The growing demand for steels with tighter compositional specifications led the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) to develop more efficient processes. To solve this problem this paper aims to identify the operational variables more impacting in the desulfurization process, specifically in torpedo car, as well as its causes and solutions. Then select and test, with laboratorial and industrial tests, desulfurizing agents based of CaC 2, CaO, CaCO3, and Mg to assess the cost per quantity of product desulfurized. The mixture with best results was not that one with highest content of CaC2. It is believed that this mixture showed better efficiency because of the increased agitation of the bath, produced by the releasing of gas from compound CaCO3 present in this mixture. Las terminales de contenedores son sistemas complejos en los que un elevado número de actores económicos interactúan para ofrecer servicios de alta calidad bajo una estricta planificación y objetivos económicos. Las conocidas como "terminales de nueva generación" están diseñadas para prestar servicio a los mega-buques, que requieren tasas de productividad que alcanzan los 300 movimientos/ hora. Estas terminales han de satisfacer altos estándares dado que la competitividad entre terminales es elevada. Asegurar la fiabilidad de las planificaciones del atraque es clave para atraer clientes, así como reducir al mínimo el tiempo que el buque permanece en el puerto. La planificación de las operaciones es más compleja que antaño, y las tolerancias para posibles errores, menores. En este contexto, las interrupciones operativas deben reducirse al mínimo. Las principales causas de dichas perturbaciones operacionales, y por lo tanto de incertidumbre, se identifican y caracterizan en esta investigación. Existen una serie de factores que al interactuar con la infraestructura y/o las operaciones desencadenan modos de fallo o parada operativa. Los primeros pueden derivar no solo en retrasos en el servicio sino que además puede tener efectos colaterales sobre la reputación de la terminal, o incluso gasto de tiempo de gestión, todo lo cual supone un impacto para la terminal. En el futuro inmediato, la monitorización de las variables operativas presenta gran potencial de cara a mejorar cualitativamente la gestión de las operaciones y los modelos de planificación de las terminales, cuyo nivel de automatización va en aumento. La combinación del criterio experto con instrumentos que proporcionen datos a corto y largo plazo es fundamental para el desarrollo de herramientas que ayuden en la toma de decisiones, ya que de este modo estarán adaptadas a las auténticas condiciones climáticas y operativas que existen en cada emplazamiento. Para el corto plazo se propone una metodología con la que obtener predicciones de parámetros operativos en terminales de contenedores. Adicionalmente se ha desarrollado un caso de estudio en el que se aplica el modelo propuesto para obtener predicciones de la productividad del buque. Este trabajo se ha basado íntegramente en datos proporcionados por una terminal semi-automatizada española. Por otro lado, se analiza cómo gestionar, evaluar y mitigar el efecto de las interrupciones operativas a largo plazo a través de la evaluación del riesgo, una forma interesante de evaluar el effecto que eventos inciertos pero probables pueden generar sobre la productividad a largo plazo de la terminal. Además se propone una definición de riesgo operativo junto con una discusión de los términos que representan con mayor fidelidad la naturaleza de las actividades y finalmente, se proporcionan directrices para gestionar los resultados obtenidos. Container terminals are complex systems where a large number of factors and stakeholders interact to provide high-quality services under rigid planning schedules and economic objectives. The socalled next generation terminals are conceived to serve the new mega-vessels, which are demanding productivity rates up to 300 moves/hour. These terminals need to satisfy high standards because competition among terminals is fierce. Ensuring reliability in berth scheduling is key to attract clients, as well as to reduce at a minimum the time that vessels stay the port. Because of the aforementioned, operations planning is becoming more complex, and the tolerances for errors are smaller. In this context, operational disturbances must be reduced at a minimum. The main sources of operational disruptions and thus, of uncertainty, are identified and characterized in this study. External drivers interact with the infrastructure and/or the activities resulting in failure or stoppage modes. The later may derive not only in operational delays but in collateral and reputation damage or loss of time (especially management times), all what implies an impact for the terminal. In the near future, the monitoring of operational variables has great potential to make a qualitative improvement in the operations management and planning models of terminals that use increasing levels of automation. The combination of expert criteria with instruments that provide short- and long-run data is fundamental for the development of tools to guide decision-making, since they will be adapted to the real climatic and operational conditions that exist on site. For the short-term a method to obtain operational parameter forecasts in container terminals. To this end, a case study is presented, in which forecasts of vessel performance are obtained. This research has been entirely been based on data gathered from a semi-automated container terminal from Spain. In the other hand it is analyzed how to manage, evaluate and mitigate disruptions in the long-term by means of the risk assessment, an interesting approach to evaluate the effect of uncertain but likely events on the long-term throughput of the terminal. In addition, a definition for operational risk evaluation in port facilities is proposed along with a discussion of the terms that better represent the nature of the activities involved and finally, guidelines to manage the results obtained are provided.

