The present research investigates the uptake of phosphate ions from aqueous solutions using acidified laterite (ALS), a by-product from the production of ferric aluminium sulfate using laterite. Phosphate adsorption experiments were performed in batch systems to determine the amount of phosphate adsorbed as a function of solution pH, adsorbent dosage and thermodynamic parameters per fixed P concentration. Kinetic studies were also carried out to study the effect of adsorbent particle sizes. The maximum removal capacity of ALS observed at pH 5 was 3.68 mg P g-1. It was found that as the adsorbent dosage increases, the equilibrium pH decreases, so an adsorbent dosage of 1.0 g L-1 of ALS was selected. Adsorption capacity (qm) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was found to be 2.73 mg g-1. Kinetic experimental data were mathematically well described using the pseudo first-order model over the full range of the adsorbent particle size. The adsorption reactions were endothermic, and the process of adsorption was favoured at high temperature; the ΔG and ΔH values implied that the main adsorption mechanism of P onto ALS is physisorption. The desorption studies indicated the need to consider a NaOH 0.1M solution as an optimal solution for practical regeneration applications.

A barrier to the domestication of the phosphorus (P) sensitive Australian species Caustis blakei (Cyperaceae) is the standard production systems used commercially which invariably result in problems associated either with P deficiency or P toxicity. This paper reports on the growth responses of Caustis blakei cv. M63 to applications of fertiliser P as either monocalcium phosphate (MCP) or granulated Guano Gold (R) rock phosphate (RP) in two soils with different capacities to adsorb P. The Caustis M63 plants grown in the two soils did not show P toxicity symptoms when fertilised with RP, but shoot dry weight was 30-60% lower than the control in both soils at the highest rate of MCP-P application (156 kg ha(-1), 184 g m(-3)) and this was associated with visible symptoms of drying of the tips of the ultimate branchlets, in the Mt Cotton soil only. The greatest shoot and root dry weights were achieved by plants grown in the higher P adsorbing Palmwoods soil fertilised with RP at P rates of 30-184 g m(-3). Caustis plants grown in the Palmwoods soil had 2.3 times greater root dry weights than plants grown in the Mt Cotton soil irrespective of the P fertiliser type used. Caustis plants growing in Mt Cotton soil which did not receive P showed significantly lower shoot and root dry weight when compared to plants in the Palmwoods soil, probably due to the low initial bicarbonate-extractable P and the high buffering capacity of the Mt Cotton soil. The P concentration in shoots of Caustis fertilised with MCP at 184 g m(-3) was higher when grown in Mt Cotton soil (0.22%) than in the Palmwoods soil (0.15%). The P concentration was lower in the terminal ultimate branchlets (TUB); 0.15% for the Mt Cotton soil and 0.10% for the Palmwoods soil, suggesting that shoots would provide a more useful indicator of P toxicity than the TUB. It is interesting to speculate as to why plants in the Palmwoods soil showed greater root growth and fewer symptoms of P toxicity. This could be because the Palmwoods soil had the greater P adsorption capacity. These results indicate in ground production of Caustis cut foliage will require careful management of P nutrition and understanding of the complex soil/plant interactions associated with the acquisition of P. In this article, we reported a new method in which molybdenum heteropolyacid salt was selected to mix with lanthanum oxide and bentonite, respectively, and the dipping method was used to prepare the new composites of heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide, heteropolyacid salt–bentonite, and heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide–bentonite. We observed that the composites have a better removal effect for phosphorus by control of the ratio and calcination temperature. The effect of quantity, adsorption time, phosphorus wastewater concentration, and pH value of composites on phosphorus adsorption was studied. We also found that the removal rate of phosphorus by the composite of heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxides increases up to 99.1% under the condition of 1:1 mass ratio and 500°C of calcination temperature. IR and XRD studies suggest that molybdenum heteropolyacid salt has been loaded to lanthanum oxide carrier successfully and heteropolyacid salt keeps the original Keggin structure. Heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide has a good adsorption effect on phosphorus under the condition of 0.15 g of the composite, 90 min of adsorption time, phosphorus concentration of 50 mg L−1, and pH value of 3. The adsorption of phosphorus corresponds with the Langmuir isotherm model and Lagergren first-order kinetics equation. Therefore, the composite has excellent absorption ability and was competent in removing phosphorus with a low concentration from aqueous solution. It could be a great potential adsorbent for the removal of phosphorus in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

