Small scale laboratory experiments, in which the specimen is considered to represent an element of soil in the soil mass, are essential to the evolution of fundamental theories of mechanical behaviour. In this thesis, plane strain and axisymmetric compression tests, performed on a fine sand, are reported and the results are compared with various theoretical predictions. A new apparatus is described in which cuboidal samples can be tested in either axisymmetric compression or plane strain. The plane strain condition is simulated either by rigid side platens, in the conventional manner, or by flexible side platens which also measure the intermediate principal stress. Close control of the initial porosity of the specimens is achieved by a vibratory method of sample preparation. The strength of sand is higher in plane strain than in axisymmetric compression, and the strains required to mobilize peak strength are much smaller. The difference between plane strain and axisymmetric compression behaviour is attributed to the restrictions on particle movement enforced by the plane strain condition; this results in an increase in the frictional component of shear strength. The stress conditions at failure in plane strain, including the intermediate principal stress, are accurately predicted by a theory based on the stress- dilatancy interpretation of Mohr's circles. Detailed observations of rupture modes are presented and measured rupture plane inclinations are predicted by the stress-dilatancy theory. Although good correlation with the stress-dilatancy theory is obtained during virgin loading, in both axisymmetric compression and plane strain, the stress-dilatancy rule is only obeyed during reloading if the specimen has been unloaded to approximate ambient stress conditions. The shape of the stress-strain curves during pre-peak deformation, in both plane strain and axisymmetric compression, is accurately described bv a combined parabolic-hyperbolic specification.

High-resolution X-ray diffractometry is used to probe the nature of a diffraction-peak broadening previously noticed in quantum dots (QDs) systems with freestanding InAs islands on top of GaAs (001) substrates [Freitas et al., Phys. Status Solidi (A) 204, 2548 (2007)]. The procedure is hence extended to further investigate the capping process of InAs/GaAs QDs. A direct correlation is established between QDs growth rates and misorientation of lattice-planes at the samples surfaces. This effect provides an alternative too] for studying average strain fields on QDs systems in standard triple axis diffractometers running on X-ray tube sources, which are much more common than synchrotron facilities. The influence of test method factors (notch shape, square or angular, and pre-cracking method, by tapping onto or pressing a razor blade) on the results obtained in plane strain fracture toughness test according to standard ASTM D5045 using SENB specimens made of a commercial PMMA resin were investigated. Results were analyzed quantitatively by comparing the obtained K-IC values and qualitatively by observing their effect on the Moire fringes observed using photoelasticity, showing that, at 95% significance level, the K-IC values are affected by the pre-cracking method, with the most conservative value being obtained when natural pre-cracks were introduced by tapping onto a razor blade (K-IC = 1.15 +/- 0.11 MPa.m(0.5)). This correlates with a perturbation in the stress field close to the pre-crack tip observed in the photoelasticity test sample when it was introduced by pressing the razor blade. Surprisingly, notch geometry only slightly affects the results. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The results of a combined experimental program and numerical modeling program to evaluate the behavior of ungrouted hollow concrete blocks prisms under uniaxial compression are addressed. In the numerical program, three distinct approaches have been considered using a continuum model with a smeared approach, namely plane-stress, plane-strain and three-dimensional conditions. The response of the numerical simulations is compared with experimental data of masonry prisms using concrete blocks specifically designed for this purpose. The elastic and inelastic parameters were acquired from laboratory tests on concrete and mortar samples that constitute the blocks and the bed joint of the prisms. The results from the numerical simulations are discussed with respect to the ability to reproduce the global response of the experimental tests, and with respect to the failure behavior obtained. Good agreement between experimental and numerical results was found for the peak load and for the failure mode using the three-dimensional model, on four different sets of block/mortar types. Less good agreement was found for plain stress and plain strain models.

Norcamphor (C7H10O) was subjected to plane strain simple shear in a see-through deformation rig at four different strain rate and temperature conditions. Two transient stages in the microfabric evolution to steady state are distinguished. The grain scale mechanisms associated with the microstructural and textural evolution vary with the applied temperature, strain rate and strain. In high-temperature-low-strain-rate experiments, computer integrated polarization microscopy reveals that the texture evolution is closely related to the crystallographic rotation paths and rotation rates of individual grains. High c-axis rotation rates at low to intermediate shear strains are related to the development of a symmetrical c-axis cross girdle by the end of the first transient stage (γ = 1.5 to 2). During the second transient stage (γ = 1.5 to 6), the cross girdle yields to an oblique c-axis single girdle as c-axis rotation rates decrease and the relative activity of grain boundary migration recrystallization increases. Steady state (γ > 8) is characterized by a stable end orientation of the sample texture and the cyclic growth, rotation and consumption of individual grains within the aggregate.