This study examined the physical and chemical properties of a novel, fully-recirculated prawn and polychaete production system that incorporated polychaete-assisted sand filters (PASF). The aims were to assess and demonstrate the potential of this system for industrialisation, and to provide optimisations for wastewater treatment by PASF. Two successive seasons were studied at commercially-relevant scales in a prototype system constructed at the Bribie Island Research Centre in Southeast Queensland. The project produced over 5.4 tonnes of high quality black tiger prawns at rates up to 9.9 tonnes per hectare, with feed conversion of up to 1.1. Additionally, the project produced about 930 kg of high value polychaete biomass at rates up to 1.5 kg per square metre of PASF, with the worms feeding predominantly on waste nutrients. Importantly, this closed production system demonstrated rapid growth of healthy prawns at commercially relevant production levels, using methods that appear feasible for application at large scale. Deeper (23 cm) PASF beds provided similar but more reliable wastewater treatment efficacies compared with shallower (13 cm) beds, but did not demonstrate significantly greater polychaete productivity than (easier to harvest) shallow beds. The nutrient dynamics associated with seasonal and tidal operations of the system were studied in detail, providing technical and practical insights into how PASF could be optimised for the mitigation of nutrient discharge. The study also highlighted some of the other important advantages of this integrated system, including low sludge production, no water discharge during the culture phase, high ecosystem health, good prospects for biosecurity controls, and the sustainable production of a fishery-limited resource (polychaetes) that may be essential for the expansion of prawn farming industries throughout the world. Regarding nutrient discharge from this prototype mariculture system, when PASF was operating correctly it proved feasible to have no water (or nutrient) discharge during the entire prawn growing season. However, the final drain harvest and emptying of ponds that is necessary at the end of the prawn farming season released 58.4 kg ha-1 of nitrogen and 6 kg ha-1 of phosphorus (in Season 2). Whilst this is well below (i.e., one-third to one-half of) the current load-based licencing conditions for many prawn farms in Australia, the levels of nitrogen and chlorophyll a in the ponds remained higher than the more-stringent maximum limits at the Bribie Island study site. Zero-net-nutrient discharge was not achieved, but waste nutrients were low where 5.91 kg of nitrogen and 0.61 kg of phosphorus was discharged per tonne of prawns produced. This was from a system that deployed PASF at 14.4% of total ponded farm area which treated an average of 5.8% of pond water daily and did not use settlement ponds or other natural or artificial water remediation systems. Four supplemental appendices complement this research by studying several additional aspects that are central to the industrialisation of PASF. The first details an economic model and decision tool which allows potential users to interactively assess construction and operational variables of PASF at different scales. The second provides the qualitative results of a prawn maturation trial conducted collaboratively with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to assess dietary inclusions of PASF-produced worms. The third provides the reproductive results from industry-based assessments of prawn broodstock produced using PASF. And the fourth appendix provides detailed elemental and nutritional analyses of bacterial biofilm produced by PASF and assesses its potential to improve the growth of prawns in recirculated culture systems.

