A reversible electrochromic effect accompanying domain-inversion during the electrical poling process in LiNbO3: Ru: Fe crystals at room temperature has been observed. In electrode area, both electrochromism and domain-inversion occur alternately, and electrochromism is also reversible during back-switch poling, which is experimentally verified and whose mechanism is briefly explained using a microstructure ferroelectric model. In addition, because of the enhancing elcctrochromic effect, different from the undoped LiNbO3 crystals, the coercive riled (21.0 kV/mm or so) measured in LiNbO3: Ru: Fe is lower than its breakdown field, thus providing a possible new technique for realizing the domain-inversion by constant electric field rather than a pulsed one.

This article reports systematic results of corona poling measurements obtained on biaxially stretched polyvinylidene fluoride films charged in dry air. Charging was performed using the constant current corona triode. The dependence of the poling process on the sample thickness, charging current, and successive charging processes was investigated. Phase transitions from alpha to delta and to beta phases were observed when virgin samples were corona charged. The thermal pulse technique showed that the polarization profiles during charging can be made consistently almost uniform and that the ferroelectric reorientation can be associated with the rising plateau region displayed on potential buildup curves. Electrochromic phenomena accompanying the ferroelectric domain inversion in congruent RuO2-doped z-cut LiNbO3 crystals at room temperature are observed in experiments. During the electric poling process, the electrochromism accompanies the ferroelectric domain inversion simultaneously in the same poled area. The electrochromism is completely reversible when the domain is inverted from the reverse direction. The influences of electric field and annealing conditions on domain inversion and electrochromism are also discussed. We propose the reasonable assumption that charge redistribution within the crystal structure caused by domain inversion is the source for electrochemically oxidation and reduction of Ru ion to produce the electrochromic effect. In addition, different from the undoped LiNbO3 crystals, the breakdown field (> 25.0 kV/mm) is higher than the coercive (21.0 kV/mm) measured in LiNbO3:Ru:Fe, which proves a possible new technique to realize domain-inversion by constant electric field rather than pulsed one. Ferroelectric ceramic particles based on lead titanate zirconate (PZT) were dispersed in a polymer matrix based on castor oil. After the poling process, the pyroelectric activity of this composite was measured using a direct method in which a linear heating rate was applied to the pre-poled samples. The pyroelectric coefficient at 343 K is comparable with that of a PZT-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite and significantly higher than that of PVDF. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Composite films made of lead zirconate titanate ceramic particles coated with polyaniline and poly(vinylidene fluoride) - PZT-PAni/PVDF were produced by hot pressing the powder mixtures in the desired ceramic volume fraction. The ceramic particles were coated during the polyaniline synthesis and the conductivity of the conductor polymer was controlled by different degrees of protonation. Composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ac and dc electrical measurements, the longitudinal d33 piezo coefficient and the photopyroelectric response. Results showed that the presence of PAni increased the dielectric permittivity of the composite and allowed better efficiency in the poling process, which increased the piezo- and pyroelectric activities of the composite film and reduced both the poling time and the poling electric field. The thermal sensing of the material was also analyzed, showing that this composite can be used as pyroelectric sensor. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) refers to the procedure of assessing the structure conditions continuously so it is an alternative to conventional nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques [1]. With the growing developments in sensor technology acoustic emission (AE) technology has been attracting attention in SHM applications. AE are characterized by waves produced by the sudden internal stress redistribution caused by the changes in the internal structure, such as fatigue, crack growth, corrosion, etc. Piezoelectric materials such as Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) ceramic have been widely used as sensor due to its high electromechanical coupling factor and piezoelectric d coefficients. Because of the poor mechanical characteristic and the lack in the formability of the ceramic, polymer matrix-based piezoelectric composites have been studied in the last decade in order to obtain better properties in comparison with a single phase material. In this study a composite film made of polyurethane (PU) and PZT ceramic particles partially recovered with polyaniline (PAni) was characterized and used as sensor for AE detection. Preliminary results indicate that the presence of a semiconductor polymer (PAni) recovering the ceramic particles, make the poling process easier and less time consuming. Also, it is possible to observe that there is a great potential to use such type of composite as sensor for structure health monitoring.

The effects of various processing conditions, like annealing, poling, mechanical rolling and their combinations, on the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PVDF poly(vinylidene fluoride)] were systematically studied in this work. Further, the effect of processing sequence on the structure and properties was investigated. While all the processing conditions adopted here resulted in phase transformation of the alpha- to electroactive beta-polymorph in PVDF, the fraction of beta-phase developed was observed to be strongly contingent on the adopted process. The transformation of alpha- to electroactive beta-polymorph was determined by X-ray diffraction and FTIR. The neat PVDF showed only beta-phase, whereas mechanically rolled samples exhibited the highest ca. 85% beta-phase in PVDF. Both the permittivity and the loss tangent decreased in the samples which had undergone different processing conditions. The polarization-electric field (P-E) loops for all the samples were evaluated. Interestingly, the energy density, estimated from the electrical displacement-electric field (D-E) loops, was observed to be highest for the poled samples which were initially rolled. The results indicate that various processing conditions can influence the dielectric and the ferroelectric properties differently.

Recently, piezoelectric cellular polypropylene (PP) was proposed as a new type of quasi-ferroelectric. The observed hysteresis of the charge density as a function of the electric field could be explained as field-dependent charging inside the gas-filled voids. Interestingly enough, the measurable poling behavior of the macroscopic dipoles formed by charges that are trapped at the internal void surfaces is phenomenologically completely identical to the cooperative poling behavior of microscopic molecular dipoles in ferroelectric polymers. Therefore, it can be assumed that charge separation (or charge redistribution) and subsequent trapping in cellular PP is a rather fast switching process. In order to examine the poling dynamics, we developed an experimental setup for pulsed poling. High-voltage pulses with a duration of 45 μs (FWHM) were applied in direct contact to two-side metallized cellular PP films. The pulsed poling yields piezoelectricity in the cellular PP. We study and discuss the dependence of the resulting piezoelectricity on the poling field. We also characterize the charge separation during application of higher electric poling fields of up to -10 kV in direct contact to the two-side metallized films for longer times.

The α → β phase transformation of PVDF through the stretching process at different temperatures was investigated. The optimum stretching conditions were studied and characterised by infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The maximum β-phase content was achieved at 80°C and a stretch ratio of 5. These samples were poled at several electric fields by the corona charge method. The effect of the electric field on the phase transformation was studied by infrared spectroscopy.
