This Thesis discussed molecules suitable for photorefractive effect. Out of the molecules studied, only one system was used to make photorefractive polymers system. Other molecules, especially, the electro-optic polymer, Poly(3-methacrloyl-1-(4'-nitro-4-azo-1'-phenyl)phenylalanine-co- methyl methacrylate) can be subjected to more detailed studies to explore the possibilities of using them for electro-optic applications. Though not included in the thesis, the efficient photoconductor, Poly(6-tert-butyl-3- phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine) sensitized with C60, which was described in Chapter 3 showed a low magnitude photovoltaic effect. This hints at the possibility of using this system for organic solar cells also. The thesis presented the initial observation of photorefractive effect in a polybenzoxazine based polymer system. A detailed analysis of the effect of C60, ECZ and DR1 can be carried out to check for the possibility of a high efficiency photorefractive system.

The orientational behavior of liquid crystalline polymers with para-nitro azobenzene as side chains under electric field was studied by UV-visible spectroscopy. The results showed that lambda(max) of the poled polymer films was around 394nm, compared to that of the unpoled films, the absorption decreased due to poling. The orientational parameters increased linearly with the increase of the electric field. The temporal stability of the poled polymer film is good at room temperature. This kind of materials showed promise application as nonlinear optical component in photorefractive polymers.

In the last year [1], Angiolini and co-workers have synthesized and investigated methacrylic polymers bearing in the side chain the chiral cyclic (S)-3-hydroxypyrrolidine moiety interposed between the main chain and the trans-azoaromatic chromophore, substituted or not in the 4’ position by an electron-withdrawing group. In these materials, the presence of a rigid chiral moiety of one prevailing absolute configuration favours the establishment of a chiral conformation of one prevailing helical handedness, at least within chain segments of the macromolecules, which can be observed by circular dichroism (CD). The simultaneous presence of the azoaromatic and chiral functionalities allows the polymers to display both the properties typical of dissymmetric systems (optical activity, exciton splitting of dichroic absorptions), as well as the features typical of photochromic materials (photorefractivity, photoresponsiveness, NLO properties). The first part of this research was to synthesize analogue homopolymers and copolymers based on bisazoaromatic moiety and compare their properties to those of the above mentioned analogue derivatives bearing only one azoaromatic chromophore in the side chain. We focused also the attention on the effects induced on the thermal and chiroptical behaviours by the insertion of particulars achiral comonomers characterized by different side-chain mobility and grown hindrance (MMA, tert-BMA and TrMA). On the other hand carbazole containing polymers [2] have attracted much attention because of their unique features. The use of these materials in advanced micro- and nanotechnologies spreads in many different applications such as photoconductive and photorefractive polymers, electroluminescent devices, programmable optical interconnections, data storage, chemical photoreceptors, NLO, surface relief gratings, blue emitting materials and holographic memory. The second part of the work was focused on the synthesis and the characterization polymeric derivatives bearing in the side chain carbazole or phenylcarbazole moieties linked to the (S)- 2-hydroxy succinimide or the (S)-3-hydroxy pyrrolidinyl ring as chiral groups covalently linked to the main chain through ester bonds. The last objective of this research was to design, synthesize, and characterize multifunctional methacrylic homopolymers and copolymers bearing three distinct functional groups (i.e. azoaromatic, carbazole and chiral group of one single configuration) directly linked in the side chain. This polymeric derivatives could be of potential interest for several advanced application fields, such as optical storage, waveguides, chiroptical switches, chemical photoreceptors, NLO, surface relief gratings, photoconductive materials, etc.

Atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) of styrene in xylene solution initiated with 1-phenylethyl bromide and mediated by CuBr/N-propyl-2- pyridinemethanimine catalyst complex was studied. The polymerisation was ill-controlled, yielding polymers with broad molecular weight distributions and values of number average molecular weight considerably higher than the theoretical values calculated from 100% initiator efficiency. The degree of control afforded over the polymerisation was enhanced by use of a more soluble catalyst complex, CuBr/N-octyl-2-pyridinemethanimine. Furthermore, the use of a more polar solvent, diglyme, generated a homogeneous catalyst complex that facilitated the production of polymers having narrow molecular weight distributions (1.10 < PDi < 1.20). The kinetics of the atom transfer radical polymerisation of methyl methacrylate at 90°C in diglyme solution initiated with ethyl-2-bromoisobutyrate and mediated by CuBr/N-octyl-2-pyridinemethanimine was studied and the orders of the reaction were established. The effect on the rate of polymerisation of the ratio of CuBr:N-octyl-2-pyridinemethanimine was also determined. The temperature dependencies of the rate of polymerisation of methyl methacrylate in diglyme solution and xylene solution were studied, and were found to be non-linear and dependent upon the polarity of the solvent. The use of highly polar aprotic solvents, such as N,N-dimethylformamide and dimethylsulphoxide, was found to be detrimental to the degree of control afforded over the polymerisation of methyl methacrylate. This was circumvented by use of a 5-fold excess, over that conventionally used, of catalyst complex. The atom transfer radical polymerisation of (4-nitrophenyl)-[3-[N-[2- (methacryloyloxy)ethyl]carbazolyl]]diazene in dimethyl sulphoxide solution was studied. Although homopolymerisation yielded only oligomers, copolymerisation of this monomer with methyl methacrylate was found to be readily achievable. Films of piezoelectric PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) were exposed to vacuum UV (115-300 nm VUV) and -radiation to investigate how these two forms of radiation affect the chemical, morphological, and piezoelectric properties of the polymers. The extent of crosslinking was almost identical in both polymers after -irradiation, but surprisingly, was significantly higher for the TrFE copolymer after VUV-irradiation. Changes in the melting behavior were also more significant in the TrFE copolymer after VUV-irradiation due to both surface and bulk crosslinking, compared with only surface crosslinking for the PVDF films. The piezoelectric properties (measured using d33 piezoelectric coefficients and D-E hysteresis loops) were unchanged in the PVDF homopolymer, while the TrFE copolymer exhibited more narrow D-E loops after exposure to either - or VUV-radiation. The more severe damage to the TrFE copolymer in comparison with the PVDF homopolymer after VUV-irradiation is explained by different energy deposition characteristics. The short wavelength, highly energetic photons are undoubtedly absorbed in the surface layers of both polymers, and we propose that while the longer wavelength components of the VUV-radiation are absorbed by the bulk of the TrFE copolymer causing crosslinking, they are transmitted harmlessly in the PVDF homopolymer.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) and copolymers of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoropropylene, trifluoroethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene have been exposed to gamma irradiation in vacuum, up to doses of 1MGy under identical conditions, to obtain a ranking of radiation sensitivities. Changes in the tensile properties, crystalline melting points, heats of fusion, gel contents and solvent uptake factors were used as the defining parameters. The initial degree of crystallinity and film processing had the greatest influence on relative radiation damage, although the cross-linked network features were almost identical in their solvent swelling characteristics, regardless of the comonomer composition or content.

The effects of atomic oxygen (AO) and vacuum UV radiation simulating low Earth orbit conditions on two commercially available piezoelectric polymer films, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE), have been studied. Surface erosion and pattern development are significant for both polymers. Erosion yields were determined as 2.8 1024 cm3/atom for PVDF and 2.5 1024 cm3/atom for P(VDF-TrFE). The piezoelectric properties of the residual material of both polymers were largely unchanged after exposure, although a slight shift in the Curie transition of the P(VDF-TrFE) was observed. A lightly cross-linked network was formed in the copolymer presumably because of penetrating vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, while the homopolymer remained uncross-linked. These differences were attributed to varying degrees of crystallinity and potentially greater absorption, and hence damage, of VUV radiation in P(VDFTrFE) compared with PVDF.

Smart materials, such as thin-film piezoelectric polymers, are interesting for potential applications on Gossamer spacecraft. This investigation aims to predict the performance and long-term stability of the piezoelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers under conditions simulating the low-Earthorbit environment. To examine the effects of temperature on the piezoelectric properties of PVDF, poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene), and poly(vinylidenefluoride-cohexafluoropropylene), the d33 piezoelectric coefficients were measured up to 160 8C, and the electric displacement/electric field (D–E) hysteresis loops were measured from 80 to þ110 8C. The room-temperature d33 coefficient of PVDF homopolymer films, annealed at 50, 80, and 125 8C, dropped rapidly within a few days of thermal exposure and then remained unchanged. In contrast, the TrFE copolymer exhibited greater thermal stability than the homopolymer, with d33 remaining almost unchanged up to 125 8C. The HFP copolymer exhibited poor retention of d33 at temperatures above 80 8C. In situ D–E loop measurements from 80 to þ110 8C showed that the remanent polarization of the TrFE copolymer was more stable than that of the PVDF homopolymer. D–E hysteresis loop and d33 results were also compared with the deflection of the PVDF homopolymer and TrFE copolymer bimorphs tested over a wide temperature range.