This paper describes recent advances made in computational modelling of the sugar cane liquid extraction process. The saturated fibro-porous material is rolled between circumferentially grooved rolls, which enhance frictional grip and provide a low-resistance path for liquid flow during the extraction process. Previously reported two-dimensional (2D) computational models, account for the large deformation of the porous material by solving the fully coupled governing fibre stress and fluid-flow equations using finite element techniques. While the 2D simulations provide much insight into the overarching cause-effect relationships, predictions of mechanical quantities such as roll separating force and particularly torque as a function of roll speed and degree of compression are not satisfactory for industrial use. It is considered that the unsatisfactory response in roll torque prediction may be due to the stress levels that exist between the groove tips and roots which have been largely neglected in the geometrically simplified 2D model. This paper gives results for both two- and three-dimensional finite element models and highlights their strengths and weaknesses in predicting key milling parameters. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A theory was developed to allow the separate determination of the effects of the interparticle friction and interlocking of particles on the shearing resistance and deformational behavior of granular materials. The derived parameter, angle of solid friction, is independent of the type of shear test, stress history, porosity and the level of confining pressure, and depends solely upon the nature of the particle surface. The theory was tested against published data concerning the performance of plane strain, triaxial compression and extension tests on cohesionless soils. The theory also was applied to isotropically consolidated undrained triaxial tests on three crushed limestones prepared by the authors using vibratory compaction. The authors concluded that, (1) the theory allowed the determination of solid friction between particles which was found to depend solely on the nature of the particle surface, (2) the separation of frictional and volume change components of shear strength of granular materials qualitatively corroborated the postulated mechanism of deformation (sliding and rolling of groups of particles over other similar groups with resulting dilatancy of specimen), (3) the influence of void ratio, gradation confining pressure, stress history and type of shear test on shear strength is reflected in values of the omega parameter, and (4) calculation of the coefficient of solid friction allows the establishment of the lower limit of the shear strength of a granular material.

This work examines the effect of weld strength mismatch on fracture toughness measurements defined by J and CTOD fracture parameters using single edge notch bend (SE(B)) specimens. A central objective of the present study is to enlarge on previous developments of J and CTOD estimation procedures for welded bend specimens based upon plastic eta factors (eta) and plastic rotational factors (r (p) ). Very detailed non-linear finite element analyses for plane-strain models of standard SE(B) fracture specimens with a notch located at the center of square groove welds and in the heat affected zone provide the evolution of load with increased crack mouth opening displacement required for the estimation procedure. One key result emerging from the analyses is that levels of weld strength mismatch within the range +/- 20% mismatch do not affect significantly J and CTOD estimation expressions applicable to homogeneous materials, particularly for deeply cracked fracture specimens with relatively large weld grooves. The present study provides additional understanding on the effect of weld strength mismatch on J and CTOD toughness measurements while, at the same time, adding a fairly extensive body of results to determine parameters J and CTOD for different materials using bend specimens with varying geometries and mismatch levels.

In this work, a series of two-dimensional plane-strain finite element analyses was conducted to further understand the stress distribution during tensile tests on coated systems. Besides the film and the substrate, the finite element model also considered a number of cracks perpendicular to the film/substrate interface. Different from analyses commonly found in the literature, the mechanical behavior of both film and substrate was considered elastic-perfectly plastic in part of the analyses. Together with the film yield stress and the number of film cracks, other variables that were considered were crack tip geometry, the distance between two consecutive cracks and the presence of an interlayer. The analysis was based on the normal stresses parallel to the loading axis (sigma(xx)), which are responsible for cohesive failures that are observed in the film during this type of test. Results indicated that some configurations studied in this work have significantly reduced the value of sigma(xx) at the film/substrate interface and close to the pre-defined crack tips. Furthermore, in all the cases studied the values of sigma(xx) were systematically larger at the film/substrate interface than at the film surface. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Finite element analysis (FEA) utilizing models with different levels of complexity are found in the literature to study the tendency to vertical root fracture caused by post intrusion (""wedge effect""). The objective of this investigation was to verify if some simplifications used in bi-dimensional FEA models are acceptable regarding the analysis of stresses caused by wedge effect. Three plane strain (PS) and two axisymmtric (Axi) models were studied. One PS model represented the apical third of the root entirely, in dentin (PS-nG). The other models included gutta-percha in the apical third, and differed regarding dentin-post relationship: bonded (PS-B and Axi-B) or nonbonded (PS-nB and Axi-nB). Mesh discretization and material properties were similar for all cases. Maximum principal stress (sigma(max)) was analyzed as a response to a 165 N longitudinal load. Stress magnitude and orientation varied widely (PS-nG: 10.3 MPa; PS-B: 0.8 MPa; PS-nB: 10.4 MPa; Axi-13: 0.2 MPa, Axi-nB: 10.8 MPa). Axi-nB was the only model where all (sigma(max) vectors at the apical third were perpendicular to the model plane. Therefore, it is adequate to demonstrate the tendency to vertical root fractures caused by wedge effect. Axi-13 showed only part of the (sigma(max) perpendicular to the model plane while PS models showed sigma(max) on the model plane. In these models, sigma(max) orientation did not represent a situation where vertical root fracture would occur due to wedge effect. Adhesion between post and dentin significantly reduced (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Variable aspect ratio porphyroblasts deformed in non-coaxial flow. and internally containing rotated relicts of an external foliation, can be used to characterise plane strain flow regimes. The distribution obtained by plotting the orientation of the long axis of such grains, classified by aspect ratio, against the orientation of the internal foliation is potentially a sensitive gauge of both the bulk shear strain (as previously suggested) and kinematic vorticity number. We illustrate the method using rotated biotite porphyroblasts in the Alpine Schist: a sequence of mid-crustal rocks that have been ramped to the surface along the Alpine Fault. a major transpressional plate boundary. Results indicate that, at distances greater than or equal to similar to1 km from the fault, the rocks have undergone a combination of irrotational fattening and dextral-oblique, normal-sense shear, with a bulk shear strain of similar to0.6 and kinematic vorticity number of similar to0.2. The vorticity analysis is compatible with estimates of strongly oblate bulk strain of similar to 75% maximum shortening. Dextral-reverse transpressional flow characterises higher strain S-tectonite mylonite within similar to1 km of the Alpine Fault. These relationships provide insight into the kinematics of flow and distribution of strain in the hangingwall of the Alpine Fault and place constraints on numerical mechanical models for the exhumation of these mid-crustal rocks.
