Polymeric sensors with improved resistance to organic solvents were produced via the layer-by-layer thin film deposition followed by chemical cross-linking. According to UV-vis spectroscopy, the mass loss of polyaniline/poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyaniline/novolac-type resin based films deposited onto glass slides was less than 20% when they were submitted to successive immersions (up to 3,000 immersion cycles) into commercially available ethanol and gasoline fuel samples. Polyallylamine hydrochloride/nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine films presented similar stability. The electrical responses assessed by impedance spectroscopy of films deposited onto Au-interdigitated microelectrodes were relatively unaffected after continuous or cyclic immersions into both fuels. After these studies, an array including these polymeric sensors was employed to detect adulteration in ethanol and gasoline samples. After principal component analysis, it was possible to conclude that the proposed sensor array is capable to discriminate with remarkable reproducibility ethanol samples containing different amounts of water or else gasoline samples containing different amounts of ethanol. In both examples, more than 90% of data variance was retained in the first principal component. For each type of sample, ethanol and gasoline, it was found a linear correlation between one of the principal components and the sample's composition. These findings allow one to conclude that these films present great potential for the development of reliable and low-cost sensors for fuel analysis in liquid phase.

2-Methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin (GSM) are sub products from algae decomposition and, depending on their concentration, can be toxic: otherwise, they give unpleasant taste and odor to water. For water treatment companies it is important to constantly monitor their presence in the distributed water and avoid further costumer complaints. Lower-cost and easy-to-read instrumentation would be very promising in this regard. In this study, we evaluate the potentiality of an electronic tongue (ET) system based on non-specific polymeric sensors and impedance measurements in monitoring MIB and GSM in water samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the generated data matrix indicated that this ET was capable to perform with remarkable reproducibility the discrimination of these two contaminants in either distilled or tap water, in concentrations as low as 25 ng L-1. Nonetheless, this analysis methodology was rather qualitative and laborious, and the outputs it provided were greatly subjective. Also, data analysis based on PCA severely restricts automation of the measuring system or its use by non-specialized operators. To circumvent these drawbacks, a fuzzy controller was designed to quantitatively perform sample classification while providing outputs in simpler data charts. For instance, the ET along with the referred fuzzy controller performed with a 100% hit rate the quantification of MIB and GSM samples in distilled and tap water. The hit rate could be read directly from the plot. The lower cost of these polymeric sensors allied to the especial features of the fuzzy controller (easiness on programming and numerical outputs) provided initial requirements for developing an automated ET system to monitor odorant species in water production and distribution.

Two kinds of polymeric pH indicators PPF (phenolphthalein-formaldehyde product) and CPF (o-cresolphthalein-formaldehyde product) immobilized cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes (PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA) for optical intermittent determination of high basicity ([OH-] = 1-8 M) based on a kinetic process were developed. In our previous work, we had demonstrated that PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA could perform the determination of high pH values from pH 10.0 to 14.0. Here the discoloring kinetic behaviors of PPF-PVA and CPF-PVA were compared with those of free phenolphthalein, o-cresolphthalein and thymolphthalein. Experimental results and theoretical analysis indicated that the response behaviors of the optodes' membranes in concentrated NaOH solutions were diffusion-independent and still complied with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. In addition, two data analysis methods for determination were presented. One was directly based on the reduced absorbance: the other was based on the discoloring kinetic constant. It was found that the latter could perform a rapid (60 s) and reliable (relative standard deviation: 2.6%) determination for high basicity.

