Today cloud computing is the next stage in development information-oriented society in field of information technologies. Great attention is paid to cloud computing in general, but the lack of scientific consideration to components brings to the problem, that not all aspects are well examined. This thesis is an attempt to consider Platform as a Service (a technology of providing development environment through the Internet) from divergent angles. Technical characteristics, costs, time, estimation of effectiveness, risks, strategies that can be applied, migration process, advantages and disadvantages and the future of the approach are examined to get the overall picture of cloud platforms. During the work literature study was used to examine Platform as a Service, characteristics of existent cloud platforms were explored and a model of a typical software development company was developed to create a scenario of migration to cloud technologies. The research showed that besides all virtues in reducing costs and time, cloud platforms have some significant obstacles in adoption. Privacy, security and insufficient legislation impede the concept to be widespread.

Il Cloud Computing è una realtà sempre più diffusa e discussa nel nostro periodo storico, ma probabilmente non è ancora chiaro a tutti di cosa si tratta e le potenzialità che possiede. Infatti, non esiste ancora una definizione univoca e condivisa e questo può creare confusione. Oggi le grandi compagnie nella comunità informatica spingono sempre di più per affermare i servizi Cloud a livello mondiale, non solo per le aziende del settore, ma anche per tutte le altre. Ed è così che le aziende di tutto il mondo si muovono per imparare e adottare questa nuova tecnologia, per spostare i loro centri dati e le loro applicazioni nel Cloud. Ma dove e quando nasce il Cloud Computing? Quali sono realmente i benefici per le aziende che adottano questa tecnologia? Questo è l'obiettivo della mia tesi: cercare di far chiarezza sulla sua definizione, indagare sulla sua nascita e fare un quadro economico del suo sviluppo, analizzando i benefici per le aziende e le opportunità offerte. Come caso di studio ho scelto la piattaforma Cloud Foundry perchè in questo momento è in forte espansione e sta facendo un grosso lavoro per cercare di rendere il suo prodotto uno standard per il Cloud Computing. Come esempio particolare di piattaforma basata su Cloud Foundry si parlerà di Bluemix, la piattaforma Cloud offerta da IBM, una delle più grandi aziende nel settore informatico.

Software development teams increasingly adopt platform-as-a-service (PaaS), i.e., cloud services that make software development infrastructure available over the internet. Yet, empirical evidence of whether and how software development work changes with the use of PaaS is difficult to find. We performed a grounded-theory study to explore the affordances of PaaS for software development teams. We find that PaaS enables software development teams to enforce uniformity, to exploit knowledge embedded in technology, to enhance agility, and to enrich jobs. These affordances do not arise in a vacuum. Their emergence is closely interwoven with changes in methodologies, roles, and norms that give rise to self-organizing, loosely coupled teams. Our study provides rich descriptions of PaaS-based software development and an emerging theory of affordances of PaaS for software development teams.

One of the main challenges facing next generation Cloud platform services is the need to simultaneously achieve ease of programming, consistency, and high scalability. Big Data applications have so far focused on batch processing. The next step for Big Data is to move to the online world. This shift will raise the requirements for transactional guarantees. CumuloNimbo is a new EC-funded project led by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) that addresses these issues via a highly scalable multi-tier transactional platform as a service (PaaS) that bridges the gap between OLTP and Big Data applications.

Palvelukehitystoiminta sitoo huomattavan määrän resursseja ja on pitkäkestoista toimintaa. Innovatiivisuuteen tähtäämällä ja systemaattisella tuotekehitystyöllä yritys parantaa jatkuvuutta omassa liiketoiminnassaan. Alusta-ajattelu tuo uuden ulottuvuuden tuotteiden ja palveluiden kehitykseen. Alustan kehittäminen tukemaan tuote- ja palvelukehitystoimintaa ja yksinkertaistamaan tuote/palvelurakenteita antaa yrityksissä lisäpotentiaalia esimerkiksi lyhentyneiden kehitysaikojen, paremman kompleksisuuden hallinnan ja kustannustehokkuuden nousun myötä. Toimintojen tehostuminen yritystasolla saa aikaan mahdollisuuksien lisääntymisen nykyisillä liiketoimintasektoreilla. Palvelualustan kehityksellä päästään palvelurakenteen mallintamisen kautta parempaan liiketoiminnan hallitsemiseen ja systemaattisempaan tuotekehityksen läpivientiin. Palvelualustan yhtenä tärkeimpänä hyötynä on, että palvelun rakenteellisuus saadaan kuvattua alustaan. Lisäksi on tärkeää määritellä vastuutukset alustan kehityksessä, sekä pystyä mallintamaan informaation kulku (rajapinnat) prosesseissa.

