Detailed knowledge of fast electron energy transport following the interaction of ultrashort intense laser pulses is a key subject for fast ignition. This is a problem relevant to many areas of laser-plasma physics with particular importance to fast ignition and X-ray secondary source development, necessary for the development of large-scale facilities such as HiPER and ELI. Operating two orthogonal crystal spectrometers set at Bragg angles close to 45 degrees determines the X-ray s- and p-polarization ratio. From this ratio, it is possible to infer the velocity distribution function of the fast electron beam within the dense plasma. We report on results of polarization measurements at high density for sulphur and nickel buried layer targets in the high intensity range of 10(19) - 10(21) Wcm(-2). We observe at 45 degrees the Ly-alpha doublet using two sets of orthogonal highly-orientated pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) crystals set in 1(st) order for sulphur and 3(rd) order for nickel.

OBJECTIVE: Orthogonal polarization spectral (OPS) imaging is used to assess mucosal microcirculation. We tested sensitivity and variability of OPS in the assessment of mesenteric blood flow (Q (sma)) reduction. SETTING: University Animal Laboratory. INTERVENTIONS: In eight pigs, Q (sma) was reduced in steps of 15% from baseline; five animals served as controls. Jejunal mucosal microcirculatory blood flow was recorded with OPS and laser Doppler flowmetry at each step. OPS data from each period were collected and randomly ordered. Samples from each period were individually chosen by two blinded investigators and quantified [capillary density (number of vessels crossing predefined lines), number of perfused villi] after agreement on the methodology. MEASUREMENT AND RESULTS: Interobserver coefficient of variation (CV) for capillary density from samples representing the same flow condition was 0.34 (0.04-1.41) and intraobserver CV was 0.10 (0.02-0.61). Only one investigator observed a decrease in capillary density [to 62% (48-82%) of baseline values at 45% Q (sma) reduction; P = 0.011], but comparisons with controls never revealed significant differences. In contrast, reduction in perfused villi was detected by both investigators at 75% of mesenteric blood flow reduction. Laser Doppler flow revealed heterogeneous microcirculatory perfusion. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of capillary density did not reveal differences between animals with and without Q (sma) reduction, and evaluation of perfused villi revealed blood flow reduction only when Q (sma) was very low. Potential explanations are blood flow redistribution and heterogeneity, and suboptimal contrast of OPS images. Despite agreement on the method of analysis, interobserver differences in the quantification of vessel density on gut mucosa using OPS are high.

The detailed knowledge of fast electron energy transport following interaction with high-intensity, ultra-short laser pulses is a key area for secondary source generation for ELI. We demonstrate polarization spectroscopy at laser intensities up to 10(21) Wcm(-2). This is significant as it suggests that in situ emission spectroscopy may be used as an effective probe of fast electron velocity distributions in regimes relevant to electron transport in solid targets. Ly-alpha doublet emission of nickel (Z = 28) and sulphur (Z = 16) is observed to measure the degree of polarization from the Ly-alpha(1) emission. Ly-alpha(2) emission is unpolarized, and as such acts as a calibration source between spectrometers. The measured ratio of the X-ray sigma- and pi-polarization allows the possibility to infer the velocity distribution function of the fast electron beam.

We propose a scheme for the detection of quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard (BH) and 1D Extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, using the nondemolition measurement technique of quantum polarization spectroscopy. We use collective measurements of the effective total angular momentum of a particular spatial mode to characterize the Mott insulator to superfluid phase transition in the BH model and the transition to a density wave state in the EBH model. We extend the application of collective measurements to the ground states at various deformations of a superlattice potential.

We present a new method of laser frequency locking in which the feedback signal is directly proportional to the detuning from an atomic transition, even at detunings many times the natural linewidth of the transition. Our method is a form of sub-Doppler polarization spectroscopy, based on measuring two Stokes parameters (I-2 and I-3) of light transmitted through a vapor cell. It extends the linear capture range of the lock loop by as much as an order of magnitude and provides frequency discrimination equivalent to or better than those of other commonly used locking techniques. The modified polarization spectroscopy method was applied for determination of angular momenta of autoionizing states of Pu in multistep resonance ionization processes. In comparison with the known one, our method does not require circular polarization at all, only linear polarizations are needed. This simplicity was reached using a three-dimensional excitation geometry. Angular momenta of nine new autoionizing 242Pu states were determined. The method suggested could be applied for efficiency improvement in multistep RIMS applications as well as for the odd-even isotope separation for elements with a J = 0 ground state (Pu, Yb, Sm etc.).

The influence of band bending and polarization on the valence band offset measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is discussed, and a modification method based on a modified self-consistent calculation is proposed to eliminate the influence and thus increasing the precision of XPS. Considering the spontaneous polarization at the surfaces and interfaces and the different positions of Fermi levels at the surfaces, we compare the energy band structures of Al/Ga-polar AlN/GaN and N-polar GaN/AlN heterojunctions, and give corrections to the XPS-measured valence band offsets. Other AlN/GaN heterojunctions and the piezoelectric polarization are also introduced and discussed in this paper.

