Comment on "Electron collisional excitation of argon-like Ni XI using the Breit-Pauli R-matrix method" [Eur. Phys. J. D 42, 235-241 (2007)] - Electron impact excitation of Ni XI

In a recent paper, Verma et al. [Eur. Phys. J. D 42, 235 (2007)] have reported results for energy levels, radiative rates, collision strengths, and effective collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 17 levels of the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6))3s(2)3p(6), 3s(2)3p(5)3d and 3s3p(6)3d configurations of Ni XI. They adopted the CIV3 and R-matrix codes for the generation of wavefunctions and the scattering process, respectively. In this paper, through two independent calculations performed with the fully relativistic DARC (along with GRASP) and FAC codes, we demonstrate that their results are unreliable. New data are presented and their accuracy is assessed.

Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculation of fine-structure effective collision strengths for the electron impact excitation of Mg V

Context. Electron-impact excitation collision strengths are required for the analysis and interpretation of stellar observations.
Aims. This calculation aims to provide effective collision strengths for the Mg V ion for a larger number of transitions and for a greater temperature range than previously available, using collision strength data that include contributions from resonances.
Methods. A 19-state Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculation was performed. The target states are represented by configuration interaction wavefunctions and consist of the 19 lowest LS states, having configurations 2s22p4, 2s2p5, 2p6, 2s22p33s, and 2s22p33p. These target states give rise to 37 fine-structure levels and 666 possible transitions. The effective collision strengths were calculated by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities.
Results. The non-zero effective collision strengths for transitions between the fine-structure levels are given for electron temperatures in the range = 3.0 - 7.0. Data for transitions among the 5 fine-structure levels arising from the 2s22p4 ground state configurations, seen in the UV range, are discussed in the paper, along with transitions in the EUV range – transitions from the ground state 3P levels to 2s2p5?3P levels. The 2s22p4?1D–2s2p5?1P transition is also noted. Data for the remaining transitions are available at the CDS.

Electron scattering by atoms and ions using the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian:An R-matrix approach

The R-matrix method describing the scattering of low-energy electrons by complex atoms and ions is extended to include terms of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. An application is made to the astrophysically important 1s 2s S-1s 2s2p P transition in Fe XXIII, where in the most accurate calculations carried out all terms of the 1s 2s, 1s2s2p and 1s2p configurations are included in the expansion describing the collision. This gives up to 28 coupled channels for each total angular momentum and parity which are solved on a CRAY-1. The collision strengths are increased by more than a factor of two from their non-relativistic values at all energies considered.

Photoionization cross sections for O-like S IX: a Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculation

In this paper we present photoionization cross sections for the lowest five states of O-like S IX (1s(2)2s(2)2p(4) P-3(0,1,2), D-1(2), S-1(0)). The relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix codes were utilized including all terms of the 2s(2)2p(3), 2s2p(4), 2p(5), 2s(2)2p(2)3s, 3p, 3d and 2s2p(3)3s, 3p, 3d configurations in the expansion of the collision wavefunction for S X. It was also found that to achieve convergence of the low-lying energy separations of the target levels, an additional 21 configuration functions needed to be included in the configuration interaction expansion, incorporating two-electron excitations from the 2s and 2p shells to the 3s, 3p and 3d shells. The present work thus constitutes the most sophisticated photoionization evaluation for ground and metastable levels of the S IX ion. Direct comparisons have been made with the only available data found on the OPEN-ADAS database between level resolved contributions of the spectrum. This comparison for the background cross section exhibits excellent agreement at all photon energies for each partial photoionization cross section contribution investigated. Finally, the autoionizing bound states arising from numerous open channels have also been investigated and identified using the QB approach, a procedure for analyzing resonances in atomic and molecular collision theory which exploits the analytic properties of R-matrix theory. Major Rydberg resonance series are also presented and tabulated for the dominant linewidths considered.

Electron-impact excitation of Fe2: a comparison of intermediate coupling frame transformation, Breit-Pauli and Dirac R-matrix calculations

Modeling the spectral emission of low-charge iron group ions enables the diagnostic determination of the local physical conditions of many cool plasma environments such as those found in H II regions, planetary nebulae, active galactic nuclei etc. Electron-impact excitation drives the population of the emitting levels and, hence, their emissivities. By carrying-out Breit-Pauli and intermediate coupling frame transformation (ICFT) R-matrix calculations for the electron-impact excitation of Fe$^{2+}$ which both use the exact same atomic structure and the same close-coupling expansion, we demonstrate the validity of the application of the powerful ICFT method to low-charge iron group ions. This is in contradiction to the finding of Bautista et al. [Ap.J.Lett, 718, L189, (2010)] who carried-out ICFT and Dirac R-matrix calculations for the same ion. We discuss possible reasons.

Photoionization of Cl-like Argon using the Breit-Pauli R-matrix method

Here we present the photoionization cross sections for the ground and metastable states of Cl-like Argon by exploiting the fully relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix computer codes to determine these transitions of interest. We compare our work with previous theoretical and experimental results and present a detailed investigation into the model of Ar III, the resonant structure and identification process.
