PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between ocular perfusion pressure and color Doppler measurements in patients with glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with primary open-angle glaucoma with visual field deterioration in spite of an intraocular pressure lowered below 21 mm Hg, 20 age-matched patients with glaucoma with stable visual fields, and 20 age-matched healthy controls were recruited. After a 20-minute rest in a supine position, intraocular pressure and color Doppler measurements parameters of the ophthalmic artery and the central retinal artery were obtained. Correlations between mean ocular perfusion pressure and color Doppler measurements parameters were determined. RESULTS: Patients with glaucoma showed a higher intraocular pressure (P <.0008) and a lower mean ocular perfusion pressure (P <.0045) compared with healthy subjects. Patients with deteriorating glaucoma showed a lower mean blood pressure (P =.033) and a lower end diastolic velocity in the central retinal artery (P =.0093) compared with normals. Mean ocular perfusion pressure correlated positively with end diastolic velocity in the ophthalmic artery (R = 0.66, P =.002) and central retinal artery (R = 0.74, P <.0001) and negatively with resistivity index in the ophthalmic artery (R = -0.70, P =.001) and central retinal artery (R = -0.62, P =.003) in patients with deteriorating glaucoma. Such correlations did not occur in patients with glaucoma with stable visual fields or in normal subjects. The correlations were statistically significantly different between the study groups (parallelism of regression lines in an analysis of covariance model) for end diastolic velocity (P =.001) and resistivity index (P =.0001) in the ophthalmic artery, as well as for end diastolic velocity (P =.0009) and resistivity index (P =. 001) in the central retinal artery. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest that alterations in ocular blood flow regulation may contribute to the progression in glaucomatous damage.

Analysis of complex composite structures requires a fine contiguous mesh of threedimensional (3D) solid elements. The embedded element technique is a promising technique for predicting stiffness and stress. This paper presents a new method for enhancing the embedded element with continuum damage mechanics methods for predicting the evolution of damage in fiber reinforced composite structures. Comparison of the model prediction with experimental results reveals an excellent correlation between the tensile strength of quasi-isotropic laminate with an open hole. The embedded element technique allows the fiber reinforcement and matrix domains to be meshed independently and failure is evaluated separately in each domain. The enhanced embedded element approach allows the failure modes to be observed, specifically, the evolution of matrix cracking and fiber rupture. Compared to the traditional contiguous mesh finite element method, the present modelling technique demonstrates a clear advantage in predicting the experimentally observed failure modes and accurate characterisation of intralaminar fracture.

Bearing damage in modern inverter-fed AC drive systems is more common than in motors working with 50 or 60 Hz power supply. Fast switching transients and common mode voltage generated by a PWM inverter cause unwanted shaft voltage and resultant bearing currents. Parasitic capacitive coupling creates a path to discharge current in rotors and bearings. In order to analyze bearing current discharges and their effect on bearing damage under different conditions, calculation of the capacitive coupling between the outer and inner races is needed. During motor operation, the distances between the balls and races may change the capacitance values. Due to changing of the thickness and spatial distribution of the lubricating grease, this capacitance does not have a constant value and is known to change with speed and load. Thus, the resultant electric field between the races and balls varies with motor speed. The lubricating grease in the ball bearing cannot withstand high voltages and a short circuit through the lubricated grease can occur. At low speeds, because of gravity, balls and shaft voltage may shift down and the system (ball positions and shaft) will be asymmetric. In this study, two different asymmetric cases (asymmetric ball position, asymmetric shaft position) are analyzed and the results are compared with the symmetric case. The objective of this paper is to calculate the capacitive coupling and electric fields between the outer and inner races and the balls at different motor speeds in symmetrical and asymmetrical shaft and balls positions. The analysis is carried out using finite element simulations to determine the conditions which will increase the probability of high rates of bearing failure due to current discharges through the balls and races.

Terrorists usually target high occupancy iconic and public buildings using vehicle borne incendiary devices in order to claim a maximum number of lives and cause extensive damage to public property. While initial casualties are due to direct shock by the explosion, collapse of structural elements may extensively increase the total figure. Most of these buildings have been or are built without consideration of their vulnerability to such events. Therefore, the vulnerability and residual capacity assessment of buildings to deliberately exploded bombs is important to provide mitigation strategies to protect the buildings' occupants and the property. Explosive loads and their effects on a building have therefore attracted significant attention in the recent past. Comprehensive and economical design strategies must be developed for future construction. This research investigates the response and damage of reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings together with their load bearing key structural components to a near field blast event. Finite element method (FEM) based analysis was used to investigate the structural framing system and components for global stability, followed by a rigorous analysis of key structural components for damage evaluation using the codes SAP2000 and LS DYNA respectively. The research involved four important areas in structural engineering. They are blast load determination, numerical modelling with FEM techniques, material performance under high strain rate and non-linear dynamic structural analysis. The response and damage of a RC framed building for different blast load scenarios were investigated. The blast influence region for a two dimensional RC frame was investigated for different load conditions and identified the critical region for each loading case. Two types of design methods are recommended for RC columns to provide superior residual capacities. They are RC columns detailing with multi-layer steel reinforcement cages and a composite columns including a central structural steel core. These are to provide post blast gravity load resisting capacity compared to typical RC column against a catastrophic collapse. Overall, this research broadens the current knowledge of blast and residual capacity analysis of RC framed structures and recommends methods to evaluate and mitigate blast impact on key elements of multi-storey buildings.