The polarization of radiation by scattering on an atom embedded in combined external quadrupole electric and uniform magnetic fields is studied theoretically. Limiting cases of scattering under Zeeman effect, and Hanle effect in weak magnetic fields are discussed. The theory is general enough to handle scattering in intermediate magnetic fields (Hanle-Zeeman effect) and for arbitrary orientation of magnetic field. The quadrupolar electric field produces asymmetric line shifts, and causes interesting level-crossing phenomena either in the absence of an ambient magnetic field, or in its presence. It is shown that the quadrupolar electric field produces an additional depolarization in the Q/I profiles and rotation of the plane of polarization in the U/I profile over and above that arising from magnetic field itself. This characteristic may have a diagnostic potential to detect steady-state and time-varying electric fields that surround radiating atoms in solar atmospheric layers. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The conformation and stability of pearl millet prolamin (pennisetin) were examined by using circular dichroism and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The far UV spectrum of pennisetin in 70% (v/v) aqueous ethanol showed the presence of predominant alpha-helical structure and its occurrence in the alpha + beta class of protein. The far and near UV spectra of pennisetin in ethanol: trifluoroethanol also supported this observation. However pennisetin showed the presence of some helical structure in 8 M urea which is known to be a highly unordered structure forming solvent. A decrease in alpha helical content of native pennisetin was observed with rise in temperature from 5-75-degrees-C and this effect of temperature was found to be reversible. A C-13 NMR spectrum of pennisetin in 70% ethanol suggested a high degree of molecular mobility in ethanol. Comparison of the cross polarization spectrum with the single pulse excitation spectrum suggested pennisetin to be a heterogeneous protein.

Lanthanum doped lead titanate (PLT) thin films were identified as the most potential candidates for the pyroelectric and memory applications. PLT thin films were deposited on Pt coated Si by excimer laser ablation technique. The polarization behavior of PLT thin films has been studied over a temperature range of 300 K to 550 K. A universal power law relation was brought into picture to explain the frequency dependence of ac conductivity. At higher frequency region ac conductivity of PLT thin films become temperature independent. The temperature dependence of ac conductivity and the relaxation time is analyzed in detail. The activation energy obtained from the ac conductivity was attributed to the shallow trap controlled space charge conduction in the bulk of the sample. The impedance analysis for PLT thin films were also performed to get insight of the microscopic parameters, like grain, grain boundary, and film-electrode interface etc. The imaginary component of impedance Z" exhibited different peak maxima at different temperatures. Different types of mechanisms were analyzed in detail to explain the dielectric relaxation behavior in the PLT thin films.

Unambiguous evidence for the engagement of CF3 group in N-H center dot center dot center dot F-C hydrogen bond in a low polarity solvent, the first observation of its kind, is reported. The presence of such weak molecular interactions in the solution state is convincingly established by one and two-dimensional H-1, F-19, and natural abundant N-15 NMR spectroscopic studies. The strong and direct evidence is derived by the observation of through-space couplings, such as, (1h)J(FH), (1h)J(FN), and (2h)J(FF), where the spin polarization is transmitted through hydrogen bond. In an interesting example of a molecule containing two CF3 groups getting simultaneously involved in hydrogen bond, where hydrogen bond mediated couplings are not reflected in the NMR spectrum, F-19-F-19 NOESY experiment yielded confirmatory evidence. Significant deviations in the strengths of (1)J(NH), variable temperature, and the solvent induced perturbations yielded additional support. The NMR results are corroborated by both DFT calculations and MD simulations, where the quantitative information on different ways of involvement of fluorine in two and three centered hydrogen bonds, their percentage of occurrences, and geometries have been obtained. The hydrogen bond interaction energies have also been calculated.

The electronic structure of Nd1-xYxMnO3 (x-0-0.5) is studied using x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the Mn K-edge along with the DFT-based LSDA+U and real space cluster calculations. The main edge of the spectra does not show any variation with doping. The pre-edge shows two distinct features which appear well-separated with doping. The intensity of the pre-edge decreases with doping. The theoretical XANES were calculated using real space multiple scattering methods which reproduces the entire experimental spectra at the main edge as well as the pre-edge. Density functional theory calculations are used to obtain the Mn 4p, Mn 3d and O 2p density of states. For x=0, the site-projected density of states at 1.7 eV above Fermi energy shows a singular peak of unoccupied e(g) (spin-up) states which is hybridized Mn 4p and O 2p states. For x=0.5, this feature develops at a higher energy and is highly delocalized and overlaps with the 3d spin-down states which changes the pre-edge intensity. The Mn 4p DOS for both compositions, show considerable difference between the individual p(x), p(y) and p(z)), states. For x=0.5, there is a considerable change in the 4p orbital polarization suggesting changes in the Jahn-Teller effect with doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
