X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectroscopic techniques have been employed to study surface segregation and oxidation of Cu-1 at%Sn, Cu-9at%Pd and Cu-25at%Pd alloys. Both Cu-Pd(9%) and Cu-Pd(25%) alloys show segregation of Cu when heated above 500 K. The Pd concentration was reduced by 50% at 750 K compared to the bulk composition; the enthalpy of segregation of Cu is around - 6kJ/mol. Sn segregation is seen from 470 to 650 K in the Cu-Sn(1%) alloy, and a saturation plateau of Sn concentration above 650 K is observed. Surface oxidation of Cu-Sn(1%) and Cu-Pd(9%) alloys at 500 K showed the formation of Cu2O on the surface with total suppression of Sn or Pd on the respective alloy surfaces. On vacuum annealing the oxidised Cu-Sn alloy surface at 550 K, a displacement reaction 2Cu2O+Sn→4Cu+SnO2 was observed. However, under similar annealing of the oxidised Cu-Pd(9%) alloy surface at 500 K, oxide oxygen was totally desorbed leaving the Cu-Pd alloy surface clean. In the case of the Cu-Pd(25%) alloy, only dissociatively chemisorbed oxygen was seen at 500 K which desorbed at the same temperature. Oxygen spill-over from copper to palladium is suggested as the mechanism of oxygen desorption from the oxidised Cu-Pd alloy surfaces.

We report herein highly efficient photocatalysts comprising supported nanoparticles (NPs) of gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) alloys, which utilize visible light to catalyse the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions at ambient temperature. The alloy NPs strongly absorb visible light, energizing the conduction electrons of NPs which produce highly energetic electrons at the surface sites. The surface of the energized NPs activates the substrates and these particles exhibit good activity on a range of typical Suzuki reaction combinations. The photocatalytic efficiencies strongly depend on the Au:Pd ratio of the alloy NPs, irradiation light intensity and wavelength. The results show that the alloy nanoparticles efficiently couple thermal and photonic energy sources to drive Suzuki reactions. Results of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that transfer of the light-excited electrons from the nanoparticle surface to the reactant molecules adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface activates the reactants. The knowledge acquired in this study may inspire further studies of new efficient photocatalysts and a wide range of organic syntheses driven by sunlight.

Nanoparticles of Ag-Pd and Gu-Pd alloys with diameters in the 5-40 nm range have been prepared over the entire range of compositions, by employing the heterogeneous reaction of dry methanol or ethanol with intimate mixtures of AgNO3+PdOx and CuOx+PdOx, respectively. The nanoscale alloys have been characterized by energy-dispersive Xray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All the alloy particles possess the fee structure and can be obtained in bulk quantities.

Ternary alloys of nickel-palladium-phosphorus and iron-palladium- phosphorus containing 20 atomic % phosphorus were rapidly quenched from the liquid state. The structure of the quenched alloys was investigated by X-ray diffraction. Broad maxima in the diffraction patterns, indicative of a glass-like structure, were obtained for 13 to 73 atomic % nickel and 13 to 44 atomic % iron, with palladium adding up to 80%.
Radial distribution functions were computed from the diffraction data and yielded average interatomic distances and coordination numbers. The structure of the amorphous alloys could be explained in terms of structural units analogous to those existing in the crystalline Pd3P, Ni3P and Fe3P phases, with iron or nickel substituting for palladium. A linear relationship between interatomic distances and composition, similar to Vegard's law, was shown for these metallic glasses.
Electrical resistivity measurements showed that the quenched alloys were metallic. Measurements were performed from liquid helium temperatures (4.2°K) up to the vicinity of the melting points (900°K- 1000°K). The temperature coefficient in the glassy state was very low, of the order of 10-4/°K. A resistivity minimum was found at low temperature, varying between 9°K and 14°K for Nix-Pd80-x -P20 and between 17°K and 96°K for Fex-Pd80-x -P20, indicating the presence of a Kondo effect. Resistivity measurements, with a constant heating rate of about 1.5°C/min,showed progressive crystallization above approximately 600°K.
The magnetic moments of the amorphous Fe-Pd-P alloys were measured as a function of magnetic field and temperature. True ferromagnetism was found for the alloys Fe32-Pd48-P20 and Fe44-Pd36-P20 with Curie points at 165° K and 380° K respectively. Extrapolated values of the saturation magnetic moments to 0° K were 1.70 µB and 2.10 µB respectively. The amorphous alloy Fe23-Pd57-P20 was assumed to be superparamagnetic. The experimental data indicate that phosphorus contributes to the decrease of moments by electron transfer, whereas palladium atoms probably have a small magnetic moment. A preliminary investigation of the Ni-Pd-P amorphous alloys showed that these alloys are weakly paramagnetic.