The paper discusses new business models of transmission of television programs in the context of definitions of broadcasting and retransmission. Typically the whole process of supplying content to the end user has two stages: a media service provider supplies a signal assigned to a given TV channel to the cable operators and satellite DTH platform operators (dedicated transmission), and cable operators and satellite DTH platform operators transmit this signal to end users. In each stage the signals are encoded and are not available for the general public without the intervention of cable/platform operators. The services relating to the supply and transmission of the content are operated by different business entities: each earns money separately and each uses the content protected by copyright. We should determine how to define the actions of the entity supplying the signal with the TV program directly to the cable/digital platform operator and the actions of the entity providing the end user with the signal. The author criticizes the approach presented in the Chellomedia and Norma rulings, arguing that they lead to a significant level of legal uncertainty, and poses the basic questions concerning the notion of “public” in copyright.

El presente proyecto consiste en una introducción al "cloud computing" y un estudio en profundidad de las herramientas OpenNebula, dentro del modelo IaaS (Infraestructure as a Service), y Hadoop, dentro del modelo PaaS (Platform as a Service). El trabajo también incluye la instalación, integración, configuración y puesta en marcha de una plataforma "cloud computing" utilizando OpenNebula y Hadoop con el objetivo de aplicar los conceptos teóricos en una solución real dentro de un entorno de laboratorio que puede ser extrapolable a una instalación real.

Cloud computing and its three facets (Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)) are terms that denote new developments in the software industry. In particular, PaaS solutions, also referred to as cloud platforms, are changing the way software is being produced, distributed, consumed, and priced. Software vendors have started considering cloud platforms as a strategic option but are battling to redefine their offerings to embrace PaaS. In contrast to SaaS and IaaS, PaaS allows for value co-creation with partners to develop complementary components and applications. It thus requires multisided business models that bring together two or more distinct customer segments. Understanding how to design PaaS business models to establish a flourishing ecosystem is crucial for software vendors. This doctoral thesis aims to address this issue in three interrelated research parts. First, based on case study research, the thesis provides a deeper understanding of current PaaS business models and their evolution. Second, it analyses and simulates consumers' preferences regarding PaaS business models, using a conjoint approach to find out what determines the choice of cloud platforms. Finally, building on the previous research outcomes, the third part introduces a design theory for the emerging class of PaaS business models, which is grounded on an extensive action design research study with a large European software vendor. Understanding PaaS business models from a market as well as a consumer perspective will, together with the design theory, inform and guide decision makers in their business model innovation plans. It also closes gaps in the research related to PaaS business model design and more generally related to platform business models.

App Engine on lyhenne englanninkielisistä termeistä application, sovellus ja engine, moottori. Kyseessä on Google, Inc. -konsernin toteuttama kaupallinen palvelu, joka noudattaa pilvimallin tietojenkäsittelyn periaatteita ja mahdollistaa asiakkaan oman sovelluskehityksen. Järjestelmään on mahdollista ohjelmoida itse ideoitu palvelu Internet - verkon välityksellä käytettäväksi, joko yksityisesti tai julkisesti. Kyse on siis hajautetusta palvelinjärjestelmästä, jonka tarjoaa dynaamisesti kuormitukseen sopeutuvan sovellusalustan, jossa asiakas ei vuokraa virtuaalikoneita. Myös järjestelmän tarjoama tallennuskapasiteetti on saatavilla joustavasti. Itse kandidaatintyössä syvennytään yksityiskohtaisemmin sovelluksen toteuttamiseen palvelussa, rajoitteisiin ja soveltuvuuteen. Alussa käydään läpi pilvikäsite, joista monilla tietokoneiden käyttäjillä on epäselvä käsitys. Erilaisia kokonaisuuksia voidaan luoda erittäin monella tavalla, joista rajaamme käsittelyn kohteeksi toteuttamiskelpoiset yleiset ratkaisut.

