Stilbenoid dendrimers with stilbene in the periphery and stilbene in periphery as well as core were synthesized by convergent approach except 2nd generation dendrimer with stilbene in the periphery as well as in core (D-5). All dendrimers were characterized by standard techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS and IR spectroscopy. The MALDI-TOF technique proved to be very helpful in the identification of the 2nd generation dendrimer (D-5) with a mass of 3231 a.m.u. The dendrimers were designed in such a way that an intramolecular photochemical CC bond formation was favored. As two stilbene units of the same molecule were close enough so they preferred an intramolecular cyclic process except for zero generation dendrimers. Apart from the cycloaddition, some E/Z isomerization and oligomer formation was also observed on irradiation. These processes were observed by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF MS. The photochemical behavior was also studied by UV absorption spectroscopy. Irradiating by monochromatic light led to an initial E/Z isomerization and by prolonged irradiation, an irreversible cyclic structure was formed. The choice of the wavelength of incident light is very important as irradiation at 320 nm leads to a reversible E/Z isomerization and a non-reversible cyclobutane formation, but irradiation at 340 nm favors the one-way process E Z. The [2+2] cycloaddition of molecule Tm2De was also studied by irradiating thin films on a quartz surface. An AFM image was taken before irradiation, after 3 sec irradiation and after long irradiation (1 hour). AFM studies show that a short irradiation leads to a cyclic structure as formation of hills of about 20-30 nm on the surface. A prolonged irradiation leads to a CC cross linking which can be monitored on AFM images as disappearance of hills. The roughness goes back to an almost smooth surface. These results prove a very complex material transport, which accompanies the reaction in the surface region.

The aim of the study is to synthesise several dibenzoylakene-type systems such as acenaphthenone-2-ylidene ketones 47 and phenanthrenone-9-ylidene ketones 48 by the condensation reaction of acenaphthenequinone and phenanthrenequinone with methyl ketones. Here studies the thermal and photochemical transformations of acenaphthaenone-2-ylidene ketones 3a-c.These acenaphthenone –2-ylidene ketones underwent extensive decomposition on heating. The objectives of present study is to synthesise acenaphthenone-2-ylidene ketones by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of acenaphthenequinone and methyl ketones, it is to synthesise phenanthrenone –9-ylidene ketones by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of phenanthrequinone and methyl ketones, thermal studies on acenaphthenone-2-ylidene ketones and phenanthrenone-9-ylidene ketones, photochemical studies on acenaphthenone-2-ylidene ketones and phenanthrenone –9-ylidene ketones to establish the generality of dibenzoyalkene rearrangement. Cyclic voltammetric studies on these dibezoyalkenes to compare their redox behaviour with that of the cis and trans isomers of dibenzoyl-ethylene, dibenzoylstilbene. These results should provide some information about their reactivity, and to assess and exploit the potential of these systems as quinonemethides. This study conclude that a number of new dibenzolalkene-type systems have been synthesized by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 1,2-diketones such as phenanthequinone and acenaphthenequinone with methyl ketones. Some of these compounds have been shown to undergo interesting photochemical transformations. Based on the results it is conclude that phenanthjrenone-9-ylidene ketones are excellent Michael acceptors. Methanol adds to these to yield the corresponding furanols. These furanols are unstable and are slowly converted to phenanthro-2 (3H)-furanones.