The amorphous phases of the Pd-Cu-P system has been obtained using the technique of rapidly quenching from the liquid state. Broad maxima in the diffraction pattern were obtained in the X-ray diffraction studies which are indicative of a glass-like structure. The composition range over which the amorphous solid phase is retained for the Pd-Cu-P system is (Pd100-xCux)80P20 with 10 ≤ x ≤ 50 and (Pd65Cu35)100-yPy with 15 ≤ y ≤ 24 and (Pd60Cu40)100-yPy with 15 ≤ y ≤ 24.
The electrical resistivity for the Pd-Cu-P alloys decreases with temperature as T2 at low temperatures and as T at high temperatures up to the crystallization temperature. The structural scattering model of the resistivity proposed by Sinha and the spin-fluctuation resistivity model proposed by Hasegawa are re-examined in the light of the similarity of this result to the Pt-Ni-P and Pd-Ni-P systems. Objections are raised to these interpretations of the resistivity results and an alternate model is proposed consistent with the new results on Pd-Cu-P and the observation of similar effects in crystalline transition metal alloys. The observed negative temperature coefficients of resistivity in these amorphous alloys are thus interpreted as being due to the modification of the density of states with temperature through the electron-phonon interaction. The weak Pauli paramagnetism of the Pd-Cu-P, Pt-Ni-P and Pd-Ni-P alloys is interpreted as being modifications of the transition d-states as a result of the formation of strong transition metal-metalloid bonds rather than a large transfer of electrons from the glass former atoms (P in this case) to the d-band of the transition metal in a rigid band picture.

The influence of composition on the structure and on the electric and magnetic properties of amorphous Pd-Mn-P and Pd-Co-P prepared by rapid quenching techniques were investigated in terms of (1) the 3d band filling of the first transition metal group, (2) the phosphorus concentration effect which acts as an electron donor and (3) the transition metal concentration.
The structure is essentially characterized by a set of polyhedra subunits essentially inverse to the packing of hard spheres in real space. Examination of computer generated distribution functions using Monte Carlo random statistical distribution of these polyhedra entities demonstrated tile reproducibility of the experimentally calculated atomic distribution function. As a result, several possible "structural parameters" are proposed such as: the number of nearest neighbors, the metal-to-metal distance, the degree of short-range order and the affinity between metal-metal and metal-metalloid. It is shown that the degree of disorder increases from Ni to Mn. Similar behavior is observed with increase in the phosphorus concentration.
The magnetic properties of Pd-Co-P alloys show that they are ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature between 272 and 399°K as the cobalt concentration increases from 15 to 50 at.%. Below 20 at.% Co the short-range exchange interactions which produce the ferromagnetism are unable to establish a long-range magnetic order and a peak in the magnetization shows up at the lowest temperature range . The electric resistivity measurements were performed from liquid helium temperatures up to the vicinity of the melting point (900°K). The thermomagnetic analysis was carried out under an applied field of 6.0 kOe. The electrical resistivity of Pd-Co-P shows the coexistence of a Kondo-like minimum with ferromagnetism. The minimum becomes less important as the transition metal concentration increases and the coefficients of ℓn T and T^2 become smaller and strongly temperature dependent. The negative magnetoresistivity is a strong indication of the existence of localized moment.
The temperature coefficient of resistivity which is positive for Pd- Fe-P, Pd-Ni-P, and Pd-Co-P becomes negative for Pd-Mn-P. It is possible to account for the negative temperature dependence by the localized spin fluctuation model and the high density of states at the Fermi energy which becomes maximum between Mn and Cr. The magnetization curves for Pd-Mn-P are typical of those resulting from the interplay of different exchange forces. The established relationship between susceptibility and resistivity confirms the localized spin fluctuation model. The magnetoresistivity of Pd-Mn-P could be interpreted in tenns of a short-range magnetic ordering that could arise from the Rudennan-Kittel type interactions.

Ti45Zr35Ni20-xPdx (x = 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7, at%) alloys were prepared by melt-spinning. The phase structure and electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of melt-spun alloys were investigated. The melt-spun alloys were icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, and the quasi-lattice constant increased with increasing x value. The maximum discharge capacity of alloy electrodes increased from 79 mAh/g (x = 0) to 148 mAh/g (x = 7). High-rate dis-chargeability and cycling stability were also enhanced with the increase of Pd content. The improvement in the electrochemical hydrogen storage characteristics may be ascribed to better electrochemical activity and oxidation resistance of Pd than that of Ni.

