies of the blends, and conductivity was also measured. It was found that separate crystallizations occur between P3DDT and LDPE. When the amount of P3DDT is small in the blend, it has the effect of a nucleation reagent and has some influence on the crystal structure. After doping, the interaction force between the molecular chains increases, and leads to a more compact packing and a more uniform dispersion in morphology. Through blending, the thermal stability of pure component could be greatly improved, especially when the P3DDT content is 5 wt %. The conductivity measurements indicate that the conductivity increases with the increase of the P3DDT composition and doping time.

A novel organic-inorganic composite film was formed by attaching Keegin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404- (devoted briefly as SiW12), on a glassy carbon electrode derivatized by 4-aminophenyl group. The composite film has an ionic bonding character between SiW12 and the surface amino group, which greatly improves the Blm stability and exhibits a more reversible electrochemical behavior. The modified electrode offers an excellent and stable electrocatalytic response for the reduction of nitrite. Possible mechanism was provided for the reaction of nitrite with SiW12O404-/aminophenyl composite film.
