As imagens médicas do Hospital Miguel Bombarda – proposta para o seu tratamento documental

A presente dissertação de mestrado apresenta o trabalho desenvolvido em torno de um conjunto de fotografias provenientes do Hospital Miguel Bombarda e custodiadas pelo Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa. Partindo de uma reflexão sobre a fotografia enquanto documento de arquivo e, por isso, enquadrada num certo contexto que presidiu à sua produção e conservação, pretende-se contribuir para uma melhor compreensão de um conjunto retratos de doentes. Os objectivos deste trabalho passam por procurar compreender as abordagens teóricas relativamente à fotografia enquanto documento de arquivo, reconstituir o contexto de produção da documentação fotográfica seleccionada e perceber de que forma este conhecimento pode enriquecer a leitura das imagens. É apresentada numa proposta de descrição arquivística sob a forma de um catálogo. Pretende-se que a descrição seja capaz de reflectir a investigação efectuada e possa também servir de modelo e ser alargada à restante documentação fotográfica.

A fotografia em contexto colonial: tratamento arquivístico da documentação fotográfica da Missão Antropológica e Etnológica da Guiné entre 1946-1947

O presente Relatório de Estágio é o resultado de um conjunto de actividades realizadas no Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), que incidiram na documentação fotográfica produzida no âmbito da Missão Antropológica e Etnológica da Guiné, chefiada pelo Professor Amílcar de Magalhães Mateus, entre 1946 e 1947. O tratamento arquivístico da referida documentação consistiu na identificação, organização, higienização, acondicionamento, descrição e digitalização, com vista a preservação e posterior disponibilização, bem como identificar o contexto de produção em que a mesma foi produzida e verificar o respeito pelos princípios da proveniência e da ordem original. O presente trabalho pretende contribuir para o aprofundamento do conhecimento sobre o papel da fotografia como ferramenta para o conhecimento e trabalho científico, bem como a sua importância e estatuto no campo da arquivística

Elaboração do Plano de Classificação de fotografia para a divisão do Arquivo Municipal e Gestão Documental da Câmara Municipal de Sesimbra

Elaboração do plano de classificação do Arquivo Fotográfico da Divisão do Arquivo Municipal e Gestão Documental. Para a elaboração da morosa tarefa arquivística procedeu-se, primeiramente, à caracterização da estrutura orgânica e funcional do Arquivo Municipal de Sesimbra, quer no sistema de gestão documental, quer no plano de classificação do arquivo corrente. Atende-se, ainda, à classificação de clientes (quantificação e qualificação). Numa segundo fase, reconsideramos a fotografia como objeto direto da arquivística – a fotografia como documento de arquivo; a fotografia nos arquivos portugueses; as normas de classificação de fotografias, nacionais e internacionais e, finalmente, tomamos contato com as espécies fotográficas de Américo Ribeiro e Idaleciano Cabecinha, fotografias que representam aspetos singulares da vila piscatória de Sesimbra e suas gentes. Apresenta-se, no terminus desta investigação, o plano de classificação da Divisão do Arquivo Municipal e Gestão Documental. São descritos, por conseguinte, (i) objetivos, (ii) sistema e estrutura de classificação, (iii) descrição analítica codificada e, (iv) os elementos constitutivos do referido plano de classificação. Apresentamos, finalmente, um estudo arquivométrico de um dos acervos fotográficos – Fundo Doação Valdemar – do fotógrafo Idaleciano Cabecinha. Determinamos, assim, quais os temas e subtemas mais representativos da estética mimética de Cabecinha.

