This study investigated the effect of an Argon-based atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) surface treatment operated chairside at atmospheric pressure conditions applied immediately prior to dental implant placement in a canine model. Surfaces investigated comprised: rough titanium surface (Ti) and rough titanium surface + Argon-based APP (Ti-Plasma). Surface energy was characterized by the Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble method and chemistry by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Six adult beagles dogs received two plateau-root form implants (n = 1 each surface) in each radii, providing implants that remained 1 and 3 weeks in vivo. Histometric parameters assessed were bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO). Statistical analysis was performed by Kruskall-Wallis (95% level of significance) and Dunn's post-hoc test. The XPS analysis showed peaks of Ti, C, and O for the Ti and Ti- Plasma surfaces. Both surfaces presented carbon primarily as hydrocarbon (C?C, C?H) with lower levels of oxidized carbon forms. The Ti-Plasma presented large increase in the Ti (+11%) and O (+16%) elements for the Ti- Plasma group along with a decrease of 23% in surface-adsorbed C content. At 1 week no difference was found in histometric parameters between groups. At 3 weeks significantly higher BIC (>300%) and mean BAFO (>30%) were observed for Ti-Plasma treated surfaces. From a morphologic standpoint, improved interaction between connective tissue was observed at 1 week, likely leading to more uniform and higher bone formation at 3 weeks for the Ti-Plasma treated implants was observed. Purpose: To evaluate the qualitative and quantitative differences on dental plaque formation on two different roughness titanium implant surfaces, i.e. machined and titanium plasma sprayed, as well as the amount of plaque removal by regular toothbrushing after 72-hour plaque accumulation. Methods: Eight systemically healthy subjects were recruited from the patient pool of a private dental practice. All patients underwent oral hygiene instruction and full mouth prophylaxis. Subsequently, maxillary casts from all patients were obtained and removable 0.7 mm-thick acetate stents without occlusal contact points were fabricated to support four titanium specimens of 4x2x2 mm divided into two groups (machined and plasma sprayed). Subjects were instructed to wear the stents for 72 hours, full time, removing them only during regular oral hygiene. Subsequently, the appliances were immediately repositioned and then the test side was brushed for 20 seconds. At the end of the 72-hour period, the stents were removed and prepared for microbiological analysis. Results: Both machined and plasma sprayed brushed surfaces presented statistically significant fewer bacteria than non-brushed surfaces. Similarly, regarding surface roughness, machined surfaces presented a total number of bacteria significantly smaller than those presented by plasma sprayed surfaces (P< 0.05). Statistically, the non-brushed machined turned surfaces presented a greater amount of Streptoccocus sp. when compared to the brushed machined surfaces. It was concluded that rough surfaces accumulated more dental plaque than polished surfaces. Both brushed surfaces presented less plaque accumulation, however, implant brushing was more effective on machined surfaces. (Am J Dent 2008;21:318-322).

The radio frequency (RF) plasma-modified surfaces of kaolinite were investigated by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) and deuteration techniques to determine the nature of RF plasma-induced surface functional groups, the altered sites in the lattice, and interaction mechanism between RF plasma and the surface of the kaolinite. It has been concluded that the RF plasma-induced infrared (IR) vibration absorption bands at 2805, 3010, and 3100 cm(-1) are attributable to the stretching vibration of hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups, and the band at 1407 cm(-1) is attributable to the bending vibration of (HO-)Al-O or (HO-)Si-O groupings with hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups. Structural alteration occurred on both the surface and subsurface region of the kaolinite during RF plasma treatment. Further structural alteration or adjustment was also observed on well-modified and well-deuterated kaolinite. There are two types of OD bands visible in the DRIFT spectra of this kaolinite, one type which decreased rapidly as a function of time in moist air, and the other which remained unchanged during the measurement. Furthermore, the appearance of broad IR bands at 3500-3100 cm(-1) as a result of deuteration is evidence of structural disturbance by RF plasma treatment lattice deuteration. An RF plasma-induced hydrogen bonding model on the surface of the kaolinite is proposed.