Three pi-electron rich fluorescent supramolecular polymers (1-3) have been synthesized incorporating 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol groups in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling. They were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1, C-13), ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses 1 = 1( 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene; 2 = 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) anthracene; 3 = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(2methyl- 3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene]. Single crystal structures of 1-3 indicated that the incorporation of hydroxy (-OH) groups on the peripheral of the fluorophores helps them to self-associate into an infinite supramolecular polymeric network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the adjacent discrete fluorophore units. All these compounds showed fluorescence characteristics in chloroform solution due to the extended pi-conjugation and were used as selective fluorescent sensors for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics. The changes in photophysical properties of fluorophores (1-3) upon complex formation with electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives were studied in chloroform solution by using fluorescence spectroscopy. All these fluorophores showed the largest quenching response with moderate selectivity for nitroaromatics over various other electron deficient/ rich aromatic compounds tested (Chart 1). Analysis of the fluorescence titration profile of 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3butyn- 2-ol) anthracene fluorophore (2) with 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene/ 2,4-dinitrotoluene provided evidence that this particular fluorophore detects nitroaromatics in the nanomolar range 2.0 ppb for TNT, 13.7 ppb for DNT]. Moreover, sharp visual color change was observed upon mixing nitroaromatic (DNT) with fluorophores (1-3) both in solution as well as in solid phase. Furthermore, the vapor-phase sensing study of thin film of fluorophores (1-3) showed efficient quenching responses for DNT and this sensing process is reproducible. Selective fluorescence quenching response including a sharp visual color change for nitroaromatics make these tested fluorophores (1-3) as potential sensors for nitroaromatic compounds with a detection limit of ppb level.

A 3D-mirror synthetic receptor for ciprofloxacin host–guest interactions and potentiometric transduction is presented. The host cavity was shaped on a polymeric surface assembled with methacrylic acid or 2-vinyl pyridine monomers by radical polymerization. Molecularly imprinted particles were dispersed in 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether and entrapped in a poly(vinyl chloride) matrix. The sensors exhibited a near-Nernstian response in steady state evaluations. Slopes and detection limits ranged from 26.8 to 50.0mVdecade−1 and 1.0×10−5 to 2.7×10−5 mol L−1, respectively. Good selectivity was observed for trimethoprim, enrofloxacin, tetracycline, cysteine, galactose, hydroxylamine, creatinine, ammonium chloride, sucrose, glucose, sulphamerazine and sulfadiazine. The sensors were successfully applied to the determination of ciprofloxacin concentrations in fish and in pharmaceuticals. The method presented offered the advantages of simplicity, accuracy, applicability to colored and turbid samples and automation feasibility, as well as confirming the use of molecularly imprinted polymers as ionophores for organic ion recognition in potentiometric transduction.

PVC supported liquid membrane and carbon paste potentiometric sensors incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin complex as a neutral host molecule were developed for the determination of paracetamol. The measurements were carried out in solution at pH 5.5. Under such conditions paracetamol exists as a neutral molecule. The mechanism of molecular recognition between the Mn(III)-porphyrin and paracetamol, leading to potentiometric signal generation, is discussed. The sensitivity and selectivity toward paracetamol of carbon paste and polymeric liquid membrane electrodes incorporating an Mn(III)-porphyrin host were compared. The applicability of these sensors to the direct determination of paracetamol was checked by performing a recovery test in human plasma.

The fabrication and analytical applications of two types of potentiometric sensors for the determination of ketoconazole (KET) are described. The sensors are based on the use of KET-molybdophosphoric acid (MPA) ion pair as electroactive material. The fabricated sensors include both polymer membrane and carbon paste electrodes. Both sensors showed a linear, stable and near Nernstian slope of 57.8mV=decade and 55.2mV=decade for PVC membrane and carbon paste sensors respectively over a relatively wide range of KET concentration (1×10-2-5×10-5 and 1×10-2-1×10-6). The sensors showed a fast response time of <30 sec and <45 sec. A useful pH range of 3–6 was obtained for both types of sensors. A detection limit of 2.96 10 5M was obtained for PVC membrane sensor and 6.91 10 6M was obtained for carbon paste sensor. The proposed sensors proved to have a good selectivity for KET with respect to a large number of ions. The proposed sensors were successfully applied for the determination of KET in pharmaceutical formulations. The results obtained are in good agreement with the values obtained by the standard method.

The fabrication and electrochemical response characteristics of two novel potentiometric sensors for the selective determination of domperidone (DOM) are described. The two fabricated sensors incorporate DOM–PTA (phosphotungstic acid) ion pair as the electroactive material. The sensors include a PVC membrane sensor and a carbon paste sensor. The sensors showed a linear, stable, and near Nernstian slope of 56.5 and 57.8 mV/decade for PVC membrane and carbon paste sensors, respectively over a relatively wide range of DOM concentration (1.0 9 10-1–1.0 9 10-5 and 1.0 9 10-1–3.55 9 10-6 M). The response time of DOM–PTA membrane sensor was less than 25 s and that in the case of carbon paste sensor was less than 20 s.Auseful pH range of 4–6 was obtained for both types of sensors. A detection limit of 7.36 9 10-5 M was obtained for PVC membrane sensor and 1.0 9 10-6 M was obtained for carbon paste sensor. The proposed sensors showed very good selectivity toDOMin the presence of a large number of other interfering ions. The analytical application of the developed sensors in the determination of the drug in pharmaceutical formulations such as tablets was investigated. The results obtained are in good agreement with the values obtained by the standard method. The sensors were also applied for the determination ofDOMin real samples such as urine by the standard addition method.