A Gestão Documental na Autoridade Portuária de Barcelona

Este relatório de estágio representa o trabalho desenvolvido na Autoritat Portuària de Barcelona (APB), mais precisamente no Centro de Documentação da Autoridade Portuária de Barcelona, num período de 150 horas, onde tive a oportunidade de passar pelos diferentes serviços de documentação e realizar as tarefas inerentes a uma Instituição com idêntica tipologia àquela onde presto idêntica atividade em Portugal. Descreve-se a empresa e o trabalho desenvolvido no Centro de Documentação (CENDOC), considerando todas as funções desenvolvidas ao nível da gestão documental, na biblioteca, no arquivo intermédio, histórico e no arquivo fotográfico. O serviço de Arquivo agiliza a gestão de um fundo documental com mais de 3.900 metros lineares de documentos textuais, 500 metros lineares de documentação gráfica e cartográfica e 75.000 fotografias. Também gere o Património Cultural Móvel da APB, tanto o fundo documental do Arquivo Histórico (textual e imagens), como as coleções de objetos artísticos de interesse histórico e cultural (pinturas, esculturas, artes decorativas, cartas náuticas, modelos de navios). Toda a documentação do Arquivo Intermédio foi devidamente tratada, higienizada e organizada num novo espaço de arquivo, com melhores condições de acondicionamento. Aproveitando este trabalho, foi desenvolvido um novo Plano de Classificação em maio de 2012, no mesmo período que desenvolvi o estágio, a fim de melhorar o serviço de Arquivo. O serviço da Biblioteca tem ao alcance dos seus utilizadores um fundo de 1276 publicações periódicas e mais de 2.300 monografias, catalogadas no programa informático CDS/ISIS. A sua classificação é feita com base na Classificação Decimal Universal (CDU), e a partir de um tesauro especifico elaborado pelos técnicos do CENDOC. Enquanto Técnica Superior no Centro de Documentação e Informação na Administração do Porto de Lisboa (APL), o desenvolvimento deste estágio trouxe um importante contributo para o serviço que desempenho no Centro de Documentação e Informação na Administração do Porto de Lisboa. Este Estágio possibilitou, sem dúvida, um melhor conhecimento teórico e prático no âmbito das tarefas inerentes ao mesmo, e a capacitação para o desenvolvimento de projetos relacionados com as funções que desempenho, no Centro de Documentação e Informação da Administração do Porto de Lisboa.

The Extras Regina, 2008

Project includes: a large scale live performance and resulting performance video, at Curtain Razors, Regina Queen’s Square, Regina, 2008 Live Performance, 45 mins, incl. 1 actor, 23 extras, 2 live cameras, live video and sound mixing, stage set, video projection. Video 45 mins Video Trailer 7 mins The Extras is a video performance referencing the form of a large live film shoot. The Extras contextualises contemporary Westerns genres within an experimental live tableau. The live performance and resulting 45 mins video make reference 19th century Western Author German Karl May, the tradition of Eastern European Western, (Red Western), Uranium exploitation and entrepreneurial cultures in the Canadian Prairies. Funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, Saskatchewan Arts Board and Curtain Razors, the Extras Regina was staged and performed at Central Plaza in Regina, with a crew of 23 extras, 2 live cameras, live video and sound mixing ad video projection. It involved research in Saskatchewan film and photographic archives. The performance was edited live and mixed with video material which was shot on location, with a further group of extras at historical historical ‘Western’ locations, including Fort Qu' Appelle, 
Castle Butte and Big Muddy. It also involved a collaboration with a local theatre production company, which enacted a dramatised historical incident.

Photosharing on Flickr: intangible heritage and emergent publics

This paper argues that Flickr, a popular ‘photosharing’ website, is facilitating new public engagements with world heritage sites like the Sydney Opera House. Australian heritage institutions (namely libraries and museums) have recently begun to employ Flickr as a site through which to engage communities with their photographic archives and collections. Yet Flickr is more than an ‘online photo album’: it is a social and cultural network generated around personal photographic practices. Members can form ‘groups’: self‐organised communities defined by shared interests in places, photographic genres, or the appraisal of photographs. These groups are public spaces for both visual and textual conversations – complex social negotiations involving personal expression and collective identity. For one group, the common interest is the Sydney Opera House, and their shared visual and textual expressions – representations of this building. This paper argues that such socio‐visual practices themselves constitute an intangible heritage. By drawing on the work of scholars Jose Van Dijck and Nancy Van House, Dawson Munjeri and Michael Warner, the paper proposes that this enactment of intangible heritage is implicated in the broader cultural value of the Sydney Opera House

Film as an archive for colonial photographs: activating the past in the present

This practice-led research looks at the ways in which the colonial archive, and the colonial photographic archive in particular, can be reconstructed to produce new critical histories. The research argues for the potential of the moving image as a tool for re-staging colonial archives, as a means of generating responsible ways of looking at, and of engaging with our troubled collective pasts. In my practice I mix the photographic archive of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company(which became BP) with my family’s photographs from Iran, and with the documentation and narrativization of my encounter with both of these sets of materials, within the moving image. Through this process I address questions about the nature of the photographic archive and the search for historical meaning within it; the question of the researcher’s position within the archive and within the history she produces; and I investigate the affective power of colonial photographs within film and the experience of untimeliness which they produce. While addressing problems associated with the failure of photographic archives to offer access to any stable, transparent meaning, I show how engaging with slippages of meaning can produce other kinds of historical knowledge. But I also argue that attending to the impression of the ‘real’ produced by the colonial photograph as it appears within film, makes the past felt in the present tense, in ways that draw attention to the responsibility of being an onlooker in a situation of injustice. In addition I show how registering the place and time of the researcher within the new filmic archive in motion produces an effective means of imaginative time travel and a lively experience of history.