LDL aggregates when exposed to even moderate fluid mechanical stresses in the laboratory, yet its half-life in the circulation is 2-3 days, implying that little aggregation occurs. LDL may be protected from aggregation in vivo by components of plasma, or by a qualitative difference in flows. Previous studies have shown that HDL and albumin inhibit the aggregation induced by vortexing. Using a more reproducible method of inducing aggregation and assessing aggregation both spectrophotometrically and by sedimentation techniques, we showed that at physiological concentrations, albumin is the more effective inhibitor, and that aggregation is substantially but not completely inhibited in plasma. Heat denatured and fatty-acid-stripped albumin were more effective inhibitors than normal albumin, supporting the idea that hydrophobic interactions are involved. Aggregation of LDL in a model reproducing several aspects of flow in the circulation was 200-fold slower, but was still inhibited by HDL and albumin, suggesting similar mechanisms are involved. Within the sensitivity of our technique, LDL aggregation did not occur in plasma exposed to these flows.jlr Thus, as a result of the characteristics of blood flow and the inhibitory effects of plasma components, particularly albumin, LDL aggregation is unlikely to occur within the circulation.

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) process is a three dimensional surface modification method that is quite mature and well known to the surface engineering community nowadays, especially to those working in the field of plasma-materials interaction, aiming at both industrial and academic applications. More recently, deposition methods have been added to PIII, the PIII&D, opening possibilities of broader range of applications of these techniques. So, PIII&D is becoming a routine method of surface modification, with the advantage of pushing up the retained dose levels limited by the sputtering due to ion implantation. Therefore, well adherent, thick, three-dimensional films without stress are possible to be achieved, at relatively low cost, using PIII&D. In this paper, we will discuss about a few PIII and PIII&D experiments that have been performed recently to achieve surface improvements in different materials: 1 - high temperature nitrogen PIII in Ti6Al4V alloy in which a deep nitrogen rich treated layer resulted in surface improvements as increase of hardness, corrosion resistance and resistance to wear of the Ti alloy; 2 - nanostructures in ZnO films, obtained by PIII&D of vaporized & ionized Zn source; 3 - combined implantation and deposition of calcium for biomaterial activity of Ti alloy (PIII&D), allowing the growth of hydroxyapatite in a body solution; 4 - magnetron sputtering deposition of Cr that was enhanced by the glow discharge Ar plasma to allow implantation and deposition of Cr on SAE 1070 steel (PIII&D) resulting in surfaces with high resistance to corrosion; and 5 - implantation of nitrogen by ordinary PIII into this Cr film, which improved resistance to corrosion, while keeping the tribological properties as good as for the SAE 1070 steel surface. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The presence of environmental mycobacteria on surfaces in two public health institutions, namely a health center and a hospital in upstate São Paulo (Brazil), was identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction enzyme analysis (PRA). The possible sources of contamination by these microorganisms were evaluated, contributing to epidemiology studies. Methods: From June 2005 to June 2006, a total of 632 samples were collected from exposed surfaces, such as washbasins, drinking fountains, and other accessible sites, and the mycobacteria present in the samples were isolated and cultured. Results: Sixty-five mycobacteria were isolated from the 632 samples; 47 of which were detected in samples from the health center and 18 in samples collected from the hospital. The isolates were identified by DNA restriction patterns obtained by PRA, and potentially pathogenic species were found to be prevalent among the identified mycobacteria. This study shows that the PRA technique can be employed as a fast and easy method for identification of nontuberculous mycobacteria in public areas. Conclusions: The isolation of environmental mycobacteria from the two health institutions demonstrates that these surfaces are reservoirs of potentially pathogenic mycobacteria and indicates the need for continuous maintenance and monitoring. These data will add to the study of the epidemiology of these microorganisms.