A indústria de processos químicos tem sofrido consideráveis transformações devido ao acirramento da competitividade. Importantes progressos tecnológicos têm sido atingidos através de técnicas de modelagem, simulação e otimização visando o aumento da lucratividade e melhoria contínua nos processos industriais. Neste contexto, as plantas de metanol, um dos mais importantes produtos petroquímicos, podem ser destacadas. Atualmente, a principal matéria-prima para obtenção de metanol é o gás natural. A produção do metanol é caracterizada por três etapas: geração de gás de síntese, conversão do gás de síntese em metanol (unidade de síntese ou loop de síntese) e purificação do produto na especificação requerida. Os custos fixos e variáveis da unidade de síntese são fortemente dependentes das variáveis operacionais, como temperatura, pressão, razão de reciclo e composição da carga. Desta forma, foi desenvolvido um conjunto de modelos e algoritmos computacionais para representar matematicamente unidades de síntese de metanol. O modelo apresenta operações unitárias associadas aos seguintes equipamentos: divisores de correntes, misturadores de correntes, compressores, trocadores de calor, vasos de flash e reatores. Inicialmente, foi proposto um simulador estacionário, que serviu como base para um pseudo-estacionário, o qual contempla a desativação do catalisador por sinterização térmica. Os simuladores foram criados segundo uma arquitetura seqüencial modular e empregou-se o método de substituição sucessiva para a convergência dos reciclos. O estudo envolveu dois fluxogramas típicos, um constituído por reatores adiabáticos em série, enquanto o outro constituído por um reator tipo quench. Uma análise do efeito das principais variáveis operacionais foi realizada para o reator e para o loop de síntese. Estudou-se também o efeito da desativação do catalisador ao longo do tempo. Uma ferramenta de otimização operacional foi empregada para alcançar a máxima produção manipulando as injeções de carga fria na entrada dos leitos catalíticos. Formulou-se também um problema de maximização do lucro em função da otimização de paradas da unidade para troca do catalisador. Os resultados obtidos apontam que a ferramenta desenvolvida é promissora para a compreensão e otimização da unidade objeto deste estudo

Exploration of heavy oil reservoirs is increasing every year in worldwide, because the discovery of light oil reservoirs is becoming increasingly rare. This fact has stimulated the research with the purpose of becoming viable, technically and economically, the exploration of such oil reserves. In Brazil, in special in the Northeast region, there is a large amount of heavy oil reservoir, where the recovery by the so called secondary methods Water injection or gas injection is inefficient or even impracticable in some reservoirs with high viscosity oils (heavy oils). In this scenario, steam injection appears as an interesting alternative for recover of these kinds of oil reservoirs. Its main mechanism consists of oil viscosity reduction through steam injection, increasing reservoir temperature. This work presents a parametric simulation study of some operational and reservoir variables that had influence on oil recovery in thin reservoirs typically found in Brazilian Northeast Basins, that use the steam injection as improved oil recovery method. To carry out simulations, it was used the commercial software STARS (Steam, Thermal, and Advanced Processes Reservoir Simulator) from CMG (Computer Modeling Group) version 2007.11. Reservoirs variables studied were horizontal permeability, vertical and horizontal permeability ratio, water zone and pay zone thickness ratio, pay zone thickness and thermal conductivity of the rock. Whereas, operational parameters studied were distance between wells and steam injection rate. Results showed that reservoir variables that had more influence on oil recovery were horizontal permeability and water zone and pay zone thickness ratio. In relation to operational variables, results showed that short distances between wells and low steam injection rates improved oil recovery

The progressing cavity pumping (PCP) is one of the most applied oil lift methods nowadays in oil extraction due to its ability to pump heavy and high gas fraction flows. The computational modeling of PCPs appears as a tool to help experiments with the pump and therefore, obtain precisely the pump operational variables, contributing to pump s project and field operation otimization in the respectively situation. A computational model for multiphase flow inside a metallic stator PCP which consider the relative motion between rotor and stator was developed in the present work. In such model, the gas-liquid bubbly flow pattern was considered, which is a very common situation in practice. The Eulerian-Eulerian approach, considering the homogeneous and inhomogeneous models, was employed and gas was treated taking into account an ideal gas state. The effects of the different gas volume fractions in pump volumetric eficiency, pressure distribution, power, slippage flow rate and volumetric flow rate were analyzed. The results shown that the developed model is capable of reproducing pump dynamic behaviour under the multiphase flow conditions early performed in experimental works

This work deals with the kinetics assay of Cajá (Spondias mombin L.) bagasse drying by an experimental design using a tray dryer. In order to add-value to this product a kinetic study has been carried out. A central composite experimental design has been carried out to evaluate the influence of the operational variables: input air temperature (55; 65 e 75ºC); the drying air velocity (3.2; 4.6 e 6.0 m/s) and the fixed bed thickness (0.8; 1.2 e 1.6 cm) and as response variable the the moisture content (dry basis). The results showed that the diffusional Fick model fitted quite well the experimental data. The best condition found has been input air temperature of 75ºC, drying air velocity of 6.0 m/s as well as fixed bed thickness of 0.8 cm. The experimental design assay showed that the main effects as well as the second ones were significant at 95% confindance level. The best operational condition according to statistical planning was 75 oC input air temperature, 6.0 m.s-1 drying air velocity and 0.8 cm fixed bed thickness. In this case, the equilibrium moisture content (1.3% dry basis) occured at 220 minutes