There has been significant interest in the methodologies of controlled release for a diverse range of applications spanning drug delivery, biological and chemical sensors, and diagnostics. The advancement in novel substrate-polymer coupling moieties has led to the discovery of self-immolative linkers. This new class of linker has gained popularity in recent years in polymeric release technology as a result of stable bond formation between protecting and leaving groups, which becomes labile upon activation, leading to the rapid disassembly of the parent polymer. This ability has prompted numerous studies into the design and development of self-immolative linkers and the kinetics surrounding their disassembly. This review details the main concepts that underpin self-immolative linker technologies that feature in polymeric or dendritic conjugate systems and outlines the chemistries of amplified self-immolative elimination.

In this paper we describe the electrosynthesis of poly[(2-bromo-5-hexyloxy- 1,4-phenylenevinylene)-co-(1,4-phenylenevinylene)] (BHPPV-co-PPV), a novel conducting copolymer, and its application as active layer of a chemiresistive gas sensor suitable for quantification of ethanol present in ethanol-gasoline mixtures normally present in the fuel tanks of flex-fuel vehicles. This information is crucial for the smooth operation of the engine since it permits optimal air:fuel ratio regulation. The sensor consists of an interdigitated electrode coated with a thin polymer film doped with dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid. On exposure to fuel vapours at room temperature, the device presents a linear correlation between its electrical conductance and the ethanol concentration in the fuel. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Polymeric electroactive blends formed by electropolymerized aniline inside a non-conductive polyacrylamide porous matrix were already shown as suitable materials for the electrocontrolled release of model compounds like safranin. In this paper the intermolecular interactions between the two components of the blend are put in evidence by Raman spectroscopy measurements. Also, in situ optical microscopy was used to follow changes occurring in the polyaniline/polyacrylamide blend during pyrocathecol violet release tests. These two sets of experiments show the possibility of controlling electrochemically the release of both, safranin (a cation) and pyrocathecol violet (an anion) and allow to infer a release mechanism based on the electromechanical properties of the blends explaining the dependence of the release kinetics on the applied potential. Tetracycline release curves for different potentials and pHs are shown and the obtained profiles are in agreement with those expected for a device acting as an electrochemically driven pump due to the artificial muscle properties of the conducting phase of the blends. An amperometric oxygen sensor based on a polymeric nickel-salen (salen = N,N'-ethylene bis(salicylideneiminato)) film coated platinum electrode was developed. The sensor was constructed by electropolymerization of nickel-salen complex at platinum electrode in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate by cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior of the sensor was investigated in 0.5 mol L-1 KCl solution in the absence and presence of molecular oxygen. Thus, with the addition of oxygen to the solution, the increase of cathodic peak current (at -0.25 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)) of the modified electrode was observed. This result shows that the nickel-salen film on electrode surface promotes the reduction of oxygen. The reaction can be brought about electrochemically, where the nickel(II) complex is first reduced to a nickel(I) complex at the electrode surface. The nickel(I) complex then undergoes a catalytic oxidation by the molecular oxygen in solution back to the nickel(II) complex, which can then be electrochemically re-reduced to produce an enhancement of the cathodic current. The Tafel plot analyses have been used to elucidate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxygen reduction. A plot of the cathodic current vs. the dissolved oxygen concentration for chronoamperometry (fixed potential = -0.25 V vs. SCE) at the sensor was linear in the 3.95-9.20 mg L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 0.17 mg L-1 O-2. The proposed electrode is useful for the quality control and routine analysis of dissolved oxygen in commercial samples and environmental water. The results obtained for the levels of dissolved oxygen are in agreement with the results obtained with a commercial O-2 sensor. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