Pure poly(lactide-co-glycolide) and polystyrene surfaces are not very suitable to support cell adhesion/ spreading owing to their hydrophobic nature and low surface energy. The interior surfaces of large porous 3D scaffolds were modified and activated using radio-frequency, low-pressure air plasma. An increase in the wettability of the surface was observed after exposure to air plasma, as indicated by the decrease in the contact angles of the wet porous system. The surface composition of the plasma-treated polymers was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. pH-dependent zeta-potential measurements confirm the presence of an increased number of functional groups. However, the plasma-treated surfaces have a less acidic character than the original polymer surfaces as seen by a shift in their isoelectric point. Zeta-potential, as well as contact angle measurements, on 3D scaffolds confirm that plasma treatment is a useful tool to modify the surface properties throughout the interior of large scaffolds. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The antimicrobial activity of atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma has been exhaustively characterised, however elucidation of the interactions between biomolecules produced and utilised by bacteria and short plasma exposures are required for optimisation and clinical translation of cold plasma technology. This study characterizes the effects of non-thermal plasma exposure on acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-dependent quorum sensing (QS). Plasma exposure of AHLs reduced the ability of such molecules to elicit a QS response in bacterial reporter strains in a dose-dependent manner. Short exposures (30-60 s) produce of a series of secondary compounds capable of eliciting a QS response, followed by the complete loss of AHL-dependent signalling following longer exposures. UPLC-MS analysis confirmed the time-dependent degradation of AHL molecules and their conversion into a series of by-products. FT-IR analysis of plasma-exposed AHLs highlighted the appearance of an OH group. In vivo assessment of the exposure of AHLs to plasma was examined using a standard in vivo model. Lettuce leaves injected with the rhlI/lasI mutant PAO-MW1 alongside plasma treated N-butyryl-homoserine lactone and n-(3-oxo-dodecanoyl)-homoserine lactone, exhibited marked attenuation of virulence. This study highlights the capacity of atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma to modify and degrade AHL autoinducers thereby attenuating QS-dependent virulence in P. aeruginosa.

Investigations of chaotic particle transport by drift waves propagating in the edge plasma of tokamaks with poloidal zonal flow are described. For large aspect ratio tokamaks, the influence of radial electric field profiles on convective cells and transport barriers, created by the nonlinear interaction between the poloidal flow and resonant waves, is investigated. For equilibria with edge shear flow, particle transport is seen to be reduced when the electric field shear is reversed. The transport reduction is attributed to the robust invariant tori that occur in nontwist Hamiltonian systems. This mechanism is proposed as an explanation for the transport reduction in Tokamak Chauffage Alfven Bresilien [R. M. O. Galvao , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 43, 1181 (2001)] for discharges with a biased electrode at the plasma edge.

According to an ancient folkloric legend, Our Lady, stepping down from the sea, would have rided on a mule to the platform above the cliffs named Pedra da Mua at Lagosteiros'bay, near Espichel cape. Mule's footprints, regarded by fishermen as evidence, would be clearly recognizable on exposed surfaces of the rocks. Indeed there are footprints but from Dinosaurs of latest Jurassic, Portlandian age, this spectacular locality being specially rich in giant Sauropod tracks (that have seldom been found elsewhere in Europe). As we proceeded to its study, another locality with Dinosaur footprints, Lower Cretaceous (Hauterivian) in age, was found on the northern cliffs at Lagosteiros. It is probably the richest one in european Lower Cretaceous and the only of this age known in Portugal, so we decided to give priority to its study. Dinosaur tracks have been printed on calciclastic sands in a lagoonal environment protected by fringing coral reefs. There have been emersion episodes; beaches were frequented by Dinosaurs. Later on, the marine barremian ingression restablished a gulf and such animals could not come here any more. Under a paleogeographical viewpoint, the evidence of a marine regression near the end of Hauterivian is to be remarked. Five types of tracks and footprints have been recognized: - Neosauropus lagosteirensis, new morphogenus and species, tracks from a giant Sauropod, perhaps from Camarasaurus; with its proportions the total length of the author would be about 15,5 m. These are the only Sauropod tracks known till now in Europe's Lower Cretaceous. - tracks from a not so big quadruped, maybe a Sauropod (young individual?); however it is not impossible that they were produced by Stegosaurians or Ankylosaurians. -Megalosauropus (?Eutynichnium) gomesi new morphospecies, four Theropod tracks most probably produced by megalosaurs. - Iguanodon sp., represented by some footprints and specially by a set corresponding to the feet and tail from an individual standing in a rest position. - problematical, quite small-sized biped (maybe an Ornithopod related to Camptosaurus). Evidence points to a richer fauna than that known in barremian "Dinosaur sandstones" from a nearby locality, Boca do Chapim. Lagosteiros' association clearly indicates the predominance of herbivores, which required large amounts of vegetable food in the neighbourhood. This is an indirect evidence of the vegetal wealth, also suggested by associations of plant macrofossils, polen and spores found in early Cretaceous sediments at the same region. The relatively high proportion of Theropoda is related to the wealth of the whole fauna, which comprised a lot of the prey needed by such powerful flesh-eaters. The evidence, as a whole, points out to a warm and moist climate. All the tracks whose direction could be measured are directed to the southern quadrants, this being confirmed by the approximative direction of other footprints. Massive displacements (migration?) could take place during a brief emersion episode. This may result from the ingression of barremian seas, flooding the region and restablishing here a small gulf. Even if the arrival of the waters damaged certain footprints it has not destroyed them completely, thus allowing the preservation of such evidence from a remote past.