In this thesis, we report our endeavours in the synthesis of a few polycyclic compounds. We were interested in the synthesis of a few bicyclic compounds designed to undergo interesting photochemical transformations including tripletmediated di-π-methane rearrangement and/or competing singlet-mediated electrocyclic reactions. Our target molecules have "inbuilt" structural features which will potentially alter the photochemistry of the substrate under consideration. The present investigation was undertaken to test our hypothesis on selective intramolecular quenching of singlet or triplet excited states of molecules. We adopted Dies-Alder reaction for the synthesis of several of the bicyclic compounds we were interested in. Some of the precursor dienes synthesised by us are capable of undergoing intramolecular cycloaddition reactions as well. So, it was important to delineate the conditions and structural features that will enable a particular molecule to undergo intermolecular and intramolecular Dies-Alder reaction when treated with a suitable dienophile.Though, the main focus of this thesis is on the synthesis of bicyclic and tricyclic systems capable of undergoing di-π-methane rearrangement, in the last chapter of this thesis, we describe our findings on the synthesis of a few dispirocompounds. These systems were encountered as unexpected products in the attempted synthesis of novel dibenzoylalkene-type systems. Consequently, a brief survey on the synthesis and transformations of dibenzoylalkenes is also included as an integral part of this thesis.

The photochemistry of pesticides triadimefon and triadimenol was studied in aqueous solution and in methanol/water mixtures, in controlled and natural conditions. The photodegradation kinetics and product distribution are strongly dependent on the solvent and on the irradiation wavelength. The degradation rates are faster at 254 nm than at 313 nm. The kinetics is faster in water than methanol. Direct photoreaction is an important dissipation pathway of triadimefon in natural water systems while triadimenol is stable in these conditions. 1,2,4-Triazole and 4-chlorophenol are two of the major photodegradation products. The formation of the 4-chlorophenoxyl radical was detected for both pesticides in methanol and methanol/water mixtures. In methanol/water mixtures the reaction of both pesticides also occurs with 4-chlorophenolate formation, which increases with the water content. The photochemical studies of pesticides and other pollutants should be made in conditions as similar as possible to those observed in environmental systems. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The increased occurrence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms and the production of associated cyanotoxins have presented a threat to drinking water sources. Among the most common types of cyanotoxins found in potable water are microcystins (MCs), a family of cyclic heptapeptides containing substrates. MCs are strongly hepatotoxic and known to initiate tumor promoting activity. The presence of sub-lethal doses of MCs in drinking water is implicated as one of the key risk factors for an unusually high occurrence of primary liver cancer. ^ A variety of traditional water treatment methods have been attempted for the removal of cyanotoxins, but with limited success. Advanced Oxidation Technologies (AOTs) are attractive alternatives to traditional water treatments. We have demonstrated ultrasonic irradiation and UV/H2O2 lead to the degradation of cyanotoxins in drinking water. These studies demonstrate AOTs can effectively degrade MCs and their associated toxicity is dramatically reduced. We have conducted detailed studies of different degradation pathways of MCs and conclude that the hydroxyl radical is responsible for a significant fraction of the observed degradation. Results indicate preliminary products of the sonolysis of MCs are due to the hydroxyl radical attack on the benzene ring and substitution and cleavage of the diene of the Adda peptide residue. AOTs are attractive methods for treatment of cyanotoxins in potable water supplies. ^ The photochemical transformation of MCs is important in the environmental degradation of MCs. Previous studies implicated singlet oxygen as a primary oxidant in the photochemical transformation of MCs. Our results indicate that singlet oxygen predominantly leads to degradation of the phycocyanin, pigments of blue green algae, hence reducing the degradation of MCs. The predominant process involves isomerization of the diene (6E to 6Z) in the Adda side chain via photosensitized isomerization involving the photoexcited phycocyanin. Our results indicate that photosensitized processes play a key role in the environmental fate and elimination of MCs in the natural waters. ^

