We provide a detailed expression of the vibrational potential for the lattice dynamics of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT's) satisfying the requirements of the exact rigid translational as well as rotational symmetries, which is a nontrivial generalization of the valence force model for the planar graphene sheet. With the model, the low-frequency behavior of the dispersion of the acoustic modes as well as the flexure mode can be precisely calculated. Based upon a comprehensive chiral symmetry analysis, the calculated mode frequencies (including all the Raman- and infrared-active modes), velocities of acoustic modes, and the polarization vectors are systematically fitted in terms of the chiral angle and radius, where the restrictions of various symmetry operations of SWCNT's are fulfilled.

Afin de mieux comprendre l'évolution des étoiles jeunes, nous avons utilisé un code Monte Carlo simulant leur environnement afin d'étudier une nouvelle distribution chez les étoiles Herbig Ae/Be et pour reproduire des cartes d'intensité et de polarisation linéaire obtenues au télescope Canada-France-Hawaii (TCFH) en novembre 2003. Le code datant de la fin des années 80, nous avons dû non seulement le corriger, mais aussi ajouter quelques éléments afin de tenir compte des dernières avancées dans le domaine de la polarisation provenant du milieu circumstellaire. Les étoiles à l'étude étant jeunes (moins de quelques millions d'années), leur voisinage est toujours constitué de grains de poussière mélangés avec du gaz. Selon leur âge, nous retrouvons cette poussière sous différentes structures soit, par exemple, par un disque entouré d'une enveloppe (objets jeunes de classe I) ou par un simple disque (objets de classe II et III). Selon la structure que prend la poussière, les cartes de polarisation et d'intensité qui en résultent vont changer. Nous allons discuter de cette variation des cartes de polarisation selon la distribution de poussière. Suite aux modifications apportées au code, il a fallu s'assurer que celui-ci fonctionne bien. Pour ce faire, nous avons mis au point quelques critères qui nous assurent, s'ils sont satisfaits, que le code Monte Carlo produit de bons résultats. Après avoir validé le code, il est maintenant possible de l'utiliser aux fins d'avancer le domaine de la polarisation. En effet, Dullemond et al.(2001) proposent une nouvelle distribution de grain autour des étoiles Herbig Ae/Be afin de mieux expliquer leur distribution d'énergie spectrale. Par contre, qu'en est-il des cartes de polarisation résultantes? C'est sur cette question que nous nous sommes arrêtés. Par la suite, nous avons essayé de reproduire du mieux possible, tenant compte des limitations du code, les cartes de polarisation obtenues au TCFH. Nous avons étudié en détail les données de R Mon (résultats qui seront présentés sous forme d'article pour fin de publication) et de V376 Cas. De plus, notre étude de V376 Cas nous a permis d'amener des conclusions sur les processus causant les vecteurs parallèles aux disques des étoiles jeunes.

Trapped degenerate dipolar Bose and Fermi gases of the cylindrical symmetry with the polarization vector along the symmetry axis are only stable for the strength of dipolar interaction below a critical value. In the case of bosons, the stability of such a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is investigated for different strengths of contact and dipolar interactions using a variational approximation and a numerical solution of a mean-field model. In the disc shape, with the polarization vector perpendicular to the plane of the disc, the atoms experience an overall dipolar repulsion and this fact should contribute to the stability. However, a complete numerical solution of the dynamics leads to the collapse of a strongly disc-shaped dipolar BEC due to the long-range anisotropic dipolar interaction. In the case of fermions, the stability of a trapped single-component degenerate dipolar Fermi gas is studied including the Hartree-Fock exchange and Brueckner-Goldstone correlation energies in the local-density approximation valid for a large number of atoms. Estimates for the maximum allowed number of polar Bose and Fermi molecules in the BEC and degenerate Fermi gas are given. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Neste trabalho é apresentada uma análise do esquema de inversão linear para a estimativa de anisotropia na vizinhança de um receptor situado em um poço a partir de da componente vertical do vetor de vagarosidade e do vetor de polarização de ondas P medidops em experimentos de VSP walkaway multiazimutal. Independente do meio acima do geofone (homogêneo ou heterogêneo) e da forma do poço (pode ser direcional ou curvado, vertical e inclinado), a inversão é feita a partir de uma aproximação de primeira ordem em torno de um meio isotrópico de referência. O esquma da inversão é analisado considerando fatores como: o nível de ruído nos dados, o tipo de onda P, o grau de anisotropia do meio, a escolha dos parâmetros no meio isotrópico de referência e grau de heterogeneidade do meio. Os resultados são apresentados.

Esta dissertação apresenta um método para estimar a orientação de fratura de um meio partindo do pressuposto que este se comporta efetivamente como um meio transversalmente isotrópico (TI). Desta forma, a orientação de fratura é obtida a partir da estimativa do eixo de simetria de um meio TI. Esta estimativa é obtida a partir dos vetores de vagarosidade e polarização de ondas qP medidos em experimentos VSP Walkaway. O processo de inversão é baseado em equações linearizadas dos vetores de vagarosidade e polarização de ondas qP e os parâmetros fracamente anisotrópicos do meio. São apresentados testes numéricos, em que a sensibilidade a fatores como grau de anisotropia, geometria do levantamento, tipo de onda utilizado e nível de ruído são analisados. São também apresentados os resultados para um conjunto de dados reais.