Waste stabilization ponds are the main technology in use for domestic sewage treatment in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), northeast Brazil. The are around 80 systems, constructed mainly by municipal city halls, being series comprised by a primary facultative pond followed by two maturation ponds the most used configuration. Due to problems related with the production and destination of sludge and generation of bad odors, the designers have avoided the use of anaerobic lagoons. The majority of systems are rarely monitored to verify their efficiencies and to get new project parameters for future designing. This work has as purpose to make a diagnosis of efficiency of three series of waste stabilization pond series (WSPS) of Jardim Lola 1, Jardim Lola 2 and Beira Rio, located in the North Zone of the city of the Natal/RN, treating domestic raw sewage, on the removal of organic matter and thermotolerant coliform, comparing the operational conditions of the systems this inside of the bands foreseen in the project, through parameters BOD5, QOD, thermotolerant coliforms, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, ammoniac nitrogen, total and suspended solids. The work was carried through in the WSPS, all constituted by a primary facultative pond followed by two maturation ponds. Socioeconomic characteristics of population are predominantly low and all the plants are very near of the contributing basins. The series were monitored from of May the November of 2002, totalizing 20 collections of grab samples of raw sewage and ponds effluents between 8:00 and 9:50 h. The main aspect to be detached by the results was the great concentration of organic matter (BOD and COD) and microorganisms the raw sewage which were around two times more concentrated than those values foreseen one in project. Considering all series the highest removals of organic matter were observed in system Beira Rio (84 and 78% of BOD and COD, respectively), which presented high hydraulic detention time (TDH = 89 days). On the other hand, Jardim Lola 1 and Jardim Lola 2 presented a much lower values of HDT (36 days and 18 days respectively) and their removals of BOD and COD were the same (76% and 60%, respectively). The Beira Rio WSPS, was the most efficient verified in relation to solids and ammonia, proving the great influence of the operational variables such as HDT and applied surface organic loadings on the performance of pond series. Although the treatment plants have reached efficiencies of thermotolerant coliforms around 99,999%, the concentrations in the final effluent can be considered very high for launching in aquatic bodies, particularly those produced by Jardim Lola 1 and Jardim Lola 2 series

One of the major problems facing Blast Furnaces is the occurrence of cracks in taphole mud, as the underlying causes are not easily identifiable. The absence of this knowledge makes it difficult the use of conventional techniques for predictability and mitigation. This paper will address the application of Probabilistic Neural Network using the Matlab software as a means to detect and control such cracks. The most relevant BF operational variables were picked through the statistic tool "Principal Component Analysis - PCA." Based upon the selection of these variables a probabilistic neural network was built. A set of BF operational data, consisting of 30 controlling variables, was divided into 2 groups, one of which for network training, and the other one to validate the neural network. The neural network got 98% of the cases right. The results show the effectiveness of this tool for crack prediction in relation to clay intrinsic properties and as a result of the fluctuation in operational variables.

One of the drillbit performance evaluators, the Rate Of Penetration (ROP), has been used as a drilling control parameter. However, relationships between operational variables affecting the ROP are complex and not easily modeled. This work presents a neuro-genetic adaptive controller to treat this problem. Motivated by rising drilling operation costs, the oil industry has shown a trend towards real-time measurements and control. In this scenario, drilling control becomes a challenging problem for the industry, especially due to the difficulty associated to parameters modeling. One of the drill-bit performance evaluators, the Rate of Penetration (ROP), has been used in the literature as a drilling control parameter. However, the relationships between the operational variables affecting the ROP are complex and not easily modeled. This work presents a neuro-genetic adaptive controller to treat this problem. It is based on the Auto-Regressive with Extra Input Signals model, or ARX model, to accomplish the system identification and on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to provide a robust control for the ROP. Results of simulations run over a real offshore oil field data, consisted of seven wells drilled with equal diameter bits, are provided. © 2006 IEEE.