Chemical reactivity, photolability, and computational studies of the ruthenium nitrosyl complex with a substituted cyclam, fac-[Ru(NO)Cl(2)(kappa(3)N(4),N(8),N(11)(1-carboxypropyl)cyclam)]Cl center dot H(2)O ((1-carboxypropyl) cyclam = 3-(1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-1-yl) propionic acid)), (I) are described. Chloride ligands do not undergo aquation reactions (at 25 degrees C, pH 3). The rate of nitric oxide (NO) dissociation (k(obs-NO)) upon reduction of I is 2.8 s(-1) at 25 +/- 1 degrees C (in 0.5 mol L(-1) HCl), which is close to the highest value found for related complexes. The uncoordinated carboxyl of I has a pK(a) of similar to 3.3, which is close to that of the carboxyl of the non coordinated (1-carboxypropyl) cyclam (pK(a) = 3.4). Two additional pK(a) values were found for I at similar to 8.0 and similar to 11.5. Upon electrochemical reduction or under irradiation with light (lambda(irr) = 350 or 520 nm; pH 7.4), I releases NO in aqueous solution. The cyclam ring N bound to the carboxypropyl group is not coordinated, resulting in a fac configuration that affects the properties and chemical reactivities of I, especially as NO donor, compared with analogous trans complexes. Among the computational models tested, the B3LYP/ECP28MDF, cc-pVDZ resulted in smaller errors for the geometry of I. The computational data helped clarify the experimental acid-base equilibria and indicated the most favourable site for the second deprotonation, which follows that of the carboxyl group. Furthermore, it showed that by changing the pH it is possible to modulate the electron density of I with deprotonation. The calculated NO bond length and the Ru/NO charge ratio indicated that the predominant canonical structure is [Ru(III)NO], but the Ru-NO bond angles and bond index (b.i.) values were less clear; the angles suggested that [Ru(II)NO(+)] could contribute to the electronic structure of I and b.i. values indicated a contribution from [Ru(IV)NO(-)]. Considering that some experimental data are consistent with a [Ru(II)NO(+)] description, while others are in agreement with [Ru(III)NO], the best description for I would be a linear combination of the three canonical forms, with a higher weight for [Ru(II)NO(+)] and [Ru(III)NO].

Nanostructured drug delivery systems (NDDS), such as liposomes, represent a growing area in biomedical research. These microheterogeneous media can be used in many biological systems to provide appropriate drug levels with a specific biodistribution. The photophysical properties of a silicon derivative of tribenzonaphthoporphyrazinato (Si-tri-PcNc) incorporated into liposome were studied by steady-state techniques, time-resolved fluorescence and laser flash photolysis. All the spectroscopy measurements performed allowed us to conclude that Si-tri-PcNc in liposome is a promising NDDS for PDT The in vitro experiments with liposomal NDDS showed that the system is not cytotoxic in darkness, but exhibits a substantial phototoxicity at 1 mu M of photosensitizer concentration and 10.0 J/cm(2) of light. These conditions are sufficient to kill about 80% of the cells.

The main objective of the research work developed in the framework of this PhD thesis was the preparation and development of novel photorheological fluids. This was pursued following two distinct strategies. The first one focused on the synthesis of tripodal compounds functionalized with photodimerizable moieties of cinnamic acid, coumarin and anthracene. Two sets of compounds were prepared, varying the central unit as well as spacers resulting in molecules with different solubilities and molecular weight. All compounds were characterized towards their photochemical properties and all exhibited photoreactivity upon irradiation with ultra-violet light. In particular, both coumarin derivatives exhibited the greatest photopolymerization reactivity, resulting in the formation of dendrimeric nanoparticles or in the increase of viscosity of organic solutions. The second strategy was focused on the careful design of photosensitive ionic liquids, based on the results of several quantitative structure-property relationship studies. Thus, photosensitive ionic liquids were synthesized bearing cinnamic acid or coumarin moieties in the organic cation. Upon irradiation, all compounds exhibited reactivity, which resulted in changes in their physical properties, such as melting point or viscosity. In addition, novel coumarin chromophores with different photophysical and photochemical properties were developed. It is expected that these compounds may find application in the preparation of new photosensitive ionic liquids.