Die grundlegenden Prinzipien und Möglichkeiten der Oberflächencharakterisierung mittels ToF-SIMS (Flugzeit-Sekundärionen Massenspektrometrie) werden an ausgewählten Beispielen aus einem aktuell laufenden und vom BMBF geförderten Verbundforschungsprojekt (Fkz: 03N8022A) zum Thema Nanofunktionalisierung von Grenzflächen vorgestellt. Ein Schwerpunkt innerhalb des Projekts stellen die nichtgeschlossenen Schichtsysteme dar, die entweder über Domänenstrukturen oder einer definierten Einzelfunktionalisierung neuartige funktionelle Oberflächen bereitstellen. Mithilfe der sehr oberflächensensitiven ToF-SIMS Methode sowie der Möglichkeit einer graphischen Darstellung lateraler Molekülionenverteilungen auf funktionalisierten Oberflächen können Informationen über Struktur und Belegungsdichte der Funktionsschicht gewonnen werden. Die Kombination des ToF-SIMS Experimentes und eines multivariaten Algorithmus (partial least squares, PLS) liefert eine interessante Möglichkeit zur quantitativen und simultanen Bestimmung von Oberflächeneigenschaften (Element- und molekulare Konzentrationen sowie Kontaktwinkelwerte). Da das ToF-SIMS Spektrum einer plasmafunktionalisierten Oberfläche im Allgemeinen eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Fragmentsignale enthält, lässt eine einfache eindimensionale Korrelation (z.B. CF3 - Fragmentintensität ßà CF3-Konzentration) den größten Teil der im Spektrum prinzipiell enthaltenen Information unberücksichtigt. Aufgrund der großen Anzahl von atomaren und molekularen Signalen, die repräsentativ für die chemische Struktur der analysierten Oberflächen sind, ist es sinnvoll, diese Fülle von Informationen zur Quantifizierung der Oberflächeneigenschaften (Elementkonzentrationen, Kontaktwinkel etc.) zu verwenden. Zusätzlich ermöglicht diese Methode eine quantitative Bestimmung der Oberflächeneigenschaften auf nur µm-großen Bereichen. Das ist vorteilhaft für Untersuchungen chemisch strukturierter Oberflächen, da die Größe der Strukturierung für viele Anwendungen in einem Bereich von mehreren µm liegt. Anhand eines Beispieles aus dem biologisch-medizinischen Fachgebiet, soll der erfolgreiche Einsatz multivariater Modelle aufgezeigt werden. In diesem Experiment wurden menschlichen Bindegewebs- (Fibroblasten) und Pankreaszellen auf plasmafunktionalisiserten Oberflächen kultiviert, um die Beeinflussung der Funktionalisierung auf das Zellwachstum zu untersuchen. Die plasmabehandelten Oberflächen wurden durch die Verwendung von TEM-Gittern mit µm-großen Öffnungen chemisch strukturiert und das Wachstumsverhalten der Zellen beobachtet. Jedem dieser µm-großen Bereiche können mithilfe der multivariaten Modelle quantitative Größen zugeordnet werden (Konzentrationen und Kontaktwinkelwerte), die zur Interpretation des Wachstumsverhaltens der Zellen beitragen.

