With new photocatalysts of gold nanoparticles supported on zeolite supports (Au/zeolite), oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives into the corresponding aldehydes can proceed well with a high selectivity (99%) under visible light irradiation at ambient temperature. Au/zeolite photocatalysts were characterized by UV/Vis, XPS, TEM, XRD, EDS, BET, IR, and Raman techniques. The Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) effect of gold nanoparticles, the adsorption capability of zeolite supports, and the molecular polarities of aromatic alcohols were demonstrated to have an essential correlation with the photocatalytic performances. In addition, the effects of light intensity, wavelength range, and the role of molecular oxygen were investigated in detail. The kinetic study indicated that the visible light irradiation required much less apparent activation energy for photooxidation compared with thermal reaction. Based on the characterization data and the photocatalytic performances, we proposed a possible photooxidation mechanism.

It has been established by photoemission studies that Ge in obliquely deposited pure Ge and Ge-chalcogenide thin films undergoes predominant photooxidation when irradiated with band gap photons. The role of Ge appears to be that of providing a highly porous low density microstructure and photooxidation seems to be a direct consequence of such large scale porosity in these films. The formation of low vapour pressure oxide fractions of Ge and Te and volatile high vapour pressure oxide fractions of S and Se is responsible for anomalous photoinduced transformations in these films.

The increasing use of patterned neural networks in multielectrode arrays and similar devices drives the constant development and evaluation of new biomaterials. Recently, we presented a promising technique to guide neurons and glia reliably and effectively. Parylene-C, a common hydrophobic polymer, was photolithographically patterned on silicon oxide (SiO(2)) and subsequently activated via immersion in serum. In this article, we explore the effects of ultraviolet (UV)-induced oxidation on parylene's ability to pattern neurons and glia. We exposed parylene-C stripe patterns to increasing levels of UV radiation and found a dose-dependent reduction in the total mass of patterned cells, as well as a gradual loss of glial and neuronal conformity to the patterns. In contrast, nonirradiated patterns had superior patterning results and increased presence of cells. The reduced cell adhesion and patterning after the formation of aldehyde and carboxyl groups on UV-radiated parylene-C supports our hypothesis that cell adhesion and growth on parylene is facilitated by hydrophobic adsorption of serum proteins. We conclude that unlike other cell patterning schemes, our technique does not rely on photooxidation of the polymer. Nonetheless, the precise control of oxygenated groups on parylene could pave the way for the differential binding of proteins and other molecules on the surface, aiding in the adhesion of alternative cell types. Many laboratories deal with the determination of heavy metals, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The first step in chemical analysis is a proper preparation of the investigated samples. The presence of organic substances can cause problems in many analytical methods. This paper describes the application of UV irradiation as a method of destruction of organic matter in the investigated samples.

The melt flow behaviour of LDPE/HDPE blends with various compositions have been determined by melt flow index (MFI) measurement. The effects of stabilizers, photo-sensitizers, multiple extrusions and short-term photooxidation have been studied. The results show that there is no marked thermal stability difference between homopolymers and blends without multiple extrusions, no matter whether stabilizers or photo-sensitizers are added. Multiple extrusions or photo-sensitizers reduce their thermal stability, shown by the decrease in MFI. The decrease in MFI of photooxidized samples does not imply serious structural change and shows that the active species formed during photooxidation induce a crosslinking reaction in the melt indexer. Multiple extrusions increase the number of active species formed in LDPE or blends and lead to an obvious decrease in MFI. It is suggested that LDPE and LDPE-rich blends after short-term photooxidation can be characterized by MFI measurement. In contrast, HDPE cannot be characterized by this method due to its linear structure.

Quantum yields of the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under controlled periodic illumination (CPI) have been modelled using existing models. A modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) rate equation was used to predict the degradation reaction rates of methyl orange at various duty cycles and a simple photocatalytic model was applied in modelling quantum yield enhancement of the photocatalytic process due to the CPI effect. A good agreement between the modelled and experimental data was observed for quantum yield modelling. The modified L-H model, however, did not accurately predict the photocatalytic decomposition of the dye under periodic illumination.

Using density functional theory calculations with HSE 06 functional, we obtained the structures of spin-polarized radicals on rutile TiO2(110), which is crucial to understand the photooxidation at the atomic level, and further calculate the thermodynamic stabilities of these radicals. By analyzing the results, we identify the structural features for hole trapping in the system, and reveal the mutual effects among the geometric structures, the energy levels of trapped hole states and their hole trapping capacities. Furthermore, the results from HSE 06 functional are compared to those from DFT + U and the stability trend of radicals against the number of slabs is tested. The effect of trapped holes on two important steps of the oxygen evolution reaction, i.e. water dissociation and the oxygen removal, is investigated and discussed.