New emerging contaminants could represent a danger to the environment and Humanity with repercussions not yet known. One of the major worldwide pharmaceutical and personal care productions are antimicrobials products, triclosan, is an antimicrobial agent present in most products. Despite the high removal rate of triclosan present in wastewater treatments, triclosan levels are on the rise in the environment through disposal of wastewater effluent and use of sewage sludge in land application. Regulated in the EC/1272/2008 (annex VI, table 3.1), this compound is considered very toxic to aquatic life and it has been reported that photochemical transformation of triclosan produces dioxins. In the current work it was defined three objectives; determination of the most efficient process in triclosan degradation, recurring to photochemical degradation methods comparing different sources of light; identification of the main by-products formed during the degradation and the study of the influence of the Fenton and photo-Fenton reaction. Photochemical degradation methods such as: photocatalysis under florescent light (UV), photocatalysis under visible light (sunlight), photocatalysis under LEDs, photo-Fenton and Fenton reaction have been compared in this work. The degradation of triclosan was visualized through gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In this study photo-Fenton reaction has successfully oxidized triclosan to H2O and CO2 without any by-products within 2 hours. Photocatalysis by titanium dioxide (TiO2) under LEDs was possible, having a degradation rate of 53% in an 8 hours essay. The degradation rate of the Fenton reaction, UV light and sunlight showed degradation between 90% and 95%. The results are reported to the data observed without statistic support, since this was not possible during the work period. Hydroquinone specie and 2,4-dichlorophenol by-products were identified in the first hour of photocatalysis by UV. A common compound, possibly identified has C7O4H , was present at the degradation by UV, sunlight and LEDs and was concluded to be a contaminant. In the future more studies in the use of LEDs should be undertaken given the advantages of long durability and low consumption of energy of these lamps and that due to their negative impact on the environment fluorescent lamps are being progressively made unavailable by governments, requiring new solutions to be found. Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions can also be costly processes given the expensive reagents used.

In recent years, some epidemiologic studies have attributed adverse effects of air pollutants on health not only to particles and sulfur dioxide but also to photochemical air pollutants (nitrogen dioxide and ozone). The effects are usually small, leading to some inconsistencies in the results of the studies. Furthermore, the different methodologic approaches of the studies used has made it difficult to derive generic conclusions. We provide here a quantitative summary of the short-term effects of photochemical air pollutants on mortality in seven Spanish cities involved in the EMECAM project, using generalized additive models from analyses of single and multiple pollutants. Nitrogen dioxide and ozone data were provided by seven EMECAM cities (Barcelona, Gijón, Huelva, Madrid, Oviedo, Seville, and Valencia). Mortality indicators included daily total mortality from all causes excluding external causes, daily cardiovascular mortality, and daily respiratory mortality. Individual estimates, obtained from city-specific generalized additive Poisson autoregressive models, were combined by means of fixed effects models and, if significant heterogeneity among local estimates was found, also by random effects models. Significant positive associations were found between daily mortality (all causes and cardiovascular) and NO(2), once the rest of air pollutants were taken into account. A 10 microg/m(3) increase in the 24-hr average 1-day NO(2)level was associated with an increase in the daily number of deaths of 0.43% [95% confidence interval (CI), -0.003-0.86%] for all causes excluding external. In the case of significant relationships, relative risks for cause-specific mortality were nearly twice as much as that for total mortality for all the photochemical pollutants. Ozone was independently related only to cardiovascular daily mortality. No independent statistically significant relationship between photochemical air pollutants and respiratory mortality was found. The results in this study suggest that, given the present levels of photochemical pollutants, people living in Spanish cities are exposed to health risks derived from air pollution.

Diphenylamine was chemically attached to depolymerised natural rubber by photochemical reaction. The rubber-bound diphenylamine was characterised by TLC, HNMR, IR and TGA. The efficiency and permanence of the bound diphenylamine was compared with conventional amine type antioxidant in natural rubber vulcanizates. The rubber-bound diphenylamine was found to be less volatile and less extractable compared to the conventional antioxidant. The vulcanizates showed improved ageing resistance in comparison to vulcanizates containing conventional antioxidant . Also, the presence of liquid rubber-bound diphenylamine reduces the amount of plasticiser required for compounding.