The progresses of the Internet and telecommunications have been changing the concepts of Information Technology IT, especially with regard to outsourcing services, where organizations seek cost-cutting and a better focus on the business. Along with the development of that outsourcing, a new model named Cloud Computing (CC) evolved. It proposes to migrate to the Internet both data processing and information storing. Among the key points of Cloud Computing are included cost-cutting, benefits, risks and the IT paradigms changes. Nonetheless, the adoption of that model brings forth some difficulties to decision-making, by IT managers, mainly with regard to which solutions may go to the cloud, and which service providers are more appropriate to the Organization s reality. The research has as its overall aim to apply the AHP Method (Analytic Hierarchic Process) to decision-making in Cloud Computing. There to, the utilized methodology was the exploratory kind and a study of case applied to a nationwide organization (Federation of Industries of RN). The data collection was performed through two structured questionnaires answered electronically by IT technicians, and the company s Board of Directors. The analysis of the data was carried out in a qualitative and comparative way, and we utilized the software to AHP method called Web-Hipre. The results we obtained found the importance of applying the AHP method in decision-making towards the adoption of Cloud Computing, mainly because on the occasion the research was carried out the studied company already showed interest and necessity in adopting CC, considering the internal problems with infrastructure and availability of information that the company faces nowadays. The organization sought to adopt CC, however, it had doubt regarding the cloud model and which service provider would better meet their real necessities. The application of the AHP, then, worked as a guiding tool to the choice of the best alternative, which points out the Hybrid Cloud as the ideal choice to start off in Cloud Computing. Considering the following aspects: the layer of Infrastructure as a Service IaaS (Processing and Storage) must stay partly on the Public Cloud and partly in the Private Cloud; the layer of Platform as a Service PaaS (Software Developing and Testing) had preference for the Private Cloud, and the layer of Software as a Service - SaaS (Emails/Applications) divided into emails to the Public Cloud and applications to the Private Cloud. Uno dei temi più discussi ed interessanti nel mondo dell’informatica al giorno d’oggi è sicuramente il Cloud Computing. Nuove organizzazioni che offrono servizi di questo tipo stanno nascendo ovunque e molte aziende oggi desiderano imparare ad utilizzarli, migrando i loro centri di dati e le loro applicazioni nel Cloud. Ciò sta avvenendo anche grazie alla spinta sempre più forte che stanno imprimendo le grandi compagnie nella comunità informatica: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple e tante altre ancora parlano sempre più frequentemente di Cloud Computing e si stanno a loro volta ristrutturando profondamente per poter offrire servizi Cloud adeguandosi così a questo grande cambiamento che sta avvenendo nel settore dell’informatica. Tuttavia il grande movimento di energie, capitali, investimenti ed interesse che l’avvento del Cloud Computing sta causando non aiuta a comprendere in realtà che cosa esso sia, al punto tale che oggi non ne esiste ancora una definizione univoca e condivisa. La grande pressione inoltre che esso subisce da parte del mondo del mercato fa sì che molte delle sue più peculiari caratteristiche, dal punto di vista dell’ingegneria del software, vengano nascoste e soverchiate da altre sue proprietà, architetturalmente meno importanti, ma con un più grande impatto sul pubblico di potenziali clienti. L’obbiettivo che ci poniamo con questa tesi è quindi quello di esplorare il nascente mondo del Cloud Computing, cercando di comprenderne a fondo le principali caratteristiche architetturali e focalizzando l’attenzione in particolare sullo sviluppo di applicazioni in ambiente Cloud, processo che sotto alcuni aspetti si differenzia molto dallo sviluppo orientato ad ambienti più classici. La tesi è così strutturata: nel primo capitolo verrà fornita una panoramica sul Cloud Computing nella quale saranno date anche le prime definizioni e verranno esposti tutti i temi fondamentali sviluppati nei capitoli successivi. Il secondo capitolo costituisce un approfondimento su un argomento specifico, quello dei Cloud Operating System, componenti fondamentali che permettono di trasformare una qualunque infrastruttura informatica in un’infrastruttura Cloud. Essi verranno presentati anche per mezzo di molte analogie con i classici sistemi operativi desktop. Con il terzo capitolo ci si addentra più a fondo nel cuore del Cloud Computing, studiandone il livello chiamato Infrastructure as a Service tramite un esempio concreto di Cloud provider: Amazon, che fornisce i suoi servizi nel progetto Amazon Web Services. A questo punto, più volte nel corso della trattazione di vari temi saremo stati costretti ad affrontare le problematiche relative alla gestione di enormi moli di dati, che spesso sono il punto centrale di molte applicazioni Cloud. Ci è parso quindi importante approfondire questo argomento in un capitolo appositamente dedicato, il quarto, supportando anche in questo caso la trattazione teorica con un esempio concreto: BigTable, il sistema di Google per la gestione della memorizzazione di grandi quantità di dati. Dopo questo intermezzo, la trattazione procede risalendo lungo i livelli dell’architettura Cloud, ricalcando anche quella che è stata l’evoluzione temporale del Cloud Computing: nel quinto capitolo, dal livello Infrastructure as a Service si passa quindi a quello Platform as a Service, tramite lo studio dei servizi offerti da Google Cloud Platform. Il sesto capitolo costituisce invece il punto centrale della tesi, quello che ne soddisfa l’obbiettivo principale: esso contiene infatti uno studio approfondito sullo sviluppo di applicazioni orientate all’ambiente Cloud. Infine, il settimo capitolo si pone come un ponte verso possibili sviluppi futuri, analizzando quali sono i limiti principali delle tecnologie, dei modelli e dei linguaggi che oggi supportano il Cloud Computing. In esso viene proposto come possibile soluzione il modello ad attori; inoltre viene anche presentato il framework Orleans, che Microsoft sta sviluppando negli ultimi anni con lo scopo appunto di supportare lo sviluppo di applicazioni in ambiente Cloud.