Cracking of ceramics with tetragonal perovskite grain structure is known to appear at different sites and scale level. The multiscale character of damage depends on the combined effects of electromechanical coupling, prevailing physical parameters and boundary conditions. These detail features are exhibited by application of the energy density criterion with judicious use of the mode I asymptotic and full field solution in the range of r/a = 10(-4) to 10(-2) where r and a are, respectively, the distance to the crack tip and half crack length. Very close to the stationary crack tip, bifurcation is predicted resembling the dislocation emission behavior invoked in the molecular dynamics model. At the macroscopic scale, crack growth is predicted to occur straight ahead with two yield zones to the sides. A multiscale feature of crack tip damage is provided for the first time. Numerical values of the relative distances and bifurcation angles are reported for the PZT-4 ceramic subjected to different electric field to applied stress ratio and boundary conditions that consist of the specification of electric field/mechanical stress, electric displacement/mechanical strain, and mixed conditions. To be emphasized is that the multiscale character of damage in piezoceramics does not appear in general. It occurs only for specific combinations of the external and internal field parameters, elastic/piezoelectric/dielectric constants and specified boundary conditions. Aircraft composite structures must have high stiffness and strength with low weight, which can guarantee the increase of the pay-load for airplanes without losing airworthiness. However, the mechanical behavior of composite laminates is very complex due the inherent anisotropy and heterogeneity. Many researchers have developed different failure progressive analyses and damage models in order to predict the complex failure mechanisms. This work presents a damage model and progressive failure analysis that requires simple experimental tests and that achieves good accuracy. Firstly, the paper explains damage initiation and propagation criteria and a procedure to identify the material parameters. In the second stage, the model was implemented as a UMAT (User Material Subroutine), which is linked to finite element software, ABAQUS (TM), in order to predict the composite structures behavior. Afterwards, some case studies, mainly off-axis coupons under tensile or compression loads, with different types of stacking sequence were analyzed using the proposed material model. Finally, the computational results were compared to the experimental results, verifying the capability of the damage model in order to predict the composite structure behavior. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Stress singularities appear at the extremities of an adhesive bond. They can produce a damage mechanism that we assimilate in this Note to a crack. The energy release rate permits to characterize its evolution. But a very refined mesh would be necessary for a real structure. Using an asymptotic method based on the small thickness of the bond a limit model with a different local behaviour is suggested. It leads to an approximation of the energy release rate

Much research is currently centred on the detection of damage in structures using vibrational data. The work presented here examined several areas of interest in support of a practical technique for identifying and locating damage within bridge structures using apparent changes in their vibrational response to known excitation. The proposed goals of such a technique included the need for the measurement system to be operated on site by a minimum number of staff and that the procedure should be as non-invasive to the bridge traffic-flow as possible. Initially the research investigated changes in the vibrational bending characteristics of two series of large-scale model bridge-beams in the laboratory and these included ordinary-reinforced and post-tensioned, prestressed designs. Each beam was progressively damaged at predetermined positions and its vibrational response to impact excitation was analysed. For the load-regime utilised the results suggested that the infuced damage manifested itself as a function of the span of a beam rather than a localised area. A power-law relating apparent damage with the applied loading and prestress levels was then proposed, together with a qualitative vibrational measure of structural damage. In parallel with the laboratory experiments a series of tests were undertaken at the sites of a number of highway bridges. The bridges selected had differing types of construction and geometric design including composite-concrete, concrete slab-and-beam, concrete-slab with supporting steel-troughing constructions together with regular-rectangular, skewed and heavily-skewed geometries. Initial investigations were made of the feasibility and reliability of various methods of structure excitation including traffic and impulse methods. It was found that localised impact using a sledge-hammer was ideal for the purposes of this work and that a cartridge `bolt-gun' could be used in some specific cases.

Structural analysis in handwritten mathematical expressions focuses on interpreting the recognized symbols using geometrical information such as relative sizes and positions of the symbols. Most existing approaches rely on hand-crafted grammar rules to identify semantic relationships among the recognized mathematical symbols. They could easily fail when writing errors occurred. Moreover, they assume the availability of the whole mathematical expression before being able to analyze the semantic information of the expression. To tackle these problems, we propose a progressive structural analysis (PSA) approach for dynamic recognition of handwritten mathematical expressions. The proposed PSA approach is able to provide analysis result immediately after each written input symbol. This has an advantage that users are able to detect any recognition errors immediately and correct only the mis-recognized symbols rather than the whole expression. Experiments conducted on 57 most commonly used mathematical expressions have shown that the PSA approach is able to achieve very good performance results.

The contact patch and pressure distribution are considered using modified Hertzian simulation. A combined elasto-plastic material modelling available in Abaqus is employed in the simulation. A dynamic load factor of 1.21 is considered in modelling for the wheel load based on a previous study as part of this on going research. Shakedown theorem is employed in this study. A peak pressure load which is above the shakedown limit is determined as input load. As a result, a progressive damage in the railhead has been captured as depicted in the equivalent plastic strain plot.