The Xiangxi River is the first middling tributary of the Changjiang River near the Three Gorges Dam. The River is subject to phosphorus pollution mainly from industrial wastewater. As the water quality of the Xiangxi River could directly influence the water quality of the Three Gorges Reservoir, the research on phosphorus levels and its change in the sediment profile of the Xiangxi River could provide useful information in the dynamic changes in the system, thereby offering options for mitigative measures. Water and sediment samples from lower reaches of Xiangxi River were collected and the different forms of phosphorus in sediments of the Xiangxi River were studied. The concentrations of total phosphorus in sediment ranged from 757.67 to 1438.54 mg/kg. Inorganic phosphorus concentrations ranged from 684.63 to 1055.58 mg/kg. Phosphorus contamination was serious in some parts of the Xiangxi River. With an average concentration of 635.17 mg/kg, calcium-bound phosphorus is the main form among different inorganic phosphorus forms. Labile phosphorus and iron/aluminum-bound phosphorus measured 3.40, 0.05and 35.28 mg/kg, respectively. The mobilization potential of phosphorus of sediments was studied through adsorption and release experiments. The equilibrium concentration of phosphorus adsorption and release was around 0.1 mg/L. The initial concentrations of phosphorus in the overlying water and the sediments have obvious effect on phosphorus mobilization potential. In addition, the release rate of phosphorus in sediment increased with water depth.

Phosphorus is one of the major factor that limits agricultural productivity in most tropical soils. The objective of this study was to assess P transformations and availability in a soil cropped to brachiaria (Urochloa ruziziensis) and white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). The study was carried out in a greenhouse at Botucatu, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Brachiaria and white lupin were grown in pots with soil fertilized with 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80mg dm-3 P. The plants were grown for 60 days, when they were harvested and the soil was sampled. Dry matter yields of both species were increased with P rates. Soil bioactive P is increased with P fertilization, but is not affected by the plant species. White lupin is more effective in taking up the organic soil P, but Brachiaria was more effective in reducing the soil maximum P adsorption capacity.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility of mapping adsorbed phosphorus through soil color and magnetic susceptibility. The experiment was done in a 380-ha sugarcane area, which included four types of Oxisols, with different texture and natural fertility. Two hundred and forty-one soil samples were collected at 0.00-0.25-m depth. The soil redness index was calculated from sample values of hue, value, and chroma, obtained with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Regression models were adjusted between adsorbed phosphorus and soil magnetic susceptibility or redness index. Data spatial dependence was evaluated with geostatistics. Magnetic susceptibility is significantly correlated to adsorbed phosphorus, which allows it to be used as a component in pedotransfer functions for indirect quantification of soil adsorbed phosphorus. The redness index and the magnetic susceptibility show spatial dependency with adsorbed phosphorus. Soil magnetic susceptibility and redness index, evaluated with diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, can aid in the mapping and identification of areas with different phosphorus adsorption potential.

ABSTRACT; considering the diversity of environmental impacts related to dam reservoirs, this study aims at verifying the suitability of sediments accumulated in tropical climates, as agricultural resource. We have studied two Brazilian reservoirs, Três Marias and Tucuruí, whose sediments were classified, respectively, as silty clay and clayey silt. The accumulated material has medium contents of organic matter, acid values of pH(H20), high contents of Fe203 and Al203, and low diversity of clay mineral groups (only illite and kaolinite). Although sediments have significant amounts of phosphorus, the available form of this element never exceeds 1%. Data on statistical analysis of clusters, Pearson correlations and chemical fractionation of inorganic phosphorus, indicates that phosphorus adsorption capacity of sediments is predominantly associated with Fe. Even considering the low levels of the readily available form of phosphorus, for most variables, sediments exceed medium values for mineral soils, making this material advantageous for plant nutrition.

Nano zero valent iron (NZVI) prepared by reducing natural goethite in hydrogen at 550 °C was used to remove phosphate. The effect of particle size, reaction time, NZVI dose, pH, initial phosphorus concentration, and oxygen amount in reaction system on phosphorus removal was investigated. The characterization of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption and desorption (BET analysis), transmission electron microscope (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope with a energy dispersive X-ray detector (FESEM/EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that nanoscale of iron (around 80–150 nm length and 5–30 nm width) was prepared successfully with high dispersion and relative large surface area around 22 m2/g. The results of batch experiments and XPS analysis suggested that this kind of NZVI had a good performance on removal of phosphate (over 99%) despite in slightly acidic media as the initial concentration of P was 5 mg/L. The reason was ascribed to the effective corrosion of this NZVI under the function of proton and dissolved oxygen in spite of the existence of thin passive films.