The effect of the bath pH on the electrodeposition of nanocrystalline Pd-Co alloys and on their magnetic properties was studied. The pH practically did not affect the alloy composition. Conversely, the pH showed a significant influence on the shape and size of crystallites. Two different crystallites morphology were observed depending on the bath pH. A crystallite size ranging from 18.2 to 30 nm was obtained from X-ray diffractometry (XRD) patterns using the Scherrer's method. Also from the XRD patterns the lattice strain percentage was calculated and correlated with the residual stress, which probably originated during the film electrodeposition on the substrate. Some alloy magnetic properties showed small variations. In contrast, high and unexpected coercivities were obtained reaching a maximum of 1.69 kOe at pH 5.5. The high coercivity values were attributed to the presence of residual stress at the film-substrate interface, which increased as the bath pH and crystallite size decrease, both of them contributing simultaneously to increase in coercivity. Nanocrystalline Pd-Co alloys were obtained by electrodeposition from an ammoniacal chloride bath. The influence of the crystallite size and the residual stress on the magnetic properties of the alloys was investigated. The residual stress increased as the applied current density was increased. It was associated to the high nucleation rate during electrodeposition and correlated to the lattice strain, estimated from the XRD patterns. Also from the XRD patterns the average crystallite size and the lattice constant were determined by Scherrer's and Rietveld's methods, respectively. Both parameters were directly influenced by the applied current density. Magnetic properties such as coercivity, remanence, saturation magnetization and squareness showed strong dependence on the residual stress and crystallite size. Coercivity higher than 1 kOe was achieved when a high current density was applied. High coercivity was attributed to the presence of residual stress and to the small crystallite size of deposits. The selective oxidation of crotyl alcohol to crotonaldehyde over ultrathin Au overlayers on Pd(1 1 1) and Au/Pd(1 1 1) surface alloys has been investigated by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mass spectrometry. Pure gold is catalytically inert towards crotyl alcohol which undergoes reversible adsorption. In contrast, thermal processing of a 3.9 monolayer (ML) gold overlayer allows access to a range of AuPd surface alloy compositions, which are extremely selective towards crotonaldehyde production, and greatly reduce the extent of hydrocarbon decomposition and eventual carbon laydown compared with base Pd(1 1 1). XPS and CO titrations suggest that palladium-rich surface alloys offer the optimal balance between alcohol oxidative dehydrogenation activity while minimising competitive decomposition pathways, and that Pd monomers are not the active surface ensemble for such selox chemistry over AuPd alloys. Metallic glasses are of interest because of their mechanical properties. They are ductile as well as brittle. This is true of Pd77.5Cu6Si16.5, a ternary glassy alloy. Actually, the most stable metallic glasses are those which are alloys of noble or transition metals A general formula is postulated as T70–80G30-20where T stands for one or several 3d transition elements, and includes the metalloid glass formers. Another general formula is A3B to A5B where B is a metalloid. A computer method utilising the MIGAP computer program of Kaufman is used to calculate the miscibility gap over a range of temperatures. The precipitation of a secondary crystalline phase is postulated around 1500K. This could produce a dispersed phase composite with interesting high temperature-strength properties.

Core-level binding energies of the component metals in bimetallic clusters of various compositions in the Ni-Cu, Au-Ag, Ni-Pd, and Cu-Pd systems have been measured as functions of coverage or cluster size, after having characterized the clusters with respect to sizes and compositions. The core-level binding energy shifts, relative to the bulk metals, at large coverages or cluster size, Delta E(a), are found to be identical to those of bulk alloys. By substracting the Delta E(a) values from the observed binding energy shifts, Delta E, we obtain the shifts, Delta E(c), due to cluster size. The Delta E(c) values in all the alloy systems increase with the decrease in cluster size. These results establish the additivity of the binding energy shifts due to alloying and cluster size effects in bimetallic clusters.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Nd-Pd-O at 1350 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 13 different compositions and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. The binary oxides PdO and NdO were not stable at 1350 K. Two ternary oxides Nd4PdO7 and Nd2Pd2O5 were identified. Solid and liquid alloys, as well as the intermetallics NdPd3 and NdPd5, were found to be in equilibrium with Nd2O3. Based on the phase relations, three solidstate cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of PdO and the two ternary oxides. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MP a as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements, conducted from 950 to 1425 K, indicated the presence of a third ternary oxide Nd2PdO4, stable below 1135 (±10) K. Additional cells were designed to study this compound. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of PdO (†f G 0) was measured from 775 to 1125 Kusing two separate cell designs against the primary reference standard for oxygen chemical potential. Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system Nd-Pd-O were also developed.