Aims. Our goal is to study the circumstellar environment associated with each component of the wide intermediate-mass pre-main sequence binary system PDS 144 using broadband polarimetry. Methods. We present near-infrared (NIR) linear polarimetric observations of PDS 144 gathered with the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter along with the CamIV infrared camera at the Observatorio do Pico dos Dias (OPD). In addition, we re-analyzed OPD archive optical polarization to separate the binary and estimate the interstellar polarization using foreground stars. Results. After discounting the interstellar component, we found that both stars of the binary system are intrinsically polarized. The polarization vectors at optical and NIR bands of both components are aligned with the local magnetic field and the jet axis. These findings indicate an interplay between the interstellar magnetic field and the formation of the binary system. We also found that the PDS 144N is less polarized than its southern companion in the optical. However, in the NIR PDS 144N is more polarized. Our polarization data can only be explained by high inclinations (i greater than or similar to 80 degrees) for the disks of both members. In particular, comparisons of our NIR data with young stellar objects disk models suggest predominantly small grains in the circumstellar environment of PDS 144N. In spite of the different grain types in each component, the infrared spectral indexes indicate a coeval system. We also found evidence of coplanarity between the disks.

Polarization properties of Gaussian laser beams are analyzed in a manner consistent with the Maxwell equations, and expressions are developed for all components of the electric and magnetic field vectors in the beam. It is shown that the transverse nature of the free electromagnetic field demands a nonzero transverse cross-polarization component in addition to the well-known component of the field vectors along the beam axis. The strength of these components in relation to the strength of the principal polarization component is established. It is further shown that the integrated strengths of these components over a transverse plane are invariants of the propagation process. It is suggested that cross- polarization measurement using a null detector can serve as a new method for accurate determination of the center of Gaussian laser beams.

The Mueller-Stokes formalism that governs conventional polarization optics is formulated for plane waves, and thus the only qualification one could require of a 4 x 4 real matrix M in order that it qualify to be the Mueller matrix of some physical system would be that M map Omega((pol)), the positive solid light cone of Stokes vectors, into itself. In view of growing current interest in the characterization of partially coherent partially polarized electromagnetic beams, there is a need to extend this formalism to such beams wherein the polarization and spatial dependence are generically inseparably intertwined. This inseparability brings in additional constraints that a pre-Mueller matrix M mapping Omega((pol)) into itself needs to meet in order to be an acceptable physical Mueller matrix. This paper reviews the fundamental concepts and basic theory of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers. It introduces a unified notation and methodology to link the various views and concepts in Jones space and Stokes space. The discussion includes the relation between Jones vectors and Stokes vectors, rotation matrices, the definition and representation of PMD vectors, the laws of infinitesimal rotation, and the rules for PMD vector concatenation.

Electromagnetic waves in suburban environment encounter multiple obstructions that shadow the signal. These waves are scattered and random in polarization. They take multiple paths that add as vectors at the portable device. Buildings have vertical and horizontal edges. Diffraction from edges has polarization dependent characteristics. In practical case, a signal transmitted from a vertically polarized high antenna will result in a significant fraction of total power in the horizontal polarization at the street level. Signal reception can be improved whenever there is a probability of receiving the signal in at least two independent ways or branches. The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method was applied to obtain the two and three-dimensional dyadic diffraction coefficients (soft and hard) of right-angle perfect electric conductor (PEC) wedges illuminated by a plane wave. The FDTD results were in good agreement with the asymptotic solutions obtained using Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD). Further, a material wedge replaced the PEC wedge and the dyadic diffraction coefficient for the same was obtained.

In this article we introduce the term “energy polarization” to explain the politics of energy market reform in the Russian Duma. Our model tests the impact of regional energy production, party cohesion and ideology, and electoral mandate on the energy policy decisions of the Duma deputies (oil, gas, and electricity bills and resolution proposals) between 1994 and 2003. We find a strong divide between Single-Member District (SMD) and Proportional Representation (PR) deputies High statistical significance of gas production is demonstrated throughout the three Duma terms and shows Gazprom's key position in the post-Soviet Russian economy. Oil production is variably significant in the two first Dumas, when the main legislative debates on oil privatization occur. There is no constant left–right continuum, which is consistent with the deputies' proclaimed party ideology. The pro- and anti-reform poles observed in our Poole-based single dimensional scale are not necessarily connected with liberal and state-oriented regulatory policies, respectively. Party switching is a solid indicator of Russia's polarized legislative dynamics when it comes to energy sector reform.

Factors that determine the epidemiology of Tobacco yellow dwarf virus (TbYDV), including alternative host plants and insect vector(s), were assessed over three consecutive growing seasons at four field sites in Northeastern Victoria in commercial tobacco growing properties. In addition, these factors were assessed for one growing season at three bean growing properties. Overall, 23 leafhopper species were identified at the 7 sites, with Orosius orientalis as the predominant leafhopper. Of the leafhoppers collected, only O. orientalis and Anzygina zealandica tested positive for TbYDV by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The population dynamics of O. orientalis was assessed using sweep net sampling over three growing seasons and a trimodal distribution was observed. Despite large numbers of O. orientalis occurring early in the growing season (September–October), TbYDV was only detected in these leafhoppers between late November and end of January. The peaks in the detection of TbYDV in O. orientalis correlated with the observation of disease symptoms in tobacco and bean and were associated with warmer temperatures and lower rainfall. Spatial and temporal distribution of vegetation at selected sites was determined using quadrat sampling. Of the 40 plant species identified, TbYDV was detected only in four dicotyledonous species, Amaranthus retroflexus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Nicotiana tabacum and Raphanus raphanistrum. The proportion of host and non-host availability for leafhoppers was associated with climatic conditions.
