View-Dependent Extraction of Contours with Distance Transforms for Adaptive Polygonal for adaptive polygonal Mesh-Simplification

During decades Distance Transforms have proven to be useful for many image processing applications, and more recently, they have started to be used in computer graphics environments. The goal of this paper is to propose a new technique based on Distance Transforms for detecting mesh elements which are close to the objects' external contour (from a given point of view), and using this information for weighting the approximation error which will be tolerated during the mesh simplification process. The obtained results are evaluated in two ways: visually and using an objective metric that measures the geometrical difference between two polygonal meshes.

This article examines a new lightweight, slim, high energy efficient, light-transmitting, self-supporting envelope system, providing for seamless, free-form designs for use in architectural projects. The system exploits vacuum insulation panel technology. The research was based on envelope components already existing on the market and patents and prototypes built by independent laboratories, especially components implemented with silica gel insulation, as this is the most effective transparent thermal insulation there is today. The tests run on these materials revealed that there is not one that has all the features required of the new envelope model, although some do have properties that could be exploited to generate this envelope, namely, the vacuum chamber of vacuum insulation panels, the use of monolithic aerogel as insulation in some prototypes, and reinforced polyester barriers. These three design components have been combined and tested to design a new, variable geometry, energy-saving envelope system that also solves many of the problems that other studies ascribe to the use of vacuum insulation panels.

This article examines, from the energy viewpoint, a new lightweight, slim, high energy efficient, light-transmitting envelope system, providing for seamless, free-form designs for use in architectural projects. The research was based on envelope components already existing on the market, especially components implemented with granular silica gel insulation, as this is the most effective translucent thermal insulation there is today. The tests run on these materials revealed that there is not one that has all the features required of the new envelope model, although some do have properties that could be exploited to generate this envelope, namely, the vacuum chamber of vacuum insulated panels (VIP), the monolithic aerogel used as insulation in some prototypes, reinforced polyester barriers. By combining these three design components — the high-performance thermal insulation of the vacuum chamber combined with monolithic silica gel insulation, the free-form design potential provided by materials like reinforced polyester and epoxy resins—, we have been able to define and test a new, variable geometry, energy-saving envelope system.

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Spiny Dendrites Using Straightening and Unrolling Transforms

Current understanding of the synaptic organization of the brain depends to a large extent on knowledge about the synaptic inputs to the neurons. Indeed, the dendritic surfaces of pyramidal cells (the most common neuron in the cerebral cortex) are covered by thin protrusions named dendritic spines. These represent the targets of most excitatory synapses in the cerebral cortex and therefore, dendritic spines prove critical in learning, memory and cognition. This paper presents a new method that facilitates the analysis of the 3D structure of spine insertions in dendrites, providing insight on spine distribution patterns. This method is based both on the implementation of straightening and unrolling transformations to move the analysis process to a planar, unfolded arrangement, and on the design of DISPINE, an interactive environment that supports the visual analysis of 3D patterns.

Quintus Curtius before his sources: the episode of Alexander and the Scythians on the Tanais

Quintus Curtius found in his sources a speech where a Scythian censured Alexander, followed by the King’s reply. Curtius drastically abridged this second discourse in order to highlight the criticism of the Macedonian. The Scythian’s words have a striking rhetorical language and some allusions taken from Greek literature, in addition to possible indirect references to Caligula. Curtius declares that he follows his source word-for-word aiming to justify these inconsistencies, but also trying to hide the manipulations he has done to achieve his own narrative purposes.

Este es un homenaje realizado bajo mi entera responsabilidad. En mi opinión no puede cerrarse la edición de ProBiota sin publicar un número sobre quien fue su alma mater. En lo personal, hacedor de un humor irónico increíble, aunque melancólico, con tendencia al abatimiento y a hacerse responsable por todo. Mediador, proclive a “poner la oreja”, con actitud democrática hacia sus laderos, otorgando una prudente libertad de acción a quienes trabajaron o trabajan bajo su jefatura. Fiel simpatizante de River Plate, fan de Clint Eastwood y admirador incondicional de Raúl A. Ringuelet a quien estará eternamente agradecido. Si tuviera que definirlo profesionalmente, al margen de su labor académica formal, diría que es un promotor, un luchador y un historiador innato. Generador de ideas, siempre intentó reunir a aquellos científicos de trayectoria con los jóvenes iniciados en el camino de las ciencias, impulsando el trabajo en equipo. Adem��s de su producción a nivel de su especialidad, promocionó el rescate de trabajos ya editados digitalizándolos con el fin de ponerlos a disposición de todo interesado y despertar el interés de quienes no los conocían, especialmente las publicaciones “incunables” como él las denomina. Poseedor de un espíritu inquieto y motivador, en su camino quedaron algunos intentos frustrados por circunstancias ajenas, pero a su vez, muchísimos logros con aire renovador e integrador y con una marcada originalidad. Sería interesante y necesario que alguien m��s con parecida inquietud, continuara gran parte de esos logros para que no quedaran truncos desperdiciando en parte tanto esfuerzo y constancia. Sólo resta comentar que aunque a veces estuvimos en veredas opuestas siempre nos tendimos la mano en apoyo mutuo. Fuiste mi mejor jefe. Gracias Hugo! Justina Ponte Gómez