Basalts from DSDP Site 417 (109 Ma) exhibit the effects of several stages of alteration reflecting the evolution of seawater-derived solution compositions and control by the structure and permeability of the crust. Characteristic secondary mineral assemblages occur in often superimposed alteration zones within individual basalt fragments. By combining bulk rock and single phase chemical analyses with detailed mineralogic and petrographic studies, chemical changes have been determined for most of the alteration stages identified in the basalts. 1) Minor amounts of saponite, chlorite, and pyrite formed locally in coarse grained portions of massive units, possibly at high temperatures during initial cooling of the basalts. No chemical changes could be determined for this stage. 2) Possible mixing of cooled hydrothermal fluids with seawater resulted in the formation of celadonite-nontronite and Fe-hydroxide-rich black halos around cracks and pillow rims. Gains of K, Rb, H20, increase of Fe 3 +/FeT and possibly some losses of Ca and Mg occurred during this stage. 3a) Extensive circulation of oxygenated seawater resulted in the formation of various smectites, K-feldspar, and Fe-hydroxides in brown and light grey alteration zones around formerly exposed surfaces. K, Rb, H20, and occasionally P were added to the rocks, Fe3+/FeT increased, and Ca, Mg, Si and occasionally Al and Na were lost. 3 b) Anoxic alteration occurred during reaction of basalt with seawater at low water-rock ratios, or with seawater that had previously reacted with basalt. Saponite-rich dark grey alteration zones formed which exhibit very little chemical change: generally only slight increases in Fe 3 +/FeT and H20 occurred. 4) Zeolites and calcite formed from seawater-derived fluids modified by previous reactions with basalt. Chemical changes involved increases of Ca, Na, H20 , and CO2 in the rocks. 5) A late stage of anoxic conditions resulted in the formation of minor amounts of Mn-calcites and secondary sulfides in previously oxidized rocks. No chemical changes were determined for this stage. Recognition of such alteration sequences is important in understanding the evolution of submarine hydrothermal systems and in interpreting chemical exchange due to seawater-basalt reactions.

As soon as they are emplaced on the sea floor, oceanic basalts go through a low-temperature alteration process which produces black halos concentrical with exposed surfaces and cracks, whereas the grey internal parts of the basaltic pieces apparently remain unaltered. This paper reports for the first time the occurrence of authigenic siderite and ankerite in oceanic basalts and more particularly in the grey internal parts of the latter. Small (8-50 µm) crystals of zoned siderite and ankerite have been observed in ten vesicles of two samples recovered from DSDP Holes 506G and 507B drilled south of the Galápagos Spreading Center (GSC). These Fe-carbonates show a large range of chemical composition (FeCO3 = 47-88%; CaCO3 = 5-40%; MgCO3 = 1-20%; MnCO3 = 0-11%). Most of them are Ca-richer than siderite reported in the literature. The chemical composition of the carbonate clearly reflects the fluctuation of the fluid chemical composition during crystallization. Mn and at least part of the Fe are thought to be hydrothermal in origin, whereas Mg and probably Ca were provided by seawater. It is proposed that siderite and ankerite formed at relatively low temperature (<85°C) and is metastable. The alteration of the GSC basalts seems to have proceeded in two stages: during the first, reducing stage, pyrite precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. A little further in the rock, siderite precipitated from the fluid which had already been modified by the formation of pyrite, and thus in a microenvironment where particular conditions prevailed (high P_CO2, increasing p_S**2- or increasing pH or increasing or decreasing pe). During the second, oxidizing, stage of alteration, a seawater-dominated fluid allowed crystallization of mixtures of Fe-rich smectites and micas, and Fe-hydroxides forming the black halos in the external portion of the basalt pieces and locally oxidizing pyrite and siderite in their innermost part. It is shown in this paper that, even at its earliest stage, and at low temperature, alteration of the upper oceanic crust (lavas) involves fluids enriched in Fe and Mn, interpreted to be of hydrothermal origin.