Cloud computing has seen an impressive growth in recent years, with virtualization technologies being massively adopted to create IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) public and private solutions. Today, the interest is shifting towards the PaaS (Platform as a Service) model, which allows developers to abstract from the execution platform and focus only on the functionality. There are several public PaaS offerings available, but currently no private PaaS solution is ready for production environments. To fill this gap a new solution must be developed. In this paper we present a key element for enabling this model: a cloud repository based on the OSGi component model. The repository stores, manages, provisions and resolves the dependencies of PaaS software components and services. This repository can federate with other repositories located in the same or different clouds, both private and public. This way, dependencies can be fulfilled collaboratively, and new business models can be implemented.

La computación distribuida ha estado presente desde hace unos cuantos años, pero es quizás en la actualidad cuando está contando con una mayor repercusión. En los últimos años el modelo de computación en la nube (Cloud computing) ha ganado mucha popularidad, prueba de ello es la cantidad de productos existentes. Todo sistema informático requiere ser controlado a través de sistemas de monitorización que permiten conocer el estado del mismo, de tal manera que pueda ser gestionado fácilmente. Hoy en día la mayoría de los productos de monitorización existentes limitan a la hora de visualizar una representación real de la arquitectura de los sistemas a monitorizar, lo que puede dificultar la tarea de los administradores. Es decir, la visualización que proporcionan de la arquitectura del sistema, en muchos casos se ve influenciada por el diseño del sistema de visualización, lo que impide ver los niveles de la arquitectura y las relaciones entre estos. En este trabajo se presenta un sistema de monitorización para sistemas distribuidos o Cloud, que pretende dar solución a esta problemática, no limitando la representación de la arquitectura del sistema a monitorizar. El sistema está formado por: agentes, que se encargan de la tarea de recolección de las métricas del sistema monitorizado; un servidor, al que los agentes le envían las métricas para que las almacenen en una base de datos; y una aplicación web, a través de la que se visualiza toda la información. El sistema ha sido probado satisfactoriamente con la monitorización de CumuloNimbo, una plataforma como servicio (PaaS), que ofrece interfaz SQL y procesamiento transaccional altamente escalable sobre almacenes clave valor. Este trabajo describe la arquitectura del sistema de monitorización, y en concreto, el desarrollo de la principal contribución al sistema, la aplicación web. ---ABSTRACT---Distributed computing has been around for quite a long time, but now it is becoming more and more important. In the last few years, cloud computing, a branch of distributed computing has become very popular, as its different products in the market can prove. Every computing system requires to be controlled through monitoring systems to keep them functioning correctly. Currently, most of the monitoring systems in the market only provide a view of the architectures of the systems monitored, which in most cases do not permit having a real view of the system. This lack of vision can make administrators’ tasks really difficult. If they do not know the architecture perfectly, controlling the system based on the view that the monitoring system provides is extremely complicated. The project introduces a new monitoring system for distributed or Cloud systems, which shows the real architecture of the system. This new system is composed of several elements: agents, which collect the metrics of the monitored system; a server, which receives the metrics from the agents and saves them in a database; and a web application, which shows all the data collected in an easy way. The monitoring system has been tested successfully with Cumulonimbo. CumuloNimbo is a platform as a service (PaaS) which offers an SQL interface and a high-scalable transactional process. This platform works over key-value storage. This project describes the architecture of the monitoring system, especially, the development of the web application, which is the main contribution to the system.