Recuperación y difusión de los archivos fotográficos de la arquitectura moderna en el Ecuador para el desarrollo de un patrimonio visual

Los arquitectos de la época moderna en el Ecuador consideraron a la fotografía como un elemento importante para registrar y difundir sus obras. El presente trabajo se basa en esta importancia, centrándose en la documentación fotográfica de la arquitectura moderna ecuatoriana. Para la realización de esta tesis se partió de la contextualización del tema, dando a conocer cómo se desarrolló la fotografía y cómo ésta se ligó a la arquitectura en diferentes países de América y Europa. A continuación se realizó una investigación acerca de la fotografía de arquitectura moderna del país, de los diferentes archivos fotográficos, las publicaciones y los fotógrafos de la época en Cuenca, Guayaquil y Quito. Luego del proceso investigativo, se seleccionaron dos fotógrafos principales: RolfBlomberg y Christoph Hirtz. Se analizaron sus obras fotográficas, basándose en criterios de valor de la buena fotografía de arquitectura. Posteriormente, por medio de las imágenes se analizaron las modificaciones que han sufrido, hasta la actualidad, las obras arquitectónicas y su entorno. El trabajo permitió recopilar información que se encontraba dispersa. Para su difusión se creó una base de datos, que está a disposición como medio de consulta para futuras investigaciones. Esta base consta de toda la información recopilada de los fotógrafos ecuatorianos de arquitectura moderna que se pudo encontrar en los diferentes archivos.

MARS (Media Asset Retrieval System): Puget Sound’s Digital Archive

The MARS (Media Asset Retrieval System) Project is the collaborative effort of public broadcasters,libraries and schools in the Puget Sound region to create a digital online resource that provides access to content produced by public broadcasters via the public libraries. Convergence ConsortiumThe Convergence Consortium is a model for community collaboration, including organizations such as public broadcasters, libraries, museums, and schools in the Puget Sound region to assess the needs of their constituents and pool resources to develop solutions to meet those needs. Specifically, the archives of public broadcasters have been identified as significant resources for the local communities and nationally. These resources can be accessed on the broadcasters websites, and through libraries and used by schools, and integrated with text and photographic archives from other partners.MARS’ goalCreate an online resource that provides effective access to the content produced locally by KCTS (Seattle PBS affiliate) and KUOW (Seattle NPR affiliate). The broadcasts will be made searchable using the CPB Metadata Element Set (under development) and controlled vocabularies (to be developed). Puget Sound’s MARS (Media Asset Retrieval System) Digital Library

The MARS (Media Asset Retrieval System) Project is a collaboration between public broadcasters, libraries and schools in the Puget Sound region to assess the needs of their constituents and pool resources to develop solutions to meet those needs. The Project’s ultimate goal is to create a digital online resource that will provide access to content produced by public broadcasters and libraries. The MARS Project is funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Television Future Fund. Convergence ConsortiumThe Convergence Consortium is a model for community collaboration, including representatives from public broadcasting, libraries and schools in the Puget Sound region. They meet regularly to consider collaborative efforts that will be mutually beneficial to their institutions and constituents. Specifically, the archives of public broadcasters have been identified as significant resources that can be accessed through libraries and used by schools, and integrated with text and photographic archives from other partners.Using the work-centered framework, we collected data through interviews with nine engineers and observation of their searching while they performed their regular, job-related searches on the Web. The framework was used to analyze the data on two levels: 1) the activities and organizational relationships and constrains of work domains, and 2) users’ cognitive and social activities and their subjective preferences during searching.

Australians are the creators and custodians of a broad range of cultural materials. This material includes literary, photographic, video and audio archives. These archives should be made available to all Australians for access and reuse, as part of a pre-competitive platform which promotes the interests of the Australian public in gaining access to a diverse range of content that contributes to the development of national and cultural identity. This does not mean that all material must be made available for access and reuse for free and in an unrestricted fashion. But for publicly funded content, free and unrestricted access should be the default. The Venturous Australia report on the National Innovation System recommended that “[t]o the maximum extent possible, information, research and content funded by Australian governments – including national collections – should be made freely available over the internet as part of the global public commons.”1 The report further stated that “both for its direct and indirect benefits to Australia and for the greater global good, Australia should energetically and proudly maximise the extent to which it makes government funded content available as part of the global digital commons...