Neste trabalho investigaram-se de forma sistemática as variáveis operacionais de processo envolvidas nas operações de separação aplicadas no pré-tratamento do óleo de palma bruto (Elaeis guineensis, jacq) e na purificação do biodiesel produzido via transesterificação etanólica utilizando NaOH como catalisador, em escala de laboratório. Na etapa de pré-tratamento foram investigados os processos de Filtração e Decantação, sendo a filtração do produto da neutralização realizada a 40ºC, 50ºC e 60ºC, enquanto que na Decantação, avaliaram-se as temperaturas de 40ºC e 60ºC em 120 minutos. Em seguida, investigou-se a influência do tempo de decantação de 60, 90 e 120 minutos no processo de lavagem do óleo neutralizado a 40ºC e 60ºC, seguida de Desidratação sob vácuo a 80ºC, tendo sido investigado nesta etapa a influência da pressão. Após a reação de transesterificação, avaliou-se o processo de Evaporação do etanol em excesso, onde em um primeiro momento investigou-se as temperaturas de 70 e 80ºC, mantendo-se o tempo de evaporação constante em 20 minutos, no intervalo de 613,30 a 80,00 mbar, e em um segundo momento analisou-se as pressões de operação de 480,00 e 346,66 mbar. Em seguida, investigou-se a influência do tempo no processo de decantação da fase rica em glicerol a 70ºC, para tempos de 60, 120 e 180 minutos. Sendo realizada a lavagem da fase rica em ésteres a 70ºC, para os tempos de 60, 90 e 120 minutos de decantação da água residual. Avaliou-se ainda a eficiência do processo de centrifugação da mistura biodiesel e glicerol a 60 e 70ºC a 2000 rpm, para um tempo de 15 minutos. Em seguida, procedeu-se a lavagem da fase rica em ésteres com água a 60 e 70ºC, sendo a separação realizada via centrifugação a 60 e 70ºC. As fases ricas em ésteres, obtidas via decantação e centrifugação, foram submetidas à Desidratação sob vácuo, e caracterizadas em conformidade com as especificações da ANP. De acordo com os resultados experimentais, com base na qualidade do óleo neutro e rendimento do processo, observou-se que a Filtração a 50ºC gerou os melhores resultados para o pré-tratamento do óleo. Em relação à Evaporação do etanol, o melhor percentual de recuperação foi obtido a 80ºC e 346,6 mbar. Com relação à separação da fase ricas em ésteres e glicerol, o processo de Centrifugação a 60ºC gerou um biodiesel de melhor qualidade e maior rendimento. Observou-se ainda, a necessidade de uma segunda etapa de centrifugação de forma a minimizar a perdas de biodiesel na fase rica em glicerol.

This study explored the relationship of attitudes, needs, and health services utilization patterns of elderly veterans who were identified and categorized by their expectation for and receipt of sick-role legitimation. Three prescription types (new, change, renewal) were defined as the operational variables. A population of 676 ambulatory, chronically ill (average age 60 years) veterans were sent a questionnaire (74% response rate). In addition, retrospective medical and prescription record review was performed for a 45% sample of respondents. The results were analyzed using discriminant function and regression analysis. Fewer than 20% of the veterans responding expected to receive more prescriptions than were presently prescribed, whereas over 80% expected refill authorizations. Distinct attitudinal, need, and utilization patterns were identified. ^

