With the recent advances in technology and miniaturization of devices such as GPS or IMU, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles became a feasible platform for a Remote Sensing applications. The use of UAVs compared to the conventional aerial platforms provides a set of advantages such as higher spatial resolution of the derived products. UAV - based imagery obtained by a user grade cameras introduces a set of problems which have to be solved, e. g. rotational or angular differences or unknown or insufficiently precise IO and EO camera parameters. In this work, UAV - based imagery of RGB and CIR type was processed using two different workflows based on PhotoScan and VisualSfM software solutions resulting in the DSM and orthophoto products. Feature detection and matching parameters influence on the result quality as well as a processing time was examined and the optimal parameter setup was presented. Products of the both workflows were compared in terms of a quality and a spatial accuracy. Both workflows were compared by presenting the processing times and quality of the results. Finally, the obtained products were used in order to demonstrate vegetation classification. Contribution of the IHS transformations was examined with respect to the classification accuracy.

The bridge inspection industry has yet to utilize a rapidly growing technology that shows promise to help improve the inspection process. This thesis investigates the abilities that 3D photogrammetry is capable of providing to the bridge inspector for a number of deterioration mechanisms. The technology can provide information about the surface condition of some bridge components, primarily focusing on the surface defects of a concrete bridge which include cracking, spalling and scaling. Testing was completed using a Canon EOS 7D camera which then processed photos using AgiSoft PhotoScan to align the photos and develop models. Further processing of the models was done using ArcMap in the ArcGIS 10 program to view the digital elevation models of the concrete surface. Several experiments were completed to determine the ability of the technique for the detection of the different defects. The cracks that were able to be resolved in this study were a 1/8 inch crack at a distance of two feet above the surface. 3D photogrammetry was able to be detect a depression of 1 inch wide with 3/16 inch depth which would be sufficient to measure any scaling or spalling that would be required be the inspector. The percentage scaled or spalled was also able to be calculated from the digital elevation models in ArcMap. Different camera factors including the distance from the defects, number of photos and angle, were also investigated to see how each factor affected the capabilities. 3D photogrammetry showed great promise in the detection of scaling or spalling of the concrete bridge surface.

The Italian territory offers a wide range of treasures in the field of Cultural Assets. This is a highly relevant property, which needs an accurate management and preservation performed by appropriate tools, also giving attention to the maintenance and safeguard from risk factors. Nowadays the increasing development of new digital technologies, added by remarkable steps forward got by the subject of Geomatic makes possible an efficient integration among different techniques, helped also by spread of solutions to improve the data import-export and transmission between different devices. The main objective of this thesis is to experience the photogrammetric restitution implemented in a commercial software of digital photogrammetry, in order to generate a dense 3D model of the facade of the Basilica Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. The 1st Chapter, after a general introduction regarding the 3D survey of Cultural Heritage and some considerations linked to the use of digital photogrammetry in this field, is focused to analyze the case of stereoscopic and the monoscopic approach. In particular, it develops the theme of close-range photogrammetry. The 2nd Chapter, exposes the theme of digital images, from color theory until their appearing on the monitor. The 3rd Chapter, develops the case study of the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the historical, architectural and religious of the same. Also, it is examined the issue of photogrammetry and laser scanning of the case study. The final part of the same chapter, treats the processing of data processing the software Agisoft PhotoScan, in order to generate, by means of Structure from Motion technique, a digital geometric 3D model of the Basilica Facade. The digital model has been scaled on the basis of measurements made on the field. With the software it was possible to accomplish the three phases of the photogrammetric data processing: internal orientation, exterior orientation and restitution.
