The authors made 39 surveys (a total of 161 days) in the Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow of the Yangtze River, China, for observing 13 Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) captured from the main stream of the Yangtze River and 7 juveniles born in the oxbow from January 1997 to July 2000. The animals were usually divided into several "core" groups and moved around in shallow, muddy-bottom areas with the largest individual in the lead. Each core group was composed of 2-3 animals (either 2 adults, 1 adult and 1 juvenile, 2 adults and 1 juvenile, or 2 adults and 1 calf). Newly-released animals joined the other animals first, and then reorganized their own groups one or two days later. Average breath interval was 34.4 s (+/- s.d. 4.39) for individuals in the group. The animals mated from May through June and gave birth during the second and last ten days of April of the next year. The gestation period was estimated as 310 - 320 days. Calves over 5 months old began to eat small fish. The distance of calves swimming apart from their suspected mothers increased each month. These findings will help in the management of the reserve to protect this unique freshwater porpoise.

Dive-depth and swim-speed of a juvenile and an adult free-ranging, Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) were observed using velocity-time-depth recorders in an oxbow of the Yangtze River. In total, 8222 individual dives were recorded over 59 hours. Two dive types, deep-dive (greater than or equal to 2.7 m) and shallow-dive. were recognized. Horizontal travel distances of two finless pot-poises in a day were 94.4 km and 90.3 km, which were longer than those of oceanic relative species (harbor porpoises, Phocoena phocoena). Although the shallow water limited the maximum dive-depth, dive-duration, and bottom-time of finless porpoises were similar to the harbor porpoises. A sudden drop of swim-speed below 0.25 m s(-1) was frequently observed nearby the maximum dive-depth. This seemed to indicate "turning, around" behaviour, possibly during prey pursuit. The Mogi Guacu River is one of the largest rivers in state of São Paulo, belonging to Parana hydrographic system. A study about fish composition in the Mogi Guacu reservoir and four oxbow lakes downstream the reservoir is showed. A total of 2,367 individuals from six orders, 17 families, and 46 species were collected during August 2005 to July 2006, using gillnets, traps and hand nets. In the reservoir were found 31 species and in the oxbow lakes 24, in which Curimatidae and Characidae were the most abundant families, respectively.

The influence of water level variation (flood pulse) on the biomass and chemical composition of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea, was investigated in a tropical oxbow lake of the Rio Mogi-Guacu, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The flood pulse causes an increase in total nitrogen content from 0.67 to 1.35 mg/L and total phosphorus content from 10.5 to 101.0 mu g/L of the water. This fertilization, associated with other factors, determines a typical seasonal variation in the biomass and chemical composition of the macrophyte.

Vascular plants were investigated in oxbow lakes of Turvo River, Upper Paraná River basin, between Icém and Nova Granada municipalities, state of São Paulo, Brazil. In this region, six lagoons were sampled: Ganzella, Mustafá, Braço Morto, 45, Federal, and Parente. The survey showed a total of 54 species, 36 genera and 22 families. The species richest families were Poaceae, Cyperaceae, and Polygonaceae. Eichhornia crassipes (Pontederiaceae) was the single species encountered in all the six lakes. © 2010 Check List and Authors.