La mejora en la eficiencia energética y la reducción de la tasa de fallos en los contactos lubricados son aspectos que resultan de gran interés en numerosos sectores de la industria, y plantean en estos momentos nuevas dificultades operativas y retos para un futuro próximo. Los avances tecnológicos han incrementado las exigencias técnicas que se requieren a los aceites para cumplir su función al extender sus variables operativas a un mayor espectro de aplicaciones, tanto de condiciones de funcionamiento como a la gran variedad de nuevos materiales constitutivos de los engranajes en los que se tiene que utilizar. Por ello, actualmente se está incentivado el desarrollo de nuevos procedimientos que permitan comprender el comportamiento de este tipo de contactos lubricados, con el fin de lograr mejoras técnicas en su diseño y la correcta selección del aceite. En esta Tesis Doctoral se presenta una metodología de cálculo numérico que permite simular el comportamiento de contactos elastohidrodinámicos (EHD) puntuales, como puede ser el caso de un rodamiento. La resolución de este problema presenta diversas complejidades matemáticas y exige el desarrollo de un elaborado procedimiento de cálculo basado en técnicas multinivel. Para hacer del procedimiento una herramienta válida en un gran número de condiciones de funcionamiento y tipos de lubricantes, se ha tenido en cuenta en el cálculo la posible aparición de comportamientos no-Newtonianos del lubricante y fenómenos de generación y disipación de calor, provocados por el movimiento relativo del fluido y las superficies en contacto. Para la validación del procedimiento, se han contrastado los resultados numéricos obtenidos con nuestro método, con los resultados numéricos y experimentales publicados por otros autores y con valores experimentales propios medidos en un equipo de ensayo de contacto puntual tipo MTM. El desarrollo de este programa ha dotado a la División de Ingeniería de Máquinas de una herramienta que ha permitido, y sobre todo va permitir, evaluar la importancia de cada uno de los parámetros reológicos en los diferentes problemas que va a tener que abordar, evaluación que hasta el momento se realizaba con métodos aproximados que describen la fenomenología con mucha menos precisión. A la hora de emplear nuestro procedimiento numérico para simular situaciones reales, nos hemos encontrado con el obstáculo de que es muy complicado encontrar, en la bibliografía y bases de datos, los parámetros que caracterizan el comportamiento reológico del lubricante en las condiciones de presión, temperatura y grado de cizallamiento habituales en las que se trabaja en este tipo de contactos, y las pocas medidas que existen para estas condiciones de funcionamiento son poco fiables. Por ello como complemento al objetivo principal de esta Tesis hemos desarrollado una metodología para caracterizar los lubricantes en estas condiciones extremas. Dicha metodología está basada en la buena descripción que hace nuestro programa del coeficiente de fricción, lo que nos ha permitido obtener los parámetros reológicos del III lubricante a partir de las medidas experimentales del coeficiente de fricción generado en un equipo MTM lubricado con el lubricante que se desea caracterizar. Madrid, Octubre de 2012 IV Improving energy efficiency and reducing the failure rate in lubricated contacts are issues that are of great interest in many sectors of industry, and right now posed operational difficulties and new challenges for the near future. Technological advances have increased the technical demands required to oils to fulfil its role by extending its operational variables to a wider range of applications, both operating conditions and to the wide variety of new materials which constitute the gear in which must be used. For this reason, has being encouraged currently to develop new procedures to understand the behaviour of this type of lubricated contacts, in order to achieve improvements in design techniques and the correct oil selection. In this Thesis we present a numerical methodology to simulate the puntual elastohydrodynamic contact behaviour (EHD), such as a roller bearing. The resolution of this problem presents various mathematical complexities and requires the development of an elaborate calculation procedure based on multilevel techniques. To make the procedure a valid tool in a wide range of operating conditions and types of lubricants, has been taken into account in calculating the possible occurrence of non-Newtonian behaviour of the lubricant and phenomena of generation and dissipation of heat, caused by the fluid relative motion and contacting surfaces. For the validation of the method, we have compared the numerical results obtained with our method with numerical and experimental results published by other authors also with own experimental values measured on point-contact test equipment MTM. The development of this program has provided the Machines Engineering Division of a tool that has allowed, and especially will allow to evaluate the importance of each of the rheological parameters on the various problems that will have to be addressed, evaluation performed hitherto described methods that phenomenology approximated with much less accuracy. When using our numerical procedure to simulate real situations we have encountered the obstacle that is very difficult to find, in the literature and database, parameters characterizing the rheological behaviour of the lubricant in the usual conditions of pressure, temperature and shear rate in which you work in this type of contact, and the few measures that exist for these operating conditions are unreliable. Thus in addition to the main objective of this thesis, we have developed a methodology to characterize the lubricants in these extreme conditions. This methodology is based on the good description, which makes our program, of the coefficient of friction, that allowed us to obtain the lubricant rheological parameters from experimental measurements of the friction coefficient generated on lubricated MTM equipment with the lubricant to be characterized.

A computer model was developed to simulate the cake formation and growth in cake filtration at an individual particle level. The model was shown to be able to generate structural information and quantify the cake thickness, average cake solidosity, filtrate volume, filtrate flowrate for constant pressure filtration or pressure drop across the filter unit for constant rate filtration as a function of filtration time. The effects of particle size distribution and key operational variables such as initial filtration flowrate, maximum pressure drop and initial solidosity were examined based on the simulated results. They are qualitatively comparable to those observed in physical experiments. The need for further development in simulation was also discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
