Catharine Waugh McCullouch papers in the Mary Earhart Dillon collection, 1869-1945

Collection primarily documents McCulloch's research on women's legal status, and her work with the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and the League of Women Voters. There is also documentation of women in the legal profession, of McCulloch's friendships with the other women suffragists and lawyers, and some biographical material. The papers contain little information about her family or social life.

A névoa do tempo: o pensamento utópico na trilogia crítico-religiosa de José Saramago

Na trilogia crítico-religiosa de José Saramago, constituída pelos romances Memorial do Convento, O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo e Caim, torna-se possível perceber a presença recorrente do pensamento utópico, que, nas três obras em questão, não se revela como percepção idealística de uma realidade imutável, mas, tendo em vista a perspectiva filosófica de Ernst Bloch, revela-se como consciência aguda tanto do processo histórico quanto da práxis libertária. Na dinâmica constitutiva dessa consciência, pode-se delinear o encontro interativo dos tempos: um passado reconstituído criticamente pela ótica contemporânea, um presente permeado por intensa militância ideológica e, principalmente, a consciência de um futuro aberto como possibilidade concreta, o que viabiliza, naqueles romances, aspirações humanas por transformações radicais da ordem vigente. Esse encontro dos tempos, do ponto de vista estético-literário, substancializa-se na trilogia por intermédio essencialmente do recurso paródico: a revisitação crítica dos ícones e temas provenientes do universo judaico-cristão. Seja nas imagens desiderativas que retoma, seja no quadro conceitual que ironiza, seja, ainda, na constituição híbrida do romance, que esfacela o teor totalizante da narrativa tradicional, José Saramago parece extrair dos arquétipos religiosos uma intensidade subversiva que, na tessitura ficcional que elabora, atinge e questiona a construção metafísica erigida por séculos de judaísmo e cristianismo. Nos três romances do escritor lusitano, esse processo de releitura do passado aponta não somente para a impossibilidade, no contexto contemporâneo, de experiência com a cosmovisão totalizante da religião ocidental como também para a reconstituição existencial do mundo moderno, uma vez que, a partir de sonhos frustrados daquele passado, se tornaria possível materializar anseios utópicos latentes, represados na memória coletiva. The social construction of cooperation: exchange, identification and collective intentions within the organization

My aim is to develop a theory of cooperation within the organization and empirically test it. Drawing upon social exchange theory, social identity theory, the idea of collective intentions, and social constructivism, the main assumption of my work implies that both cooperation and the organization itself are continually shaped and restructured by actions, judgments, and symbolic interpretations of the parties involved. Therefore, I propose that the decision to cooperate, expressed say as an intention to cooperate, reflects and depends on a three step social process shaped by the interpretations of the actors involved. The first step entails an instrumental evaluation of cooperation in terms of social exchange. In the second step, this “social calculus” is translated into cognitive, emotional and evaluative reactions directed toward the organization. Finally, once the identification process is completed and membership awareness is established, I propose that individuals will start to think largely in terms of “We” instead of “I”. Self-goals are redefined at the collective level, and the outcomes for self, others, and the organization become practically interchangeable. I decided to apply my theory to an important cooperative problem in management research: knowledge exchange within organizations. Hence, I conducted a quantitative survey among the members of the virtual community, “www.borse.it” (n=108). Within this community, members freely decide to exchange their knowledge about the stock market among themselves. Because of the confirmatory requirements and the structural complexity of the theory proposed (i.e., the proposal that instrumental evaluations will induce social identity and this in turn will causes collective intentions), I use Structural Equation Modeling to test all hypotheses in this dissertation. The empirical survey-based study found support for the theory of cooperation proposed in this dissertation. The findings suggest that an appropriate conceptualization of the decision to exchange knowledge is one where collective intentions depend proximally on social identity (i.e., cognitive identification, affective commitment, and evaluative engagement) with the organization, and this identity depends on instrumental evaluations of cooperators (i.e., perceived value of the knowledge received, assessment of past reciprocity, expected reciprocity, and expected social outcomes of the exchange). Furthermore, I find that social identity fully mediates the effects of instrumental motives on collective intentions.

A Coleção de azulejaria antiga da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa : processo de inventário

This thesis presents the process of conducting the inventory of the old tiles collection of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon (FBAUL). This set can be divided into two major groups: the first is integrated in the building, the second consists of a set 2036 loose tiles with a pattern of decorative, ornamental and figuratively, some of which form panels of great value. Due to the existence of a wide variety of unknown provenance tile, stored at random, we feel the need to develop an inventory process, intended to safeguard and preserve these he-ritage objects whose existence was virtually unknown until the beginning of this work. This process continued working methodology started with the identification, photographic survey and labeling, with subsequent filling an inventory sheet. To obtain information about the loose tiles, it was essential to have a previous cleaning the mortar that prevented the reading of existing information in masonry, a process developed with the support of un-dergraduate students. After completion of the above process, we make the assembly of panels existing mostly very fragmented to give some iconographic references. In this process we identified 21 types of patterns belonging to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and 30 figurative and orna-mental panels. We realized then interconnections between them and the sets placed in situ around the building, and some of its tiles have been used to fill spaces or gaps. At the same time, we have created the inventory records, diagnosis and intervention, as well as a database for internal consultation - Excel - organized by a filtering system to allow quick search of all the tiles present in FBAUL. Finally, we will show a room to house the collection of loose tiles, making references to the ideal conditions of the outdoor environment and its packaging. Also we propose a very punc-tual removing some tiles embedded in the walls of the building which form part of panels composed of loose tiles, indicating a proposal to replace the other coherent and complete element belonging to the collection, preferably with a standard reason
